It’s a well built gym with tons of different machines for everyone and the staff are friendly. However, they are very bait when it comes to anything related to money. They have initiation fees, pause fees, and even require a 30 day prior notice before cancellation without any notice. The first problem I experienced was when it was during the month of Ramadan, where I had to fast and with work as a student, going to the gym would be impossible. When I requested to have it paused, my account manager said that it wouldn’t be a problem. But without any notice, they just charged me with some amount. After talking to the manager they had it refunded. The second problem I experienced was when I had to focus on my education and wanted to cancel the subscription. I requested the cancellation a week prior and my account manager kept stalling and asking me random questions and when it was finally time for the next month transaction, I was connected to the general manager and was informed that my last day is a month from then. After asking my manager about why there was a transaction even though I asked for it be canceled, I never got a response again. My third problem was when I contacted customer support after 3 weeks because I’ve had midterms and was unable to follow up. I was told over and over again that the club did me a “favor” since cancellation cannot happen until after a year of being a regular. What???? Keep in mind I sent over 4 text messages and 3 emails regarding the situation and the only response I received was “it’ll be affected until __ because there’s 30 day cancellation policy” which was 3 weeks after my first request. As mentioned, very money-grabbing attitudes by the staff, which wasn’t visible in the beginning. As much as I enjoyed the gym atmosphere and my workout routine there, I will not be coming back again due to these problems.

Have seen a serious deterioration in trainers/staff, gym equipment, and the overall “luxury” feel over the past 3 years. Not to mention the price increase this year...not sure why the price is going up when everything else is seemingly deteriorating. The gym is starting to feel more like a BSC than an Equinox..

I've frequented the other locations in the Boston area (Franklin St, Dartmouth St, and Chestnut Hill) and this one just seems to fall short. The facilities aren't as nice, the staff aren't nearly as attentive, and the locker room cleanliness and amenities leave a lot to be desired. I've provided feedback to the club, but alas nothing has come of it. While the location is convenient for getting a workout in before heading to the office, I am not sure that this particular site is worth the cost - it just doesn't seem to live up to the Equinox standard which I have grown to know and love.

They decided to cancel spa appointments we had make weeks in advance last minute (literally within the hour, as we were going to said appointment), then promptly hang up. That is the quality of treatment and service you can expect from this alleged “luxury” facility. Unacceptable employee and management performance for the cost of membership. Do yourself a favor and avoid this gym. Go to literally any other gym in the area, including any other Equinox, just not this one.

Expensive, always packed and partially unprofessional staff (to become a member was painful, at some point Marc threatened to cancel my membership as he was claiming he didn't have all documents, after my wife and I had filled everything out twice already and our credit cards were charged. We could fix this only by reaching out to the management!). Also some of the trainers had an attitude that left me speechless when I asked if there was a chance to stock up the kettle bells (there was only one 14 pound and I needed two). I recommend the David Barton as it has much better pricing, a better number of members to space ratio and very nice, helpful staff.

I wish would have read the reviews before booking a service at what I believed was the Ritz Carlton's Spa. I have always had world class treatment from any Ritz Carlton that we've stayed at. What mistake they made by endorsing the Equinox Sport Club as the spa to represent the Ritz. Terrible, terrible experience at this spa. I called and asked about services that they offered online and they were unaware of all that was online. Poor service from the first phone call to the actual massage. We had to find our own way to the locker room and "waiting area". This was the first time we had ever been there. Again we are used to world class Ritz Carlton service, this was the opposite. When it came time for our couples massage two people came out and took us into different rooms. When I told them I booked a couples massage the response was we can't accommodate a couples massage....just matter of fact, no apology. WHY DIDN'T THEY TELL ME THAT ON THE PHONE! If I wanted a massage I can get that at home. We have busy lives and don't always find the time to relax together, this was time we set aside for each other. When I asked to talk to the club manager they said they would call me. I am still waiting for the call.

Certainly has everything you could want in a sports club. It’s got a ton of space and a great deal of amenities...but MAN, does this location need updating. It’s dirty, dated, and smells(!). One of the reasons you become an equinox member is for pristine condition of your club. That is just not the case here. I’m sure they know it’s time. Equinox is good about keeping these clubs on a renovation rotation. But it’s way overdue here. If they update it out of the early 2000s smelly vibe, it will be one of the best clubs I’ve ever been to. The location and space is really spectacular.

Unfortunately, I had the worst massage of my life here. She had poor technique, and communicated very poorly (especially listening). She also showed up late and was rude throughout. This is the first time I’ve ever left a massage feeling worse than when I arrived. Do not book a massage here unless you are sure the individual massage therapist is at least passable… otherwise you’re likely to get the woman who worked on me! (Worth noting: The spa desk staff were both awesome, extremely helpful, and on the ball. Thank you to them both!)

Really enjoyed going to this gym last summer but I can't recommend it due to a terrible experience with the management. Bassma told me I could join for 10 weeks and then pause my membership at the end of the summer. I told her up front that I would be moving back to New Hampshire to finish school. Turns out they don't do that. Total bait and switch. They will tell you anything to get you to sign up and then change the rules on you. The gym itself is nice - clean, friendly staff, all the equipment you could want. Overall good experience, until the end. I tried to work with them but they charged me a whole extra months membership even though I had moved out of state. They claimed I hadn't given them 30 days notice... You can't do business with people you can't trust. Check out Boston Sports Clubs instead.

