Beautiful setting, very friendly and accommodating staff, comfortable room, nice common area and pool. The mountain trails around the lodge are unforgettable.

Lovely cut grass for camping, ablutions are clean and well kept. Upon arrival the receptionists wasn't really informative about where the camp site is. We went looking for it but all the lights were off and we had trouble finding a camping spot. Only one light outside for the entire camping site. Didn't have power points. In the morning around 06H00 we were woken up by staff opening and closing the barn door next to us constantly and loud talking. Not the most pleasant experience.

Sani Lodge is one of the most welcoming places we visited in KZN. The staff was very helpful and kind. The food was delicious and the room was very comfortable! Great stay and special thanks to Janet ;)

Sani Lodge is a jewel right in the drakensberg mountains. Everything about this place is amazing. Very clean, friendly people and the hiking trails start right at the door! You can see the owners put a lot of love and effort into building this little oasis. As a noise sensitive person I enjoyed the quiet and peaceful surroundings so much. As a photographer and filmmaker this little spot on the earth gave me everything I needed. Thank you sani lodge and keep up the great work!

Amazing place , you can choose your level of accommodation, restaurant very good , sit watching sun go down by the pool even when there’s snow on the mountains, it’s my go to place , 5 times I’ve stayed here . There are great hikes from the lodge which takes you through rivers and small waterfalls 👍

Nice backpackers lodge with a kitchen, swimming pool and common room with games. If you're doing the giants cup trail they have a list with numbers of people that can bring you back to your car at the end of the hike.

A great spot to stay. Clean and tidy with lots of lovely spaces - coffee shop, common room, games room and simple but comforatable accommodation. Most importantly, wonderful hikes right on your door step. And right near the Sani Pass.

Stunning place to orientate yourself in the Drakensberg - friendly advice, brilliant range of tours and activities and all conscientiously supporting local people and eco-tourism. Topped with amazing fresh produce from their farm and hearty fresh dinners after a day's hiking! Also really clean and professional accommodation.

Honestly a mandatory stop for a pint after ploughing up sani pass. Edit : Yes this review was for the bar at the top of the pass. Silly me. However, the backpackers thoroughly deserves 5 stars as well. Awesome place to stay after a great adventure. Super clean and comfortable at an incredible price. Friendly folks are always present in the common room it seems. Great place to make new pals. Looking forward to going back.

The owner is an awesome guide, and the place sits really nice inside the forest, with some hiking trails going right outside of it. Rooms are not that great but managable

Backpackers lodge with a beautiful view. The only disappointment is that they won’t share any info about Lesotho for travelers who is wishing for a solo travel that isn’t part of their day trips deals.. so I wasn’t that happy. For all the walking travelers- To go to Lesotho you take a minibus taxi from Underberg that is going at 6:30 and 8:00. To get there at time from this backpackers place it’s a private taxi that costs 200R. The place was clean, the sharing area was cozy and nice.

Rooms are basic but all you need really and comfortable. We spent one night after coming back from Sani Pass. The shared ablutions were spotless. The communal kitchen and common room well fitted and spacious....may I suggest a few board games. We enjoyed a lovely stroll around the property the next morning.

Went for a camping trip and it was absolutely lovely. Ample space to set up tents, shared kitchen was ideal with gas burner stoves, hot water to clean cutlery and pots and pans, shared ablution facility was clean with hot showers. There was also a restaurant on the premises if you didn't want to cook. I would highly recommend camping at Sani Lodge Backpackers. Very affordable option to get away from the city, offering amazing views.

The facility is beautiful - breathtaking views, a lot of attention put into the various detail-rich features that make this place unique - the cosy community room, the café, the pottery and plant shop, delicious 3-course dinner (home made)... simple but clean rooms, a unique experience to sleep in a traditional locally-inspired hut, very friendly staff. The sustainable tourism concept of the lodge seems very genuine and you feel this during the entire stay. Much more than just an accomodation! Our highlight: we had a just perfect day with our guide Dean on the Sani Pass. He is very knowledgeable about the nature, wildlife, culture, interacted very naturally with the Basotho people we met (he can speak the language). We had very nice talks the entire day and felt in good hands driving up the pass in the land rover! We would love to come back in warmer (!!) days to discover more of the region and get to enjoy the amazing place! Philipp & Magdalena

Second time staying there. You can make easy trips up Sani Pass with a guide you book at reception. Also a lot of people start hiking from there. Nice camp fires in the evenings and interesting people that you will meet there. Will use it again.

