A few locals suggested Sonny's as one of the best cheesesteak places on that area. They weren't wrong. The sandwich with provolone was delicious. French fries were plentiful. Service was fast and friendly. Was a petty busy place! With good reason!

Nice local spot to grab yourself a Phill...correction, a cheese steak sandwich. Nothing over the top, simple spot to get your grub on. Only complaint, they misheard my order and only gave me a basic cheese steak sandwich and not the loaded. All good though.

We came all the way to Philadelphia to get a real Philly cheesesteak with cheese whiz. We were hoping that Sonny’s Famous Steaks would satisfy our taste and needs. We ordered four cheesesteak and we were disappointed when we were told that this restaurant is out of everything, including french fries, cheese whiz, lettuce, tomato, pickles, other toppings and items. It was a blessing that we were able to get at least provolone cheese, onions, and the ketchup and mustard was only given in small packets and not on the sandwich. We also purchased our french fries and drinks from another nearby restaurants named (OH Brother). Due to Covid-19, the restroom was off limits and we had to wait outside until our food was ready, but this is understandable, due to Covid-19. The staff energy was basic, nothing special. This restaurant accepts cash and credit cards for payments. There is a limited amount of street parking available. After receiving our cheesesteak, we appreciate, that it was loaded with plenty of meat, but we were deeply dissatisfied with the tasteless flavor of our cheesesteak. This can’t be the best cheesesteak in Philly!!!

Freshly grill steaks, nice and warning store settings, offer both inside and outside sittings, free soda refills. Most important is the Philly cheese steak tastes best, yummy.

Superb food and service! It’s not my intention to dwell much on the philly steaks themselves because their reputation precedes them, but I have to say this is one of the best I’ve tried. Excellent bread and very abundant, warm and not oily at all! Anyways, what I do want to mention is the customer service. The lady who took my order was remarkably polite and welcoming, and she even gave me a much appreciated suggestion. It made the whole experience a 10/10, and I’ll definitely come back again!

We really loved Sonny’s. Sandwich was perfect and the service was quick. The person taking orders was the perfect blend of funny, kind, and take charge(definitely needed in a place so busy). Food came out pipping hot and much more quickly than expected. The only thing I would change next time is to add extra cheese to my sandwich. Just a personal preference.

They are definitely famous for a reason! Sooooo glad that we chose this place for lunch! Heads up: CASH ONLY! (There is an ATM there) We decided to make this a must place to visit on our vacation. We were talking to the locals eating in there too.... they all agreed, this is the place for AUTHENTIC cheese steak sandwiches!!

Decided to try this spot as it had decent reviews on Google. The place was quite busy, it was easy to order and I was surprised that they accepted credit cards. There was plenty of seating. However, when I got my cheesesteak and took the first bite I was quite disappointed. The meat was too greasy and had lots of fat, and the overall flavor was bland. I ended up feeding it to the birds in the nearby park.

Wanted a classic, famous cheesesteak & that’s what we got! I can’t speak to what Genos or Pats are like but holy moly Sonny’s blew me away. They were extremely busy when we popped in around 2pm on a Saturday but the employees are such well oiled machine! They all were friendly & seemed to genuinely have fun while working but were still efficient. We waited less than 10 minutes to order & less than 10 to get our food. Snagged a spot at a family style table setup & enjoyed our onion rings (best I’ve ever had), a Sonny’s Loaded cheesesteak with onions/mushrooms/peppers/cheez whiz, and a hot pickled pepper. Freaking yum.

You don’t have to go to the original Philly cheese steak shops to get the best Philly cheese steak, in fact, you shouldn’t. Though they have history, it’s been very commercialized. I suggest somewhere like sonny where it’s not too commercial based and just have great whiz and steak.

One of my favorite steaks in the city. Robust slices of ribeye and a crusty roll to soak up the flavor. Unfortunately on my latest trip, the way they wrapped the sandwich a lot of cheese ended on the paper. Needs more ooze factor! But great sandwich nonetheless.

Great service, great flavors, great bread. Price is good too for a cheesesteak. You can get different types of cheeses and toppings and also fries. There may be a line but it goes fairly quickly. Not much indoor seating room, so don’t expect to bring a crowd in to sit down.

As far as experiencing my first authentic Philadelphia cheese steak I can say that I was very much impressed. Delicious in its entirety, and the line out the door put paid to the quality of this establishment. I would gladly stop by again if I ever returned to Philly!

