Despite several issues I give Sofreh restaurant five stars. Food quality is top-notch and almost the best Iranian restaurant in east coast. Prices are higher than expected. Cocktail menu is so unique and you definitely need to try. However, management team can be improved. Staff is not very friendly and they are super inflexible with even most common simple requests.

Sofreh didn’t impress me much. I was looking forward to dining here for the longest. I love Persian cuisine and finally had the opportunity to dine in Sofreh, a restaurant I have heard and read so much about. First impression, when we walked in we were a bit confused as there was no one available to greet us. We stood there looking confused, amidst other diners. It was very awkward, only after a while one of the waiter came to help us. The first look, the ambience felt a bit meh, almost confused. The restroom in contrast was full of characters. The weirdest part of the evening though was that our waitstaff kept changing to a point we didn’t even know who to call if we needed anything. After the mains, when someone cleared the plates, we asked him for the desserts menu but then we had to wait for another 10 minutes before someone else came and asked us if we would like to see the desserts menu. Then after another 5 minutes someone else came to take the order. However the Persian ice cream didn’t disappoint, it was by far the best thing on the menu. Overall the food was ok, I have had much better Persian food in NYC. For me and my friends, it was a one time experience.

Amazing place. We suggest you get reservations because there is always a good crowd there. The food is delicious and delicate and artistic and beautiful and subtle and robust. You will experience so many flavors. We had the half chicken 🐓 and the steak 🥩 and the Lamb 🐑. So many flavors. All the meat was tender and juicy just fall off the mouth type. The waitress was super knowledgeable and made great suggestions. If you want to try something different but comfort food this is the spot. The owner was there and spoke to us super friendly and kind and wanting for everyone to have a great time.

By far, one of the top restaurants that I’ve had in 2023. This was on my list for a while and I wish I came sooner. Everything about Sofreh is perfect - the waiting staff, the music, and the food! I’d highly recommend splitting the lamb shank amongst 2 people and trying out a few of the dips. You can’t really go wrong with anything on the menu. Looking forward to coming back soon!

Incredible food, everything we ordered was so delicious. The flavor, balance and the effort made to make everything on the plate matter and add value to the dish is remarkable. Bonus points for wonderful chat with the lovely owner/chef and she spent time to explain what we had ordered and the flavor profile. (I may have told her she’s a genius at least 4 times) Superlative experience. They change the menu seasonally, so have to revisit in spring. And we didn’t even get to look at the dessert menu. That saffron ice cream is calling me.

We have been to Sofreh a few times. Our first time was incredible (earlier in 2019) and everything we tried was amazing. Unfortunately, the last two times we have gone, the flavors weren’t the same and the main entree we got (Pomegranate Steak) was extremely bland. We have essentially had the same exact order every time we have gone and it’s just not the same. We informed the manager that evening, and he basically implied that the food was fine and that basically we didn’t know what we were talking about (said he had tried the food himself and knows that everything is cooked well) and didn’t validate our experience at all. The poor customer experience was really a bummer!

Fantastic dinner at Sofreh. I brought my boyfriend here for his birthday. They have an indoor/outdoor vibe, and the interior is simple but sleek. We ordered several small plates and split the main lamb dish. It’s a pretty veggie forward menu so can be good for everyone. Best things were the tahini fig salad, eggplant dip, and lamb of course. The waiter suggested the saffron rice to go with the lamb and they paired well together. Cocktails were all solid though nothing too special. Definitely get dessert!

Excellent service and dining environment. Must have reservation. The staff were attentive and noted our dietary restrictions. The restaurant is modern and has fun/quirky Iranian I assume film in the bathroom. Food wise was very disappointing to me. The only nice item was the eggplant dip which also wasn't that memorable. The zucchini fritter was also just ok. The disappointment was the ash stew and cauliflower steak. Both were super sour and acidic like other reviews noted. We asked what was used which was Persian lime. They definitely went too generous on that. Our gum was very sensitive trying to finish those dishes and didn't enjoy. Food wise I prefer Shiraz Kitchen in Chelsea for unique Iranian food. The same dishes tasted better there.