Our group, Dusty Mountain - Self Drive Overlanding, planned to camp at Sani Backpackers. Our group consisted of 9 overland vehicles. Due to heavy rains, the grass in the campsite was flooded and too muddy. It would have resulted in a spectacular mud bath for us camping there. The managment at the backpackers however cleared the paved parking lot for us and we managed to set up camp there, fitting all 9 vehicles with roof top tents and a few dome tents.

If you are looking for a great, quiet, peaceful place with an amazing staff ready to assist with all your questions and needs, The Sani Lodge is the place you should definitely go to! As a family of 5 with young children (the Lil one was not even 2 by the time we came), we booked the Aloe cottage which was just perfect! It is perfectly clean, well furnished and equipped. We were provided wood for the fireplace everyday and fresh milk. We had dîner twice at the restaurant and were sooo happy to have a very good 3 courses dîner including veggies. We also booked a tour to the Sani pass that I also recommend! To make it short : we loved our sani lodge experience and would recommend it to anyone coming in the area

Beautiful place, very clean, friendly staff and very helpful. Thank you sis Marry you are very kind. They helped us make fire, supplied us with firewood and fresh milk. The tour was worth everything with a super cool tour guide, Tsebo. I could come back anytime.

A great, budget-friendly place to stay. The views are amazing and the staff were super friendly and helpful. The bathrooms and common areas are clean, with everything you need provided. I was particularly fond of the domestic cats roaming around, even had one sleep in my room after I invited it in. Overall, would definitely visit again.

I stayed at Sani Lodge Backpackers for 3 day 2 nights and did the Sani Pass day tour. Incredible experience overall. Room and facilities were clean and organized. The vibe across the lodge was warm, welcoming and clearly built with a lot of heart over the years. The food at Giants Cup Cafe, especially the fresh milk, was delicious! Neil, our guide for the Sani Pass day tour was very knowledgeable and friendly. Russell was very informative and helpful even before I booked my stay, patiently supplying me with information about travelling across Lesotho and tailoring a best-fit plan. Also had a great time with Mondli who drove me from the lodge and into Semonkong, Lesotho. Most of all, i respect the effort and heart the team has taken to build fair trade tourism with the local communities. Thank you for the hospitality!

We camped for 1 night and didn't have the best experience. The bathrooms was really neat and well kept, but unfortunately when we arrived, all of the lights in the camping area was off and we were unable to completely understand where our allocated camping site was. During the next morning we were woken up just after 06h00 by workers opening and closing shed doors next to our tent and talking extremely loud.

I really enjoyed the four days I spent with the fine folk of Sani Lodge. Accommodation was basic and sparse but perfect for a solo traveler and perfectly priced too. Perhaps the best part of Sani Lodge is the perpetually smiling helpful staff.

Sani Lodge Backpackers is a beautiful and tranquil haven set on the foot of the majestic Drakensberg Mountains. With close access to Sani Pass and several renown hiking trails, it is wonderfully located for an adventure into this beautiful mountain reserve. The rooms are clean and comfortable without the tourist price tags and the staff go out of their way to ensure a comfortable stay. The lodge works closely with the community, ensuring social upliftment while simultaneously creating a memorable and authentic experience for every person that visits. It boasts a lovely coffee shop, pottery studio, guided hikes, Lesotho tours and game room. Loved it and I will definitely return!

Amazing place! Wonderful views! De dorms are not big, but you don't have to spend a lot of time overthere because there are a lot of things to do and in the evening you can chill around the fire in the common room. Rooms, toilets, showers, kitchen, all are super clean. Diner together is delicious and nice to meet people. Maria did her best to make everyone feel welcome. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I stayed longer than was planned. Definitely a recommendation!!!

