I definitely recommend this place, the service is excellent, the place is nice ( at night you dinner with candles) and the food is super tasty! Last year I came with my friend and it was a good experience but definitely is a better experience wit your couple! This year I came with my wife because I wanted to repeat this delicious food and the place still perfect! The Goulash is the best and all the Hungarian dishes I’ ve tried here are really good options! This year my selection was perfect! Look at the photos and show them to the service guy! He will know what to serve you!

This is a great spot for traditional Hungarian food (and wine) in the Jewish Quarter. Highly recommend making a reservation online because the restaurant is always packed. (Note they don't take in person bookings but there seemed to be space at the bar for walk ins.) Service was efficient and we appreciated that the table was booked for 2 hours and we were not rushed which really allowed us to enjoy our 2 course meal. We loved the chicken paprikash and the veal stew with dumplings. Delicious food, great value in a really relaxed setting.

Very good food, especially the goulash soup and the roasted bone marrow with toasted bread. We received from the house a portion of paste made from skin duck (really delicious). Decent prices. We didn't have a reservation, it's almost always full, but we managed to find a sit at the bar and eat there. Good coffee and beer. Helpful and nice staff. Must visit!

This place definitely deserves its reputation as one of the best traditional food restaurants in the area. The service was excellent, the food is exquisite, and the selection of food and drinks is great. Make sure to make a reservation at least a day in advance if you're aiming for a specific time since the place is very popular. We'll visit again the next time we're in Budapest.

Food was very delicious. But they scam people. I ordered main course and beer. Once beer came, they brought a starter. Waitress said, as your meal will take some time, this is for your. Duck paste and bread. I assumed, it supposed to be for free. In many countries around the world, many restaurants do have free starter practice. I wasn't informed that I have to pay for it. I was thinking of leaving tips and then I saw the bill with 2 additional items, that was my starters +around 2000 to the bill. So, nah, no tips. And usually I don't leave reviews. But I travelled a lot, and never was scammed this way.

Delicious food and nice ambiance! We tried the bone marrow and Hungarian pancake as starters. Both were great! Also has the whole trout, veal paprikash, and lentil & duck stew. Everything was quite tasty and priced reasonably. Service was good as well!

Good place with quite small menu. The dishes are not very big, but they are delicious! Soups are absolutely incredible, and prices are average for the city centre. The design of the restaurant is good, very pleasant and convenient. If you're nearby and you want a quick, tasty and affordable food - I'd recommend to come here. However, i do not think that i will come specially to this place. Its pleasant, but not very unique.

This was my first Hungarian food experience and it didn’t disappoint. It’s fine dining at an affordable price. Had my first-ever bone marrow and veal here (veal stew with bacon-wrapped sour cream latkes). So so good. I went early (5pm), otherwise I think you need a reservation.

We expected better tasting goulash and paprikash from this place. It was generally okay but would go back. Overall, very overrated and other places with much better food.

One of the best restaurants in Budapest to eat typical Hungarian kitchen. Very satisfied with service & food as well! I recommend to ask for “bread dumplings”. Two main dishes with two large drinks = paid 9.420 HUF / 25€.

Absolutely delicious classic Hungarian food in the city. The meat in the goulash and paprikas was very tender and soft, and the taste of both main dishes was incredible. They also have Czech Pilsner beer, which fits perfectly with the cuisine. We had to wait to be seated though, so a reservation is definitely recommended mainly during dinner time. Definitely worth visiting.

Delicious food! The place is comfortable, the food is great and the staff are nice and quick. Location is easy to find. I suggest reserving a spot in advance. Very good Hungarian food, at good price. 3 people ate 3 main courses, 1 appetizer, 3 beers and 1 bottle of water for 60€.

Just came out from this place and I can't wait to write a review. This is the best meal I have in Budapest. Right next to the synagogue. The place is cutely decorated. The service is 5/5! Super friendly and kind. The duck paste appetizer and bread were complimentary served. I asked for tap water and they served a whole pitcher. I ordered the Rooster testicle and cockscomb stew. So flavorful. The testicles and cockscomb are cooked to perfection, very tender and not dry. The pickled bell pepper is a bit spicy. (I guess that's the pitcher of water is for 😂) The portion is large and very filling. I can only finish 1/3 of the food. The environment is also nice. Love the decoration and background music played. Can't wait to go back (once I finish digesting all the amazing food 😂)!

