Glad we took the time to stop and visit this museum. My daughter is a real afficianado of Russian art and chose this for our family during our visit to Minneapolis. We weren't sure if we would like it as much, but it was great. The docents were very welcoming. What a shock to learn that it's the only museum of Russian art in North America. The museum shop was so filled with beautiful crafts, jewelry, textiles, art cards, prints, and soooo many books.

The exhibits at the time of our visit mainly focused on the communist era and transition afterwards. There were also biting satiric, anti-Putin cartoons. The support for Ukraine was obvious with large blue and yellow banner on the outside of the building and blue and yellow flowers in planter boxes. I expected more beautiful landscapes paintings, etc but what I absorbed most from the exhibits was the sense of repression of the Russian people. It was learning experience. There is a beautiful gift shop.

Well worth visiting. Especially if you’re concerned about all about Ukraine. The only museum dedicated to Russian art in the US. Nice gift shop. Guided tours. It’s built in a former church

A great museum for a short visit! The museum itself is pretty small maybe plan for an 45 minutes to an hour, not crowded. It's a good place to learn about Russian history. The nesting dolls were my favorite, they are so adorable. The gift shop is great, everyone was super kind and helpful.

Absolutely amazing place. The Museum is fantastic with a healthy selection of traditional and contemporary Russian Art you can easily spend a few hours browsing their rotating collection. We recently held our wedding at the Museum and we could not be happier. The space is great for a moderately sized wedding, guests can browse the art while arriving and the paintings add a fantastic atmosphere to your ceremony. Michelle is great at making the ceremony run smoothly and the process could not have been more painless. I would definitely recommend this place as a venue weddings as well as a visit to view the art.

Beautiful and moving art. Venue was the perfect size, allowing you to fully enjoy each piece without having to rush through to see everything. Can't believe it took us this long to go. Also very COVID safe, lots of social distancing and tons of open space.

A very nice little museum on the south side of Minneapolis. There are several great pieces of art to observe. The building is a beautiful old church that is clean and has been kept up very well. The view from the balcony is lovely. There is a neat giftshop with fun and different items to purchase. The museum is very handicap friendly with lifts, ramps, and an elevator. Students, military, and seniors also get reduced price admission.

It was interesting, but not what we expected. I was expecting Russian art and what I got was regular art from Russian artists. While the top floor was cool and informative, it was about an American's experience in Russia, so really not what we had hoped to see. The gift shop, however, did not disappoint!

This museum was a lovely surprise. I really enjoyed the diversity of the art displayed. The contemporary sections welcoming political work, makes this Museum a relevant place to visit in this historic time of global conflict. The bathrooms were clean and accessible, the gift shop super cute, and staff pleasant. They were participating in a national free Museum day. I saw more folks of color than I had expected to run into. I don’t know if I would have given it a try had it not been for that opportunity. I would come back and pay.

One of the best art museums I've visited in the state. The staff here is absolutely amazing, the building is beautiful, available accomodations make it very accessible, wonderful gift shop, and the exhibitions are extremely interesting. This museum has exposed me to so much interesting works of art. Wide selection of vintage books in Russian for a cheap price too. Sarah in the gift shop is absolutely wonderful and incredibly knowledgeable and helpful.

This is my favorite at museum. There are three floors of exhibits with a basement level, first floor, and an upper loft area. We enjoy looking at the lower level art from the upper loft area. This gives a new perspective of the art. Additionally, there is a small room off the first floor for smaller exhibits. This is a small museum that you can enjoy in a short period of time. The exhibits rotate often including paintings, sculpture and textiles. There is a strong cultural component to the museum. This is a museum to not miss and to return to regularly.

Friendly knowledgeable staff. From Contemporary to the 1920s artwork. It was interesting to see leaders depicted that I grew up knowing of in almost life like paintings. Also sweet to see people of everyday life, enjoying life.

This place is an absolute gem. It's small but has a nice variety, with a moderate price. First of all, the parking: there is no lot immediately adjacent to the museum. There is some parking along the street, including along what is a frontage road for the highway, but museum visitors can also park in the church lot across the street. We had no line upon entry and the place was fairly empty on a January at midday. The lady at the counter was enthusiastic and friendly as she told us about what was on each floor of the museum. We began wandering on the main floor, through an exhibit of winter traditions in Russia, and continued from there. I especially loved some of their permanent pieces like the Milkmaids (no photograph can do it justice). The museum is forthright about their support of Ukraine, which I much appreciated, and even had an exhibit of pro-Ukraine artwork. A lot of reviews mention the gift shop, as well they should. It's a charming place. Expensive, yes, but the stuff tends to be higher quality and/or unique. They had a lot of imported foods I hadn't seen before. I bought a pottery take on Baba Yaga's chicken-footed house, which I absolutely adore. This is definitely a place I'd visit again as exhibits change, and it'd be great to bring company here from out of town (I should note that the museum is not far away from MSP airport).