I spent 3 nights at Sani lodge in a single room last weekend, booked the essential drakensberg package. What a special weekend! Highlights: - 3 course meals at giants cup Cafe were delicious! - sani pass 4x4 trip into Lesotho with lunch in the village is a great day out. Our guide Dane was very knowledgeable about the pass, birdlife and flowers as well as Lesotho life. He also spoke in Basotho with locals which was very refreshing and made the day very relaxed rather than feeling like we were running to a strict schedule. - day in the life of a bushman hike guided by Stuart. Another great day out included in the package, I was very happy to know that there was no minimum number - the guided hike ran with just myself and the guide. Super interesting and a nice easy day hike with a great packed lunch included. - while I was out each day, the lovely staff did my laundry and the lodge always felt safe and welcoming. - note limited reception and internet but wifi is available at the restaurant and was pretty reliable when I used it. - my room also had lights on generator during load shedding which was very helpful. Great stay, highly recommend making the trip!

Good day, My self and 4 other gents stayed at Honeyguide cottage from 18-20 Aug 23. From the inception of our enquiries until we left , Jabu was my no. 1 Host , i almost stayed longer just to see her smile(fact). All staff pass you with a smile and a greet . We were made to feel like family,(even the gentlemen watering the plants is polite) At no time did we feel we were away from home, the advice from Jabu on the hiking trails was informative, we did the Stromness hike which was about 14km punctuated by pure bliss and streams. Although there was load shedding as expected , we were briefed on what to expect and the gas stove inside the cottage was a bonus. The fire place was always stocked with fire wood and the complimentary unpasterurized milk was gladly received by all of us except one of the guys whose tummy started revolting for a a day and a half. I would recommend Sani Backpackers Lodge to anyone who wants affordable rustic living. If you are large group of more than 4 , i beleive Honeyguide is the best coattge , because it is secluded from other cottages and rondavels, the view is spectacular and you may have the privilecge of being visited by 2 cats and friendly jack russel. Reception may be a problem but there is complimentary wifi at the cafe, The trails are all well kept, we did meet a berg adder on the trails , all you got to do is give them their space and not be alarmed. enough of my bible story lol, Thank you Team(im actually referring to Jabu...wink wink)

Awesome place. Good atmosphere , nice view and staffs. Wifi is hardly working. A lot of people and group tours come for hiking. Restaurant just around the conner serving dinner from 18.30 at 155 rands per person.Small souvenir shop and arts sell inside. But you cannot chose the menu. They have both private as a lodge.Backpacking and camp ground are at the same place.

One of my favourite backpackers so far - spent three nights here while travelling around ZA. Lovely informative staff, excellent tours, beautiful surrounds, wonderful outdoor fire pit / braai area, and very cute communal areas. Also great value for money with lots of hikes surrounding the property. Main complaint was that the property doesn’t have WiFi... which as I work from home was an issue. If you have a car and you need to get some work done I’d suggest driving into Underberg and going to the Daily Grind. Decent internet + good coffee.

Sani Lodge Backpackers is a great place to rest your weary feet after a hike up the mountains. The staff are friendly, the bathroom facilities are kept clean and the rooms are tidy and have heaters for cold nights. My favourite spot is the communal lounge and kitchen area. It's felt like home with a well equipped kitchen and a roaring wood fire that adds to the coziness of the place. You have to try the fresh milk from their own cows. What makes this place more attractive is their commitment to sustainability and being friendly to their environment right down to their recycling policies, and saving teabags for use as firelighters. I would definately stay there again on my next adventures.

Loved this spot ! Beautifully located at the south of the Drakensberg range ! 1 hour from the top of sani pass , tours offered if you don’t have a 4 x 4 car . Lovely common space kitchen and couch area with a lovely stove for cooler winter nights . Very clean !! There are a handful of great trails here that start right from the lodge so you don’t have to drive anywhere . Some require a permit for R45 pp . Just a 30 minute hike up the mountain offers amazing views of the mountains and valley around you! So gorgeous ! Hike with the Baboons and cows !

Foam mattress bunk beds were rickety and unsupportive. Each bed had a flat sheet, 2 blankets and a duvet so we were very snug and warm. Gas supply for hot water was lacking for the kitchen. No toaster or kettle. We made use of the campers showers as they were not affected by others using water in the house - we were a party of 27. The house could have done with two showers upstairs as there was hot water supplied to the hand basins.

