The assistant Manager's boyfriend didn't like something a guest (a guy) said to either him or his girlfriend (the assistant manager) and attacked the guest. The assistant manager also got hurt in the process and it was a huge ordeal. My friends and I were made to call the police since the AM and her bf didn't and the bf + another staff member even told us not to but a guest was attacked. Someone had come up to us before the staff told us not to begging for us to call the cops. Everyone is still employed to my knowledge and as a domestic violence survivor it was just very upsetting to witness. If it were guests then it wouldn't effect my rating because you can't control guests just the response to it but it was the staff & wasn't handled at all. Beyond that the room was ok, I was in a private room for 4 nights. The bed was pretty low, I'm only 5'2 and 27 but found the bed a bit too low. I know it's a hostel but for the same price point I've stayed in ones a bit nicer in other hostels. Upside was it had its own bathroom & a mini fridge. The drain desperately needed to be declogged but otherwise was fine.

Worst Hostel i have ever been to. Staff are scruffy and rude. Mattress old and worn out you can feel every spring. Bathroom dirty, fixtures broken and hot water comes only sporadically. kitchen resembles a battlefield and is extremely dirty. Construction site between the guests is being worked on. It stinks and is generally very dirty everywhere. Hostel generally very old.

Summerhouse is reasonably priced, however on our stay we weā€™re quite disappointed with the management and cleanliness. There is mould all over the ceiling in the bathroom, it smelt like urine, none of the reading lights worked, the toilet seat wasnā€™t even attached to the toilet, the room hadnā€™t been swept or mopped, there was hair all over the bathroom floor and there is used tissues and rubbish under all the bunkbeds. They hadnā€™t checked the state of the room before we arrived. We also have had to ask several times for the room to be cleaned and it still wasnā€™t. We had also booked our room privately for 6 people a week prior, but they notified us at 10:30AM on the day of our arrival that one of our guests had to be placed in a separate room than us.

The best backpackers in Brisbane by far! From the moment you arrive, you'll be welcomed by the amazing staff and all the other friendly guests into the kind and caring nomad utopia that is Summer House. Daily activities like the BBQ night, karaoke and movie night means there's always something to do and someone to talk to. The highlight is definitely the rooftop though. With nearly 360 degree sweeping views of the City, Southbank and West End, it's a wonderful atmosphere every single night. The prices are cheaper than most other places nearby, with special weekly rates for longer stays. Completely inclusive and accepting of all differences, they're all so nice and sweet, you'll rarely, if ever, feel homesick at your new home away from home. Instantly part of the community, you'll make more friends than you can count, with memories that will last a lifetime. Summer House will restore your faith in the quality of character of the people of the world, and that is priceless. Can't recommend it enough! Choose this one, you'll be glad you did, guaranteed šŸ‘Œ

Very bad hostel in general, a very tiny kitchen and eating room. The permanent staff is very mean and autoritary with the Ā«Ā backpacker staffĀ Ā». Itā€™s look likes modern slavery, While they were doing their best, the permanent staff was doing absolutely nothing

The only good thing about this hostel is its location. If you are over 6 feet tall, you wonā€™t be able to lay flat on the beds. There is no curtain on the beds for privacy. The air conditioning works, but if itā€™s sunny out, the blinds are in such bad shape that they let the sun in and the room cooks all day. There are some really weird rulesā€”we were told by a cleaner that we werenā€™t allowed to have any drinks in our room, including water. But it really ā€œdepends on the managerā€™s mood.ā€ If you get an en-suite room, youā€™re not allowed to leave any of your toiletries/towels/etc. in the bathroom. You also canā€™t put anything on top of the lockers. The staff comes in 3-5 times a day to do multiple tasks. Water coming out of the sinks smelled foul, I used bottled water the entire time I was there. They were also painting and doing construction projects that start around 8 AM and are very loud. The entire upstairs is all sub flooring right now with no warning to residents. I also saw a door propped open at 3 AM with a sign on it saying the door was broken. Overall, you get what you pay for, but they could do so much better. Iā€™ve stayed in many hostels, this one ranks towards the bottom for sure.

Horror Hostel - staying there is thread to your health and well-being. The First room given to us without any windows or air ventilation had a strange smell, which made it hard to breathe after 10min we stayed in there. Later we were told that was because the previous guest smoked drugs in there. The Bedsheets werenā€™t changed and had stains. The Mattress had red and yellow spots all over the place, which was truly disgusting. Luckily the helpful staff put us in a dorm room with windows, but the hygiene and general condition of the facility wasnā€™t much better. Mattress and general cleanness was still unacceptable. Would never stay there again, only positive things to note are the very helpful staff and the full refund we got. The Facilities are in disrepair and hygiene standards are not met at all. All in All it was a shocking experience and I really hope I didnā€˜t get bed bugs or else from my one night staying there.

