A wonderful petite village with a gorgeous fortified church in the middle of it. A nice hidden gem that, in my opnion, should have more awareness. A place that was very quiet and seemed quite empty when we visited but with a pitresque view. In the fortified garden of the church, you can admire the city from above and admire the interesting hills that surrounds it.

(Translated by Google) "Everywhere I go my money goes" is the slogan when you step on the land of religious history, be it monasteries or fortified churches, you have to pay. Just like on the roads, the money doesn't come from maintenance. I do not claim to build new churches but at least to maintain them. Biertan is beautiful inside, very different from an Orthodox church, but in a pleasant way. I like it, it's something different from our classics full of paintings. In some places it can be seen that he could use his hand to preserve this place. He climbs some stairs that remind me of the stairs in the fortress of Sighisoara. They are shorter but more beautiful. A lot of inscriptions in German, then you start to see all that Saxon concept. Once in a lifetime you have to get to see her. By the way, the entrance is 10 lei as well as the magnets, a bit expensive compared to other places and the same quality. EDIT: I didn't realize what fortified churches mean, but over time I realized that Biertan is probably the best-maintained church of its kind.

This is a unexpected treasure that one need to just go and see. It's an old fortification similar to Sighișoara and Black Church from Brasov. The host there was too modest about the place, because it has visitors, but not so many like other churches. Go visit, it's practically a museum in itself.

Beautiful fortification, worth the visit! You visit mainly the building (church, towers and walls), there are no exhibitions inside. It opens every day 10am to 13pm and 14pm to 17pm. Costs 15 Lei/ Adult.

Was an amazing scenic drive through rural Romania to get there. Was like going back in time apart from the modern cars parked in front of the houses. In my opinion a must see drive, place to visit, Hardly any tourists there either.

Biertan is one of the most beautiful and interesting fortified churches in Romania and if you have planned to take a tour of them through Transylvania, this should not be missed.

I'd say you can skip the inside, there is not much if anything to see. From outside it looks great. There are two good viewpoints. For one, take the road leading west from the square. At the end there is a little door between fences, marked with a tourist sign, go through it and a bit up. The second one and best one, you go a bit north from the square and find a pink-ish house with a big entrance. You enter (it might be private but there was nobody), go up and right to a small path above the building.

Nice to see! This old fortified church offers you a interesting feeling of the old times. Inside the site you can read stories about the old life style and also some facts from the Second World War. The location is also spectacular for its views. The church itself has an old aspect and Is not renovated.

This impressive fortified church was built in the 14th century. It is very well preserved with some of its original paintings. If you're in the area you should visit this historical monument.

An interesting place but not very popular. At the entrance you will find 2 restaurants (I didn't eat there) and some souvenir stalls. The ticket costs 15 RON / adult. The tour lasts about 1 hour. Inside the church you can see interesting things and there is an information point where you can ask questions. It is a clean and tidy place. Please note that parking is paid even on Sundays.

Kept its authenticity by a non interventional policy, due to an ever lasting lack of funding, thus preserving a lot from the old times. However, this is approach could turn risky as some of the buildings might collapse. The careless aspect could have been improved by at least cutting some vegetation that climbs the external walls, as some of their roots are enlarging the cracks in the walls.

It's a great place to visit when you are in Sibiu County. The fortified church has several towers which unfortunately you can't visit because they are under renovating measures, but the church itself, the church history and the surrounding areas are worth a little of your time.

(Translated by Google) The church is very beautiful, we felt good even though it was a bad October day outside. I gave 4 stars because no one answers the phone and in addition on google the program is wrong. It's not until 15. We arrived at 12.45 and the lady from the cashier told us to hurry because at 13 the church closes. I put the correct program that was in October and on google I hope it will make the change. It's 10-13 and 14-17. However, even if it is closed, you can see the church from the outside and it is worth taking a trip there (Original) Biserica este foarte frumoasa, ne-am simtit bine desi afara era o zi urata de octombrie. Este 10-13 si 14-17. Oricum chiar daca e inchis, se poate vedea de afara biserica si merita sa faceti un drum pana acolo

The UNESCO listed Fortified Church of Biertan was built in late Gothic style by the Transylvanian Saxons in 1522 (they think construction began somewhere around 1500). It was originally Catholic but with the Reformation became Lutheran. There are old flags of the guilds hanging in the Church marking where they sat. Oriental rugs donated by merchants returning from the East also decorate the interior. There are 8 towers. Catholics were allowed to erect one of the towers showing tolerance. Another tower contains the Divorce "Prison". Two weeks before an intended divorce the pair were locked up together in a small room with one spoon (but no knife), one plate and one chair. There was only one small bed with one pillow, too. Almost always the couple were dissuaded from divorcing. In over 300 years only one couple got divorced. The Church's Sacristy has a thick oak door with an elaborate lock to safeguard the valuables. This 19 point dead bolt lock was made in 1515. It won an award in 1889 at the Paris World Exhibition.