Their website put on their options of how to get there, to go by local taxi. I had no idea what that meant and thought it was a proper option. I wanted to go straight to Lesotho as it was the harder trip and then end in sani lodge at. I arrived at Pietermaritzburg by baz bus and waited from 9am-2 pm to leave. They finally arrived in Lesotho at 4.30 and allowed all the Africans on the Lesotho taxi but told me they were full. Thankfully, one guy who was there before, moved over. They yelled and screamed for 45m and sped up in the dark just before the border closed. They arrived at the top and said ‘out’ 10 minutes before they were ready with my passport. There were 95kmh hour winds and I got a shock. The border dropped me to sani mountain lodge. This journey took 11 hours. Arriving at the bottom (to sani lodge) by shuttle would have taken 2 and everyone goes up from there. But I couldn’t have known that. When I was done in Lesotho, I told them I was coming for 3 nights. I told them what happened to me, the wife realised they charge as much as a shuttle for that horrid journey and said she might take it off but Russel was rolling his eyes saying it’s another way to get there and he needs to put out that information! It’s scary and dangerous for a woman alone. They said Saturday was be tricky but they’d sort something. When the hostel was half full they made me change rooms 3 times the first 2 nights. I never could wake up and just get on with my day. There were no phone plugs only in the kitchen which wasted time. I left for a hike on an unmarked trail and didn’t know where to turn. I contacted them, Russel the owner kept trying to call my WhatsApp when signal was bad and I had to say over and over to call my phone and I had called but airtime ran out. After 1.3 hours he finally called to say I should turn around when I was halfway- no way! I completed the hike and crossed from where I was even thought it was too high up as he couldn’t explain. I shouldn’t have waited to hear that from a guy who thinks a local taxi is fine, but I can’t finish a hike. On Saturday they put me somewhere off the property which was hard to get to in the dark and by then I was so angry. I should have left the day before. It meant that I had to wait till 10 and I was already insulted being moved for the 4th time. There was no WiFi making it difficult to even enjoy speaking to a friend when I needed to. They wouldn’t lock the cottage but had the nerve to put my toiletries back which were drying in a case which contained other things like medication and mosquito bands and the shampoo was open! I messaged him and he responded with ‘shame, bad things follow you everywhere’. No its nasty people, who can’t do anything I ask like lock a door where others have valuables, but can interfere with my belongings. They said it was due to only having groups (incorrect), but it doesn’t explain the first 3 room changes when the place was half empty. Not every single person there was in a group and booked ahead. They lie about everything, saying they locked the door. Thankfully they got rid of the ants in the cottage and put a light in the bathroom. They said I should be glad for the upgrade! An upgrade I never wanted, wrecking my morning, is no upgrade. He could have upgraded 2 people travelling together or arriving the day it was getting full, and not move me again. Other SA guests were horrified when they heard I took a local taxi -as they would never- and were shocked it was on the website. Other staff and travellers in Lesotho thought it was dangerous and reckless and that if I told them what happened they would remove it. I wished I wasn’t travelling alone so I wouldn’t have been moved 4 times during a 3 night stay. It’s not my bad luck, it’s peoples disrespect when someone foreign is travelling alone, and had an unfair experience previously and they think that person can just be treated anyhow. I could see the bad signs when they disregarded the taxi issue.

Stayed here a year ago in January, it's the perfect place if you want to then do a trip up sani pass to Lesotho. We did a 3 day walking tour of Lesotho with our top top guide Phillip, I can't recommend it enough. All the home stays were just fantastic with homemade bread and traditional Lesotho food and really warm hospitality from the families hosting. I learned so much and it really is a beautiful country, each day got better and better definitely worth the money and worth to spend three days getting deeper rather than just the one night option. It was the highlight of our one month holiday exploring South Africa and Lesotho. If I ever cam back i'd do it again and this time leave 3 days for camping and exploring the Drakensberg area around the Sani Lodge fresh water everywhere and caves all around make it a really fun area to explore very easily -with the right guide obviously. I would highly recommend going with Philip if you want to walk and explore and ask questions and learn about the birds and wildlife and the people of Lesotho. Sorry it took me a year to write the review! Anybody thinking about going - it's a must! Give yourself a week here. Love Toby and Emily
