Our
experience
with
the
Shepherd
center
was
very
disappointing.
If
you
or
your
loved
one
are
young,
have
a
less
severe
injury/medical
condition,
or
are
only
looking
for
out-patient
therapy,
I
think
Shepherd
would
be
fantastic
for
you.
If
you
are
65+,
have
a
very
severe
injury
and
would
require
long-term
care,
I
would
think
twice.
I’ll
deliver
pros/cons
to
give
a
summary.
Pros:
the
nurses,
therapists,
and
technicians
are
all
wonderful
and
truly
care.
The
Shepherd
Center
has
access
to
a
lot
of
resources
and
professionals.
Oftentimes
they
had
accommodations
that
went
above
what
we
expected,
and
when
you
spoke
to
any
given
employee
(from
surgeons
to
front
desk
to
janitorial
staff)
they
were
all
kind
and
professional.
Cons:
we
found
that
there
was
an
extreme
lack
of
transparency
for
my
dad’s
treatment
plan
and
disorganization
with
his
case
management.
We
also
became
very
concerned
with
my
father’s
balance
of
medications
which
resulted
in
months-long
delirium.
There
were
multiple
miscommunications
and
what
seemed
like
a
lack
of
effort
from
our
case
manager.
Not
to
mention
the
discharge
process
was
a
nightmare,
and
we
arrived
at
the
discharge
facility
with
few
of
the
medication
scripts,
none
of
the
equipment
(specifically
a
ventilator,
which
is
a
pretty
important
piece
to
have
missing),
and
no
trained
nurses
as
was
promised
to
us
by
Shepherd.
It
really
felt
like
they
were
looking
to
dump
off
my
father
as
quickly
as
possible
to
whoever
would
take
him,
which
was
very
disappointing
after
an
already
challenging
experience
of
coming
to
terms
with
lifelong,
severe
complications
from
a
SCI.
My
father,
the
patient,
was
scared
to
death
as
he
began
to
realize
the
discharge
facility
was
unequipped
for
him,
and
was
disappointed
with
how
little
time
the
Shepherd
Center
allowed
him
to
progress
with
physical
therapy
after
he
spent
months
recovering
from
the
bedsore
surgery
(a
bedsore
he
developed
over
a
week
in
the
Shepherd
Center
-
although
staff
later
claimed
he
had
it
when
he
entered…),
subsequent
infections,
and
complications
from
delirium
(which
were
often
dismissed
as
my
father
being
‘old’,
despite
the
fact
they
only
cleared
up
after
they
removed
all
non-essential
medications
at
our
behest.
Doctors
later
agreed
it
was
the
medication).
If
I
had
it
to
do
over
again,
the
Shepherd
Center
would
honestly
be
a
back-up
choice
to
any
facility
that
specializes
with
elderly
patients
with
severe
injuries.
