Hmm like the last review before me, it's also hard for me to recommend this place. Not because of the subject matter or the building itself, but because of the people working here and how miserable they are. I pointed at an item behind glass that I was showing my son and the guy said back up more. I was like 2 feet from the glass. Calm down. The architecture is simply amazing in this building. Displays here are hit and miss, some are very cool, some not so much. Not much interactive stuff, some that was, was broken. The gift shop here is very cool however. Mugs, shorts, food, expensive items, cheaper items, so much choice. Side note: why don't they call this Museum of the Native American or Museum of the Indigenous American. Indian is such a dated term, especially since they aren't from Indian. Anyways, hard to recommend this place, however it's free, so try it out if you want. Takes an 1 or 2 to see what you want. Washrooms are clean. Nice and clean in this building. 2/5. Follow me for more reviews, photos and great tips.

This free museum offers an exceptional modern review of the history and present state of Native Americans in north America. Don't be fooled by the building's neo roman appearance: the museum has several interactive displays, a special section for kids and a very colorful and friendly collection. Kids and adults can have a great time here while learning important parts of world history. Accessible to wheel chair and strollers. Restrooms are available inside. After this fascinating history lesson take a walk (have the kids run) around the nearby Battery park and it's new playground or grab a bite in the many local establishments.

I had been passing this Museum on my way to the city for years & finally out of the blue decided to go inside yesterday! I was so glad I did . I will be coming back again with comfortable shoes & time on my hands ! This building is huge & so much to see & learn . I can get lost in there. Only was able to see the second floor, 2 more floors to see in future. And yes it's a free museum & you have to go through security. I think it's a good thing , you just don't know these days ! They are open 364 days , Christmas Day is the only day they closed . If you are near Wall Street, and you love history then this is a must ! I had a remarkable time there . The stuff were very nice & helpful too.

This is a fantastic, and free, museum that explores both the past and present presence and contributions of indigenous peoples in the United States with a specific focus on this within the region. The building that the museum is in is absolutely stunning and the exhibits are wonderfully done, nuanced, and very well put together. Overall a great museum to do if maybe you have time to spend before you board the ferry to the Statue of Liberty Some reviews have mentioned security being overly harsh but I did not have that experience. The national archive has a branch in this building and as such there are your standard federal building security procedures. Just be polite and do as they say and you'll have no issue.

Great museum in which you learn lots of things. It's a huge building, very nice inside, the exhibit is limited but que good enough. You want to buy everything in the shop, every piece is so nice. And good to notice, entrance is free.

Most folks do not know that NYC has its own branch of the Smithsonian's Museum of the American Indian! It is located in the Old Custom House at Bowling Green close to South Ferry. Like all branches of the Smithsonian it is free. Yes, you have to climb the big stairs to get in and have to clear security, and wear masks, but those are small prices to pay for top quality exhibits which cover the Indians of South America, the USA and Canada. As expected, most of the collection covers the cultures of the United States. There is a special section for the Indian nations of New York State and always a section for modern artists. Objects displayed are placed in proper historical and cultural context. How many of you knew that many tribes we associate as being from the west actually were displaced from their eastern ancestral lands. There is a large gift shop with books, recordings, rugs, pottery, jewelry and other articles to meet all budgets. Everything there is native made! Be aware no food sold, and no parking available.

A well-managed, clean, exquisite museum. Highly recommended if you have an hour or two, or waiting for the ferry to bring you to the nearby islands :) The current exhibition by T.C. Cannon is beautiful and quite powerful. The best thing about it is that it’s FREE. You only need to have your belongings screened for security.

A thoughtful museum housing exhibits covering native peoples stretching across the Americas. It not only delves into the history of these people but of their current impacts and lives along with their contributions, sports, culture, and art. Well worth the visit and a free museum at that!

This place is free so it’s a great place to go If you are in lower Manhattan or battery park or bowing green area. I’ve been going to this place and I’m always sort of disappointed by this place. The building and inside architecturally amazing. The artifacts are good but it’s not necessarily laid out nicely. It’s a bit outdated and should be a lot more technology used. The people that work here always look like they hate working there for the officers that manage the metal detector to the security that walk around. This place just has bad energy since we’ve been going here. This is more for older kids, 12 and up is best. It’s free. You Probably just need an hour or two to Walk Through this place. I’m having a hard time recommending this place.

