I saw the good reviews and walked 20+ mins to this restaurant to expect some good food. But when I first walked in I was disappointed. Not a welcoming atmosphere. She just called me “excuse me hello” with a blank face to ask me to pick up my go to order. When I open the food after I get home, it is not much flavored. The soup is very watered down and the noodle is so so so thick…. $14 for this…. I definitely have had much better dishes than here. Totally disappointed! And I’m sad about my food.

Came here on a whim and was satisfied. Had #9, the cumin lamb and it was good. The noodles are thick, which I like, but wish they included more meat. It gets pretty congested during lunch time and the wait can be 15mins+. If you are ordering in person, you have to pay via cash; to use credit card you have to order online.

Really fantastic thick noodles. I love garlic and spice and I daresay these were almost too garlicky for me, but I really appreciate that they leaned into the garlic flavor so heavily. COVID note- if you don't pre-order online it's cash-only for walk-ins.

Ordered a number 19 and some lamb skewers. Maybe it was just me or I visited on the wrong day but I had to drink some water after eating a couple bites. Food was flavorful but just salty. The lamb skewers are definitely worth it. The hand pulled noodles were good but not a must try.

so mid. came here yesterday and was really excited because i haven’t had hand pulled noodles since ‘xi’an famous foods’ in new york and ‘chili square’ in quincy, thinking this place would somewhat compare to those spots. i was so wrong; the noodles were heavily doughy and poorly pounded, they ended up sitting in my stomach for the entire night and made me feel queasy. the soup had little to no flavor and the only things i could taste were a little bit of lamb essence and heavy sodium. i asked for half spice and they gave me none, then said they’d charge me an extra dollar for the spice they missed. overall, gene’s does lamb pretty well though. i asked for half spice and it was nicely seasoned and juicy! the skewer i had was one of the only salvaging parts of this experience, as well as the pieces of tender lamb in the hard-to-stomach noodle soup. this place does satisfy cravings for hand-pulled noodles, but you’d be better off going to chili square in quincy for authentic xi’an food instead.

Great value for money in Downtown Boston! This place is highly recommended for take out - they are known for the hand pulled noodles and their wonderfully meaty flatbread sandwiches (w. either lamb or pork filling). The hand-pulled noodles are thick and chewy (not my taste, honestly, but undeniably of good quality) and the broth is amazing. The flatbread sandwiches are a perfect lunch, if you are a meat lover. The meat is well seasoned and the flatbread was wonderfully crunchy. Highly recommended and very cheap! (like $7.00 for a sandwich). This place is super small and if you come hered to dine is be ready to use your elbows to get to your spot (either bar spot or just one table). It's also loud and the atmosphere is non existent. If you're looking for a greattly priced Chinese take out to enjoy at home, I'd highly recommend Gene's!

Gene's Chinese Flatbread Cafe is very near the Hyatt Hotel by the Avenue de Lafayette. It's just across the street from State Street Financial Center. The lamb flat noodles bowl and the lamb flatbread sandwich are both delicious, savory, and reasonably priced. The bread and noodles are freshly made onsite. There are a lot of noodles and lamb underneath the vegetable toppings. There are sauteed onions in the lamb flatbread sandwich. I usually don't care for onions and I ate all of the ones in the sandwich. The lady employee helped me pick out the dishes. There is a small counter of 5 seats where customers can dine. Hot sauce charge is $1. A bottle of water is $3. Cash only.

Ordered hot and sour. Def delicious and punching ya mouth with the most flavor ever. HUGE portion hands down and they're not skimping on the goods. Ratio of broth and other ingredients are perfect. Noodles are impressive especially when they're hand pulled. It was a great time first experience. Would do it again if the noodles were "store bought" than homemade... just my preference. Extremely fatty**

If you are vegetarian this is legit one of the "safest" and tastiest veg dishes. The noodle dishes are assembled with all the ingredients put together, so contamination is highly unlikely. There is no oyster sauce, dirty woks or grills to be concerned with. If you are tired of the same veggie burgers and salad bowls, give this a try. The flavours are amazing for both the biang biang hand pulled noodles and the cold noodles on a hot day. Went here for lunch and dinner and was not disappointed. Vegans will need to specify no egg for the cold noodles.

Great food and service. Bring cash if you order in person. Flatbread pork and lamb are amazing. Lamb noodle soup could bring you back from the dead. High recommended!!!

This place is great, one of my top places I missed during the pandemic work from home. The hand pulled noodles are awesome, just those with a side of lamb skewers and/or tea egg is perfect, but the soups with pulled noodles like in the picture are amazing also. Now (Nov'21) you can order online thru their website, and you can even put in your order and pay with cash when you get there if you want. Gene's is better than ever.

Had Gene's for the first time 6 years ago during a short trip to Boston and returned today to see if it's still as good as I remember - it is. Despite the name, they also have great lamb hand-pulled noodles - chewy with a good bite, flavorful sauce, generous veg and lamb. The flatbreads (lamb or pork) as well as the lamb skewers make a great light meal or snack. For the spice-averse, you can request less or no spice. Walk-in orders are cash only, but you can pay by card and pick-up through their online ordering portal. They also do deliveries by GrubHub/chowbus/doordash. The restaurant itself is tiny, truly a hole in the wall kind of place. Maybe 10 seats total. Most people pick up to-go or eat-in really quickly and don't linger. Will continue to be a stop for me anytime I'm in Boston Chinatown.

