The food exceeded both our expectations! Definitely on the pricier end but worth the experience. The ambiance inside was perfect for a date—the lighting, setup, etc! We ordered the tuna tartare, autumn pizza, and roasted bone marrow all of which were SO good. We especially liked the autumn pizza which had a lot of flavorful, unique toppings which went well with the super thin crust. The tuna tartare was also extremely fresh and the dressing was delicious! Super impressed overall. The service was especially slow despite there not being many customers, but our server was very nice.

We were surprised we were able to get a table for Sunday brunch as this is a very popular spot. Latte and cappuccino were very good. Entrée options were all really nice, hard to choose just one or two. Portions were acceptable, you won't leave feeling overly stuffed. Breakfast Sandwich was nice as was the Avocado Toast. The Prosciutto and fig pizza had an excellent combination of flavors, though the toppings were a bit large so it was hard to get an even combination of all the flavors in any one bite. Overall a solid brunch spot.

Our second time here was a freezing cold evening. The hostess asked where we would like to sit. The front had a nice view of the street, but I was concerned about the cold coming in. She went out and closed the outer door so when the interior door opened, we were not cold. I ordered a special: scallops surrounded with French fries. The wait staff made this unusual recommendation. The shrimp dish was excellent.

I went here for a work dinner recently, after having not been here for many years. It was mid week and the restaurant was quiet…no more than 30% full. First impressions were that the interior is dated (wobbly tables, sticky floors, subpar bathroom, etc) and needs some TLC. Once seated, our server didn’t speak much English, which made it difficult to get recommendations…but nonetheless they didn’t seem all that motivated to be there in the first place. We ordered cocktails, wine, apps and entrees. The calamari and octopus apps were pretty sad, overcooked and small portions. Of the entrees we ordered, the Cesar salad and pizza were the best of the bunch. Our server recommended a specialty dish called the “Mee Krob” (one of their 3 classic dishes on the menu) and it was a total let down. It was basically a huge portion of crispy puffy rice noodles with a small portion of protein and veggies…and a touch of Asian and Sriracha sauce. The noodles that touched the sauce were soggy and the rest were plain as rice cakes. 2 of us ordered this and were let down and barely ate any of it. My other colleague ordered the grilled salmon and that was fine, but nothing special. I had fond memories of eating here many years ago - but the experience, service, food and atmosphere missed the mark. I don’t recommend coming here for anything other than drinks and perhaps some basic bar food…but for the price, there are better options.

I had an alright experience for brunch today. I was seated at the bar, far right seat next to a bunch of trays used to take drinks to tables. Instead of them being moved automatically, I patiently waited for them to be taken away so I had more room. Eventually, I think it was a manager who moved them out of my way without any acknowledgment of me. The bartender, a male, made me feel seen. He was on top of everything with me. I had a mimosa and I wanted another, so he surprised me (with request) with a different juice. My meal was alright. The fries were overseasoned with salt and pepper. The croque monsieur was pretty good. Nothing too special to write home about.

Sonsie has a nice date-night calm mature atmosphere— I would take my grandparents here to show them what American restaurants are like. We ordered a sangria pitcher but it tasted like water with a little bit of sugar in it—not strong at all for $45 to share among four people. However the food was good and there are a variety of options for everyone — staff was friendly enough, and overall it was a decent experience.

Do not recommend. We showed up for our 11:30 Brunch Reservation, only to wait 45 minutes to finally be seated. Once we were seated, the waiter didn't introduce himself or greet us in anyway (also took him about 10 min to even make an appearance at the table). It was windy outside, so the umbrella fell on my friend and almost hit her in the head. Once that happened, I had to ask them to find a weight to place on the umbrella stand so it didn't move. The manager didn't apologize once. Once we finally got the food, it was pretty good but nothing to write home about and certainly not worth the time or effort it took to get a table. Our waiter didn't check in on us once and messed up my order. Finally, when we got the check I had to wave the manager over because at that point our waiter had disappeared. She waived the cost of our oysters ($12 total), which was a nice gesture, but again did not apologize or seem to want to take care of us - just wanted us to get out of her hair. I'm hoping this was just a one-off experience, but it seemed like the personnel were poorly trained/managed. I will not be returning to Sonsie.

Amazing breakfast pizza and good drinks. Sat in the back. Had great service this place is definitely worth checking out. We got there before 10 by the time we left the whole front was full.