Delicious food and attentive, warm service in a minimal but inviting space. Highly recommend the eggplant dip and the tahdig. I wouldn’t miss those or the catch of the day. The lamb shank was also great and visually impressive. If I had it to do again I’d stick with cocktails instead of wine. Only thing I wouldn’t order again was the cake.

This wasn't just a meal. It was a whole adventure through one of the most incredible dining experiences I have had this year. I have dined at some exceptional restaurants this year in Philly, Fort Lauderdale, and NYC and I am having a tough time finding another restaurant that comes close to my experience at Sofreh. From the suggestions and guidance from our knowledgeable server to watching the executive chef finish performing last touches to the plates before offering them for service. What made the experience even better is that the staff, front of house and back of house, seemed like family which gave patrons an energy that matched the cuisine. But back to the kitchen as I was lucky enough to watch them work...I watched four people in the kitchen work in a tight space as if choreographed as they created magical dishes and flavors. The joy on the faces of the artists in the kitchen told me it was going to be a great experience because they were having a good time. It is rare to come across a place like this, with a front and back of house that made me want to put on an apron and go back to my days in a restaurant, Sofreh made me want to do just that. Today, most restaurants are chaotic without a sense of organization and the food suffers because of it - not at Sofreh. I will be back many times and intend to eat everything on the menu in the next few months. Also, the young crowd understands this is the spot and now I understand why it takes so long to get a reservation...we were some of the older people there but I stand undeterred. My generation needs to get out here and experience this amazing staff and this incomparable menu. Thank you all for a wonderful experience.

One of the hottest restaurants in Brooklyn, and we got a reservation. I thought maybe my expectation was too hight, but everyone was not too impressed. I had much better Persian / Iranian food. There was certainly something wrong with the service. They looked like they just had a big fight. This affected our dinner experience. If you really want to try it, I’d recommend the lamb shank. The lebanese wine is really good, and it goes well with it.

Without a doubt one of the beat restaurants in New York. The space is so lovely and comfortable. Service is absolutely top notch, with waitstaff who seemed just as excited about the food as we were. Oh, and the food. Everything we ordered was extraordinary. Must return soon to eat more.

It's really hard to get a reservation with short notice so we walked in and had dinner at the bar. I really enjoyed everything we had. I could have drowned in the chatted eggplant. The sheep's milk ricotta was super fresh. The ice cream sandwich with pistachio and rose petal is really delicious. My favorite was the mytake mushroom and the baby lettuce with dates. If you're the kind of person who likes the burnt rice at the bottom of the pan then order the tahdig. Next time I might get two orders. I love that this place feels as welcoming as going home to moms place on Sundays. It's homey and welcoming and the service is very attentive. You can get a table reservation if you’re willing to wait 3 to 4 weeks to get in but if you’re OK eating at the bar then you can drop in and just enjoy the ambience and the food. They even have a in the lower level which can be used for private party or large group event of 20 people or so.

This place was packed! I can only manage how it was before covid. We couldn't get a reservation or a table so we sat at the bar. The food 😋 We ordered the eggplant appetizer, lamb and duck for dinner with saffron rice and ice cream sandwich for dessert. Everything was flavorful and filling. The lamb was so tender it fell off the bone.

Very popular Persian restaurant in Brooklyn, and I’ve heard great things about them. However, I’m guessing the quality is inconsistent since me and my friends were disappointed. The food wasn’t amazing and both the lamb and chicken were pretty dry.

It is an exclusive sort of place and I believe one has to make reservations almost a month in advance. It is costly although the cocktails are priced reasonably. The preparations and the presentation was unique. We were expecting the usual middle eastern cuisine but it seems Persian cuisine is different. My son and daughter in law had been there earlier but for us it was our first exposure to Persian food. We had a unique dining experience.

Great and unique tastes. My favorites were the eggplant dip with the bread, steak kebab, sweet potato, and roasted pickled cauliflower (the appetizer). Pretty average / would not get again I thought were the salad, cauliflower steak main entree, and catch of the day. And, did not think that the saffron rice was worth the $8.