Where to start??.. I've stayed in hostels all over the world and I know what to expect but this is the only one I've left after one night and found another to stay in. Firstly, it wasnt clean. mouldy, and holes. Needs a real good renovation. I wouldn't even consider walking around anywhere barefoot. No even in the rooms. the name should be change to crackhouse backpacker's cause that's what it felt like . Do yourself a favour and avoid and spend that extra money on a better place.

ONCE MORE AGAIN AS THEY DELETED MY REVIEW horrible horrible horrible. Dont even try to stay there. Bed bugs in the rooms cockroaches in the kitchen. Threatened me of calling police and didnt refund my key deposit. Just bunch of scams. They were also contacting other backpackers in Brisbane trying to stalk me where I was. Its also funny because they tried to contact backpackers in Sydney where I stay right now to get me out of my accomodation :D i already reported them to current affairs as I am not only one who experienced that. Oi!!! There is nothing like no refund policy in Australia. If you dont get your service you paid for you have full rights for refund. Eventhough it will cost me lot more than I will gain I will put this through the QCAT as these muppets messed up with wrong person!!!!

We stayed here for a week and during that time we had to be moved room after a mouse was found in someones suitcase and then another was found running around under our bed. The room we were moved to had no ceiling in the bathroom and a hole in the celing above the bed (where we could hear the mice running around above our heads) staff confirmed there is mice in the ceilings although they ā€˜dont usually bother peopleā€™. The kitchen is way overcrowded and the guests are usually extremely loud at night time when on rootfop etc, which obviously isnā€™t great if you are on second floor in a hostel that clearly isnt sound proof as advertised. Staff are as helpful as can be considering how blatantly understaffed they are. We had also booked expecting a free breakfast as that was confirmed to be included on the booking and were told a day after arrival that this was no longer an option. I wouldnā€™t stay here again even if I was paid.

to flee, there are mice and rats. managers do not hesitate to take your stuff when it is on the floor. the value for money is really not good. the hygiene of the showers is deplorable they are under construction so you shower between chemicals and pieces of wall

I wouldnā€™t recommend staying here. The staff are extremely rude and will take your belongings if your room ā€œis too messyā€, and will charge you $20 to get them back. The room themselves arenā€™t bad but the atmosphere created by the staff made it feel like I was in a prison. Over all itā€™s a stingy hostel and would never stay here again.

Room: I was lucky to come across a room of 4 with bathroom so only problem the windows are blocked so sometimes it doesn't smell good i need to block the door to leave it open. Kitchen : only negative point she is super small lacks a lot of space to cook and to eat and people do not respect dirty everything.

One of the worst hostels I've stayed at in my life (and I've stayed at many around the world). 2 leaks in the room from the ceiling while it was actively raining, one drip being caught in a lost property bucket and another just dripping into a bunk bed that a girl was sleeping in. The room next door was being rennovated(?) and so about 10 mattresses were in the corridor right outside my room for a few hours and work men were coming into my room without knocking and started moving my bags without asking (while I was in the room) in order to access somehwere (a door that was blocked by a locker). I understand it is a shared space and if course reception and housekeeping are going to knock and come in at points but you still expect some level of privacy. Room completely unfit for for rent. If it is needed as access to renovate another room then this room shouldn't have been in use either. Common areas so dirty (so many crumbs everywhere) and even on uncovered pieces of foam that was used as seats in the TV room. Laundry situation dire. No laundry specially for staff so they had taken one of the 2 washing machines and marked it as out of order just so they could use it. But they were using the both to wash sheets which obviously there was a lot of for an entire hostel so I had to wait till 11pm till I could do my own laundry. So much dried up soap in the detergent drawer that needed to be scraped out but I desperately needed to wash my clothes. I ended up with bleach stains on multiple items of clothing so now those are ruined. And I paid $5 for the privilege. Toilets only on ground floor, which is not great. And while I was in a mixed dorm I think it's ironic the female only dorms where upstairs if the female toilets are going to be downstairs. Only complained directly about the first 2 points regarding the actual room as I felt these were the main points relevant in terms of asking for a refund. First time in my life I have asked for a refund as I am not usually the type. Was only offered credit (as if I would want to stay again?) I think that's ridiculous considering the room was probably LEGALLY not for rent, which I said but I just wanted to leave so did not argue much. Basically just massively avoid.

Stayed in a private room with ensuite. The room was freshly renovated so felt very clean. The staff were fun and friendly and the bar did a $5 pasta meal and had free bingo. Defo a great place to stay if you want a friendly, clean, safe place to stay. Oh and they had free bikes which was awesome!