A big assortment of Russian historical pieces. Reception was nice. Toilets are clean. Whole place is well taken care of.

  • 3/5 Trevor J. 4 years ago on Google
The presentation is well done. Something I didn't know upon my first visit is that the collection consists of rotating portfolios of a limited number of artists. This week the upper floor was divided between two artists and the lower level was all one artist. The feature gallery today was a USSR propaganda poster exhibit. I found the display to be lacking in commentary about the destructiveness of the communist ideology.

  • 4/5 Montse A. 4 years ago on Google
Visiting this museum on 3/8 was a great learning experience on USSR propaganda, Russian folk dance, and several Russian artists. I'm knocking off one start because the gift shop attendant wasn't very knowledgeable nor friendly, and there were workshop tables with unfinished paintings cluttering the main area.

I was pleasantly surprised by this place. They have some great soviet posters that date back to the early revolution all the way till the fall of the soviet union. Very interesting to see the shift of style and message. They also have a chernobyl exhibit at the moment that is fascinating. Highly recommended

The Russian Museum of Art is always a wonderful experience that never disappoints. The works of art are no less than stunning. They are always well documented with history and information. They regularly change the exhibits so there is always something new to see. Groupon regularly has a coupon for this place so go and enjoy yourself.

This was fascinating in terms of the history learned from the propoganda posters exhibit, and because of the regularly changing exhibits on the other 2 floors. I loved the exhibit we saw on the bottom floor, just beautiful. The best part was the free tour we received; our guide was extremely knowledgeable!

We have visited here several times and enjoyed every visit. This time we participated in a docent led visit. It was excellent. We particularly enjoyed the exhibits of the Russian Posters, the Chernobyl nuclear disaster photos, and the art on loan from the Hill Monastic Library at St. john's University.

Loved it! I really wanted to see the Holiday display but I couldn't make it work. The Chernobyl photos are intense. The Soviet posters are amazing. It was fun to use Google Translate and the camera to translate the Russian. A smaller place with 3 floors right off 35 and Diamond Lake road. Staff was friendly. Free on-street parking. I'd definitely go back!

This place is a hidden gem of a museum. I've driven past it hundreds of times and never thought about it until one evening when I thought of dropping by. The propaganda posters are amazing. You can easily see the mindset of Russia sitting the Cold War era. Down stairs is the old Russia of the tzar's. They have some amazing pieces that were presents to them, or from them. Wonderful craftsmanship. I was told that the displays change several times a year, which will bring me back in a few months to see what's there. Go check it out and support your local museums!

So today was my birthday and I wanted to spend it in a very special way and learn and see things not many people my age do and see. My girl and I went to the Russian Museum and it was spectacular in so many ways. The Art is magnificent, the description of the art and knowledge of person's, views and how It relates to the SSR, Communists views and the hardships people had to endure and over come. Hats off to the people who made this little magical creation. I strongly recommend people to visit this museum and learn from the history from the people. And hopefully Travel to Russia to see the real thing. Thanks to all the staff and people who made this what it is.

A small unexpected gallery in Minnesota. I'm not sure why it features Russian art, but it was definitely a pleasant surprise. It's also interesting to see a country's history through art, and with Russian art you can really see the change. The gift shop also feels like a collection of art work. I recommend a visit.

Great way to spend a couple hours on a Saturday afternoon. The museum isn’t very large, but I found their collections to be well curated with a variety of different styles from Russian artists, many of which I had not heard of. I also appreciated their display in support of Ukraine that showcased pieces from various Russian and Ukrainian cartoonists.

This was the first time I went to this museum. It's a small museum that was done very well. The Spanish Mission style is unusual for Minnesota. There is interesting artwork on every floor (two floors and a basement). I was originally hesitant to go there because of the senseless war against Ukraine, but this establishment fully supports Ukraine. They even had some artwork from artists that experienced the war and were able to get away. It was worth the visit.

Loved the gift shop. Their limited christmas display was interesting. I was hoping for more to see. Most of the art of religious and political propaganda which was still beautiful and interesting but didn’t impress me much. The lighting also made many of the descriptions hard to read. Overall, I wish there was more to see. Nothing impressed me except the gift shop which includes many handmade gifts and Eastern European cultural goods.