I was invited to the gym for the first visit. When I arrived the person who was supposed to do the tour was not there, he did not pick up the phone. The person who did it instead was nice but just did not have the time. I was left alone without any kind of intro to the gym, body analysis, discussions about goals etc. If something like this is advertised and co workers call me for making such explicit arrangements/appointment, I would expect it to happen for the amount of money this gym costs. In total, a lot of empty promises for a lot of money.

I visited Equinox gym last night with my husband as a guest from The Ritz Carlton which is connected to the gym. My husband and I were encouraged to take a walk through the gym as I am a competitive athlete and was very excited to see what this gym had to offer. Unaware of their no camera policy (again we were visitors not members so we were unaware of any policies) I had my phone out to take short video clips of the gym equipment to showcase how nice the facility happened to be. As we were on our way out an employee stops us and kindly informed us that there is a no camera policy, we apologized, I put my phone away and we continued towards the door to leave. As we approached the door an angry member by the name of Joe angrily approached us and looks at me and says "you can't be taking f***ing pictures in here" then turns to my husband and says "you a**hole I know two Boston police officers and I will have you two arrested". My husband says excuse me and who are you? Joe replies "I'm the owner". BIG lie. Joe was literally Joe blow the average member at his local gym who apparently was highly bothered by an Italian man with his Black American wife taking a tour through the gym he belongs to. His disrespectful vulgarity, insults, and threats were not taken lightly. I was in fear as now days you don't know who has a gun and will use it. I ask the Equinox staff to call the police and NOT ONE STAFF MEMBER CALLED THE POLICE! After several requests for the police to be called I finally called them myself and filed a report against Joe. Thankfully EVERYTHING was captured on video. A female manager of Equinox actually reviews the video and confirmed that Joe approached us and incited this situation. Equinox did not do one thing to make me feel at ease and I do NOT recommend this gym to anyone. STAY AWAY FROM EQUINOX IF YOU ARE HARASSED OR THREATENED THEY DO NOT CARE. Extremely poor service. **By the way there are all kinds of videos taken at this very location on Instagram.**

It's fine. Just fine. Standard equipment, great instructors but a terrible layout to the space. Why is there a little weight area under the stairs near the cardio equipment? You can't even stand up without hitting your head. The testosterone pit weight area is also not very well laid out. A place that big and they can't make decent use of space where people aren't constantly working out on top of each other as if we were crammed in. The upstairs is really hot. The place needs a fan everywhere. The showers are a hit or miss. It's like no one maintains any of the showerheads. I would say 70% of showers have poor water flow. Steam room has no steam. Lockers are really smushed together. And bringing a visitor is a non starter. It's way overpriced and for what? just so they can sell you more useless services. I still go sometimes but the weather has to be really bad for me to show up there.

Overwhelmingly underwhelmed with my experience visiting equinox as part of my stay at the adjacent hotel. The front desk staff were rude and unhelpful, and the morning manager Matt had a bad attitude when asked for standard information. I was told by the staff that they only accepted cash and were unable to process credit card payments to book a squash court, which is insane in 2022 at a supposedly state of the art fitness company. The racquets they had on loan were pretty beat up so I would recommend packing your own if you want to play squash

Spa reception staff is terrible. Not well trained, not polite and always unable to find booked and confirmed appts ( appts confirmed by Equinox Spa themselves!) on day of service. There is always confusion on their part, nobody picks up phone when called, and usually can not find attendant at front desk....for an establishment to advertise itself as a sophisticated sports facility and spa, it definitely does not live up to its reputation.

I feel like I was cheated out of my money. I received a wax from the spa at there sports club location in Boston and the woman was great but had missed some spots leaving hair patches. I didn’t notice right away but called to speak with the manger to ask for a refund since I couldn’t make it in-person for them to fix and she rudely declined and said she wouldn’t refund me. I offered to send her pictures as proof but again she declined. I emailed the general manager, Curtis Duffy, to express his coworker‘s lack of professionalism and he chose to be condescending and take her side without contacting me to hear my complaint. He also continued to insinuate that it was my fault for the situation, suggesting that I go somewhere else to get my services done. As a paying customer that is beyond unprofessional. Curtis the GM was unethical the way he handled the situation that I wouldn’t even bother joining there gym.

The spa front desk is super awful! I had membership package with remaining balance in facial, and I tried to use it up due to I moved to new place and now the spa is quite far away from my home; I no longer want to have further service there due to the traffic. But every time I checkout at the spa, the front desk withdrawals from my credit card not my remaining credit balance of the package even though I’ve told them the payment method in advance, I addressed the problem onsite and the front desk said they would refund me in 3 business days sry about their mistake, but it’s not happened as they promised, I followed up with calls multiple times however the spa barely picked up calls, someone finally answered and said they would refund me and change the payment method, but it ended with ignorance as is again. I believe there’s no way to use my package remaining balance but keep contributing payment from my card towards the service, it’s super awful experience and please be careful to signup any packages & depositing money to them!!!