Sonsie was recommended to me by a coworker, and I was able to get a table to meet some clients for dinner. We had an incredible meal & drinks, recommendations by our server Ava were spot on! The espresso martini is to die for! I hardly ever write reviews, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to say what great food & amazing service we had! Thank you Ava for taking great care of us and making me look like a rock star in front of my clients! Will definitely be back soon!

The place was busy in the evening. The tables for 2 were a little bit small but the staff were checking on us frequently. The French doors were open and added a nice touch to our dining experience. We ordered CRISPY CHICKEN ROULADE and PAN SEARED SEA SCALLOPS and both dishes were delicious.

very nice restaurant in a perfect a d beautiful location. I like the feel of the indoor and outdoor feel to their dining. came here once before just for drinks and it was nice so decided to try it again. our server was really nice but you could tell she was very overwhelmed. she still did her best to be attentive as needed. however the food left much.. much to be desired. eveything was rather bland, bread and wonton chips were very stale. and we both got burgers and it was just not worth it at all. the bread was so much bigger than the burger itself, both were well done. but not impressed. the sangria were very good. might just stick to drinks here going forward.

I went there multiple times for brunch. Most plates are very delicious and good in portion. But I did not like their avocado toast style, too much tomato sauce. Anyway, I d bring anyone visiting Boston to this place for brunch, very safe decision!

Went for brunch. Kid friendly. Menu was well executed. Food tasted great. Server was extremely friendly. French toast with fruity pebbles was next level. Nut allergy friendly. Food arrived at glacial pace, kitchen must have been understaffed or backed up. Clean bathrooms.

Great restaurant on upper Newbury Street. Try to go on a warm evening-the entire front of the restaurant opens to the street! The calamari was delicious. I really liked the Pork Milanese with greens. And they have Maine Beer Company’s Lunch-what beer drinking person doesn’t love that!

  • 5/5 Jane M. 6 months ago on Google • 55 reviews
We had cocktails and dinner last night. The weather was nice and all the windows were open. Such a nice vibe. We started with fried calamari to share. For dinner I had tuna nicoise and my husband had pork Milanese. We also got some crispy fries which were great. All dishes were exactly what we had hoped for. My husband had a Maine beer Lunch which is a favorite of his. Our server was very attentive. Can’t wait to go back!!

Beside the 3 tables apparently having been reserved (though no one showed up for any of them) and handling our request with bit of an attitude, the rest of our experience was great!

This place was cute. The food wasn’t so great in my opinion but it was good enough as a first meal. The ribs weren’t as juicy as I’d like and the sandwich seemed like something I could have made myself but the service was great.

  • 2/5 G D. 2 years ago on Google
The place is cute for sitting outside. However non of what we ordered for brunch was decent: not the Benedict (English muffins not fresh, not toasted, avocado not fresh, cold potatoes), not the French toast and not even the simple scrambled eggs which were not made well and also came with cold potatoes. Most of the brunch was left on the table.

One of my favourite restaurants in Boston, pre-covid. They used to have calamari on the menu, but it’s been removed now. Much to my disappointment :/ Their pizza has always been delicious to me and their mock-tails. However with COVID, my mother and I were placed very close to another table which was uncomfortable (we chose outdoor seating). Tables are supposed to be 6ft apart, but we weren’t.

Went here for a late brunch with a group of 5 to celebrate a birthday. The food was pretty good and had the classics (Benedicts, Breakfast sandwich, avocado toast etc.). However, the service was pretty horrendous. To start, our Waiter did not introduce themselves and simply stared at us until we started ordering, which was just kind of off-putting. Additionally, one of our party’s orders wasn’t sent to the kitchen, which is ok: mistakes happen. Once we realized this, we politely told the person who delivered the food and he had no apology or explanation and tasked us with flagging down our waiter. It took 15 minutes for our waiter to return and we then waited another 30 minutes for the missing breakfast sandwich. Once again, we received no apology or explanation from our waiter. Additionally, our server had pretty poor service etiquette: taking plates with food without asking, spilling water all over when pouring water, etc. Disappointing overall and a real shame since the food is pretty good. I have never left a negative review for a restaurant and am a firm believer in supporting servers and treating them with the utmost respect. However, this experience was just generally really poor and made us all feel out of place. Wish you the best and that these issues can be addressed :)

Went there for Brunch with a family of four and had an incredible breakfast sandwich (check the menu). It's a busy place, but the hostess got us seated quickly. Definitely worth the short wait. Very well run business.

Thoroughly enjoyed our first time at Sonsie. A very busy Saturday brunch and the staff handled us perfectly. From the hostess to the server to the food and the manager checking in on everything, this was a 5-Star experience! We will definitely return next time we travel to Boston.

