The staff put on a "good show". Don't be fooled. They are actually quite rude and selfish. Particularly the new manager who exaggerates stories - don't trust ANYONE here, residents or staff! The managers do not do their job properly. They kick people with babies/infants out onto the streets. Not very understanding (or just don't care) and don't seem as if they enjoy working here at all. They kick out people they can't "handle" who have mental illnesses. My child's clothes were stolen by another resident from the laundry. The hostels washing machines ruin your clothes. A lot of thieves and people doing drugs and prostitution here and the staff are completely oblivious to it. If you're a couple, you'll be sleeping in seperate single beds. Also, the child health lady who regularly visits basically interrogated me about my parenting while I was seeking support with my mental illnesses. The only thing I can say I am fully satisfied with is that the cooks here are absolutely lovely and make sure they look after you and make sure you eat healthy! I feel it's very stupid they leave milk in the fridges for everybody to share but no cold drinking water. All in all, I thought it was a great place in the beginning but gradually things started going downhill and now I am incredibly disgusted. This hostel made things harder for us when we were getting back on our feet. I don't recommend going here unless you are a junkie or unless you are absolutely desperate and it is a last resort!

The staff were friendly and always helped you regarding any issue with room or service. The cooks always gave us nutritious meals three times a day. We never had a problem with other residents but sometimes the odd minor issue like noise at late hour at night. Good place to stay until you get a place to rent or move into. The room price is very reasonable for indigenous folk needing housing. Safety and security are a top priority as is customer satisfaction. My fiancee and I stayed here for 2 months. There was a lady who stayed there and indeed was needing a medical evaluation so she was moved to a hospital due to a mental illness of hers but it is rare for anything to occur at the hostel. The annonymos user who posted in here must have been lieing and if you post here at least leave your name. I would personally recommend this place to anyone.

I stayed at Yumba for a little over 3 months when I was relocated to Brisbane under a DV transfer. I arrived a blithering mess & the staff made me so comfortable & made my stay a blessing. The private rooms are roomy, clean, air cond & have ensuite. Meals are provided, home cooked, delicious & served in communal dining area. I got a TV for my room but there's a communal TV room with a couple of TVs, laundry facilities available & linen provided, on site staff 24/7, across the road from 199 bus & 5min walk to ferry. I can't speak highly enough of Yumba & everything it does at affordable cost. Thank you Yumba!

One of the best hostel/boarding house-style places for indigenous Australians I've stayed in. The place is well-maintained, the staff are very polite (but can also be stern if necessary), the rooms are clean with minimal wear and tear, ensuite toilets and showers, cleaning equipment and free laundry facilities provided along with 3 meals/day, meals also prepared and stored for after-hours students/workers. It's mixed-gender and kids are allowed. The maximum stay is 12wks/3mths with weekly room inspections, so it's basically what's called "supported medium-term transitional-accommodation", to encourage residents into a routine for when they move on. It has helped me a lot with my college studies, and I will probably miss this place when I go. The rent is very reasonable (especially considering meals/board and utilities are included with free Wi-Fi around the corner at Orleigh Park ferry terminal) and there is no bond but it would be best to arrange it to move on. Definitely a great place for those in need.

Angelo and the staff at Yumba Hostel are Rock Stars! 50 young men aged from 15 - 17 years old and 12 adults travelled from cairns to Brisbane for the Murri carnival. we stayed for 1 week and the staff had our lunches packed everyday ready to leave first thing in the morning.
