As a member of English Heritage, entrance here was free. There is ample car parking space as well. Staff here were all really lovely and kind, also very knowledgeable. My four kids, aged between 6 and 12, had a really good time, so much to see including a wonderful tour of the underground tunnel system. Lots of amazing history, great views and the main tower was very well kept. If you are a member of English Heritage, I would definitely recommend this place. My youngest was also studying about castle life at school and it really helped him understand castle life and he enjoyed telling his class about his trip. Big thumbs up to all the staff for being so helpful and kind.

A massive place, so allow I’d say half a day of not all of it to visit. Tunnels are fab and views from the top of the tower are great. Cafe serves half decent food but overpriced as always at these places. Picnic is probably a better option if there a few of you. Negative points for me is the bad signage and the lack of information boards to tell you what things are. Also the amount of distance you have to walk just to get to a toilet! Also the rudeness of some of the staff here is a disgrace! The woman in the shop next to the war tunnels has a bad attitude and would not show my daughter where the magnets were when asked! I wasn’t allowed in the shop due to not having my mask and she couldn’t even be polite about that! Also, if you’re going to enforce mask wearing then at least tell your staff to put their masks right over their face instead of just under their noses. One rule for all not just for us!! I’m not an anti masker, I forgot it. Other then the negatives, I would visit again and allow myself more time to explore.

Great visit. Lots to see from the Roman lighthouse, church, castle and tunnels. Tunnel tour was really interesting and everything was good. Guides were informative when you asked them questions. Nice little museum too. Good parking and toilets. Book online it saves you money.

Dive into history and the gorgeous sites here in Dover. There is ample parking and walkways that are nice if you are pushing a pram. My "big kid" really enjoyed the tunnel tour while my 9 & 16yr old enjoyed exploring the medieval castle and grounds. We spent easily 2.5hrs but could have spent longer here. If you are an English Heritage member, there is also a cottage on the castle grounds that you can rent. Prices are on the website.

Dover Castle was a fun one to tour around. As an English Heritage member, entry was free. The grounds are large and you can spend quite some time touring around. I loved how ornate the decor is and how the castle provided live details for us to visualize what it would be like if we were there in person. Definitely recommend.

This is simple one of the best Castle I've visited, vastly huge and impressive a full day is required. The war tunnels are a must the Dunkirk exhibition is truly emotional. The views from the top of the tower are spectacular. Car parking on site, has a couple of cafes / shops. The role this castle has played in our history is amazing

Very historic. In addition to the castle itself, you can walk around the grounds as well. To enter the castle grounds, you have to pay. If you just walk around outside, it is free. It has a good view of the sea.

What a fascinating place! I used my mobility walker and it was a bit of a challenge in some areas, but there is a courtesy disabled electric bus going constantly around the site which will pick you up and drop you off where you want to go. The staff are so friendly and helpful and very knowledgeable about the castle. The views over the Port of Dover are amazing. The Naafi Restaurant was nice although a bit pricey for a family to dine there. A meal of a small portion of macaroni cheese and a portion of garlic bread was priced about £9. I had a little bottle of juice and a bottle of spring water and it cost £5.75. I subsequently found that complimentary tap water is available. The staff were very helpful and friendly and there was an excellent disabled toilet with an adult hoist. Complimentary Mobility Scooters are also available on a first come first serve basis. If you need assistance to visit the castle, you can get a complimentary ticket with your adult ticket for your carer. We had a fantastic experience visiting and there is so much to see and do that to do it justice it would take another visit!

First time visiting the this castle with my family. The English Heritage staff are all so friendly and patient. (And thre are so many of them). There is more to see and do than we had time for. The tower is great, but remember it's only for those who love stairs.

One word Stunning! I know if you heard it but never came along here you will feel the same even if you’re British or not. From the very beginning with a tiny bridge it starts your special journey. Castle, chapel, view or war tunnels it’s truly stunning. Be careful about to spare enough time because it’s big enough and tunnel tours are not self made tour. If you’re an English heritage member it’s free entrance. If you’re not become one. PS. I would expect a better museum admission because of that many things would be more original or similar as it is not look like a toy specially inside the castle if it’s not main purpose of the design. In tunnels you don’t even see the video specially at the second part.