The worst food I ever had. Half the stuff we ordered they did not have or were out of. If you don't have it, Take it off the menu. I would not go back to this restaurant again.

Great space, good food, convenient location on Newbury. The little pizzas are fantastic, and they serve them well after most places have closed their kitchens. The drinks aren't cheap, but are appropriately strong and well-crafted. Our waitress was attentive but did mix up our orders several times, and later on it was difficult to get the attention of bar staff who were busy chatting with other customers and each other. Otherwise it was a very pleasant visit!

Very nice quiet evening for a Monday night. Grilled octopus was delicious. Espresso Martini was...WOW! I don't typically drink but THIS I would order...again and again and again. Wow. The Sonsie Burger was fantastic. Super full of flavor and freshness. Although I have had fresher tasting beef. Still good. Always a good place to relax and chat

After my daughter’s graduation, I wanted to have a nice dinner with my family Sonsie was absolutely AWFUL. My husband found a bug in his drink and my burger was undercooked. The owner reacted terribly to criticism and verbally attracted my father.

I’ve been coming to this restaurant since it’s inception years ago. A new chef who was formerly at Trade is in the kitchen and he has maintained if not exceeded his predecessors. The octopus, Caesar salad, duck and chocolate bread pudding are not to be missed!

I had whiskey cocktails and their brick oven pizza. The bartenders know how to make a proper Old Fashioned and their flatbread pizza offerings are a delight. Classy, clean and amply appointed... You won't be embarrassed meeting a client for lunch here either.

We had such a positive experience. Stopped in on a whim and was glad we did. Warm and classy atmosphere, without being uptight. Our server Dawn was fantastic. She was extremely attentive and happily accommodated my special food requests. Our drinks were refilled without having to ask. Good food, good atmosphere, and great service: what more could you ask for? We'll definitely be back

Let’s get one thing straight: the food here is amazing. The bread pudding is one of the best I’ve ever had and I have had anything here that I don’t like. Why 3 stars then? The service. I’ve been here twice- once on a busy weekend night and the second time a few days ago on a Monday night. I’m a server so I completely get being busy and slower service. However, both times I’ve been it has been almost unbearable. What should have been an hour dining experience turned into 2+ hours. My water was always empty, there were always dirty plates crowding the table, and it took forever to put in our order. Both times, the food came out relatively quickly but drinks took an extremely long time to come out. If you’re okay with slow service, I highly recommend Sonsie because, again, the food is great. I’d recommend just doing takeout though.

A fantastic local bistro with a crowd of a real social variety. The smaller menu was totally sufficient at midday, with pot stickers and a delicious burger. The bar was rowdy for daylight, but it was Sunday. And really only one boisterous Bostonian. Note: Costanza would NOT like these tiny bathrooms.

Such a cute restaurant!! We had reservations here and it was in December so it was all decorated for Christmas. It felt like a cozy but not too casual restaurant. The food was great here. I had the eggplant parmigiana pizza and the flavors went together so well. For dessert I had the goat cheese brownie ice cream- it sounds funny but it's so good. The hummus also definitely had to be ordered. Definitely check it out!

As an Asian, I might have been discriminated against by the server. I took my sister who visited me from home country, and I wanted to have seats on the patio. I went there at 8:30 pm and there were plenty of empty seats on the patio. However, the server told me that it is mandatory for me to order food value at least 8$ except drinks. I ordered two glasses of wine and a fried colliflower, but I don't feel very good because one person sitting on my right table and two other people sitting on my left table obviously seemed that they ordered a glass of cocktail without any food.

