This ancient citadel is located in Rupea, on the Brasov route to Sighisoara. It is worth stopping the car for a moment to contemplate the construction because from the road it already attracts attention. The truth is that the interior has little to see, walls that show that they have been restored, open towers without any exposure inside giving a feeling of desolation (besides that we were alone). Very good views of the area, that is true. They have recently raised the access fee from RON 10 to RON 15 (about € 3 to change). Free parking (today). Whether or not it is worth entering depends on your timming and your passion for these constructions, personally it was a bittersweet experience, probably I would not paid now that I know what it is.

Positives: Reconstruction is ready, the castle is really nice. Long opening time, huge free parking place, not expensive tickets, gifts, it has toilet before the castle, you can use it free. Kind and helpful staff. Information table everywhere, you can find what you need :) Amazing view to the castle and from the castle too. We are totally satisfied with everything. Negatives: Don't have negatives :) We suggest to visit this really nice castle.

The view is simply amazing! I recommend going there for the view alone. I also like the fact that there is an app that's telling the story of the citadel. The only thing I disliked is the fact that all the rooms were empty :( . From my perspective some old furniture/costumes could be placed inside just not to look so... empty!

Beautiful place! The entrance fee is about 10 EUR for a family with 2 children. You can get a coffee, a drink or a hot dog at the entrance for a reasonable price. If you climb to the top, you'll get a beautiful panorama.

I visited the Citadel during a cold and snowy winter day and although the stairs were slippery at times, it well deserves a visit. There was also two different exhibitions inside it, as you can see in the photos. The entrance was 14 lei and the view from the top was very nice.

Its a beautiful medieval citadel that has a lot of its initial structures still in place. Be careful as its a place filled with lots of energy and it can be hard at times for sensitives

This fortress is a must stop for lovers of antiquities who are in the area. It is a good rest stop if you are traveling from Cluj to the Brasov area. Parking is spacious and accessible. Be prepared for a fair amount of walking as this fortress is quite large. They did a great job posting information plaques on the various parts of the structure. There was art on display in some of the rooms. The foundations of this cetatea go way back, it is neat as you work your way in a spiral from the “newer” sections into the heart/top of the the structure has roots to older part. The view at the top is lovely. A very peaceful place to enjoy. You’ll definitely need to hold your small child’s hand for parts as the stairs/paths can be a little rough. A baby carrier/wrap is recommended if you plan to take a very young child as a stroller is impractical.

Beautiful fortress on a hill from where you can see the entire surrounding. Most if it was rebuilt in the past years.

Loved this place because there was no one else when we were there early in the morning. That said, there's not much to see except rocks. Great for photo ops.

Worth visiting if you're driving by! There is a toilet and a souvenir shop. If the weather allows it's a nice place to have a coffee break (just that you need to bring your own coffee) :)

Great example of medieval architecture. Romania is rich in such examples.

Good but not great. They have infotainment systems that are left unused for many years. The rooms are nicely rebuilt but no furniture or anything interesting to see inside the towers. Only the room on top has a table. Other than that, the view is great and those rooms are cool

Very interesting place, it have a lot of buildings reconstructed and gives you a better understanding of how those people lived there, there are towers reconstructed, houses. At night, you can see the citadel very imposing. There are many lights pointing toward it and the resulting image is awesome.

The castle is very renovated, you can hardly see the “old” in it. Except an art exhibition in 2 of the rooms, the rest were mainly empty. Was hard to acknowledge that one place was once upon a time a chapel. They can do better.

The fortress is on top of the city, on the top of the hill. The acces is easy and there are indicators so you can get there easy. The terrain inside can be difficult in some areas so you should pe prepared for some exercise. The view is beautiful.

Lovely to walk around the citadel. Interesting to read the little boards giving more information. Exquisite view from the top over looking the valley and village.

It was a pleasant surprise to find this place on the way from Brasov to Sigisoara. You can see it far from the highway. It's worth a visit. It's nicely restored and has a nice view of the valley around.