This museum is free! There is no wait to go in. We found a great exhibit about Shelley Niro and now she is my new favorite artist please check that exhibit is not going to disappoint you. They have an extensive collection of artifacts from different cultures around the world. Another interesting exhibit is the history of the Natives of New York! You may find some inspiration! In the gift shop they have a lot of options specially the beautiful jewelry!

Great experience here at the museum. There isn't much to complain about this FREE museum. No advance reservations required. You can enter onto the main first floor or the lower floor and must go through a security checkpoint: a walkthrough metal detector. There are lots of interesting exhibits throughout the museum. The main section covers the native american tribes throughout the north, central and south americas. Lots of great information and exhibits there. There is also another area that covers the native american history throughout New York state specifically...covering Niagara Falls, Manhattan, The Bronx and Long Island. Downstairs has a great interactive exhibit area. Although everyone could appreciate this area, I could see how kids would gravitate toward this area. Lots of interesting and relatable information here. The main rotunda area (along with one of the museum wings) is undergoing some renovations at this time. Huge gift shop with lots of items...clothes, jewelry, food and tons of trinkets. Also a cafe area with beverages and some food items. Easy public transportation...right in front of the Bowling Green (4/5) train station. Parking, as expected, is tough in the area. A bit easier on weekends (particularly on Sundays) where parking restrictions are NOT in effect.

The art is consistently astounding, and the building is gorgeous, but I wanted to write about the gift shop - would buy everything here if I could. Incredible jewelry, decorative art, ornaments, textiles, toys, books, pottery, etc in an incredible former banking hall-type space. Probably the prettiest retail experience in Lower Manhattan (besides the flower shop at the Tin Building)

If you’re anything like me, you filter your searches to sort by negative reviews rather than positive ones. I look for common threads among the negative reviews to determine if the reviewers are fickle or if there is a common denominator to the complaints. Some reviewers complained that security guards were brusque/aggressive, even maintaining that their behavior nullified any positive dividends they may have received from the museum itself. Others complained that although the museum was free, it contained very little in the form of ancient artifacts and was too small to even compare to other museums of this nature. I find these complaints to be invalid. Security guards are human beings just like we are. I am not saying that there are not one or two bad apples here and there, but if approached with courtesy and respect, often they will accommodate as best as they can while still performing their responsibilities. I don’t want to go into a tangent about security since I am posting this review to publicly thank someone who I believe to be an unsung hero, namely, Bob, as well as another museum employee by the name of Ivette. Bob is the Director of Visitor Services, at least I believe that is his title. When I informed Bob that I was a homeschooling mom with two autistic children, he went out of his way to speak to security guards about making accommodations for my children who might have otherwise been overwhelmed by the metal detectors. They were accommodating. Besides interacting with my daughters by showing them how to use various interactive exhibits, Bob essentially gave us a personal tour of the museum. He remained with us from the beginning to the end of the tour, only parting with us when we went to the gift shop. He was knowledgeable, personable and kind. He went above and beyond what others would do. It meant EVERYTHING to my husband, girls and I! Yvette was also kind, interacting with my daughters as well as informing us about the services the museum could provide for me, comparable to those of community schools, as a homeschooling parent. As for the artifacts only being contemporary, I saw one artifact that pre-dated Egyptian art. Now how’s that for ancient?!

One of the finest museums in the US. Their collection is so superb, you're left wondering how is the world did they get all this stuff! And that's part of the story. This is all stuff stolen from the Native American people. If for nothing else, then go there just to see how much was stolen from them! While there, you can also spare some minutes to marvel at the architecturally very rich building. Yes, the sculptures too. But the building is just... oh! The neighborhood is great too!

(Translated by Google) As a child, I, like many of my peers, was fond of the books of Fenimore Cooper, I loved watching films about Indians. I was interested in their culture, customs, I was impressed by the courage and nobility of their soldiers. Having learned that there is a museum of American Indians in New York, we decided to definitely visit it. The museum collection is quite extensive, it contains household items and culture of indigenous people of both North and South America. Clothes, weapons, household items, jewelry, many photographs telling about the life of Indian tribes are exhibited here. We liked everything very much. The museum has a shop selling souvenirs, including those made by the descendants of the first inhabitants of this content. I bought several souvenirs, now they remind me of a museum that I, a Soviet child, could not even dream of visiting.

Free admission is always a plus, especially for such a great museum! There's plenty of information but not so much that you feel overwhelmed, there are some interactive parts and even a couple short films. Worth dropping by the shop as they have goodies starting 5$ if you wanna keep a memory and support them!

