Def a western twist on traditional congee, which is supposed to be 'plain' and light on the stomach. But still, I enjoyed this variation: generous amount of toppings, rich flavors and spices, over a heartier grain base. I do wish the ratio gives you more congee than toppings though. I also liked the sesame milk tea, which wasn't too sweet!

Cool place with interesting Asian products, including Sichuan peppercorns and curry paste. I ordered the pork Bahn Mi and was very disappointed. Sad stale bread, flavors were ok, not much pork. Might go back to try the congee.

Today was my first time here. I had just left the Mexican restaurant next door due to rude service...when I walked into this place, I was greeted immediately. The Staff was kind and helpful. I ordered a chicken Banh MI and an Ice tea. This was the best Banh Mi sandwich that I have ever had. I like the vibe of this place and will definitely be back!

The spicy crunch congee is so flavorful! The whitefish sandwich was also really yummy. Which my friend had. The place is small but very "vibey." Super relaxing place to eat. The elderflower and ginger tea is super refreshing!

Tiny but super cute and friendly neighborhood cafe! Their “wake me up” congee with pork and broccoli is delicious and super filling. I had it in the height of the summer but I imagine it would be perfect winter comfort food as well. I also loooove the selection of international flavors aside from their in-house menu — they sell East and South Asian brands of chili sauce, sesame oil, vinegar, wasabi powder and other sauces and condiments, plus a variety of local Brooklyn food/drink brands. They even have shrimp chips 😮

So glad we went out of our way to stop in for breakfast! We shared the breakfast sandwich and congee. The spicy pork is amazing and the broccoli works really well! Both the bread and congee itself were fantastic too!

Great place to grab hot congee and drinks for a picnic in Herbert von King Park. Also, awesome selection of cooking stuff, ramen, spices, tea, Chinese sauces. Boba tea is a big plus! They have hot and cold drinks, and rice bowls, including breakfast bowls. Vegan, vegetarian, and meat options.

Very dirty and messy place. It’s like they stopped trying. Unfriendly staff. If you’re trying to get authentic Vietnamese Banh Mi this is not the place. Their “Banh mi” are miles away from actual Banh mi. It’s more like a sub with random ingredients. Disappointing, misleading and who puts broccoli in Banh mi’s?

I’m plant based, but their chicken sandwich is 100% worth eating meat.

I'm officially obsessed with this place - best sandwich I have had in a long time (pork sando). Can't wait to go back to try the congee. Shop is small and cozy with lots of Asian pantry staples for sale. Get the matcha lemonade!

The kimchi is so gingery, spicy and flavorful! I really enjoyed all the elements of the vegetarian congee. The inside market is cute but there is no indoor seating.

Ordered the chicken bahn mi and it wasn’t good. The top bread was super stale and the bottom was soggy. The chicken was well seasoned but idk it just was not good we had to throw it out. It was kinda disappointing 😕

I don't leave reviews often, but over the past few months the quality of the food has been wildly inconsistent at the Gates Ave location. Some days would serve congee at the perfect consistency and level of flavor, but most it would be watery and tasteless (I even took a covid test to confirm!). Ordering here is a dice roll on whether you get good food or service--never both. This place could be a hit, so I hope something changes very soon.

Dropped by for a breakfast sandwich (pork, broccoli, spice), will return to explore the rest of their menu. Also looks like a good store for certain groceries.

I don’t think they have a kitchen. Pretty tasteless sandwich. Lots of bread. Had to toss the bottom half- soggy. Not a traditional bahn mi by any stretch.

Very Americanized, hipster tasting congee. Congee lacks flavor so you’re given a ton of protein to make up for it. Weird that there’s broccoli in everything.

A different take on a Asian tradition dish. A lot of strong flavors going on with every bite and at times too much. I guess I'm old school and just like my congee simple (pork with thousand yr old egg, fish, seafood etc...) but I must say, their chicken sandwich was good and packed with flavor.

I've been coming here for years, and while sometimes the food is delicious, the quality is wildly inconsistent. I've come here too many times and have received hard, stale bread for my sandwich. At nearly 10 dollars for a breakfast sandwich with only one egg (and considering the inexpensive cost of bread in general), this is bit outlandish.

Fabulous Congee and Banh Mi.....and a great variety of quality products - Australian chai! They also kept my waterbottle for 2 weeks after I left it there, and I found it there yesterday! so kind!

There's something exhausting and all too familiar about oatmeal, and when you come for Maya Congee, that tiredness gets wiped away by the by quality and format of various porridge on the menu. With soft egg, kimchis and broccoli salad, stewed pork and espresso drinks, there's no shortage of touchpoints throughout your breakfast order, even if none of these things are typically ordered in your household, albeit at all. Can't recommend more strongly for those mornings when strength and stability are sought before the chores of the day begin.

The breakfast sandwich from here is hands down my favorite breakfast in all of brooklyn. No...in all of NYC! With a Vietnamese coffee on the side. This place is a must!! Service is also great.

Sure, it's not traditional congee, but it's really tasty and I love the variety! Got the wake me up which had pork egg and avocado and it was an incredibly filling brunch. I only wish I had some chili oil or chili crunch to add a bit of spice and flavor.

This place is special. The coffee is great, everyone who works here is a delight, and the congee will make you feel like a better version of yourself.

The chicken sandwich was great! The spicy crunch congee was good as well, as other reviews state it’s definitely different from other congee I’ve had but it makes for a good healthy lunch.

Delicious congee and boba. The spicy congee doesn’t lie (hot!) and is a generous portion, and the boba is the perfect sweetness with a generous amount of tapioca. Downside is outdoor seating only (humid during summer).

This is interpretational/health conscious-congee, please do not expect traditional congee. Congee mixed with quinoa(??), topped with broccoli, carrots, and pork..too many fixings, yet overall still lacked depth of flavor. Do not get me wrong, it was a pretty bowl and I do appreciate that there is a market within. I like the idea of a congee cafe, but this was unfortunately just not executed well enough to hit the mark.

A very hip and trendy vibe. I found this place on accident and was pleasantly surprised. The coffee was potent and the banh mi sandwich super flavorful. Will return.

I like the concept of comfort food + asian food bodega combo. It is a fun shop that has a lot to offer. The menu is unique and fun combinations. I tried a whitefish bahn mi and a congee. They were executed well, but I found them to be a bit too salty. Finally, the black sesame drink was good, but the seseme wasn't completely blended in. There were some flecks of sesame that made the drink a little grainy. Maybe a preference thing, but I prefer something more smooth. I like the concept, but just have some nitpicks on the execution.
