What a special place looking after these beautiful gentle creatures. Some are still a little skittish but most just want to come and say high. The host did mention that it was close to feeding time when we arrived but I want to believe that they don’t see us all as the cruel people they were rescued from. Great to see that young and old have a forever home with caring staff. Check out their website to see how you can help.

We stayed in McGregor for a week and was recommended by our host to pay a visit to Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary which is only a few minutes drive from town. The Sanctuary has a lovely little walk with an information guide / map, a coffee shop (amazing cheesecake!), book shop and retail store and the highlight of the visit: a guided walk with a knowledgeable carer in the paddocks with the donkeys. All the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. There was no charge for the tour, so it's advisable to leave a donation.

Absolutely incredible place to visit. The staff are friendly and helpful and spending time interacting with the donkies (under the watchful eye of a staff member) is a great way to spend some time. The coffee shop has some tasty treats to round out the visit.

It was a wonderful experience. Had a breakfast to start of the day with them. Decent food for the price. Then we went to go meet the donkeys. A tour guide walks with you through the donkeys and tells you a bit of each donkey's history along with facts. Was very interesting. Can see they take good care of the donkeys.

Beautiful place, love what they do for the donkeys. The book store has a good collection, the strawberry muffins were delish. Wish they would do something about the horseflies which put us off from visiting a second day.

What a great experience. The sanctuary really take good care of these donkeys. Our guide was friendly and the tour very informative. Enjoyed a coffee & muffin afterwards 👌🏼. They ask no fee for a visit, instead give you the option of a donation which really goes towards a great cause. Definitely recommended.

Had an awesome tour around the Donkey sanctuary. Our guide was very helpful and gave us lots of information about the different donkeys. He knew all their history and showed us how to pet their ears. Will definitely be back soon!

What a lovely place this is. You can see how much they care for these lovable creatures that were once unloved and abused. They are now in a place where they can experience love and respect. They get fed well, and you can see by the condition of how clean their drinking water is, that they are well looked after.

What a lovely place. Unfortunately it was raining when we were there so the donkeys weren't keen to come out in the wet but the staff were so friendly and centre manager (I think his name was Leonard) was just a wealth of information and a great person to chat with. The food was also amazing and well priced.

This place gets a 5 star from me for being a good host and caring for these beautiful animals. This must be called Donkey Heaven instead. They are so well fed and all in a good condition. The grounds are well kept and you can enjoy a lovely lunch with grape juice , while supporting their book shop. A worthy place to send your unwanted books as well. It's for a good cause.

I am so glad we visited Eseltjiesrus. The work they do there is truly heartwarming and the donkeys are beyond cute. It's a must-visit for anyone passing through Robertson. It's free to go and see the donkeys, pet them, and learn all about them from the very friendly and insightful guide.

Me and my twinsister visited this special place during our stay in McGregor and loved it so much. We were allowed to visit the donkeys with a guide and could ask all our questions about them and the sanctuary! Definitely want to return!
