Great tour guides. They are born and bred in Soweto so they have native knowledge and understanding of the place. The walking tour is best if you want to have a real feel for the area, and you get to talk with the guide as you walk and ask questions. It would be nicer if the meal is had at one of the places along the way so you spend more time soaking in the atmosphere. Really enjoyed it. Lungile, our guide, was genial and knowledgeable.

Had a great experience staying at Soweto: I recommend staying here and doing at least one of the offered tours. Many people come for the day tours but, on the downside, not many people spend the night at the hostel so it can be a bit empty during evenings/nights.

As mentioned by others, the bicycle tour is great. Very nice hostel, friendly staff, good food and an interesting location.

If you go to South Africa, you need to go to Soweto, and the bike tour they have there is such a good way of learning about the past and present. Amazing people and powerful stories. Great vibe at the hostel as well, just relax or play football with the local kids.

Soweto walking tour with Lungile was brilliant. These tours allow you to get a full understanding of a part of South Africa's history and all guides are local and perfectly prepared to provide you with the best experience you can get and answer all of your questions. I would definitely recommend Lebo's tours of you want to understand Joburg and South Africa.

We did a bicyle tour! We really enjoyed it! Our guide ‘Lollypop’ had so much to tell us. He really gave us a look into the Soweto community and he really made us feel welcome. Can’t recommended enough! Go enjoy Soweto with Lebo’s Soweto Tour!

We always have such a great time at Lebo's backpackers! I did the bike tour twice (never slept at the backpackers tho), and I always love it! Guides are lovely, and happy to answer any of your questions, and share with you their stories and culture. Sharing lunch with them also is a nice moment, and the food is so tatsy! Thank you for the warm welcome each time, it's always a pleasure to go back.

We took the four hour bicycle tour through Soweto. After having enjoyed a wonderful lunch we followed our guide Mfundo around the various areas of Soweto. His excellent story telling skills made our tour come alive. He was a true-fully enjoyable person to be around. Thank you!!

We did the guided tour of Soweto and it was a great experience. Being from the US we were able to learn a ton about the history of South Africa, Soweto, the freedom movement and hear from people who lived through apartheid. Very powerful, eye opening and educational. Thanks!

My husband and I took a 2 hour bike tour today followed by lunch and couldn’t have been more pleased. The hostel facilities are immaculate. The greeting was gracious. We had no idea what to expect this being our first time in Joburg and Soweto, but the staff and indeed all the residents waving to us on the streets made us feel so welcomed. The bike tour is moderate with a few hills, but has lots of stops for learning about historic sites as well as Soweto life in general. A big shout out to our guide Mfundo who was not only a wonderful teacher but just a warm and lovely person. This is a must for anyone wanting to understand first hand this very important part of the world. Oh, and the homemade traditional lunch and fresh brewed beer was fantastic. Next time we’d love to do the all-day bike tour! Thanks Lebo’s!

An absolute GEM of a place. Immaculately clean rooms and bedding, the best staff with super smiles and super service. They offer dinner and breakfast to order off of their menus which are reasonably priced and super tasty. The chef is always smiling and laughing and knows how to cook wholesome and tasty meals. There is an awesome fire pit with enough seating for everyone. They have a local marimba band that comes in to entertain clients with music and interactive drumming sessions. The ablutions are clean and they have awesome hot showers. There is also a brand new communal kitchen for those travellers who wish to prepare their own meals and they also have a cute rustic bar on site that serves wine, beer, soft drinks and even delicious cocktails. Wonderful place and I will definitely be back. Thank you to everyone at Lebos Backpackers

I took the 4h Soweto bike tour in March 2022. The guide was great and learning about all the history was very interesting. We stopped at the Hector Pieterson Memorial, the Mandela House, in a shebeen... it was a great experience.

Lebo's really is an oasis in the city - super chilled vibes, lots of space to unwind and many options for exploring the area. The facilities are spotless, meals are generous and tasty, and the hospitality is second to none. We highly recommend doing any of the tours (walking, tuk-tuk, bike) - the guides are knowledgeable, enthusiastic and engaging - and spending a few hours relaxing at the outdoor restaurant. We look forward to visiting again and sharing this great spot with more friends and family. Thanks so much to everyone we met for a very special weekend!

I spent three nights here, and had a wonderful time. The staff are amazing. Everyone is very friendly. You can pre order meals if you choose, and the food is delicious. They do tours from here as well. I went on a two hour bike tour and learned a lot about the neighborhood. If you want to stay in Soweto this is your spot.

They gave us an amazing tour of Soweto, we not only got to see the area, our tour guide was a wealth of information!! We even got to support local businesses. This was the best part of staying in Joburg.

I did a 4hour Soweto cycle tour from here and it was fantastic! I would definitely recommend this to a friend. Very easy gentle cycling with lots of stops to learn about the area. The hostel grounds were incredibly well run and the food was delicious.

Nice relaxed place and the food was also good except for the steamed bread (Ujeqe) which was a little undercooked that day. The other little thing that concerned me is there is a footpath going through the establishment from the neighbouring park to the railway line, this could be a security risk especially for the dinner sessions but other than that a solid 95% for this place.

Cannot recommend enough the bike tours! We did the 4h bike tour through Soweto and it has been an amazing experience. Our guides have been incredible, very knowledgeable and with a contagious enthusiasm. We had occasion to stop for snacks and met the locals and at the end of the tour we were served a delicious lunch. We’ve only been in SA for two days so far but this experience has been an absolute highlight of the trip!!