Very nice building, central location, free admission, no waiting, just enter and enjoy They display traditional Native American art as well as paintings and sculptures etc. definitely recommend it. Two observations, 1- they don’t provide a map or any sort of website or app showing what is displayed. 2- The security staff is friendly however some of them making loud noise, laughing, yelling or screaming at each other, which is very distracting. Otherwise it’s a beautiful place.

What a delight. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit here. I can't believe it's free. There was a good modern exhibition as well as an excellent gallery that highlights all the indigenous peoples across the Americas. I was impressed with Crazy Horse's war jacket and other rare paraphernalia. The exhibits are well labelled with good maps and I learned a lot. The whole atmosphere is peaceful and respectful.

I would definitely recommend National Museum of the American Indian as one of the best places to visit in New York City. The museum is really big and beautiful. The museum contains lot of details regarding the American Indians. The museum of filled with lot of information and at the same time it is beautiful and enjoyable. In the first floor they have a dedicated area for children as well as adults for some interactive games. Second floor is filled with lot of artifacts related to the American Indian history. The place is not crowded, very calm and visually fabulous.

This was my first time to be here. The building was attracted my eyes when first time visited New York. Finally I found time to visit this museum this year. Go upstairs will be the entry, and the security will need to scan your bag. Go in the center of the building, you’ll see the amazing oval celing, and amazing paintings around it. And you’ll also see a lot of Native American culture in there, which I never seen before. The painting part of Native American is my favorite, their way to choose the color and the way to describe their story, very colorful and lively. Highly recommend bring your children to there, they will have more way to read the history of Native American.

I came here hoping to find someone that could give me some insights on the archives despite knowing they are closed on the weekend. I then spent several hours here exploring the exhibits unsure of quite what I might find. The truth is: all sorts of visual touchstones. Art from some far northern peoples (I’d become fascinated with the different seafaring First People tribes during a visit to Port aux Choix in NW Newfoundland), to a children’s exhibit on kayaking in the far north and different clothing of tribes there, to art of peoples all over North and South America. I was most enthralled to see pieces of Mississippian art and artifacts from my home region in the Deep South but second only to that were various pieces from the Seminole in the state of my birth.

The current America on New York is not just the way we see it today , it's much much more richer and older than the time when Christopher Columbus' ship found this 'new land'. You don't realize that until you go and visit this museum at the extreme tip of downtown , Manhattan

Great museum. I really like the exhibit the items were displayed in a very organized fashion by the Indian nation that they came from. I thought that was really a clever way to display the information. Also the building is truly magnificent. And the most great thing of all is that the price of admission is absolutely free. Because it's part of the Smithsonian, that is the way they do things.if you're visiting New York City I definitely recommend stopping and seeing this. You need about an hour and a half to two hours to see it.

This museum is part of Smithsonian so is free access. Beautiful building. Name of museum is a bit mis-leading for those thinking Indian means people in 48 states or thereabouts. This museum features materials from central and South America as well. It is more comprehensive than one might expect. I found it a fine treasure within walking distance of my hotel. Give it enough time so you can read the good educational materials in the exhibits. I was in too much of a hurry to go check out of my hotel and catch a ride home.

This is an amazing museum. It is completely free and you have to go through a bag check. The staff were all really friendly and one talked to me about what happened during the summer of 1779 in Long Island. There's an activity area for interactive exhibits as well as videos going over history. One thing that stuck out to me was the amount of places to sit. There were seating areas all over the place. So this is also a very good place to relax.

The Museum is free and the staff were polite and friendly. I had a great time learning about American Indians- their history and culture.❤️ I was emotional on how for them, serving in defense of the USA is an honor and duty, but the country and its people didn’t always reciprocate that service.😞

This is a fabulous and FREE museum very convenient to Battery Park. Located in a historic ornate building, they have great exhibits on both the American Indian and the building itself. If you go, make sure to read the building history in the center of the 2nd level and LOOK UP. It is a fabulously wonderful museum. NOTE: the incoming security is airport-level – be prepared.

Very Big building and it is free to visit. The front of the building is usually the meeting place for tour guides to start their tour with different companies. Warning ⚠️ there are other people standing outside trying to make you buy a ⛴ ferry ticket to see the Statue of Liberty ? but don’t fall for their tricks you can ride the Staten Island Ferry ⛴ for free and it passes by the Statue of Liberty. They are very aggressive but don’t look at them or y’all to them. Don’t ask them any Questions. If you have a question simply ask your own personal tour guide or you will be a Big tour Guide stand that have a ton free maps now he was super kind and helpful but the people that are selling the ferry tickets I didn’t look their way I totally ignored them like I didn’t even hear them speak a word. One guy was like sorry I thought you were a tourist but I see you are a New Yorker ? Yeah right he just wanted me to talk back I didn’t say a word I just kept on walking ‼️?‍♀️ ???