Another hill top castle. Not especially interesting and quite small. 2 car parks with the usual selection of tourist coaches. We were able to stay in the lower carpark in our motorhome with the permission of the security guard. Not sure it’s worth going far out the way to see

Nice citadel. The best was the view above Rupea city ❤️

  • 5/5 Mike G. 1 year ago on Google
Worth a visit as it was a stronghold with a 100 houses within. Narrow streets and lots of steps. Bring a torch as there are some rooms unlit.

Derelict fort with a vast treasure trove of history. The fort and the facilities are well explained and maintained. The views from the top are spectacular.

  • 4/5 Jarrod H. 8 months ago on Google
Really enjoyed it. Would have been an impressive site in it's heyday. It's only a cheap entry free so can't really complain, but they could do with putting a few artifacts in the rooms, literally 90% of the rooms are dead empty. Definitely worth a visit though, impressive views all around and a nice fortress to explore

  • 5/5 Hem R. 8 months ago on Google
Beautiful! The drive up to the different archeological sites in the area is delightful. The place is big and has plenty of still standing buildings to go inside and explore.

  • 3/5 George (. 8 months ago on Google
Nice place, with lots of history. Would be nice if you could aquire the audioguide from the ticketing office, to have a guided tour, but unfortunately you can only buy one online, if the signal allows it, after you download a specific app.

Every time I visit the fortress, I absolutely love it. It has undergone renovations and now has such an incredible atmosphere. The views from up there are breathtaking. I genuinely adore it and highly recommend paying it a visit. Plus, it's quite affordable to enter, only 15 lei.

  • 5/5 alexandra c. 8 months ago on Google
Interesting experience, beautiful place to visit. There are 2 parking lots and a toilet avaliable. Tickets are 15 lei (3 euro).

  • 5/5 Gabriel B. 7 months ago on Google
Sure, the images might be redundant and the citadel underwhelming and empty, but it's a part of history that survived despite the constant attempts of destroying it. it's a must see if you're near it, but otherwise wouldn't say you miss out if you don't plan your trip around it

When we visited it was starting to rain and it was still beautiful with great views of the countryside! Wear comfortable shoes and watch the weather. Thankfully we had shoes that were good in the rain but it would have been nice to have rain boots!

I'd say, the best castle in Romania, better than bran castle. Its been rebuilt and well preserved. It has lots of buildings to look at and go inside. 3 tiers with fortified walls, great panoramic views. Well worth a visit if you are in the area, even worth travelling to if you are far away. (There's plenty of other places to look at in the area, fortified churches, ropetower etc) 15lei (under £3) to look around. Dog friendly. Looks beautiful at night too when all lit up!

  • 5/5 Silver 6 months ago on Google
One of the most beautiful citadels in the area besides Sighisoara. Absolutely gorgeous views along with the standing buildings. Highly recommended and a must see.

Rupea Citadel in Romania is an absolute gem! Visiting this historical site was a truly enriching experience. The moment I set foot within its ancient walls, I was transported back in time. The breathtaking views from the citadel are nothing short of spectacular, offering a panoramic vista of the surrounding countryside. The well-preserved architecture and intriguing exhibits provide fascinating insights into Romania's rich heritage. The atmosphere is both peaceful and captivating, making it a perfect destination for history enthusiasts and travelers alike. Rupea Citadel is a must-visit destination, a testament to Romania's glorious past, and an unforgettable journey through time.

Rupea Citadel is a good place to visit, it was renovated. The road is paved and goes up to the entrance. There are parking spaces in the parking lot right at the entrance of the citadel.

Wonderful citadel to visit, however it is not advertised ok. Great views from the top. Good for a one time visit. There is a free parking lot in front, one poorly maintained bathroom and a gift shop.

View is cool, history might also be interesting, but most of the things has been built up from zero and they don't even look aged. Just some empty houses with electric plugs and name tags from kids.