One of the most delicious dining experiences with very unique flavors and preparations. To try some amazing Persian food, it is worth the trip to Brooklyn. It's pretty far away from where many would look for excellent dining, but it is worth it A very busy spot, so make sure you make reservations. Bartenders are great, and the staff is well versed in the flavors and can help you choose what to order. The lamb was incredible.

amazing food, extraordinary service, and lovely ambience. we loved our dining experience at Sofreh, the back patio is especially cute (and very quiet for an intimate dinner). we ordered the eggplant dip, tahini & date salad, kofta, and lamb, then ended our meal with the ice cream sandwich and baklava. everything was delicious, but the standouts were the eggplant dip, tahini salad, lamb, and ice cream. you won’t go wrong here, everything is phenomenal. I highly recommend snagging a reservation!

Sofreh was a good experience overall. The ambient is clean, with minimalist decor, but could improve. It feels a little too crowded and not much to see or feel. The food was very tasty, the eggplant with whey yogurt deep was a very good start, and the lamb shank was superb. The sweet & sour meatballs were extremely acidic, with not much sweet in them until you reach the meatball core, which was not to my liking. The star of the meal was the traditional persian ice cream. The color, the taste, the smoothness, everything was correct in all senses. I enjoyed my time at Sofreh and you probably will too.

Don’t really need to elaborate too much here because I think a lot of the other reviews hit it pretty well. Across the board, the food is very good, and they have a variety of dishes you won’t find anywhere else. They have a nice variety of apps (had some eggplant dip and cauliflower) which all seemed enticing. The entrees too were good - got the lamb shank, beef stew, and duck all prepared in traditional Persian ways. Once again, unless you go to the few Persian places around, you won’t get these. So to recap - food was good - best Persian I’ve had? No, but definitely very good. I think I would prefer Ravagh in NYC vs. here from a food perspective. Now for the reasons that sadly bring this place down a bit: only one piece of bread included with dips, rice not included with entrees (honestly might be what rattled me the most), and small portions for high prices. I won’t necessarily ding them too much for the lackluster service because we were seated outside but our table felt like an afterthought. Would I return? No. Am I glad I tried it? Maybe. I love Persian food but the one statement constantly that comes around is that it’s one cuisine that really can’t be replicated in a restaurant setting. I’ve reviewed other Persian restaurants (in the Northern Virginia area) that I find far superior from a food and service aspect. At those places, you definitely feel more like you’ve entered the home of a Persian family, something you don’t get here.

I’m Persian and when I typically go to Persian restaurants it can’t even come close to Persian home cooking. Sofreh feels like home. Every dish is bursting with Flavors and you can tell was made with time and and attention to detail. Highly recommend the eggplant dip and ending your meal with the saffron and pistachio ice cream

After wanting to try Sofreh since it opened, we finally made it here a week ago. Everything looked incredible and we couldn't make up our minds so we just ordered a ton of food knowing we'd have leftovers to go. We began with the eggplant & whey dip, roasted cauliflower, herb kofteh, and the feta & herb flatbread. Next up was the half chicken, mejdool date & lentil rice, and a side of tahdig. And to round out the night, we got the rose custard. Each dish was fantastic! If I had to choose a couple of favorites, they would be the roasted cauliflower and the rose custard. The service was also attentive and friendly and the atmosphere was enjoyable. Oh, and the leftovers held up well so we got to enjoy the night all over again. Too bad it's a schlep for us to get here from upper Manhattan. Still, we'll make an effort to get back before too long because there are so many other dishes to try!

We went to Sofreh for an anniversary date night. All the dishes were delicious and flavorful- lamb, rice, tahdig, eggplant dip, tahini salad and meatballs. Was told upfront we had a 2 hour limit and how the ordering/service worked. Appreciated the transparency and recommendations. I was excited to come here and will be coming back soon!

Extremely small proportions for high prices. while they have good meat, the extremely tangy sauces they prepare with tomato and overkill makes this place an unfortunate miss. Look for more authentic places. This is no Persian food - it is a sour and miniature bastardization.