Loads of activities out of this backpacker's hostel. Not so very close to Soweto main area that you would want to walk it, but an easy uber. Staff very friendly, lots of community activities originate here. Tours and bikes available.

Staying here was great for what it is — a safe place with a nice community in Soweto. The evening dinner and campfire was quite this, this was among my favorite hostels I’ve stayed at. I took a 2 hour bike tour and found it was worthwhile!

We went on the Soweto Walking tour with Linda and it was absolutely amazing and very informative. I am a South African born in Soweto, Diepkloof and it was a lovely experience to get to know more about our history and not just what i was exposed to. Thank you Linda, keep up the good work and continue to educate.

I did the Soweto bicycle tour 3 times over a period of 8 years with the Lebo‘s team. It is so good to see, that the guides did not loose the smallest spark of enthusiasm, fun and care for all participants. They are well organized, knowledgeable about the area (as they are locals) and just soo friendly. Keep on doing what you do, thank you.

A bike tour here is a must-do while in Joburg ⭐️ We visited on our first day in South Africa and couldn't think of a better introduction to the country! From start to finish Lebo's is friendly, fun and welcoming. They provide a fantastic grounding in the history of this vibrant community, shared in an interesting and engaging way. Linda was an excellent guide and a great person. We were lucky to have a small group of three on our two-hour tour, so we had plenty of chances to chat and ask him questions, all of which were answered knowledgeably. We felt safe and welcomed throughout. The lunch after the tour was also excellent, served in the shade at the backpackers which is a true haven. Absolutely recommend 👍

Had a club meeting there today. Amazing place, lovely staff. Good vibes and positive energy flowing all around. KG was a great host. Shout-out to Nthabiseng for helping me locate some chillies for my food😂. As for the food, I didn't enjoy the chicken stew lacked flavour and salt. Dumpling was sweet. Vegetarian stew was good. I'd definitely come back again, just for the vibes and to try the food again. Overall I enjoyed my time there

Lebo’s backpackers is a beautifully crafted indoors and outdoors space with the utmost attention to supporting and respecting the local community. My guide for the 4 hour bike tour was extremely knowledgeable and explained the important history of Soweto while exploring the different neighborhoods. Could not recommend this more!

Lebos back packers is Definitely a secret home there is a nice tree house that hangs in the middle of the yard, beneath it is decorated with a nice pool table for ge to who love battling it out, there's a fire place for late night talks and great laughs, the art of storytelling telling is well expressed on different times of the Month. This is a must experience when you are in Joburg, the space has so much to offer it taps into all 3 worlds rural life, township life and city life. Wow what a beautiful view of Soweto when standing on the cliff of Lebos.

Phyll Andile Amelia Tado Lungile Isaac Matsidiso and everyone else working to make Lebo's a wonderful place to rest and learn, Thank you! I had the best time staying here for 4 days. I learned about apartheid history and resistance on Lungile's 4 hr bicycle tour (which really was 5 hr because of my questions) and learned to cook a traditional meal during the food tour, expertly guided by Phyll and Matsidiso. We picked our vegetables in the garden right before! One of the highlights of my entire trip was the visit to the aquaponics project, only 5 min from the hostel. Max, a manager there, spoke to us about the fight against food insecurity and the need for education around self sustenance. I was moved and so honored to be given the responsibility of choosing the cabbage for our lunch meal. :) For meals, I enjoyed fantastic and homey meals made by the hilarious and kind Andile! The environment was super welcoming and every night I met new people who gave me a different perspective on politics, education, travel, etc. I may have been a little anxious to travel on my own to a new country for the first time, but my stay at Lebo's grounded me and I leave with so much gratitude for all those who keep it thriving. Ngiyabonga!! Ps. Thanks for all the language lessons ;)

What a special place. We took a two hour tour of Orlando west, Mzimhlophe and Phomolong. I learned new things about Soweto. The tour guides from Soweto Backpackers were so knowledgeable with a grounded perspective of people’s experiences, history and the politics in the township. You can either do the tour on a bicycle, tuk tuk or walk it. We stopped to eat a township favorite - magwinya, snoek fish and archaar. We also stopped at the Walter Peterson memorial which tells the story of the cruelty of the white Apartheid state which fired on student protestors on 16 June 1976. The tour guides were the best, known around the township and this enables them to tell the story of the people with lots of insight. Sadly lots of people have lost jobs due to COVID. So if you can, go explore SA. We have a beautiful country. So many passionate people in tourism are waiting to receive you.

An oasis of rest. The hostel is quite big and has a lot of outside areas where you can sit and relax. The play nice music while you can sip on a refreshing drink. The food is absolutely amazing! The staff is very nice, remembering your name from day one and always asking how you're doing and if you need anything. They offer a vast array of activities. I also felt very at ease walking around the neighbourhood. The vibe is very different then at the centre of Joburg and gives you a much more community feel. Would definitely recommend!

A great group to do a tour with, you get a proper look at the various areas of Soweto. There are a few different options to get around, if you haven't ridden a bike in a while I'd say go with the tuktuk option, a non negotiable is to do the 4 hour tour! It's the right amount of time to see the area properly.

Lebo’s was a fantastic backpackers, has a relaxing atmosphere and I felt super safe even as a solo female traveller. The 4hr Soweto bike tour was an incredible experience with great guides and genuine experiences and interactions with the locals, such as stopping for fresh watermelon and pap! They were super accomodating and helpful especially with organising transport from the airport. The kitchen staff were lovely, overall my only issue is that I didn’t stay for longer! Will 100% visit again if I return to SA.
