The
house
and
gardens
are
well
preserved
and
scenic,
however
we
were
shocked
that
there
was
NO
MENTION
OF
SLAVERY
during
the
official
tour,
no
knowledge
of
how
many
slaves
lived
and
worked
at
the
plantation
and
no
meaningful
depiction
whatsoever
of
any
artefacts
or
quarters
used
by
slaves
throughout
the
museum.
Despite
extensive
restorations
in
2018
and
annual
renovations
since
then,
the
house
only
showcases
history
and
information
about
the
lives
of
the
former
plantation
owners
and
their
families
in
any
level
of
detail.
The
1816
slave
rebellion
which
caused
extensive
damage
to
the
house
was
not
mentioned
at
all
although
a
later
fire
in
1995
was
mentioned
as
a
cause
for
some
restorations.
Also
worth
noting
that
unlike
some
other
cultural
and
historical
sites
that
have
made
visits
free
for
locals,
Barbadians
still
have
to
pay
to
visit
albeit
at
a
reduced
rate.
One
of
our
party
raised
these
issues
with
the
manager
and
it
appears
these
are
regular
complaints
from
visitors
however
the
only
response
is
that
the
current
owners
have
recently
asked
someone
to
look
into
this
“aspect”
of
the
history
of
the
house
and
more
evidence
needs
to
be
collected.
I
am
only
giving
one
star
because
our
guide
was
excellent
and
very
knowledgeable
and
most
of
the
staff
very
kind
and
helpful.
