I have been going to this gym since March 2022. I think the bouldering route setting is very mediocre and although they claim to be an inclusive gym, I find the routes are often more advantageous for tall climbers (routes are often made harder by increasing the distance). I would appreciate if the route setters could give some thoughts on "short person's beta". The rope climbing is decent, I particularly like the "tongue" and the lead climbing section. However, it seems that the rope climbing area has gotten smaller with the new renovations, so I am not happy about that. Cambridge already has a a boulder-only CRG and I don’t see the point of having another bouldering focused gym. A nice addition of this gym to the area would be the rope section. The new co-working space is a bit ridiculous, very small and dark. It’s not suitable for working at all. Generally I think they could invest a bit more in designing a visually pleasing hang out area. Now it just looks like they didn’t know what to do with the couches and tables. I also obviously don’t like that they are increasing prices with less than a month of notice.

Pros: Lovely staff, huge gym in general Cons: Increased prices from 115 to 135 with one months notice. Seriously, what the heck? This is the main reason for my rating. Summer program is a glorified daycare with kids running everywhere, especially on the mats. I don’t mind kids but there are way too many for the staff to handle. Wood walls make it impossible to smear, which is quite necessary for bouldering. Route setting highly favors tall folks.

The gym is one of the best located and most convenient climbing gyms in Boston with a very kind front desk staff and some very comfortable chairs in their lounge spaces. That’s about the end of the nice things I have to say when it comes to the bouldering project (formerly known as Brooklyn boulders but still under the same hapless management). The problems with the gym are numerous; one of the major ones is the over-enrollment of the gym and frequent closing or altering of hours for their youth teams or competitions that most of their climbing base doesn’t utilize. If you go during any kind of a peak hour at the gym you will find long lines of people waiting on the edge of the bouldering area downstairs and upstairs, the ropes climbing walls are slightly less occupied (probably due to the lack of belay certification time slots and issues with having staff available for those tests) but still for the beginner to novice level walls there will be a line. This would lead you to use some of their fitness equipment while you wait for it to slow down right? Well guess again! The fitness area is also overcrowded and the downstairs racks are even reserved on weekdays during the hours of 5-7 for the youth team (even if they aren’t using it- still reserved). Once you find a place to get your workout started- you might find it hard to get into the workout because the HVAC system isn’t working currently and has had issues since the pandemic began. Nothing like a hot gym in the summer! If the heat is for you it might be your spot but you can’t step it up to the next level as the Sauna isn’t in working condition either. The general manager of the gym has made it known that they are “working on” getting the funds for the sauna and HVAC system but that they haven’t been able to fix it or secure those funds in the last year. They promised to be working on these issues after the switch from BKB to the bouldering project but have yet again fallen short of their promises with no work done and the GM non responsive to email questions about the process and when they might actually get the gym fixed and in working order. The classes offered are starting to come back to the prepandemic level but still only offer small numbers of yoga or fitness classes with those slots generally filling up really quickly for any kind of popular time. This is all while being the most expensive climbing gym in the greater Boston area with memberships being $135 a month. If you are looking for a climbing gym to commit to I would much rather join Central Rock Gym or MetroRock as they keep their facilities up to date and cost less than the bouldering project. Giving two stars because the staff is really nice and the people are the gym are generally great- the gym is just overpriced and underfunded. Too many problems they need to fix and it isn’t fair for a company that charges this much to ask their members to wait (18+ months on the sauna and over a year on the HVAC repairs).

Nice large place. The bouldering is medium-large, but there are still not THAT many problems. Problems have V grades and are marked by the same color hold, with the top hold marked by tape or at the top edge of the wall. Setting is nice, but the holds are super greasy and chalky, give them a brush, people! Friendly staff.

Nice bouldering gym. The bouldering is two áreas. One downstairs that replicates a tall bouldering competition wall and a smaller and shorter bouldering wall upstairs. Good amount of problems to keep you busy for many sessions. Setters are very creative and use the wall inclination very well. Rope walls are great. They have plenty of top rope and lead only routes. Friendly staff. Clean restrooms and showers.

WARNING for anyone considering climbing here: I was introduced by a friend of mine and enjoyed coming so much that I became an active member. I even started to introduce other friends of mine, some of whom became members, too. But when I brought some of my non-white friends (I'm white), staff refused to honor the advertised discount prices for first-time climbers -- the same price that myself and other friends had received just days before. When I tried to show the staff their own website, they immediately threatened to call the cops on us. When I contacted management to express my frustration, they essentially responded by cancelling my membership. They didn't refund the three weeks that I had paid for and tried to keep charging my card (I blocked the card). When I tried to contact upper management, there was no response. I really wish this was a fake review, but unfortunately it's 100% real. There are climbing gyms in Boston that do not engage in illegal and racist activities.

Amazing climbing / training facility. Friendly staff and well kept equipment / setup. The routes have good variety and are challenging. Steep membership fee but do keep an eye out for promotions!

Bouldering wall is laminated so makes it impossible to smear and actually dangerous without any grip on the walls. Definitely not for beginners. The steep entry price of $35 for my partner stung as they could only really climb 1-3 routes max in the entire gym. Needs to be better to be more inclusive of all skill ranges.

Great bouldering gym, with lots of top rope, and leading options. It might few of the gyms which have such heightened walls to climb. Great vibe

There is a serious problem with over enrollment here. During the week, there are so many people with day passes and/or teams having practice sessions that it is nearly impossible to have a productive session at the gym. There either needs to be 1. Less generous day pass discounts. 2. Higher prices for monthly members There are much better climbing gyms in metro boston. The overcrowding makes in unenjoyable for first timers and full members like myself. It's a bummer since the route setting is really good! You just won't get to climb them unless you come during an off hour

Huge gym. Pleasant space. Stuck to bouldering as I was traveling and didn't bring gear other than shoes. The problems seemed a bit straight forward and simple, taking away some of the fun in figuring out the beta. They lent me a chalk bag which I really appreciated as the liquid chalk I brought didn't work well for my sweaty fingertips. Definitely positive experience overall!