Stayed at many hostels during my life and this is by far the worst one ever. Everything was dirty. The kitchen had cockroaches Iā€™m surprised this place was even still open. The rooms looked like they had never been vacuumed and the fridge made my food go mouldy in a day. i wouldnā€™t care if I paid minimal but I paid quite a lot for this place. Donā€™t ever recommend it!

Heey folks... I had a poor experience getting at Summer Backpackers Hostel. Unfortunately, the worst thing was the kitchen, Believe in me after 10 pm they close the kitchen, so as we couldn't prepare our meal or drink water, for exemple. Other thing that drove me crazy was the breakfast, it always started just after 09am. As I'm student, I used to leave 07am and I was arriving evening late, so it was terrible for me. About the rooms, I was luck even I had taken a mix room, because my roommates were organized, friendly and respectful, when we switched off the light, nobody switched on, for exemple. Moreover, the toilets are outside the room in the ground floor. About the cleaning, they didn't use to clean in details, only superficially. The reception always closed early, but we had a number to contact them in an emergency case or if you need something. The location is reasonable, near to the Suncorp stadium, the Coles supermarket, the Roma station and to South Brisbane. I was studying in Adelaide Street and in 20 minutes walking I got there. The hostel has a beautiful roof top where you can enjoy with friends ande socialize. In general, if you're student, I don't recommend to stay in this hostel.

The amenities are run down and tired, the rooms, the kitchen and the bathrooms are dirty and frankly disgusting. The staff is mostly rude and they seem to profit from desperate backpackers to increase prices that are definitely not worth the accommodation provided. Also from talking with staff, I heard they donā€™t even wash the sheets properly and they have very old and stained beds. Overall, avoid it at all cost!

The management are very friendly, but the hostel has recently turned into a bit of a half-way house for locals who have various mental health issues or drug problems. My 2nd day at the hostel I was threatened by the night manager/cleaner in the girls bathroom. Stayed another 3 weeks as my partner was working for accommodation - but should have really took the 2nd day at the hostel as a sign of things to come. People screaming in the night, police called, rooftop closing hours constantly extended despite our room being underneath it - so constant noise. People drinking, smoking weed in rooms all night. People staying in rooms with bail orders, etc. This hostel can't really seem to decide if it's a party hostel, a hostel for people getting on their feet after hard times or a chilled out hostel. The team were really nice to me, but I would not recommend this hostel for lone female travellers - it's just simply not safe.

I've never stayed in a backpackers place before so I wasn't sure what to expect. If I could give this place a million stars I would..the management are unbelievabley friendly kind and treat everyone with respect. The room is clean fresh towels sheets whenever you want, toilets and showers immaculately clean multiple time a day, and kitchen and fridges so immaculately clean. Its like a family atmosphere so caring. There's been a few bad customers and quickly removed. Of course they leave bad reviews. I feel so safe here I would recommend anyone who needs somewhere safe and secure to come here. The other backpackers seem to let anyone in them dealers and addicts seem to thrive in the other place but here zero tolerance of drugs and bad behaviours. I love this place and the management and cleaners are wonderful. Thanks Chris Hannah Chan tamara Shae and all the crew for making us feel wanted love lyn and michael

The prices when I arrived were fine. It's really close to the city center. Anyway the house is not in good shape. Bring ear plugs because it's very noisy, you hear everything through the walls. The kitchen is way too small for so many people. Beds are very hard and not comfortable. Everything is not very clean in general. It worked for two nights but I definitely had better hostels. Especially close to the city center it's harder to find good ones.

Rooms were acceptable, bedding was clean (saw staff putting on fresh bedding on other beds too). Close(ish) to the CBD. Everyone was very helpful. $20 room key deposit which I got back. However, the kitchen was hell on earth, far too small for everyone at dinner time so I just waited until later to cook. There were events on every night, but I didn't attend any during my stay. All in all an okay stay for my first ever hostel experience!

Very close to coles, The rooms are good not to small. The kitchen is very warm but okay to cook. The hostel has a very nice view from the rooftop and a lot of special days like pancake day with free pancakes. Only bad thing kitchen and rooftop are closing at night and the chilling area is very small. The people there are very nice one of the reception helped me with a problem of my card. U should go there šŸ¤

My experience here was horrible. When I arrived no one told me which bed I was going to use, they simply gave me a key to the room, when I entered the room it was dirty, all the beds with used sheets. The kitchen is too small and the refrigerators don't fit everyone's food so it spoils quickly. People steal your food. You see cockroaches everywhere. The bathrooms always smell bad and the washing machines are always damaged. The internet does not reach the entire place. I would NOT recommend this place to anyone because it is too bad and too expensive for what it offers.