Loved it. Similar to other fortified churches, but different. It’s disappointing that you cannot climb any of the many towers - on the other hand it’s awesome that the thing is open at all. The shape of the castle is rather poor but that’s what adding the magic - it’s like junkyard full of hidden treasures, and rare renaissance works of art covered with dust and cobwebs.

Another splendid fortified church in the heart of Romania. It is a shame that the towers are closed and you cannot go to the top of them to the see village and landscape, because of the poor condition they are. However walking around the walls in the village is a very nice experience. Also the church itself inside the walls is beautiful

The Biertan Fortified Church is a Lutheran fortified church and feels frozen in time. The UNESCO world heritage site and historic monument is quite impressive and good preserved. What impressed me most were the 19 different locking mechanisms and the museum “the reconciliation chamber”- a sort of “special therapy” offered by the church to the couples who intended to divorce; the couple was locked by the local bishop in the small room, with only one bed, one plate, one spoon, one fork, one pillow for up to six weeks in the hope that they would iron out their problems and avert a divorce. It may sound like a nightmare, but this marital prison was rather effective as in 300 years there has only been one divorce. What I don’t like is the emptiness around it. From one side it’s impressive to see how resident’s lives continue to move at a slow, meditative pace. From the other, is sad that Romania has no idea of how to do tourism, but this is another story…

The Biertan fortified church, a Lutheran fortified church in Biertan- Sibiu County, in the Transylvania region of Romania, built by the ethnic German Transylvanian Saxon community, part of the villages with fortified churches in Transylvania UNESCO World Heritage Site, has a central system that blocks the door in 19 points, built around 1515 by master Johannes Reichmuth from Sighişoara, which ensured the safety of the valuables kept in the sacristy. It sets the world record for being the World's Most Complicated Church Lock. The church has three rows of exterior fortifications linked by gate towers, nine in total. The grounds contain a "matrimonial prison" where couples wishing to divorce were confined so they could be sure they wished to end their marriage. The lockup lasted for two weeks, although the pair could leave early if they reconciled. They had to share a single bed, plate and spoon. During the three centuries that bishops resided at Biertan, just one couple ended up divorcing. In 1993, Biertan and its fortified church were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was joined by six other places in 1999 to form the villages with fortified churches in Transylvania site.

Another of the "musts", and part of the UNESCO churches. Specially impressive from the outside, inside is underwhelming - but worth it for a few things such as the amazing lock, or the covered stairways. Do not miss Copsa Mare, just beside Biertan and really low key but amazing

Last year we started a tour of the fortified churches from Transilvania, and unfortunately we were not able to visit Biertan at that time ,but we got here this year . Overall the place looks ok but not so good compared with the other churches we saw in the Brașov area. It's worth visiting it only if you are in the area as Biertan is only 8km away from the main road, and these last kilometres are in good shape.

Fortified church in the countryside, much more bland compared to Viscri citadel for example. Not very well explained and most of the structures and buildings were close to the public so that only church and garden were available to visit. All considered nothing special, to stop only if you are on the way.

Romantically situated old fortified church. One has the feeling that time has stood still for 600 years in this place. The entire region is German. The German influences are omnipresent. Unbelievable. The fortified church in Biertan is beautiful and super interesting. The door of the treasury is unique in the world and was at the world exhibition in Paris. Full recommendation!

Saxons were clever to build the fortified churches on the hills,to be able to observe the territory and prepare to meet the strangers. This church is interesting both due to its architectural peculiarities and cultural values. Even one lock is unique, with 19 special mechanisms of protection. Partly not restored, the territory allows to see 3/4 of the fortification.Still--interesting, with numerous stories to be told --that is the church. Come there and admire it!

Beautiful fortified church on the hill. There are some really old priest coffins that are carved frome stone portraying the burryed priests. There is a 10lei entry fee and unfortunately there is no discount for students. The toilets are clean but be very careful about the PARKING. You have to pay for the parking right next to the church and the parking is administered by the local city hall but there is no number to call to if tou have a problem. The parking machine does not give change back and in case you want to pay for two cars in one payout that is not possible. Also if you insert the money and you cancel the transaction you won't get the money back, you just loose the money and you get a ticket saying you should contact the administration but there is no number anywhere witch you can call and also no place to go to speak with the administration. When asking the locals for help they said i shouldn't have payed the parking at all because no one checks for the tickets.