Came here with a friend using his visitor pass. I believe this place used to be called Brooklyn Boulders, but they have rebranded in whichever city they are in. There are a variety of climbing activities besides bouldering like top rope, which requires a certified belaying expert. A very friendly and opening atmosphere. Everyone was kind and courteous. The difficulties were clearly mapped out, and I didn't think any run was unfair. I am a beginner climber, and my experience was very positive. The routes are changed fairly regularly on a round robin basis, so there are also new routes to try.

Great climbing gym with friendly staff. Grades are by color and not on the V scale so they give you a bit more of a feeling of liberty to try different colors. Staff helped with selection of shoes giving us lots of sizes and options. I only bouldered but the climbing walls also looked pretty cool. The fitness area upstairs was suitable, took care of what I needed for lifting. Lots of places to sit and do work as well if that’s your thing (It was my thing today). Overall would recommend.

It's a corporate mega gym with all the benefits and drawbacks. Expensive, but worth the price. They are actually expanding their facilities, which is a good sign and keeps me wanting to pay dues. Go at off hours if you are a serious climber, oversubscribed horrendously otherwise. The good: - If you are new to climbing, this is a great place to get started since they have lots of space to try everything out. - If you are an experienced climber, they reset frequently enough that you won't get bored and they have the best accessory equipment of any gym I have ever visited (weights, kilter board, hangboards, etc.). - The hours are AMAZING. The only gym I have ever seen that opens early, great for climbing before work. The bad: - Basically turns into a daycare on the weekends with unsupervised kids running all over the place. Get there early if you want to get a decent session in. - Expensive, just like the rest of Cambridge. Day pass with rentals was almost $30. - Circuit grading on the boulders (though you might not care about this one): Most climbs are all crimps, all pinches, etc. with no variety. Sometimes you will endlessly project a V3-5 and then flash the V6-8 right next to it. Some of the climbs are just egregiously reach-y. Thankfully with so many boulders set you can always find something to work on, but it's annoying regardless. Unrelated to the actual facility itself - this is the SINGLE CHALKIEST gym I have EVER climbed at. Seriously, there are other gyms in the area that have those bulk bowls of chalk out in the bouldering area that are STILL less chalky than this place. People just layer it on here and I have no idea why. Routinely have to brush holds that are just caked in a thick layer of chalk to the point that they have zero texture. Truly baffling.

Birch wall - looks nice, but you can't smear those. Smelly and poorly ventilated. The washroom faucets are so economical with water, it's impossible to wash one's hands. Menstrual tampons in the men's room.

UPDATE: Started with a disagreement with their shoe policy regarding minimalist footwear, but the managers were very responsive and updated the policy to include sock-shoes, Vibrams, etc. I haven't experienced the full facility yet (that's a good thing as I'll explain) since I'm still building up strength on the bouldering wall and haven't taken the auto-belay training yet. The training is included in the membership and rope-assisted climbing is two-thirds of the facility, but that smaller third is more than enough to keep me occupied for several weeks! They even re-set the climbs every couple weeks, so you can absolutely progress at your own pace of skill-development.

A fantastic climbing gym! Very reasonably priced, with a super helpful and friendly staff. A very large selection of available climbs and even fitness equipment. Everyone that goes there is also super friendly. If you’re interested, give it a shot, their one month intro membership is very much worth it!

Nice paintings and designs on the walls and roof, it is a good place to try out bouldering, but for level ups, it could include more types of challenges.

I have been here a couple times with my friends now. As a complete beginner, I really only have tried some bouldering and the auto-belays, but those were both a lot of fun. My first couple experiences were fantastic. The staff was super helpful and friendly, as well as genuinely knowledgeable about rock climbing and were patient and helpful with me and my friends. The other climbers were also friendly and helpful as well which was really cool. The auto-belays are simple to use and great for beginners. Overall very happy with my experience and definitely plan on coming back.

Been coming here for about a year and absolutely love it. Started my climbing journey at BBP and the people / staff are very welcoming. They change things up regularly, so there’s always something new to try out. Decent amenities (bring back the two towel allowance for the sauna!). Only gripe is the amount of children running around during peak hours. Can sometimes feel like an indoor playground.

climbed here during the pandemic consistently… came recently with new ownership… huge bummer… bouldering project killed the visuals of the gym… the setting is mediocre… the space is much less maintained… brooklyn boulders was incredibly clean and well maintained… sad to see this gym

Great gym and vibe. It's very big with plenty of routes. For boulders they have a lot of overhang. The rental shoes and chalk bag are free for first timers. But those shoes are very slippery

Our only experience is with the camp, which my son loved, and he is normally quite critical of camps. He had fun every day and said the activities and staff were great. Also, they were organized and careful with checkout especially (ID check). We will be back!

FYI when I visited on 2/17/23 several of the 1st & 2nd floor spaces & rooms had active construction going on, with paint smell & power tool sounds throughout. They kindly allowed me to save the day pass I paid for for a future visit.

Awesome place to climb, work out, and generally blow off steam. Thinking about getting a monthly membership but I've gone twice and I love it. I'm a new climber and there's no shortage of challenging routes.

The place looks cool, was very much looking forward to trying out a class which was advertised as free on mindbody app but soon arriving found out it was not. I think the staff lacks the customer service expertise, as the guy in the counter didn't even acknowledge mistake on their part and didn't let me take the class for free as advertised despite going all the way there. Instead he wanted to charge the full gym day's worth. Shame they lack focus on the customer.