Dover Castle is an ideal place for a day visit especially if you include a good walk at White Cliffs of Dover. Tickets can be bought online or on site where you get a map. The staff is helpful and explain things if asked. Good place to take the kids or go with friends. There are 3 car parks next to each other, ticket office and toilets are in the middle car park. You drive inside the estate to get to the car parks. For food and drinks just head to the Naafi Restaurant... or benches with tables to eat outside. The place offers good views over the city, ferry harbour and the sea. The tour of ''Operation Dynamo : rescue from Dunkirk'' is worth trying. Dover has always played an important role in British history. The inside gives a nice view of how life was back in the days. Just walking up and down here makes for a good leg and lung exercise. Good idea is to take a hat with you, it can get windy. There are also events during the year worth checking out.

Positioned high above the town and harbour the castle offers fantastic views. There is plenty available to fill a days visit, climb the tower and visit the various rooms on the way to the top. There are war tunnels dug into the rock where imersiv video presentations explain the war. An old bunker looks out to sea with original sighting equipment.

Definitely you won’t be disappointed💫Well maintained.£15 entrance fee .This castle is so much to offer with great port view .The staffs were kind to help us move forward and look around all spots without missing.Amazed by the castle🏰 structures and compartments. You could live in medieval period for few hours roaming around which you tasted only in movies.Museum and Souvenir shop in the premises worth to visit. My favourite spot is castle kitchen which is like something I watched in the ‘ Brave’ animated movie. Hats off to English Heritage.

Absolutely loved my day at Dover Castle! The tower was my favourite with some amazing views at the top. The underground hospital tour was surprisingly entertaining, really well done, I felt I went back in time. I only regret the medieval Tunnels were closed to the public.

One of best castle to visit in England - wonderful kept and fully of history. The tunnels are great - but I recommend making them the first things you do as the queues can get rather long. Defiantly allow yourself a whole day there to see everything - we arrived when it opened and lefts just before closing and I'm still not sure if we saw everything. Loads of parking and great for kids.

A beautiful historic location with plenty to do and see for a whole day out. Suitable for families. Plenty of parking. Good visitor centre with information. A good restaurant with good choices of hot and cold food and drink. Very picturesque. Staff very friendly and informative. Wet particularly enjoyed the mini show with the king and his son in the main throne room.

Great place for kids. Castle itself is not wheelchair or pushchair friendly and there are lots of steps in the castle to get to rooms and top of the castle. They have got handrails. The rest of the grounds have paths. The tunnels are pushchair and wheelcahir friendly as long as your prepared to push them back up the hills. Had great story telling show for the kids in the castle. Stunning views from the tip of the castle. Staff super friendly.

I really enjoyed my visit to Dover castle the history was really interesting to learn about and everything was beautiful and well maintained. The staff were amazing they were helpful and informative. I would definitely recommend a visit if you haven’t been before. My only problem was that there was a few cars speeding around the grounds where pedestrians were walking close by

Really enjoyed our visit today. Lots to see and read about our history. Fantastic views of shipping in the channel and the ferry terminal. Three bean soup at lunchtime was very tasty and the tea cappocino and scone with jam and cream was delicious. Lots of steps or steep roads so allow plenty of time and energy to get round. The 20 min tour in the tunnels was very good, we did not have time to do the 60 minute tour so will have to return another time.

Such a beautiful Castle. Well worth the time to check out. Sitting on top of knoll in Kent, you can't miss it as it looks out over the Channel towards France. It is quite an Amazing structure. The custodians are quite knowledgeable and will answer any question . You get to walk through and see prayer areas, can sit on the throne, check out bedrooms and other working duties of the castle. Dining and sleeping quarters. Make your way to the roof for a spectacular view. They have some interactive history areas where you can listen and watch about the history of the Kings and much inter-family squabbling for power. We grabbed lunch at their restaurant, which was pretty tasty. Then we toured to more recent history of WWII. There is a hospital and secret tunnels that were used during the war. They run free tours about every 20 mins and worth going along. There is also history about Dunkirk that you can tour as well. Be prepared for walking up and down stairs and walkways. It's all built on a very large hill and there is plenty of walking, you will get a workout. The place is very well kept and pretty. Give yourself plenty of time, a couple of hours is not enough to take it all in.

