Sassafras Tavern

Restaurant

👍 Two stars deducted for the chef/manager in his delivery of his suggestion on how I should have my steak cooked. I wanted well done. Changed to a medium-well just to avoid continuing the conversation as it made me feel like I'm being judged on how I prefer my steak. One star added back for him genuin... Two stars deducted for the chef/manager in his delivery of his suggestion on how I should have my steak cooked. I wanted well done. Changed to a medium-well just to avoid continuing the conversation as it made me feel like I'm being judged on how I prefer my steak. One star added back for him genuinely caring about the food and provide otherwise great service.

WOW! Great atmosphere, a string of amazings the room SO perfect for a quiet intimate dinner or a fun night with friends or family. The fire places and decor very cosy and unique. Super comfy chairs. Amazing staff and service start to finish, speedy awesome foods our entrees were with us 15 minutes after we got there, and they were delicious and we'll portioned. Nothing bad to say, had good vegitarian options also so wife very happy. Love it

On our recent trip down south, hubby and I headed here for dinner with an old school friend of mine. The tavern is a ‘traditional English-style pub’, snug and cosy with appealing décor in an oldy worldy way. Service was prompt, efficient and very friendly. We found the disabled access door locked, so had to walk all around the tavern, but they happily unlocked it for us on the way out. I chose the beer battered flake and chips, which I really enjoyed. The fish was moist and tender, and the batter light and airy. It came with a small salad of the usual suspects, a wedge of lemon and some tartare sauce. I drank prosecco with my meal. Hubby went for the Sassy burger: beef, bacon, cheese, onion jam, lettuce and tomato on a not-too sweet brioche bun. He said he liked the onion jam, which added flavour and sauciness to the burger. The beef pattie was tender and well-flavoured. Ms. M ate the Caesar salad sans bacon. The salad had a generous amount of shaved parmesan on top of the crisp leaves. Hubby had a Coke, while Ms. M had water. She and I then went for the strawberry tiramisu, which sadly was not as splendid as I’d hoped it to be. It was just a bit too claggy for me. We both said we should have ordered just one serve as it was very filling. Apart from that, we all had a lovely night, and wandered off into the darkening twilight, out the disabled access door.

The family celebrated a special birthday here. With great friendly attentive service. I ate the 300gm rump steak which was amazing! Cooked to perfection! Everyone enjoyed their meals, risotto, parmies, 200gm eye fillet. Wine list is compact but well chosen. Tables are well spaced. I loved the refurbished decor. I will definately return! 😊

Absolutely fabulous location up in the Dandenong Ranges. Great for couples to enjoy a meal and drink among the trees. Plenty of comfy seating with lots of delicious meals and drinks on the menu. There's indoor and outdoor seating and heating for those cold days. If you want some good old fashion fun, they have a bunch of card and board games available for you to enjoy. It's a great atmosphere and the staff are very friendly and happy to take your order.

For the first time at any restaurant I’ve been to I had fresh gnocchi and my partners prawns and linguine was yum and our dips and pita bread were beautiful ! And my Long island ice tea cocktail was made right and I can tell you not many pull off a good tasting long island ice tea ! The staff were so lovely! Give this tavern a go if you haven’t already.

I thought long and hard about this review. I love to support local businesses and would’ve loved to give more stars. I’m just hoping that management will make a few changes and then my next visit could be 5 stars. Beautiful, cozy place with really nice ambience. Went for dinner and they were not overly busy. I thought the pricing was a tad excessive, especially for the salads. One meal came out with meat on it when there shouldn’t have been. I ordered the roast veg salad at $27 and I have to say it was a big serve but, there was lucky to be a handful of roast veggies in it and around 8 small thinly sliced chicken bits. The rest of the bowl was completely filled with rocket. I didn’t think that was good enough for $27. Just over half way through found a very long hair entwined in the rocket.. took a good 10 min before I could get the attention of a waitress. She was very apologetic and yes I know these things happen and yes it was removed from the bill. All the other meals were quite good according to my friends. Order a coffee which was very good. But after that not one wait staff came back to the table to see if we wanted anything else and we were sitting there for a good hour after our meals. What really turned me off were the toilets!! In the female toilets you have toilet rolls on metal holders designed for paper towel just sitting on the floor next to the toilets. One toilet did not have a wall toilet roll holder so the rolls were on the floor.. the sanitary bins next to the toilets were just normal flip up lid bins with a plastic bag inside!! I’m guessing if you’d opened that bin you’d see previous occupants sanitary waste 🤢 I sincerely hope they take note of this and do something about the toilets... I will go back and give them another chance.

This place is amazing!!!! Went there today when it was raining outside, beautiful fireplace inside. The people who worked there were so lovely and accommodating. I ordered the truffle risotto and my partner ordered the chicken parmigiana, I have honestly not tasted such fresh produce like this in a very long time, my new favorite restaurant!!! Tick tick tick!

Have been here 3 times since the Tavern re-opened about a month ago and taken family and friends, as it is so good. The meals are first class, as are the staff and the atmosphere. Can not fault the salmon, rib eye, pasta and the cheesecake & apple crumble tart. Not to mention the chorizo and meatball starters. Intend eating our way through the whole menu! The food and staff are a credit to the owner and we'll be back.

5 stars for awesome customer service and delicious food! Lovely, inviting atmosphere with cosy dining room and fireplaces. Gracious and helpful staff who clearly love what they do. Kids meals were a good size, and good value for money. Our mains were very tasty also. Perfect for a Sunday lunch!

Great cosy atmosphere, complete with a fireplace and vintage artworks. The chicken Parma was great, although it is more pricier than at many other restaurants. The chicken risotto was good, although I felt the flavours were a bit subdued. But overall, it's one of the best places to eat in Sassafras.

Staff were so friendly, professional, attentive and extremely polite. The food was amazing, clean and fresh. Menu looks fantastic and we will be visiting again to try a few more of these delicious looking dishes. The decor is rustic and the atmosphere is relaxing. Wish I could give more stars!!!!

A lovely venue with amazing food, great staff and excellent service ~ the seating area was tidy and well kept ~ the giant salt lamp and the selanite lamp was a great touch to the atmosphere of Sassafras!
