Smaller museums can be a hit or miss depending on exhibits. The day I went to the New Museum, it was all misses. The entire building was pretty much filled with video installation art. It's a shame, because I do feel the building has enough space for the curators to fill it with mixture of exhibits that appeal to wider group of audience. The top floor has a nice view but the doors to outside were locked and the floor looked unfinished. At $18, it’s a steep price of admission, so be sure to check the website to see the exhibits appeal to you before stopping by.

New Museum is awesome! It has great exhibitions and very greatly done design shop with local design, great books and more. The only thing I wanted to see and it was closed was the sky room with the view, they told us it will be open the following day, but it was not.

This was a low-quality museum for the price paid. A handful of the docents were super sweet but the negative always weighs more and there were super judgmental docents that sadly I will not forget. While I am not an art expert of any kind, I visit museums from time to time when I travel. And this place was, overall, a joke. Lots of weird crap—some literally looked like trash. I mostly paid to see a collection of trash. The movie was cool though. Do better or make this place free!

To be honest, I love the museum very much, and for a very long time I was going to get specifically to this museum. The only inspiring place it's rooftop. Otherwise, all the exhibits and paintings that I saw made me deeply depressed, and I left after 10 minutes.I do not want to offend anyone and I think that creativity is wonderful. Ah, but I probably just didn't get it. The only thing that seemed to me that the people who created it and have some kind of mental disorder. I would not advise anyone to visit this place if you have a healthy mind.

Personally I am not a huge fan of Modern Art but the New Museum with its current exhibition of Grief and Grievance is different. Very interesting. Definitely worth checking out!

When you ask me why you love contemporary museums and modern and organic architectural design, this museum will be the title really. It is one of the contemporary architectural buildings you must visit in New York. It will give you the impression you want and will make you love contemporary and industrial design.

I enjoyed learning about a variety of contemporary female artists in the Judy Chicago exhibit. I particularly enjoyed the works from her holocaust series. Tickets were $20 ($16 for students), and as of 1/10/23, the sky room at the top is closed.

Visited here to observe the Faith Ringgold exhibit. The flow of people into the venue was organized and controlled. We really loved the exhibition! We did not know that Faith had such an extensive collection of extraordinary art. We were pleased that we were able to experience her creativity.

Honestly, I'd skip this one if I had the choice again. There were a couple cool gory pieces, but not a ton of art and a lot of was just video exhibits or art that didn't make any sense. It took maybe 30 minutes to go through 4 floors. The skyroom was cool though and had a nice view of the city. It's $18 per person so unless there's something specific that you know you want to see, save your time. Also, my husband was carrying a backpack and I had a decent sized purse as we were in NYC on vacation and were spending all day taking the subway and buses to get around. Halfway through the museum, he was told he could have his backpack but it had to be carried in his hand and not on his back/shoulder?? Yet I was able to keep my purse on my shoulder. Such a bizarre thing.

Unique place, the art that is being presented has a nice modern feel. However the use of the space within the building disappointed me. There is a lot of open space and the potential for more art pieces or exhibitions is there yet isn’t used. Both photos shown are closeups of different exhibitions that where held.

Great exhibition of Faith Ringgold. Museum is a rather badly designed place with very bad galleries and stairwells. Come see the art, despite the bad space.

Very recommended museum. The building is impressive for its shape (and view from the balconies at the 7th floor). Staff is super friendly and helpful. The exhibitions are very different from other places. There are in-depth expositions of two American, non-mainstream artists that fit very well with the current wave of diverse and inclusive art. It really supplements the museum offer in NYC. Something that will make you think. (Also nice: no entrance fee :) )

Great accommodation for people of all backgrounds. Nice staff and tickets are the only cost. Art students doing projects on herstory which is interesting. The side gallery is a bit confusing as the illustrations did not always match the artworks even though they are all pretty good.

I had a lovely time visiting the Judy Chicago exhibit. The range of works was stunning, as was the view from the top of the Museum. The staff were kind and helpful, and I felt truly immersed in the art. I was able to see all the museum had to offer and appreciate the works in a few hours. A great place to go for an spur of the moment trip, and if you enjoy contemporary art.