I was recommended Sonny's as the place to go for my obligatory cheesesteak while visiting Philly... it was excellent! The meat was high quality, bread was good, and cheese was nice. The sandwich was not nearly as greasy as I expected. I got provolone because Cheez Whiz isn't cheese IMO and the name says cheese 🤣 They don't usually add onions but will if you want, and also had some tasty sounding variations. The fries were also good. It was cash only.

Nice place to stop for lunch while visiting the city. I had the grilled cheese and my friend had chicken cheesesteak with fries. It was so good! The fountain drinks were nice for a hot day with free refills.

Long line that moved quickly. Service was efficient more so than friendly. Yummy cheese steaks. Waited longer to get the food than we did to order, but it was worth it! Not tons of seating but there are a handful of tables and counter/stool seating.

One of the most recommended cheesesteaks in town which seemed true as the place was pretty busy yet the service was quick and precise. Even the restroom was well decorated. I ordered the Philly Cheesesteak with additional mushrooms. However, I got my beef super dry, probably overcooked, so it’s hard to chew and it was not flavorful as I thought, would thank the mushrooms to save my palate. Also, not so many beverages option, if you need to hydrate, it is recommended to BYOB!!

Got a loaded cheesesteak with onion rings. Service was fast and friendly. Loved the atmosphere and energy. I really don’t get the love affair with this sandwich, they are dry. It’s alright but (and I am sure I am saying something that is probably taboo) couldn’t you cook it less and serve pink so it has some moisture?

First time in Philly! Had the Cheese Steak with Cheez Whiz, sweet bell peppers and mushrooms. What can I say? It was damn delicious. Not too greasy either! Also the customer service was excellent. Amazing stuff ya'll! Kind regards, Elson Wong

If you are looking to define the "Philly cheese steak" this is the place to do it. Customizable with several cheese and toppings options. The combination of long roll, sliced meat and toppings is made to perfection. Prices are moderate but portions are huge. You get what you pay for. Service was fast. Seating was bar stools and tables and even when busy we found a spot. This is a must when in the area.

A review of the cheesesteak I got at Sony's famous cheesesteak in Old Town Philly follows. That is what you are now reading. I will not get into which is the best place in town. I will leave that for the locals. I ordered one with peppers, onions, cheese, and fries. I wanted the whiz but have not mastered the local Patois. Make sure you read the ordering instruction before stepping up to the counter. Not a complaint, just passing on what I learned. Overall the services were excellent. The sandwich was hot and delicious—each bite filled with gooey cheese and fresh veggies. A great meal at a great price.

I came to Philly for the marathon, but couldn't leave without a cheese steak. The Saturday before the race I was in the nearby area checking out some of the sites and had Sonny's on my list and I wanted to try theirs (I'm from the Buffalo region and know the touristy restaurants where people get their chicken wings, so I am not gonna fall for that). The restaurant is clean and staff was friendly. I ordered and got my seat and waited for my number to get called. It was somewhat before noon and business was picking up, but it didn't take too long for my number to get called. I was not disappointed with the cheese steak. The roll was great, the steak was juicy and the cheese whiz was crazy. I also opted for onions. Simply put, I ate it pretty fast. It was a delicious work of art. I wish I ran the marathon as fast as I ate. Thank you, Sonny's Famous Steaks, bravo!

I've had better, I've had worse. To judge a cheesesteak, you judge each ingredient individually. First, the steak, it was a good cut, nice morsel size but zero flavor (no seasoning at all). The roll, was the best part, the top ⅛" was dense and chewy then fluffy all the way through, exactly what you want. Next, the cheese. Yes, whiz only. Their's was bland. Finally, the ketchup, major loss of points here due to being an off brand and in packets. The atmosphere was good, a little dirty, but not a turn off. Staff was friendly and courteous. Overall, 6/10.

Yep, they are good, but not the best. I was visiting Philly and a local friend recommended this place. I’ve had the Chicken cheesesteak adding some onions and bell peppers. I’ve also had some cheese fries. Tbh, the cheesesteak was good. No complaints. But it’s not special, as everyone claim it to be. My friend had the original cheesesteak and he had the same thing to add. It was definitely filling. The cheese fries were decent, not much to comment on. The prices seem reasonable, not too expensive. The people who work here are so discourteous, for some reason. It was my first time here and I was scouting the menu, and the employee was visibly upset because I was taking 5 more seconds to think. The way they talk also seems so nonchalant.

