A very important and necessary facility on river Thames to control the flow and provide safe transit of river traffic to negotiate difference in river water level as it flows via through Reading on its way towards London.

Nice dam and lock system on the Thames River. A good place to watch boats come and go but there is not much else to do here.

What an amazing lock and lots of history. Did you know that’s it connected to an island? Did you know that it’s connected to an archimedes screw? Did you know that there’s an open air swimming pool and amazing restaurant next door? You really should take a look esp at the art on the screw! Also, you can see a rare eel run nearby on the View Island path, the famous vintage wooden head sculpture as well as a derelict tennis court. Oh and yes, the best blackberries in Berkshire!

On a good day it's a nice place to walk alongside the river with some seating and you can watch the boats going by.

Took grandson to see lock working. Lockeeper was great, let Charlie operate the gates and was very nice.

A delightful spot on the Thames in Reading. On a sunny Sunday, there are regular movements through the lock either under the watchful eye of the lock-keeper, or self-service during his break. On the north side parallel with the lock is a wide weir where the force of the water contrasts with the calmness of the lock. There is a waterside meadow on the south side when one can rest, play, picnic, etc.

It was quite interesting to see the water level dropped and the opening of the gates for boats to pass through.
