It dosen't look like a real museum first but an Opal shop. You need to get in the shop and then you will be led to an Informative place. There are two lovely people helping you with your questions. There is a 7 minutes movie about Opal as well that you can watch it while sitting on the comfortable coach. After taking the tour, now it's time to try it with 3D glassess to see the differences. It's amazing and fun. The shop dosent have a big collection of Opals but fortunately I could find what I was looking for.

If you're a fan of opals, look no further. Geoff is a man who lives and breathes opals and has a genuine passion for what he does that is sorely lacking in a lot industries these days. The museum itself is a treasure and educational and the store has so many precious stones of all price ranges so everyone can afford something. We have purchased 6 opals off him in the last year and it pains my wallet to say we'll be purchasing a lot more in the future. Do yourself a favour and check it out.

Couldn’t recommend this place enough! My partner and I drove past and saw the sign so decided to stop in. We were shown around by a lovely Asian lady who knew her stuff - history of Australia going back 100-200 million years! The tour of the place was free and we got to touch all of the different types of opals (some with very interesting stories behind them). When leaving, we were given a small booklet called “Geoff’s story” - I must say, Geoff - you should be INCREDIBLY proud of what you have achieved, and the staff you have working for you. If you are in Brisbane and love opals - please stop on by and support this amazing place. I must have said “wow” dozens of times and I’m sure you will too. HIGHLY ADVISED - 5* x2 P.s. also got a free pen which is now my favourite

What a wonderful experience we had when we went here! All the staff were super nice and helpful! The museum is awesome, lots of rocks to see and the details/info of each rocks & stones are very good. We ended up spending a lot of time at the store in the end as well. The staff were very accommodating & helpful, I didn't feel any pressure to purchase anything. Lots of options with a good price range! Highly recommended if you visit Brisbane.

To call this a museum is a bit of an exaggeration. It’s a few small rooms behind an opal jewelry store where you can look at specimens of opals, some videos, maps, etc. It felt like they put it together to bring business to the jewelry store. In that respect, I suppose it worked. It got me out there (and it’s a bit outside of the main part of Brisbane). But it really didn’t feel like a museum and it’s not something I’d recommend for people who want to visit a museum. I’d say it’s more appropriate for people who want to buy opal jewelry and want to learn more about it. Personally, I was disappointed, because that’s not what I was looking for.

Best opals EVER and best jewellery in there shop and online even the silver they use is of the absolute best quality! I took clients there 4 times and purchased pieces and also bought some rings on line! I love love love all their jewellery and they use only solid opals not triplets or doublets, and definitely nothing synthetic just genuine opal. They have a special lift for wheelchairs interactive areas for kids and they have a movie room where on arrival you can learn all about the opals your going to see throughout the museum! I won’t buy my opal jewellery anywhere else now and that’s the truth! their quality just can’t be beat!! I bought several silver rings and even those they send in a gorgeous polished genuine wooden box, just quality and class from start to finish!

Eclectic mix of opal items ranging from mining history to exquisite opal specimens. The tour starts off with a short movie detailing the history and science of opals. The museum supplies a tablet containing short informative videos while you are on a self-guided tour. The best part of the museum is seeing the different types of opals and the methods used to process them into beautiful jewelry and display items.

Very friendly and outgoing staff provided a quick but through tour on how Opals are formed and mined in Australia. They let you hold the owner’s personal collection in your hands. They have a great store attached, but do not pressure you to buy at all. They were very helpful in finding the perfect gift in my price range.

Absolutely awesome place. Beautiful pieces. I would very highly recommend. It was very educational and it was lovely to meet their pet (Stampee); so cute. They are moving to a bigger place soon due to such high demand (across the road). I will definitely come back.

Love Australia and also opals, so just a matter of time til I bought my own opal from the shop online. Although I have never personally visited the museum it will be on my list on my next visit. Received my opal pendant in good time considering the effects of Covid, beautifully presented in its box and wonderful blue sparkles when it catches the light. Great purchase, very happy. Many thanks from the UK

Very interesting tour with a good shop. The tour is very personal and informative. We were with one other couple. They don't do a hard sell to buy that is quite refreshing. Easy parking very near. Free as well. We'll worth going on. Lots of information and the chance to hold some opals and inspect them with assistance to identify the difference between a low value to high value stone

Lovely museum tucked away on the side of the main road. A few small insect enclosures and fishtank upon entry. Free shop entry but $5 for the museum visit but it's definitely worth while with their super passionate and informative staff. Recommended.

I visited the museum with my boyfriend a few months ago and we loved it! You can learn a lot about opals and you can see a lot of amazing stones! If you stop at the jewellery shop (what I highly recommand), you can probably find the opal of your dreams. We bought 4 necklaces and it was so hard to choose! Now I'm in France and I bought a beautiful pendant to my mum for Christmas... Can't wait to see it! Thank you Brisbane Opal Museum

Nice place to visit to see the Opals, go on a guided tour. Also the Opals can be bought as jellery , watch the cutting and polishing as well.

Bought the opal for my (now) wife's engagement ring from this mob and whilst there learned of the 'Opal Experience' -- basically a tour of their in-house museum which is ace in itself but also includes an opal rubbing. So we teed that up for the hen party and all the girls went and had a look around the museum and rubbed their own opal! What an awesome experience for them all, they'll have some fantastic necklaces and priceless memories from the day. Great stuff.