From the moment the doors were opened by Mr.Amir Alikhani and he greeted us with his warm smile and kind, welcoming words, we knew we were in for a truly special experience. Nasim, the chef and owner is so gracious and lovely. She came over to us and welcomed us to her restaurant. She even was so kind to sign my copy of her beautiful book at our table. She is an awe-inspiring Iranian woman and I am so proud of her achievements and felt so lucky to finally meet her. It means so much to me as an Iranian, to see such a beautiful restaurant representing my culture and cuisine exist in New York. Every single person working at the restaurant that we encountered was wonderful. The hostess, our server, the manager, the chef, the whole staff was incredible. The staff is attentive, considerate and every single course was timed perfectly to our table. The entire experience was literal perfection from start to finish. Every drink we ordered was delicious and refreshing. Every bite of food was a symphony of flavors and textures that were indescribable. Truly a special restaurant and truly an experience I highly recommend you have for yourself. I had to write a review because for the reviews I read that said the food was just ok or the service was not on point or that staff was rude. I had to see for myself and it could not be further from the truth. I am speechless at the night we just had and I will never forget this amazing experience. Sofreh transported me to another world, to the memories I have of Iran and my family and I am so happy to have had this night with the best company and the best food I've ever had in any restaurant. Seriously. The restaurant is a work of art...every single detail is so well thought out. It is a labor of love and you can see it as soon as you walk in. The music, the art on the walls, the written words, the decor, the ambiance, the food and drink are all so beautiful and well executed. You can taste and feel the love that is Sofreh. Thank you for one of the most special evenings we have ever experienced! ❤️

Excellent and delicious! NYC is full of restaurants and so it’s hard to offer new dining experiences, Sofreh manages to do so with elegance and authenticity. Persian food is not something Americans come across often, and we’re lucky to have a place like Sofreh to expand our palates. The menu is seasonal and carefully constructed, the staff is attentive , professional yet relaxed. Treat yourself to one of their unique flavored sodas, I prefer the sour cherry. Vegetarian options abound, this is my third time dining in and each time something new and lovely shows up. Dining out is still a special occasion for me, reserved for special and personal celebrations, and not a common occurrence as It seems to be for many. Sofreh provides all the elements to properly appreciate those special moments.

Literally every dish is incredible. All the food is so full of flavor and creative, an exciting modern take on traditional Persian dishes. Cocktails are a highlight. Seating can be a bit tight for groups bigger than 4 - would recommend limiting to this size. Service was a big drawback when they first opened but they have definitely worked out the kinks and it was an amazing experience from start to finish. I would eat here every day if i could. There is really no place like it in NYC. Don't miss: - Cauliflower - all the dips with house-baked bread - tahdig (crispy rice) - persian ice cream sandwich

The food here was so delicious and aromatic, it’s my first time eating Persian and I was really impressed. There were 4 of us who shared a variety of items: pomegranate feta salad with an extra bread, herb kofteh, saffron rice, half chicken and 2 lamb shank. This was more than enough food. The highlights were the feta salad, this was definitely my favorite and the bread and the half chicken. I didn’t find the rice that interesting, personally and I liked the chicken better than the lamb but the lamb was incredibly tender and a sizable portion. It took a little effort to get a reservation on a Friday night but our experience made it totally worth it.

We ordered the eggplant and whey dip, grilled carrots & yogurt, beet & feta salad, fresh fish, and pomegranate beef ribeye (with the Persian ice cream sandwich for dessert). Bite after bite, every dish was delicious. I would recommend everything, including the offer for leftover burnt rice. The environment is also really nice, bright with sunlight, and welcoming. A win all around.

My favorite takeout spot in the neighborhood! The feta and herbs was very tasty but my favorite dish was the Ghormeh Sabzi with rice. I was also surprised with how well my leftovers from last night tasted for lunch this morning. Make sure to get a cocktail as well. I had the Sekanjebin martini which was very refreshing for a hot summer day.

This whole experience was delightful. We just tried two of the cocktails. I ordered the Bahar Bitter, a perfect combination of taste and “strength.” It gave me such a nice buzz for the night. We started with the eggplant dip and the watermelon & feta salad. The dip was delicious, and the texture and freshness of that watermelon was unique. We ordered the three rice alternatives they offered, some bread, and three main dishes. The pomegranate ribeye was mouth-watering. The half-chicken and its ginger apricot sauce made for the perfect flavor, texture, and moisture. The catch of the day was really good, too, and that stewed herb & tamarind sauce was memorable. For desserts, we tried the rice pudding, the butternut squash halves, and the Persian ice cream. They were all delicious, but the halva butternut squash might not be for everyone. The ice cream was firm, making it even more satisfying to enjoy every scoop you would get. We were a party of five, and we had a reservation for Sofreh on a Wednesday evening. The place was bustling, so I definitely recommend making a reservation before visiting.