Went here because several people recommended it. Glad to have a cheesesteak in Philly, it was actually pretty good. Got it loaded (onions, bell peppers and mushrooms) with provolone. Line was to the door but had our food in 10 minutes. The artwork on the walls was creative and some were funny.

Cheesesteak is fine, but its bread crumbed onion rings are outstanding. If they serve Ranch sauce with the rings, then it will be perfect.

On our way back from New York, we stopped at Philadelphia for Philly cheesesteak and this place definitely delivered my craving. The cheez whiz was on point, the proper amount of meat and the bread was a perfect mix of chewy & soft. The onion ring did lack flavor but with cheesesteak and fountain drink, it came out okay. Even though we came really close to closing time, the staff definitely took care of our food and other issues (the soda fountain was out of syrup) properly. Honestly, if you're in the mood for Philly cheese steak this is a solid contender. Try it out it's definitely worth stopping by.

I would say this was the best Philly steak I’ve ever had. The place still miss some touch but the food is as good as it gets. The peppers are amazing. Don’t leave without the onion rings. Amazing.

First time eating a Philly Cheese steak from Philadelphia and it was good, Not the best I've ever had but it was worth the price

The cheesesteak was a bit bland, and the onion rings were too big and slimy. The bathroom is not the cleanest. The service was friendly though.

Once every few months I take a 2-hour drive up to Philadelphia, just to get a cheesesteak. Sonny's was a place recommended in a local pamphlet and mentioned it being a favorite place for locals. As with any popular sandwich shop in Philly, there was a long line when we arrived. Be prepared for a good 10-20 minute wait, just to order. I got mine "Sonny's way" with fried onions and wiz, because that's also MY WAY 😎 We only waited about 5-10 minutes or so for our food to be ready after we ordered. Be advised, seating is limited, but management did make a couple announcements for people to kindly eat and leave, and not linger. Our food was piping hot and melty. We got fries, which were nothing special, but that's not why we took the drive. My sandwich was very good. I was a little disappointed by the size, compared to other local places, but it was so packed with meat, that it filled my belly nicely. The star was the bread, and the hefty portion of steak. My only real complaint was the lack of seasoning on the actual meat. It needed salt. Still, I would go again, and maybe bring my own. Last thought, someone needs to invent a way to roll a sandwich in paper, that doesn't cause all the cheese to stick to it. That person will go down in history.

Now this is a cheesesteak! I was in the city for 2 days and this is the first place I tried. It was amazing and exactly what I was hoping for. The line was out of the door (that’s a good sign) and I was only in line for like 15 minutes max. Must try for that authentic experience.

I did a Google search, "best Philly cheese steak sandwiches in Philadelphia" Sonny's was at the top of the search list. It was also in walking distance from the Liberty Bell and independence hall. I didn't get to try every Philly cheese steak sandwich in Philadelphia, although it would be a worthy endeavor. So I can't guarantee that they are the best. But I can guarantee that they are the best I've ever had, and I'm a connoisseur of Philly cheese steak sandwiches.

Would absolutely come here again. The meat is very flavorful, the rolls are good and the service was awesome. We got a cheesesteak, loaded fries and mozzarella sticks. Everything had a great taste. I would definitely recommend this place.

Fantastic cheesesteak and fries. Really friendly people and a nice, no-frills space to eat inside. We loved it and will definitely go back.

Great place for authentic cheesesteaks. The beef was far better than the chicken. The staff was very friendly. Fountain drinks have free refills. Tax is included in the price. Took pictures of the update menu and prices as of 11/11/21

If you want to taste the authentic Philly cheese stake go to Sonny’s. The service is good, the food is to die for, and the ambient is cozy. I ordered the loaded Philly cheese steak for me and chicken fingers and frise for my kids. Everything was good and yummy. I will definitely come back to Sonny's.

  • 5/5 KC 3 years ago on Google
First authentic cheese steak and it was fantastic. The steak was succulent and tender while the melted cheese and veggies complimented the savory experience. The pricing falls far below the quality the food. The one drawback would be the outdoor seating, as it is a bit sub par but manageable.

Fave cheesesteak in Philly. I order the steak with American, onions and peppers. The bread is soft and overall, the their steaks are consistently delicious. Haven’t found a better steak in town.