If you’re looking for a solid spot to enjoy a meal on Newbury Street, you have to check out Sonsie! Sonsie has an incredible menu full of international cuisine. They utilize a brick-oven to bake their pizzas and focaccia. The menu is incredibly unique and there is something for everyone! The menu offers a wide variety from a variety of cuisines. They offer a great selection of small plates on the dinner menu. Fresh oysters and tuna tartare is on the menu for the seafood aficionados! They also boast about their house-made Gyoza/Dumplings. They have three varieties: pork & ginger, lemongrass chicken, & shiitake mushroom with kale. The gyoza is made fresh in-house! The sesame soy sauce is highly recommended for dipping! In addition to that, they also offer hand-stretched, brick-oven pizzas and focaccia. If you’re in the mood for a larger meal, they have a solid selection of pastas, seafood, roasted chicken, burgers, and more! If you’re a dessert person, the menu is a bit limited in that regard. They also have a small selection of soup, salads, and sides. We decided to stop in to enjoy dinner on their outdoor patio. Unfortunately, they had moved service to inside with the French-doors open. It was like sitting outside, the breeze was phenomenal. The music was bumping and the bar/restaurant got more busy the later it got! They do offer a late-night menu that consists of their brick-oven pizzas & their House-Made Gyoza Dumplings. They’re one of the few spots in the area that serves this late. We started with the Crispy Calamari to share. The portion was generous. The Crispy Calamari was cooked perfectly, not overdone or chewy like many places. It was served with giardinaire and a cucumber-yogurt sauce. The cucumber-yogurt sauce truly elevated the dish. I actually requested our server complement the chef, as it was a new twist on the menu item. We LOVED it. We also ordered a “Margherita” pizza to share. The pizzas here are hand-stretched and baked in a brick oven. I have never seen a crust so thin, it is phenomenal! They utilize house-made, fresh mozzarella on the pizza. The sauce is fresh san marzano tomato. They finish it off with fresh basil. A typical pizza here is six-slices. Their beverage/mixology program is also spectacular. We both ordered “The Dana”. Citron vodka, lemoncello crema in a glass with a sugar rim. The drink hit all the right notes, incredibly smooth and delicious. Mixed perfectly! The service was top-notch. The waitress was excellent, always ensuring we were well taken care of and that our water glasses stayed full. She was quick and efficient. She even checked to ensure nobody had any food allergies. Due to the amazing service AND food, we will certainly make this one of our regular spots! The service is spectacular! The service and quality of the food TRULY earned 5-Stars. If you’re looking for a late night bite & a solid beverage, they’re open until 1AM on Saturdays!

We had such a wonderful dinner at Sonsie! The Mee Krob Thai Noodles were incredible - I will be dreaming of them for months! Menu has great variety (with plenty of gf options), and everything we tried/shared was fantastic. Great cocktails and wine options. Atmosphere is sophisticated but laidback, vibe is lively but not rowdy. Service was impeccable. This will a a must-do for us when we are in Boston!

The taste of the food was good, it wasn’t the best. The food was very light, with a wide variety of pleasant flavors. In my opinion, the best plate was the ‘Pumpkin French Toasts’. The food was delivered quickly, however one of the plates was incorrect and the beverage order did not come complete. The service was not the best because the waitress did not visit the table regularly and the bathrooms were dirty. By the way, the espresso coffee machine was broke.

Incredibly bad service. The food was meh. I called 5 days ahead to request outdoor seating for Sun brunch. The lady who answered said “ok, I’ll make a note of it.” When we arrived they said...”oh no, outdoor seating is first come, you shouldn’t have been told that.” We only saw our waiter 2x, once to take our order and then to get our check. No coffee refill or anything. As for the food: the Avocado toast was tiny. I was starving after I ate it. Coffee was luke warm. The granola was dry - not good and there was little yogurt. The cocktail sauce for the oysters was terrible. I’m so disappointed with this place.

  • 3/5 Arianna P. 4 years ago on Google
The atmosphere is nice, but the food is overpriced for what you get. Even on Newbury street. We ordered a few appetizers/ plates to share and one in particular was just so sad. The cheese plate. It looks like leftovers from an actual cheese plate. Fig and prosciutto pizza were good.

Great spot on back bay section of town. Visited on the day after Christmas and it was fairly empty. A few decent gluten free selections for celiac Annie. Brought my toddler and despite only one or two kids meals available, he loved his pasta with red sauce. I thoroughly enjoyed the pot roast dish served with a bone. Great drink selections and decent service. I'd come again.

Wasn't happy with my waiter Shawn, when it was time for bill, the food was okay really, the price you paid for the food really wasn't the worth the money they are charging for the meals, there are so many places that I could have chosen, to bad it was this I picked, definitely wouldn't recommend it. If I am requesting for something and you say you are to busy to get my request, thanks waiter Shawn you just lost my service to your establishment.

First time dining at Sonsie. Overall a great experience. Very inviting atmosphere and we all thought the food and service were great. The clam chowder was exceptionally good. While the wine list was extensive, I think there could be more options to the dinner menu. What I ordered, I really enjoyed but noticed there weren't too many selections from which I would choose.

The service is good but the food not so much. We ordered a shrimp pizza and they literally gave us two shrimps chopped around the pizza. I asked the manager and she started pointing the pieces of shrimp on the pizza like pretending that I wasn’t right to complain. The homemade potatoes are not fresh and very oily. The mussels are very good with the tomato salsa