I really hoped their foods to be great, but it wasn’t really that good. And the server didn’t kindly explain the foods. The ice cream, which was meant to be an ice cream sandwich, was a bit hard like it stayed in the fridge for a while. The eggplant dip was good. Others were mediocre. It’s so sad that my first Iranian restaurant experience went like this. Hope next time would be better.

Been meaning to come here for years, and it lived up to the hype when we went for my birthday. Everything we had (sweet and sour meatball, roasted cauliflower, shiraz style salad, lamb shank, smoked eggplant) was delicious, but the star was the lamb shank that I still think about and the saffron, rosewater and pistachio ice cream cake. Perfect spot to sit outside (not on the street) with nice weather. Bring friends so you can try a lot of things!

A beautiful experience. We booked our table long in advance and it was definitely worth the wait! From the beginning to the end it was a song of flavors ! Everything was cooked perfectly and delicious, from the tahdig to the vegetable stew to the pistachio and rose ice cream. With its perfect decor, it was a wonderful trip to the Middle East in an evening. Very reasonably priced for the quality.

I have a thing for exposed beams, so right of bat I was impressed with the ambiance and look of the place. This is a good place for a date night. The friendly staff are also incredibly knowledgeable about their menu. I recommend the Koofteh as an appetizer, which is essentially a tasty meatball with nuts inside of it. The Persian herb stew with lentils was a blend of perfect seasoning and was only outdone by the duck entre which comes with a side of duck (breast with a side of dark meat!). You should get a side of rice to complete your meal, and dabble in the unique cocktail list. Overall, may be one of the best dinner restaurants in Brooklyn.

I get upset that this restaurant does not have a Michelin star. It’s the best restaurant on Flatbush and in prospect heights. It brings Persian food to a new level, you feel like your grandmother made the food but your grandmother is a Michelin star chef. My Persian friends say this is the best Persian restaurant in the United States. I highly recommend the Lamb Shank, Cauliflower and Rib Eye.

Great food and service. Learned that the owner herself is in the kitchen preparing dishes. Definitely on the top list for Persian cooking. Also, i have been in many restaurants but I have never seen the restrooms with projector showing old Iranian movies..pretty cool and creative!

My meal last night was incredible! Best takeout I have had in a long time. The drinks to go are also great...my favorite is the watermelon mezcal cocktail

Excellent food, fantastic ambiance, and great hospitality! The food is delicious, simple, and clean. They focus on homemade recipes and it brought me back many childhood memories. The best Persian restaurant that I have tried in North Americas, so far. Explore as many food/cocktails as possible as each has its own concept.

First time trying Persian cuisine and it was a very special experience. I was seated immediately in a beautifully white washed space with exposed wooden beams overhead. My server was warm, made great recommendations and was very pleasant. I had a watermelon cocktail, the roasted eggplant starter served with warm crusty chewy bread. The flavors! The eggplant was spiced and complex. I had the date salad with a delightful blend of flavors, textures. Lamb shank stole the show though, perfectly paired with a plate of pickles

Wow!!! This place absolutely deserves the hype. Shockingly good food and drinks - the ribeye was particularly noteworthy, as I usually refuse to order steak in restaurants, as they rarely match what I can make at home. This was an exception! The tahdig, eggplant dip and lamb were other standouts. Efficient service, nice atmosphere. A bit pricey but not inaccessible, and in any case, definitely worth it for the occasional splurge.

Thank you Sofreh for a wonderful experience. Excellent Persian food. The eggplant dip is a must. The lamb and Asheh Reshteh were excellent. Persian ice cream was perfect. They have outdoor seating, non alcoholic drinks and cocktails.

This was a fantastic restaurant with a beautiful new take on Persian cooking. Traditional spices and dishes served with a modern twist. Under the watchful eye of owner it is a lively, welcoming atmosphere without pretension. Worth the trip from NYC or anywhere. You'll get an eyeful and a taste sensation with every mouthful.

