This church is like a museum. It contains beautiful stained glass windows depicting Christianity and some well maintained Baroque paintings, including one by Anthony van Dyck. Highly recommended for the art.

St. Michael's Church is a late Gothic style church in the city centre of Ghent. This is a large church that has limited visitation hours during winter months (October to April) of 2-5pm on Saturdays only. The church is more accessible from 1 April to the end of September when it is supposedly open from Monday to Saturday (2-5pm). With limited opening times, you'll have to target afternoon visits between April and the end of September or be lucky to be around on Saturday afternoons the rest of the year. Otherwise, you can only walk around and look at the church's Gothic style exterior. Historical documents suggests the churches history stems back to at least the early 12th century with small parish to St. Michael being located at this location. The present Gothic style building was started in 1440. Multiple phases of constructions spaced over ensuing centuries as well as 17th century reconstructions provide us with the St. Michael's Church that you can see today. Interestingly, notice the tower at the front of the church isn't complete. It just sort of stops midway up and is capped off with a flat roof supposedly put here in the early 19th century. In the end, St. Michael's is an imposing building in the city of Ghent but might be difficult for you to enter to see its interior due to limited opening times during much of the year. If this is the case, you can have a look from the St. Michael's Bridge and the small square in front of the church for a few minutes, then continue on with other sightseeing endeavours in Ghent.

One of the great churches in Gent. The tower has never been done until today while it is supposed be 130 meters high according to the initial design. Inside are various paintings, relics and artifacts for the visitors. Opens at 14.00 and not so crowded

It is a Gothic-style Catholic church built on the site of the 11th century Chapel of St Michael. Construction of the present church began in the 13th century and continued until the 18th century. The church was one of the three towers of the city of Ghent, along with St Bavon's Cathedral and the city hall. It was supposed to be 134 metres high, but the west tower was never completed. It is currently only 24 metres high. The church has a rich interior with works of art and an organ from the 19th century.

It is a trip to thirteen century. It is free entry, and if you are lucky there is a kind gentleman that will explain you what ever you ask and also he plays the organ sometimes. I was lucky enough to catch it! There are some valuable pieces of gold and silver as crowns , cups. My favorite part is in the end of the building there are some walls hand painted with gold and red. If you are not even religious it gives you the chance to breath peace and also meditate there.

This city has 2 beautiful and stunning cathedrals and this is one of them, whilst not as grand as Saint Nicholas Cathedral, it is still amazing. For Ghent to have 2 such cathedrals of this magnitude is phenomenal. Make sure to check opening times, some days it opens well into the afternoon

Wow this church is one of the most beautiful I have been in. The church itself is huge and around the outside are rooms with art, sculptures and more.

Overall very impressed with gent. The town centre and architecture is amazing. Very touristy. Lots of fine buildings and Cafe. Boat trip worth it. Priced like a tourist place as you'd expect. But plenty to see for free. Well worth a visit.

Their mussels with fries are exceptional! I suggest to order it with their beer of the house. The place is famous to have hundreds of different beers though, so feel free to choose any

Peaceful, gorgeous church with lots of history. Lucky to be there as it began raining which made a lovely sound all around the church while we sat and enjoyed the moment

I've visited a fair number of European churches/cathedrals to appreciate the architecture and history. This stands out as my favorite in Ghent. The exposed brick gives it such a unique flair!

The Church of St. Michael the Archangel is located on the Sint-Michielsplein in Ghent, Belgium. A chapel dedicated to Archangel Michael was built on this site in the 12th century. She burned twice and was restored twice. By the early 15th century, the church had fallen into disrepair and was too small for the sprawling city. In 1440, construction began on a new Gothic church. The main nave and transept were built in the early 1500s, but in the second half of the 16th century, construction work almost stopped due to the unrest associated with the beginning of the Reformation. The construction of the church continued in 1623 - a choir with an ambulatory and a crown of chapels were built, made in the late Gothic style. Due to financial problems, the western tower was only partially rebuilt, and only after 1828 was it provided with a flat roof. At the beginning of the 20th century, the western portal was restored, and in 1967 the restoration of the crown of the chapels began. The church houses many paintings and sculptures by famous masters, including the work of Anthony van Dyck "The Crucifixion" (1628-1630).

Not as famous as Ghent Cathedral or Saint Nicolas church, but as much worth the visit. Hosting an original painting by Van Dyck: Golgota

Amazing exterior, unfortunately I couldn't go inside, probably because there were fallen stones pieces. The church really needs restoration of the facade.