The outside alone is amazing! I didn’t get an opportunity to go inside this time, I was late for a dinner reservation. However, as you can see from the photos, it is one of the coolest buildings in New York. When you see the bull statue, it is directly across the street. Great architecture! You don’t want to miss the short trip across the street.

Classical, stately architecture for a museum that explains the customs and art of Native Americans. You can see everything from art and costumes to artifacts. There are some traditional early American art in the museum as well that decorates the ceilings. Very easy to get to via the bowling green station or the R, which is close by. Also the archive is apparently very worth exploring as well though I did not view it.

Extremely impressive free museum and should be at the top of your list if you're interested in history/art and need something to do without spending a fortune. If you've never visited the area, Battery Park is next door and the museum lives in the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House which is a historical treasure that has been historically preserved. The museum shares its space with the National Archives so be prepared for a higher than normal amount of security for a museum with metal detectors and x ray machines for bags. Easy to spend 1-2 hours without realizing it. There's even a small interactive family area/learning center that is geared more towards children but is still fantastic and enjoyable as an adult and was the highlight of the entire museum for me. Getting to experience how Native American Indians experienced life and how they hunted or trying to beat my best time for amount of time spent balancing a kayak. This is a must visit for the free price of admission and does not dissapoint!

It is a nice museum. Very interesting. I just didn’t like the security guards from the 1st level, the same people who are in the airports, arrogant and unkind. Otherwise the museum very informative and as always the architecture amazing. A lot of information for people in the Caribbean.

I had the pleasure of photographing a wedding at the Indiana State Museum on Leap Day 2020. I had been looking forward to photographing the wedding since my couple booked, with such a unique location choice for their reception. Indiana State Museum certainly did not disappoint. They did an incredible job with ensuring everything was well taken care of for my clients, including security to ensure nothing went awry during their reception. We were able to go behind the museum along the canal during sunset and capture some gorgeous portraits just the two of them. This was the perfect breather for my couple between traveling from the ceremony and starting their reception. The food was divine, and the night was magical. If you are a couple looking for a venue in Indianapolis for your wedding reception, I can't recommend Indiana State Museum highly enough!

This is a great and expensive museum centering around all things Indiana. From geology to recent celebrities hailing from the state, you get a great all around experience here. They also do a great job of setting up the exhibits so that both children and adults can appreciate the information. Plan for about two hours to go through everything. There is a relatively cheap underground parking garage right next door.

Very happy visit. Very clean. Sanitation stations well placed. Staff was super friendly. Exhibits were well taken care of. Can't say one thing or the other was preferred because the family had an overall great experience. Even got a parking voucher. Look forward to returning again in the near future. Great experience for all ages alike. Was very peaceful and not rushed at all even on a weekend day. Keep up the great work and the support to local artists was awesome. Will be visiting again soon. Loved the addictions exhibit.

The historic children's trai ride will be going as well, and not to mention the tea room with their wonderful food offerings and the breakfasts with Santa. There will also be a Daniel Tiger exhibit and breakfast. For even more fun enjoy a walk down the canal. There's underground parking that leads directly to the museum, a great gift shop filled with both Indiana themed merchandise, to cute gifts and stocking stuffers. And don't forget to get your picture taken with Santa or the giant Indiana obelisk.

If this museum were in any other city it would be one of the best museums around but since it's in New York a gets lost in the many other more famous museums. But this little museum is just as great and amazing as the other bigger ones it has all indigenous Indian art and artifacts from around the world. You'll be amazed how many different Indian tribes there are so had no idea there were so many. I've been to this museum about 5 times and it's one of my favorites and I've been to museums all over the world.

Very clean and quiet with employees throughout ensuring the museum is treated respectfully. There are various types of artworks from small drawings to large scale abstract pieces. As a Native American, I am very disappointed how little this museum is. There’s hundreds of Native American tribes in the U.S alone. Not a good experience, it is necessary to carry with your covid 19 vaccination certificate, otherwise you can't get into the exhibition. The crew was rude and non sympathetic at all. Me and my family stayed in the museum for 25 minutes at the most. If they want to promote the culture of the American Indian, with the team they had that day, they are doing wrong.