Definitely not a high rater for visiting New York City unless you are REALLY into modern art (and I mean super inaccessible modern art they showcase there). I didn't appreciate being followed around by the security guards after my mask fell off one of my ears one time for a short second. She aggressively told me to fix it, which I was doing, mumbled under her breath and shook her head at me, and then proceeded to follow me around. I wasn't really enjoying the museum before that but I was trying... But then I certainly wasn't interested afterward. I then saw one of them yell at an older gentleman not to drink some water in the lift. Just weird

Very interesting contemporary art museum with constantly rotating exhibitions highlighting a variety of artists and perspectives. Highlights include some live events such as a live organ performance while I was there. They also have a beautiful outdoor deck on the top floor with surround views of the city.

The New Museum"s exhibitions and programming has gotten so good over the last few years. Makes it worthwhile to be a member and see every new show. Currently there are 2 must-sees: Pepon Osorio (2nd fl) and Mire Lee (5th fl), and a wall piece by Wynnie Mynerva in the lobby.

Visiting the New Museum was AMAZING! This contemporary art haven in Manhattan impressed me not only with its stunning architecture but also with its commitment to showcasing emerging artists. The Sky Room on the 7th floor offers breathtaking views of the city which is perfect for pictures with cityscapes in the background. Love love love! Definitely worth the visit.

(Translated by Google) Museum designed by Sanaa in 2007. It was one of the architectural stops on a trip to New York. Aphasic and disappointing building compared to the photographs that portray it white and avanescent: in reality it is a series of stacked boxes covered with an expanded aluminum mesh with a very large mesh that lets (intra) see the underlying structure. My visit stopped at the bookshop. Went on a "Free Thursday" though don't entirely know why they were open. 4 floors were closed (3 preparing a new exhibition and 1 only open on weekends), so there was really only 1.5 floors to see. Some aspects were innovative, after all I was initially recommended to check this out by folks leading Apple's VR tour (who partnered with New Museum on creating that), but overall was a bit of a let down, likely driven by so much being closed.

(Translated by Google) The exterior of the building is unique and beautiful. It is the only art museum in New York that focuses only on contemporary art. If you want to experience young exhibitions, spaces and interiors, this is the place to visit. There is a theater in the basement where you can watch the video work. It also sells the biography of Masha Tucker, the founder of the New Museum, and it's interesting to read if you're interested in art. To be honest the exhibits were sparse and small during my visit (sep 2021) that had no real depth to them. It felt more like a multimedia gallery space than a museum. It’s true the roof deck has a great view, but the space up there is empty... no chairs, and a lost opportunity to have a nice cafe up there. If you have to spend the $18 to get in, I honestly would skip the new museum.

Cool building, beautiful view of the city from top floor, masks required but provided if you forget, very nice for pictures but the best part of the museum was that the exhibits and artwork had detailed descriptions! It provided background on the artist and context for the artwork which helped my understanding of the exhibits. Well curated

I’d recommend going on Thursday nights, when it’s donation-based entry from 7-9. The building and gift shop are really nice, and there’s a good view of the city from the top floor. The exhibits on display when I was there left a bit to be desired, but I’d give it another shot when some new work gets installed.

There are about 3-4 floors of a current exhibit. Because this museum isn’t super close to a tourist’s area - it’s not as busy as other museums near Times Square. Be sure to visit the 7th floor (if it’s open) outdoor semi wrap around patio. Stunning view.

  • 1/5 Stanley C. 3 years ago on Google
Severely underwhelming museum. There wasn’t enough material to go through for an hour and the building isn’t structured to provide enough flow between galleries. Whitney museum had the same number of floors and was better structured.

  • 4/5 Eduardo P. 4 years ago on Google
Went there earlier today, it was a very interesting visit. The whole building (which itself looks stunning from the outside) was basically a giant Hans Haacke exposition, and worth every penny. Speaking of which, while the entrance fee isn't particularly cheap (this is NYC, after all), it's less expensive than most NYC museums), with the caveat that, even though the building itself isn't small, the space dedicated to the art pieces felt smaller than other NYC modern art museums. Try to come on a Saturday or Sunday, otherwise you won't be able to visit the observation deck on the 7th floor.