It's a nice gym, and I liked everything about it when it used to be Sports Club LA. The Equinox people have put their own imprimatur on things, and it doesn't feel as customer-friendly as it did. I expect to cancel my membership as soon as I can figure out a good alternative.

After speaking to more than four people from this gym asking about referral bonus, I just checked my account today, and there is still nothing. It has been over half a year and I'm extremely disturbed by how the management of this club misleads the members and falsely promises referral bonuses. If you are not going to give out referral bonus, please don't LIE and say you will!!! The one star is just for some of the instructors, who are actually great

I went in to check out the gym and evaluate whether I should sign up for just a month before moving from Boston. Fiona was so wonderful and showed me all around, explained all my options and got me really excited about all the amazing amenities at this gym. Sadly I won’t be signing up due to my travel schedule but I would highly recommend the facility and it’s staff.

Rachael K. was so helpful while giving me a tour of the gym and getting my membership set up. I honestly don’t think I would’ve purchased extra Pilates classes if it hadn’t been for her! Amazing at her job and super knowledgeable about Equinox and all the best features. She was able to give me a few recommendations and personalized my membership to suit my needs, which I’m super grateful for. If you’re going to purchase a membership or want to find out more, I would definitely ask for Rachael.

The gym is fine however the service was terrible. Matthew at the desk is awful. We were let in three times to go to the gym and the third time Matthew did not let us in I would not recommend going to this gym. Or dealing with Matthew. The first three times we went we were asked to have an adult just sign us in but Matthew didn’t let the adult sign us in and kept on stating this is an adults club even though there were many people my age at the gym.

Went for a one day trial. Found the place very pretentious, everyone working out seemed very self involved, the front desk staff was unhelpful, didn't even point out where the locker room was, no tour or information whatsoever, classes were absolutely huge with people, steam room was packed to the gills with men in towels, very uncomfortable to sit in, place overall didn't really seem that clean, I think you would find most of the same equipment at a planet fitness for 50 cents a day, there were good looking people so there's that, currently quoting $257 a month and $150 enrollment fee if you don't have a corporate or school affiliation.

Made spa appointments assuming that since they are affiliated with the Ritz Carlton the spa would be of the same standards. It is not. Equinox Spa has treatment rooms within the fitness facility. It does not have a spa feeling at all. The person who did my facial was very knowledgeable; but for the price; go to an actual spa in Boston such as the Mandarin.

One of the BEST facials ever! We booked 2 facials for a birthday wknd. Arrival was great and we had a day pass from just the spa booking. So we showed up an hour early to relax in the sauna. We did so solo, they are divided by gender. I had the Hydra Facial with a Brighten add-on and my esthetician was excellent. The texture of my skin today is butter soft and her extractions were thorough. My guy had a renew facial with an LED enhancement, he says he fell asleep lol...anyway. great facility, pretty large. Great experience. If we lived here it would be our place for facials. Worth a booking!!

BEST massage by Ali! I travel everywhere and get a massage wherever I travel and also when I am at home (every 2-3 weeks). Ali gave me an amazing massage yesterday, she had the right touch and pressure plus a great personality. I left there feeling refreshed and can't wait to book my next massage with her and will make the hour drive to do so!

Equinox in Ritz-Carlton Boston's outstanding quality and atmosphere not only make using the gym a pleasure but also motivate me to come for my daily workouts. In addition, the outside view is amazing. Had a boxing class with Jim. Great explanation of the moves. Really fun class. Felt so energetic after it. Recommend to attend.

I enjoy the convenience of taking fitness classes here regularly. Trainers are excellent and classes are well-designed. The only thing I want to complain about is some rude members in the barre classes. They step on your mat barefoot without being apologetic, attend classes without signing up, talk distractingly loud with friends, and are territorial (take unnecessarily more space than they need when the class is fully booked).

I wish I read all the negative reviews before coming here. What a waste of money and time. This spa is NOT associated with the Ritz--even though the Ritz promotes them directly on their website. Hands down the BEST Equinox in Boston for too many reasons to name. I frequent other Boston locations and none come close to the Avery St. location. The best part is the spaciousness -- the lobby, the locker rooms, the weights area, the cardio area, the stretching areas, the roof deck... It's amazing how much space there is compared to other locations. The towels are soft and absorbent, nothing is every broken down or in need of repair, all the equipment is in the best shape, and the instructors are very personable and motivating. For all the amenities you receive as a member, it is VERY easy to justify the price of a membership.

  • 5/5 Marcin T. 4 years ago on Google
They have a fantastic swimming pool here (which is hard to find in Boston). Around 25 metres/yards long with 4 lanes and almost nobody is using this pool, even when the rest of the gym is really crowded. After swimming (or normal gym workout) you have a choice of sauna and a steam room.

Absolutely love Equinox and looking forward to coming back as a member again now that COVID restrictions have lifted. By far one of the best gyms in Boston. Super clean facility, the staff are great and my membership advisor Layla has been exceptional to work with! It was great having access to the Equinox+ app to workout at home while the gyms were shut down.