  • 1/5 James 7 months ago on Google
Super passive aggressive staff. If you don't abide by their strict rules they will go out their way to punish you and take no responsibility. Had some random guys dirty sock shoved on my bed(his fault not mine but I'm punished anyway) and they shoved his dirty underwear and socks into my bag. No apology what's soever, just "the staff need to clean". For reference, everyone in my room is neat and tidy. Hostel seems a lot quieter since last time I was here and now I see why.

This was most likely the worst hostel experience I've had. Rooms were stinky and poorly ventilated. Kitchen smelled like garbage wasn't collected for a while. The bathrooms were average clean but there was not hot water in the (female) shower. The staff was nice though.

Only had a short 3 night 2 day stay here but was lovely. all of the Rooms where clean The staff where friendly Location is 5 min walk from station which is 2 train stops away from the heart of brisbane. Spoke to long staying travelers aswell and they had no complaints. Would defiently recommend you stay here

The tiniest kitchen and eating area we have ever seen for such a great amount of people. The space is very closed off. There is no ventilation in the kitchen (and as a result, it is uncomfortably hot in there) and just one tiny open window in our shared room we couldn't reach. There were also no curtains we could use to keep the room dark in the early hours of the morning. Our keycards stopped working after not even an hour and after they fixed it, it still didn't want to work half of the time. We were scared to go to the bathroom at night and be locked out of the room. It is very much a party hostel. People are screaming in the hallways at all hours of the night. We didn't like this hostel at all and were relieved to leave it after 3 nights of barely any sleep.

Horrible hostel, I got put in with a homeless man and a someone with leprocy. After being told I could not change rooms I woke up to the homeless man sniffing my feet. Great people outside of management. Manager is greedy and nobody likes her. Never heard one good word about her from the guests. She thinks that backpackers are made of money and will take deposits and charge fines for the most minor things. Childish management.

Omg all I can say is revolting! I can not understand how anyone could possibly rate this place more then a one. Even a one is too much. It's basically like a haven for junkies and homeless people. It stinks like public toilet mixed with Body oudour. How is this place even legal? They should pay people to stay there, not the other way around. We couldn't even stay the one night.

Amazing staff members. Super friendly, always ready to help or chat. Felt very welcome. The hostel has all the needed facilities for cooking, washing... Everything works perfectly. Had no trouble with it. Rooms and shared place for chilling, a tv room, and a rooftop nice and clean. Good for hanging out with other backpackers. No noise after 10 pm which lets you to actually have some rest. Good location as well. Not far from the centre, close to the station. I would definitely stay again

I'm not sure where we stayed, but it didn't look like the pictures shown. This hostel is run down and tired, and in desperate need of refurbishment. Some key points: - Room hadn't been vacuumed or bins emptied when we arrived (paid for a private room) Staff did come and rectify this as well as giving us a remote for the air con - WiFi connection was poor and slow - A girl slept rough on her coat the entire night in a toilet cubicle which staff did know about - Toilet cleaning commenced at 2am next to our room which involved loud banging of metal objects and moving large items, whilst the cleaner played music through a speaker - As the signs said we removed our bedding at the end of our stay to find a heavily stained mattress cover (could easily be replaced) - Signage around the building that's months out of date - The hostel seems understaffed and poorly managed, but it's too much of a state to attract people to work there - A kitchen that's too small and ill-equipped for the size of the hostel - Poorly maintained decor and rooms Not asking for a 5 star resort at this price but somewhere relatively clean would be good. Plus side, showers had good pressure.

Nice hostel with good atmosphere. A great view from the rooftop. Special mention to staff member Jai who made sure the place was running smoothly and that I had everything I needed to be comfortable and enjoy my stay. At the time of my booking I believe it was also the cheapest hostel in the city.

  • 2/5 Izzy S. 1 year ago on Google
The two stars are mainly for the people Iā€™ve met here rather than the hostel and staff. Itā€™s a good place to meet people with lots going on. Unfortunately thereā€™s a problem with rude and sarcastic staff. The pool also hasnā€™t been cleaned all week even though dogs were allowed to swim one evening. I also had a problem with bed bug bites - I asked staff to check my room which they said theyā€™d do but it was very clear that evening that nobody had been in to have a look. Iā€™ve enjoyed my week and met great people, but would choose to stay elsewhere next time.

Mold covering walls and ceilings had everyone with mold exposure symptoms. Leaking roof. Dirty bed and bathrooms. Dirty kitchen. Vomit in hallways. Tried to ask for a refund and staff was rude and said there was not enough mold to issue a refund meanwhile the cleaners were spraying and scraping it off the walls.