If I could give Dover Castle six stars I would. English Heritage do a fantastic job maintaining and interpreting this site. We spent a whole day there and left wanting to see more. There is a lot more than just the Great Tower. The walk around the Keep is great. The Medieval Tunnel defences, Princess of Wales Regiment Museum, the exhibition of King Henry II, a great Cafe and Restaurant on site, WWII Tunnels, WWI Gun Control, Underground Hospital , and Saxon Church all set in beautifully cared for grounds. The guides are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Highly recommended. We are so fortunate to have seen this place.

Fantastic place, ample parking, very helpful and friendly staff throughout the experience. All are happy to answer any questions, share knowledge and guide you In the right direction. Gift shops on site, many toilets throughout and seating randomly placed. Be prepared for much walking, up and down steep slopes and staircases. There is so much to do and see you will be here most of the day If its your first visit. Visually a lovely place especially at the top of the castle and the command post.

A great castle with lots to see as it has amazing replicas of how things would've been. Make sure you have a good look around the grounds of the castle too as there are so many tunnels and interesting bits to discover. Bring your own picnic or grab a bite and drink in their cafe. The castle is worth a visit if you're in Dover. We travelled for a hike to the White Cliffs but ended up spending an entire day at castle. The well curated castle tours add to the charm of the visit. The place is full of history, mythology and great war stories. They have very nice restaurants/ cafes and extremely friendly staff. You won't be disappointed with the experience!

Such great history and stories in one site, feels like there's tight boundaries now in place - such as focusing on the second world war at the expense of Nepoleonic or older history. May be Covid related but feels like there could be more made of the extensive history.

Beautiful large castle with lots of grounds to walk around, a really interesting walk around the interior with halls to visit and a route up to the roof as well as fascinating wartime tunnels with a really fantastic tour and videos. I recently visited Dover Castle, managed by the National Trust in England, and it was an incredible experience. The highlight for me was the immersive journey into history at the war rooms, where you could almost feel the past come to life. The breathtaking views from the castle are simply awe-inspiring. The white cliffs of Dover, the English Channel, and the serene landscape create a picture-perfect setting that's not to be missed. However, I must mention that the parking situation was a bit inconvenient. Despite parking being available, we were directed to park outside the castle, which required at least a 20-minute walk, and this was quite challenging with young kids and a buggy. The gravelly and hilly path added to the difficulty. On the positive side, the history within the castle walls is incredibly rich, and the maintenance of the site is top-notch. The tickets were reasonably priced for the value you receive, making it accessible to a wide range of visitors. Be prepared for a lot of walking as exploring the castle and its surroundings can easily take 4 to 6 hours. I would highly recommend carrying water and snacks to keep energy levels up as you delve into this historic gem. Despite the parking hiccup, Dover Castle is a must-visit for history enthusiasts and those seeking stunning views of the English coastline.

Beautiful place perfect for a family dayout. The view from top is just spectacular. The castle, up and downhill walk around the garden is fun will keep everyone active all day. The staff are very kind and helpful. They will help you plan the route if you're not sure where to start or if it your first time. Overall, the visit was great. Children had fun all the time. The Castle is a must visit place.

If you are fit and able then this place is amazing! Whilst you can use notability vehicles to access many of the areas there are some that can only be accessed on foot IE the roof of the Great Tower. This place is huge & steeped in history throughout the ages. The Roman Lighthouse & medieval church are incredible! The War tunnels - A former hospital & the history of Operation Dynamo which is the evacuation of Dunkirk during May 1940. Check about disability access regarding these. I would say to allow yourself plenty of time here as there is so much to see. We spent almost 6 hours here & almost all on our feet walking! Poor points - sadly the cafe at the end of the Dynamo tunnel tour was closed as was the ice cream shop & they lost a load because today was sunny! Apart from that, if you are in the area then it is well worth a visit👍

  • 5/5 Ian B. 8 months ago on Google
Fabulous. Join English Heritage just to visit here. Pick a nice day to visit. Start at ‘the top’ and work your way down. We spent 6 hours here and could easily have spent more time exploring. Beware …..you need to be fit to walk up all the ramps and stairs ! The cafe’s are very clean. France doesn’t look so far away ! Watch the ferries in/out from the viewing platform.