  • 5/5 Bogdan G. 2 years ago on Google
Interesting Citadel. Lots of history and a background. If you like history then you must come to vitis this one. You can imagine how the life was 500 years ago on the top of a cliff walking through the walls on small "streets"

  • 4/5 Gergő K. 2 years ago on Google
A really wonderful sight to see, that I can only recommend. However the lack of informational boards about the citadel is the reason I'd rate it only 4 stars. There were some, but not enough for such a breathtaking sight, where people are interested in finding out more about a histrical location.

Rupea Fortress stands tall and proud on a peak of a hill. I liked the renovation they have made to it as they did not take away much of it's old aspect. I do not recommend this place for people in wheelchair as you cannot see it completely and the roads inside are quite steep. The fortress has a lot of benches where you may rest or sit and admire the architecture and the views. There are 2 pasking lots outside of the fortress. The ticket costs 15 ron/adult. There is also a small shop where you could buy refreshments, ice cream or hot dogs.

Nicely renovated medieval castle with several inner courtyards. Beautiful view of the surrounding scenic hills.

  • 4/5 Beatrice G. 1 year ago on Google
Very well preserved, worth a visit. Would have liked to see something inside the rooms, most of them are empty. Some clothes, coins, weapons, tools, even if they are replica of items of those times.

    Nice fortress, clean. Nice scenery.

  • 4/5 Cristi 3 years ago on Google
Great location for this fortress as it offers a panoramic view of surroundings. It has 3 defense lines and it has been nicely restored as you can even visit some of the houses there. I wish more interactive exhibits were available and more things to talk about the history of the place beyond the impersonal tone that states a wall was constructed and then extended. 15 lei, a bit too much in Romania for a visit.

  • 3/5 Cristian A. 1 year ago on Google
It'a a beautiful fortress but not very well organised. When you enter you have no ideea which way to go, and the information panels are very small. The alleys are not very well mainntained and there is a chance to slip on the weathered rocks (I understand that it was built in the 1400s but I've seen better trails on a mountain). The audioguide is one continuous story, with no chapters. Overall, a rather displeasing experience that was only made better by the views you have fron the top.

  • 4/5 Stella H. 9 months ago on Google
Fantastic views at the higher levels. Not much exhibits on display. Grounds well kept.

  • 5/5 Alexandra N. 1 year ago on Google
A beautiful place to visit. Well maintained, clean, and organized. You can see how the old walls were built, you can download the app where it tells you what's written on the placards everywhere. Just to be safe, if you go there on a sunny day, be prepared with a hat and a bottle of water (you can buy water/other drinks outside of the castle before buying the tichet).

Interesting and great views but nothing in rooms, no exhibits.

  • 4/5 Adriana C. 1 year ago on Google
It's a good sightseeing stop. It's been restored recently so it's really nice to visit and read the info signs. It's not really recommended for wheelchairs or strollers since the stone walkway is pretty steep and uneven, but kids will love runnig around hiding in the corners of the dwellings. There are 2 parking lots, toilets, souvenir shop and a small cafe right next to the entrance.

  • 5/5 David F. 1 year ago on Google
Great place to stop and sight see just a few minutes off the highway. You can see everything in about 30 minutes, but it's nice and very scenic.

While driving from Brasov to Sighisoara, you will pass by the Rupea Citadel, which stands imposingly on the top of the Cohalmul hill, dominating the city of Rupea from above. Its image really takes your breath away as you can see in the photos attached. The medieval fortress can be visited for 15 RON (3 EUR) per person. To be noted that there’s also a parking lot where you can leave your car for free.

  • 5/5 Costin B. 1 year ago on Google
It is an attraction worth visiting if you are in the area. I really enjoyed the mediaeval vibe, and also the view once we reached the upper part of the citadel. I think it takes only about 30 minutes to visit the place since there are not a lot of buildings or inscriptions inside, but the ticket is only 15 RON.

  • 5/5 Tomas F. 9 months ago on Google
Very nice castle, great views. A lot of parking spaces, if you go by it is good place to rest and buy something for drink.