Wonderful food in a lovely space (we sat downstairs), attentive waiter who noticed that my father had double tipped - the gratuity was already included as we were a big party and he tipped on top of that - and chased him to the curb to let him know that, and that he would be refunding the extra tip. Who does that? Really impressed.

Unbelievable Persian food. Fantastic bar program that keeps the theme alive. Small appetizer and entree selection but they're each special. Highly recommend the ribeye and lamb. Everything is well cooked and the service is lovely.

We had a really outstanding experience at Sofreh. We love Persian food but haven't quite found an authentic experience where you can eat Persian foods that taste like they're made at home. Sofreh delivered this beautifully! The menu was so perfectly constructed to capture the essence of Persian culture and the flavors melded together very nicely. The chef introduces unique flavors like tahini, tamarind and chili so effortlessly and though these are not traditional "Persian flavors" they compliment the dishes very well. She even stopped by our table and gave us lots of interesting insight into the construction of the menu and inspiration for the unique new flavors. The classic dishes like the herb and beef stew (ghorme sabzi) and the bean and noodle soup (aash reshte) were executed to perfection. Even the more simple appetizers like the freshly made barbari bread with feta spread and the Shirazi salad were full of flavor. We really enjoyed our experience and will definitely be going back!

Authentic Persian food with a very well crafted menu. The food tastes great in here and is somewhat modern representation of some traditional Persian dishes. Their cocktail menu, however, is rather new and crafted with some unique Persian ingredients.

I don't think you can get better Persian cooking at a restaurant. Sophisticated, varied, light. I could have eaten all night!

Very nice place! Tasty food and wine. Wear formal clothes so that you would not look awkward and out-of-place like I did. ?

Favorite Persian spot on the Eastern side of the U.S. Delicious food and excellent ambiance. In true 2020 form, you will see tons of Insta posts of inside the bathrooms, so I guess it's accurate to write even the bathrooms have atmosphere? Hmm. :D

I'd been wanting to come here since the rave reviews in the New Yorker and NYT over a year ago. It was well worth the wait and exceeded my expectations. Nasim Alikhani, the owner, greeted everyone that walked in through the door as if we were coming to her house for dinner. The originality of the cocktails hinted at the surprises to come. I've eaten around the world and cook a lot myself and yet was surprised by many of the flavors in the food we ordered. Prices can seem high but the servings are quite generous and some of the dishes (like the amazing duck) are more than enough for two people to share.

Elevated Persian cuisine with bold and well balanced, but not overcomplicated, flavors. Highly recommend all the appetizers for sharing, including the yogurt dip, the eggplant dip, and the salad with tahini and dates. Save room for dessert and order the tradition Persian ice cream with saffron, rose water and pistachio. The dishes are well portioned perfect for sharing. Plus leek decor, lively ambience and a lovely backyard.

Lovely experience at Sofreh. Persian food in a modern setting! Some of the dishes were underwhelming but overall very happy we gave it a shot. Do not expect a traditional Iranian restaurant simply because that’s not what they’re going for. Dishes and drinks have so many Persian elements but they are not your grandma’s recipe. Whatever you order don’t miss the lamb shank! Sweet & sour meatball and their bread are top notch! I wish Aash/noodle stew was more thoroughly cooked.

What an experience! After being warmly greeted by the owner and her brother, we were seated in a lovely back garden. We were a little nonplussed when someone was seated right next to us, despite there being plenty of other tables—but they soon got cold and went inside. (There are space heaters but they weren’t enough for these folks). We started with cocktails, had lots of appetizers, and then the waiter steered us to the steak main course. Everything was delicious. The steak was steakhouse quality but accented with Persian flavors. The salad was surprisingly spicy. The eggplant dip was to die for. And the dessert was delicious. Highly recommended.

This restaurant is hands down the best Persian restaurant in New York. Sofreh brings a novel point of view to traditional flavors.

What can I say? I'm in love. Yes, with this restaurant! And the owner. And the food. And the vibe. And everything about it! Always a great time here, filled with delicious memories! My go to is the steak (kabob torsh) and catch of the day. Kashk e bademjoon is also a staple!! The drinks menu is super interesting, especially if you have enough Iranian roots to lol at the cocktail names!! Will always return here; typically w new friends to blow their (open) minds.