  • 4/5 Steve A. 2 years ago on Google
The castle itself is very good. However, disability awareness is choose to zero. Any tours must be queued for, no alternate to that, wait in the queue for 15 to 30 minutes and no seats. Certainly got impressed by that. On the hospital tour I was at the back of the crowd with my stick. The guy shouted there was a very small lift for anyone who wants that but I felt very self aware at the back there so I didn't shout back. I hoped he'd be at the bottom of the stairs when I eventually got there but he'd gone up leaving me to have to use the stairs. Suffice to say it was extremely painful but I made it eventually. I was keen to use my EH membership for discounts for there was only one place to eat and, it didn't offer discounts. That made it much more expensive than I thought it'd be. The lady at the gate coming in was very helpful as were the guides around the tower. I'd expected it to be the only place to use my available energy but the hospital did that so, pain and exhausting. Well worth the trip, I will remember next time to make it clear to the guide before entering I'll need help. I also wish I'd known before leaving it in the car that I was able to use my scooter inside.

The Dover Castle has rich history and great views. Some places such as the underground tunnels have an extra fee but we did not know this when booking on the website to go to the castle. There’s plenty pf things to do and to see, lots of hiking, walking and plus it’s just perfect for a nice picnic or to learn some history about the castle and about Dover.

A wonderful place with two thousand years of history. Splendid views over the town and channel. It can be busy over summer weekends but there is plenty of outdoor space to absorb crowds. It can be expensive to visit as a "one off", so do consider joining English Heritage if you plan to visit other attractions managed by EH. You get a discount in the cafe also.

Fourth visit to this place in my lifetime, and it was this visit I took my kids for the first time, I can honestly say l have now explored the whole castle and grounds as we found stuff I have never seen before or explorered. Many great areas for picnics and snaps with views Great cafes and gift shops Lovely staff who will answer anything you want to know, even how many steps to the top of the castle ( I know my daughter asked this random one) If you are going with a few children, then I recommend you just invest in an english heritage membership as you will save money immediately and in the long run if you visit more historic sites If you're a member, you can just rock up, check in, and go I will be visiting again without a doubt

I now fully understand the "hype" about Heritage. So much so that immediately after my exhilarating excursion, I signed up and joined "English Heritage". Dover Castle was my first Heritage outing and definitely not my last! It's a magical place, steeped in History, cloaked in Towers and atmospheric underground Tunnels. Something for everyone. The NAAFI Cafe was well laid out and the food on offer was delish!

An amazing place to visit and one of England's top castles for sure. The castle complex is huge with the keep offering impressive views of the whole town of Dover and to the French coastline. Easily 3+ hours of things to see. One of the most impressive I found were the Roman lighthouse and medieval church which underline the significance of the site. Also has very interesting WW2 history with a fascinating tour of the tunnels in which the Dunkirk evacuation was planned.

Really lovely day out, lots to explore and so much to learn! The tunnels are fascinating and the guides are excellent. The only thing I'd say is that there needs to be more food options - we had scones and jam which were lovely but the food options were very limited especially those who have intolerance or allergies. Over all really lovely day and kind staff

We say every time we come off a ferry, that really ought to visit Dover Castle and finally we did! It was excellent. We spent over 4 hours there and were impressed by the recreated medieval interiors with their furniture, tapestries etc, the staff, the tour tunnels and the medieval tunnels. Really good day out but with lots of walking up and down steps and slopes, especially if you walk up from the town, like we did.

A stunning site to visit. Our main interest was the castle so didn't really explore all areas. Castle was lovely and some very informative guides inside the castle who were more than happy to share their knowledge. Plenty of on-site parking, cafe and restaurant on site as well as plenty of toilets.
