The Cathedral of St Etienne of Bourges, built between the late 12th and late 13th centuries, is one of the great masterpieces of Gothic art and is admired for its proportions and the unity of its design. The tympanum, sculptures and stained-glass windows are particularly striking. Apart from the beauty of the architecture, it attests to the power of Christianity in medieval France.

Some of the nicest preserved stained glass around. You can get right up under it to see the layering techniques as well. The adjacent garden is also beautiful. Well worth a detour.

Great gothic architecture, but the medieval stained glass is jaw-dropping.

Lovely spot to stop for a while. If you understand French then there are QR codes all over for a guided tour. I would have loved to have been able to pick English since my french is just marginally functional for day to day stuff so I had a hard time following it. Absolutely beautiful though.

Fantastic Cathedral to see, inside and out. Cloisters were gigantic, and acoustics superb. Parking available nearby, and easy walking, even on the cobbles.

A beautiful Cathedral, very impressive architecture can compare with Notre-Dame. It is a free entrance, you are invited to contribute by the lighting if a candle. Well worth a visit.

Sooo huge. This building just keeps going. Easily comparable to Notre Dame. Without the queues.

    Impressive gothic architecture!

The cathedral lacked the uplifting colours from the stained glass windows that it is famed for on bright days, today was dull. The scaffolding around the outside also spoiled the view of the wonderful exterior. Still awesome, just not at its best.

Really impressive building in an attractive city. Well worth a visit. The surrounding area is also interesting. Take the mini train ride around the city centre. Well worth the money

Impressive from the outside but quite bland inside. Stained glass windows were quite impressive

I had wanted to visit ever since reading a book on cathedrals as a teenager. Suffice it to say paper did no justice whatsoever to the awe-inspiring reality of this masterwork of French Gothic. I spent the entire afternoon there and I could have spent a week. Stunning.

The most amazing cathedral I've seen in my life.

One of the most beautiful French Gothic cathedrals. The date when construction began is unknown, although a document of 1195 recording expenditure on rebuilding works suggests that construction was already underway by that date. Fantastic that Bourges Cathedral retains most of its original ambulatory glass, which dates from about 1215. They are really amazing. The astronomical clock of Bourges Cathedral is interesting as well. It was first installed in November 1424, during the reign of Charles VII, when the royal court was based in Bourges, for the occasion of the baptism of his son the Dauphin (the future Louis XI).

Bourges is a really great place to visit, steeped in history and lots to see. The cathedral is free to go in but you can pay to climb the 369 steps to the top of one of the towers and visit the crypt. We love a land train and the one here is no exception, great tour round the town and gives a narrated tour in your language.