Fantastic modern art. The exhibits were conceptual and many spoke to various social issues. The seventh floor outdoor space was fabulous as well. I really enjoyed the variety in terms of styles of art as well as various mediums. One of the highlights for me was the interactive walk through exhibit currently on the third floor. Be quick when going through it though - while it’s a cool place for selfies, each space is very small and you have to move through pretty quickly as it’s so popular. I say this because, unfortunately, the staff had to intervene and seemed annoyed at some of the hold ups caused by people stopping to take photos. The only downside to this museum in my opinion is the fact that it’s a bit disjointed in its layout - there is no clear way to move through the various spaces and it is easy to miss things. It is smaller than many other museums in Manhattan but that’s something I personally enjoyed. Overall, a cool experience.

The art work was great but a trigger warning would have been appreciated. Staff gave us a bit of a hard time. We walked in scanned our tickets. Gave me a hard time about not having my student ID. We saw some friends outside and when we told her we would step out to talk to them she said if we left we would not be allowed back in. Instead they came in to speak with us. Sometimes with these rules people have they really need a better understanding of why the rules are in place. Smh. Then scolded for taking the wrong stairs because we missed a sign on the door. Building was very clean and clear. I liked how the work was presented. Much to look at. Rooftop great for pictures. Would totally host an event on the top floor when things become safe for closer social interactions.

See it. Don’t miss Arthur Jafa’s amazing video installation, “Love Is the Message, The Message Is Death,” on the ground floor. I had unintentionally purchased the tickets for my friends and I for the previous Sunday instead of this past Sunday and realized right when we were walking up to the counter and I pulled up the ticket on my email. I was 100% prepared to have to turn back around and apologize profusely to my friends. Instead, the employees changed our ticket reservation around right there to the correct day and made sure we kept our student discount. Extremely helpful, and the manager knew just what to do! It was so lovely of them. The museum exhibit itself was amazing, being able to trace Faith Ringgold's body of work and career through time felt truly special, I'm so glad we were about to see three floors just dedicated to her and the things she has done. I felt that the spaces were set up well, with plenty of room for people to walk around each other and not crowd the art. My only wish is the placards were a little bigger because we all needed to wait turns for people to read them, as everyone was getting really close to them to read what they said. Overall a great experience, and I hope to come again for a new exhibit in the future!

Your experience will depend largely on the what is on exhibit at the time and your interest in contemporary art. The space itself is quite nice and the museum is fairly compact so this will be a relatively fast visit.

Just saw the Wangechi Mutu show before it closed and was truly inspired by the class of contemporary art available at New Museum. As an educator, artist, and student, I love the work they do. Same when I saw the Nari Ward show, the faith Ringgold show, or any of their triennials! Such great place to view art of zeitgeist!

This museum, when I visited, was featuring a particular artist's work across the various floors. You can go up the stairs all the way to the roof and see a number of visual things.

This is my fv museum in NYC, innovative and modern art through the eyes of amazing artists around the globe.

Unique experience. Not my cup of tea as museums go, but the highlight was actually the GIANT lime green elevator and the rooftop terrace with 360° views of the area. Current installations are quite bizarre and more cultural documentarys IMHO. I like going to museums with beautiful paintings and sculptures, but to each their own.

this has by far been the worst museum i’ve ever been to. the staff was unlike any other, they were rude and reluctant to answer any questions regarding the art, its meaning, and the curatorial decisions made at large. it was extremely disappointing to be policed in such a way that made this experience, which was 60$ for 2 people, unbearable. I will never again step foot in this building, it has been two times i have been here and been treated this way and i’m sure others will agree. the new museum is horrible and undemocratic at its core; because of the price, rules, and treatment of their patrons. if i could give 0 stars, i without a doubt would. DO NOT GO.

Great museum. A gem for contemporary art. It's an open space with galleries and a roof deck. This is one of my favorite museums in the city. There is currently a Pepón Osorio show that is exquisite and profound. It's unnerving and relatable for any diasporic community living in an urban setting, but especially powerful for any Caribbean, Puerto Rican, Dominican living in NYC. The museum is not afraid to show art and artists that may seem controversial. 5/5 highly recommend. Also, walking distance from great food and easily accessible by public transportation.

The museum is relatively small and can be toured in 1 hour. The rooftop view is pretty good and the “My Beating Heart” exhibit was very interesting.