If you have school aged children this is the perfect museum. Very interactive. If not it is really broad in topic but very shallow on details. It is an overview of the tribes on both the American continents. I did not go with children and was underwhelmed. Now the building on the other hand was amazing. It was once a customs house. It is as grand as can be.

Enjoyable visit to the NAIM this week, which is fantastic for a free exhibition. Some very interesting pieces throughout all of the various halls and displays - Well worth visiting. Be aware - As this is a government building, the security is TSA-like and very thorough. Therefore, try to pack light as you will be asked to take off your belt, watch, empty everything out etc.

You can asked to front office for more detail about it, but for fact finding you must be find inside museum. In the center hall on 2nd floor after you are enter to building, its divided into three section that have a different history room, artefact, and story about it.

The National Museum of the American Indian in Manhattan stands as a testament to the rich and diverse tapestry of Indigenous cultures that have shaped the Americas for millennia. Nestled in the heart of the city, this museum offers a profound and immersive experience that invites visitors to explore the history, art, and contributions of Native American communities. From the moment you step inside, you're greeted by a sense of reverence for the cultures on display. The architecture itself, with its curves and lines inspired by natural forms, serves as a fitting introduction to the museum's focus on the interconnectedness of nature and human expression. The museum's collection is a testament to the breadth and depth of Native American creativity. Spanning centuries and encompassing various regions, it offers a nuanced view of the complexities within different tribal identities. From intricately beaded garments to exquisite pottery, each piece carries a story, a connection to traditions that have been passed down through generations. One of the museum's most compelling aspects is its commitment to telling the stories of Native peoples in their own voices. The exhibits are thoughtfully curated with input from Indigenous communities, ensuring an authentic portrayal that goes beyond stereotypes. This approach not only educates visitors but also fosters respect for the resilience and contributions of Native Americans. Beyond the exhibits, the museum hosts a range of programs that bring Indigenous cultures to life. From performances of traditional dances to discussions about contemporary issues faced by Native communities, the museum offers a dynamic platform for understanding the ongoing narrative of Native American lives. While the museum excels in many areas, some visitors have noted the need for additional interactive elements and more detailed context in some exhibits. However, the overall impact of the museum's mission is undeniable. It encourages visitors to reflect on the past, acknowledge the present, and consider the future of Native American communities. In a city brimming with cultural attractions, the National Museum of the American Indian stands out for its commitment to representation, respect, and education. It's a place where visitors can broaden their perspectives, challenge preconceptions, and gain a deeper appreciation for the rich tapestry of Indigenous cultures that continue to shape our world.

The National Museum of the American Indian in NYC is a cultural gem with a fascinating history of its own. Housed in the historic Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House, this museum beautifully blends architecture and heritage. The Beaux-Arts building itself, completed in 1907, is a masterpiece, adorned with intricate details and a grand rotunda. The museum's exhibitions, showcasing the rich and diverse cultures of Native peoples, are equally captivating. It's a five-star destination that not only educates but also inspires, both through its exhibits and the architectural grandeur that houses them. A must-visit for history buffs and culture enthusiasts alike.

Spectacular museum with the history of the American Indians and a self-critical and constructive vision of the subject. Many years of history, deception, involuntary displacement of entire communities. Highly recommended. Plus, it's free.

This museum is unbelievably good and a must visit for everyone! The way history is explained is so easy to understand but at the same time conveys all the important information. The collections are beautiful and insightful. And the most amazing thing is that it is free.

A very interesting museum dedicated to Indians. Not only North American Indians, but also many others from the South. A lot of handicrafts, tools, hunting weapons, traditional clothes and decorations. Part of the museum is also dedicated to the Indians of New York, people who also built and live in this city. Entry is free. We highly recommend this museum.

The museum collection covers Indians across the Americas documenting the extensive exchanges of goods and ideas long before the Europeans appeared. It highlights the ancient and ongoing inequities endured by the many Indian nations but also their contributions to modern America. Their stories are told through their artefacts - clothes. art, music, skills - demonstrating their wisdom, adaptability and resilience.

Today I visited this museum with my schoolchildren. The exhibition turned out to be really small; we walked around all the halls in about an hour. The children liked the playrooms on the first floor the most. I liked the building, beautiful architecture. There were few visitors, although admission was free. I expected more; I planned a three-hour visit, because the museum building is so huge! And the museum security is really not very friendly. But overall the impressions were good.