5 stars for the price/quality balance. The hand-pulled lamb noodles are what they are most known for (a steal for 13$!), and they're definitely worth a try if you're in the area. It's not the best I've tried compared to other similar places in other cities, but it is the best option in Boston I have been to for this type of food. Noodles are a bit thick and chewy (if that's the texture you prefer then you will love!) and the chili oil and lamb is delicious. Wish there were a bit more vegetables in the bowl, but you can add extra toppings for additional fees. Food came relatively quick for a weekend lunch, but restaurant is very small, so you'll likely be looking at a takeout option if you go at a busy time. They accept both credit and cash, but don't really provide much service for dine in (much more of a self-service type place). Overall great option for fresh hand-pulled noodles in Boston!

Judging based on the food only* So good!! I got a lamb hand pulled noodle soup + pork sandwich. Great combo and portion for someone that doesn’t usually eat a lot. The pork sandwich was crazy juicy. 🐽 I’m a mess after eating.

It was good, but the environment could be better. Also they really don’t serve a lot of picked garlic with the noodles, I got 2 really small cloves after I peeled them, I asked for some more because it was really only enough for my boyfriend and I to have one small bite each, but they didn’t allow it. It’s understandable but still disappointing none the less. But overall I enjoyed the food that I got, I liked that I got to pick my own sized bread pieces for the noodles as well!

This was an horrendous experience. The food was absolutely terrible. My friend and I had the cumin lamb hand pulled noodles. The noddles were very firm and tasteless, and my friend had a bug embedded in one of her noodles. The only flavors in the dish were inferior chili oil and cumin. The dish was half sprouts and carrots with not enough sauce or flavor to disperse into the vegetables. The sprouts were also not properly trimmed. The pork bun was flavorless. The bun was inedible as it had no salt or rise. The pork was akin to canned cat food. I came here expecting a good meal based on the reviews but unfortunately it turned out to be one of the worst meals I've had in Boston. Poor hygiene and poor flavor pretty much sums up this place.

The prices are reasonable and flavors seem authentic! The hand pulled noodles were something new, but were great. Since I got delivery, the noodles were a bit stiff, but that is to be expected when they aren't hot and fresh.

This place is my favorite noodles place. Pictured is a #16. It's so good. I go almost everytime I work in Boston.

The house noodles #4 is a banger. Lamb skewers are amazing. Worth every penny. Hot and sour dumplings #11 pictures below, also delicious.

Good Xi'an food. Would highly recommend the biang biang noodles and tea egg. Lamb skewers were a bit sad. Didn't have that xi'an spice, nor the bbq flavor I was looking for.

The lamb skewers were delicous - well seasoned and fatty, I am so glad we bought 10 of them. The pork flatbread sandwich was very tasty and had more flavour than the lamb one. Speedy service and a great price! Would definitely stop by next time we’re in Boston.

This is probably my favorite place for lunch. I get the #4, extra spicy. It’s essentially just their amazing, thick, chewy noodles with spices, a ton of garlic (in the best way), cilantro, and a little oil. They never miss. Grab a couple of lamb skewers on the side and you won’t regret it! The #4 alone is under $10. They’re super quick as well. Sometimes after ordering online my order is ready in a few minutes.

My husband and I ate here for a late lunch. This is easily one of my top five favorite restaurants that I have been to. We were lucky enough to snag one of the few tables available. Be prepared to take out when you order from here because there were about 4 places to eat. They are cash only if you order inside, but also have options to order online and pay via credit card. We had the lamb skewers, lamb noodles, pork flatbread sandwich, and pork hand pulled noodles. Everything was so fresh and flavorful! I was initially skeptical about the pork flatbread sandwich bc the pork looked dry, but was amazed to find that the pork was juicy and spiced perfectly. The sandwich "bread" was fresh and delicious! My husband loved the lamb and was so happy that he ordered it! I am not a huge fan of lamb, but really enjoyed the skewer! The seasoning was spicy and on point! The star of the show is the hand pulled noodles. They are so fresh that you can watch the chef make it through the kitchen window! Our only regret is that we live in St Louis and can't come here everyday! The prices are more than reasonable.

Their noodles are hand pulled and made fresh. We got their cumin lamb noodles (dry version) and 6 lamb skrewers - both were great. No dine in for COVID and cash only. Took them to the nearby Boston Common to eat. Use delivery app if you want to pay with credit card.

The house noodle soup is amazing! Also, the pulled pork flatbread sandwich is great. Everything I've eaten here was delicious. Service is nice and fast. Get some soup to warm up this fall/winter!

Seasoning was flavorful, every other aspect of the lamb noodles we got was terrible. It was a giant mass of doughy congealed noodles and maybe five little bites of lamb. The lamb was gone in 2 minutes and I was left eating seasoned dough for 20 minutes before I gave up.

  • 5/5 Susie S. 2 years ago on Google
The texture of the handpulled noodles were great and I really liked the stuffing of the lamb sandwiches. The bun for the lamb sandwiches were a bit too dry for my liking though. Lamb skewers really good!

Its still only takeout for now. Still, everything was top notch and pro tip, get the pork or lamb sandwich and put it in your noodle soup. You can thank me later