Opal jewellery store just north of the city with plenty of public transport options to get you there. Friendly staff who know their product. Has a small museum about the history of Australian opal mining etc for a small entry fee. Nice opal jewellery and rough opal specimens. Definitely worth a visit.

A lovely place to visit and buy fine opal jewellery. Staff are nice. However car parking is a problem. No reserved parking bay for customers. Car park mostly occupied by gym members. Better not come on rainy days.

I love this shop! We visited the museum and got the opportunity to meet Geoff; he is so passionate about the opals that it was contagious. We are from the U.S. and the afternoon at the museum/store was so much fun, and we are extremely happy with the jewelry we bought. have been shopping online since back home and have another three pieces on lay away. This jewelry makes great gifts! You can feel safe shopping with this store. We have another trip to Brisbane planned for next February and definitely plan to spend another afternoon here!

Australian opals are very well known worldwide. This museum and jewelry shop is a great place to learn of the history of opals. They have a very extensive and beautiful collection of great opal jewelry.

It's so interesting. Loved the "fossicking" section where you can find an uncut opal to take home. My friend found a Lightning Ridge one!

  • 5/5 Justin K. 6 months ago on Google
Place is beautiful and brilliant. Fantastic customer service. I can't comment on the tour itself as I didn't do it. They have plenty of beautiful opals to purchase, a mystery box. My favourite was definitely the fossicking area. Just spray the stones with water , grab the magnifying glass and watch specks of raw opal come to life under the light. Fossicking area really fit my vibe, and uber cheap at $10/stone. $150 later, worth it !

The museum has a lot of interesting information about mining and opal formation and there are so many different opals to feast your eyes upon. If you love opals, and gems in general it is a must see. You can also choose out of the bin of random opal rocks to have one polished and maybe get lucky with some nice pieces! Thank you to Bryce for the nicely polished opal, and Susan and Misha for the lovely conversions. It was a great day to spend a few hours!

  • 5/5 Dan M. 4 months ago on Google
Such a fantastic experience. The 5$ self your is a quarter of the fun. Finding your own opals in the large off cuts and having them polished was the highlight for sure. The staff are super friendly and VERY knowledgeable. Make sure to stop here on your trip! Special thanks to Bryce, Susan, and Misha.

I enjoyed it! There's lots of discussions about "museum" or not. A, it's free. B, where else can you learn more about these beautiful gemstones? So, have a look if you want to buy or not! Thanks for the informative and entertaining 1 1/2 hour.

My family and I visited the Brisbane Opal Museum around Xmas last year. Geoff took his time to explain and answer my questions about opals while we were there. He also provided me some valuable information of how to select opals through email subscription. Last week, me and my Dad finally purchased our first opals. They are stunning and perfect in every way. Shape, size and colour. Great quality opals and excellent customer service. If you want to learn about opals or looking to buy one, Brisbane Opal Museum is there for you.

I made an online purchase - I usually wouldnt do this with jewelry, but this is the new covid normal I guess (I'm in Sydney). Delivery was quick, discreet and secure. The opal earings look amazing, much more 'fire' in real life compared to the pics and video. I will be a repeat customer for sure. * side note for the Brisbane opal team: great job with the videos as that was what made me comfortable purchasing online.

Wanted to find earrings to compliment my wife's opal necklace and after reviewing the museum shop's website, I chatted with Susie. She had me email her a photo of the necklace and she and Geoff confirmed my choice would match. My wife loves the earrings! Great service!

I ordered an opal pendant recently from the Brisbane Opal Museum. The website is fantastic, giving plenty of information on all of the opals they sell, with videos attached showing the opal from different angles and also being reviewed by a model, which is great since you can see how it looks being worn. Geoff was also very accommodating after I made my purchase to allow me to switch it to another one afterwards when I changed my mind. The delivery occurred super fast and the opal looks amazing. Can't wait to give it to my girlfriend for her birthday :) Thanks for everything Geoff!

After wanting to purchase a opal ring, reasearching my options i knew this place was where i will find my opal. Plus i live in the next suburb which is handy 😁😂 The endless great reviews don't lie. We had a great morning wandering through the fascinating displays. The artwork is incredible, the tour was interesting and the areas very well planned out. I bought my opal ring because it spoke to me. It really does tell a story. And knowing where it came from, in a mine they own, makes it extra special gives you peace of mind. They just love opals, the history, the hunt, everything that goes into each and every one they find. Staff so friendly and helpful. A must visit when in Brissie.

  • 5/5 Courtney H. 3 years ago on Google
I ordered 2 pieces online. I was hesitant ordering without actually seeing the pieces but online there was detailed videos of each opal. Delivery was prompt within 2 days (Brisbane to Melbourne). The opals came with instructions of care, beautifully packaged and I could see the pride and care the owner took in sending them to me. 100% would order from them again. You won't be disappointed :) Thank you for my beautiful opals!

49% Museum 51% Shop .... nicely done. But as a European you have a completely different expectation when you hear "museum". It is more of an opal business with a larger information area. The word museum is a little presumptuous.

My partner had my engagement ring made through the opal museum and it is stunning! Most importantly the whole experience with them was amazing. We went and looked at rings earlier in the year and the staff were so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. I had been to jewellers to look at rings and they were so pushy I was getting anxiety but the staff here were so amazing and it made my ring even more special. If you are considering an opal ring or any other opal jewellery definitely go here you won't be disappointed. Can't recommend it enough. Thank you to everyone at the museum for everything!