Dined at the establishment twice in three days.. one of the best meals I’ve ever had in my life. Not only is the traditional Hungarian food amazing that brings back memories, but they have a modern twist on many dishes. If this restaurant was in New York City or London, it would win a Michelin star

It was really nice place with delicious food. I was shocked how fast they prepared everything. I’ve ordered Lamb Paprikash with Hungarian Noodles on Butter and it’s worth the price. You should come here and spend nice time. There is also food for vegetarians and they also will be happy :)

Great food and atmosphere. We were a group of 5 and had a really great dinner experience. We each got a different dish and everything tasted excellent and homemade. The Hungarian wines were great as well. Service was a little on the slower side but no complaints here. We'd definitely come back if we're in budapest again.

This place was recommended by free walking tour guide. She said this is her favorite around the area and I get to try the famous Hungarian cuisine here. She was absolutely right! The food was amazing and I love the bistro atmosphere. Especially love the veal and potato soup. Highly recommended 🙌

We tried this cozy restaurant because we heard the goulasch was amazing and it did not disappoint us! We ended up coming back a second time during out stay here in Budapest. We are four friends and both times we came here we ordered a decent quantity of food for a very moderate price (we spent 25€ in 4 people). Loved the location and the staff was very friendly and attentive to our needs. Thank you for making our trip special 💗

Perfect place for a dinner or late lunch in Budapest! The food was delicious and the staff extremely friendly. It was a 10/10 experience! Price wise I think it was good if you think of the quality of the food, service etc. a bit more expensive than other places around but I would definitely recommend going there! Venison stew with bread dumplings was amazing BUT if you can’t decide what to have then veal paprikash is your must try!

Really tasty, authentic Hungarian food. The bone marrow and the goulash soup are legend. Our food came pretty quick despite a fully booked restaurant so a reservation is definitely recommended. Waiters are super nice. In the stew the meat was not perfectly cooked and we let the staff know. They canceled the dish from our bill, what is more, we received duck fat from the house. Top notch customer service!!!

Recommended by some Hungarian friends, it didn’t let me down at all! The waiter was very caring and quick in responding to our needs. He explained dishes and gave suggestions depending on our tastes. I would say that one of their strengths are the desserts! One better than the others, we tried 3 of them and they were all amazing. The lamb as well was perfectly cooked and left us speechless. Highly recommended!

Came here for lunch. Didn’t need a reservation just walked in. Ordered bone marrow to start which was good. With a lot of garlic. The mains we ordered the veal stew. This was nice and tender. The side of cheese thing wrapped in bacon was also good. Would have been much better if the food was hot. It came out lukewarm. The beef stew was not as good as the veal. The meat dry. And the side was a bit bland. Service and vibe and interior were fine. But can do more with the food I think.

Great overall experience, we appreciated the atmosphere and the friendliness of the waiter. The food is also great and the portion more than generous. (I'd advice starter + main course for real hungry ones) I guess it's a very good experience of local cuisine.

If your goal is to have the best local Hungarian food, this is the place. The atmosphere inside the restaurant is really nice and filled with locals. I had a few things that were out of the ordinary… roasted bone marrow with toast, which tasted absolutely incredible. I also had a stew with rooster testicles and cockscomb with pickles and this stew was so delicious, I love trying new things and who would have thought that a stew like this could carry so much flavor and have a non-local sold! I will definitely come back here.

I had dinner, I ordered one starter (Hungarian pancake with meat) and the goulash soup, they were both delicious, also the desert was good and generous. Great variety of home made lemonades and nice wine list. I enjoyed my dinner very much

Rather an underwhelming experience. Firstly we have been told they are fully booked and only have spaces at the bar, only to find out half of the restaurant was empty, with only few customers inside. We ordered Veal & Venison Goulashes and both were disappointing - the meat was extremely dry and just not pleasant. I am giving it 3 stars as the waitress who served us was polite and the starter (Jewish Eggs) as well as Homemade Lemonade were okay.

Stylish retro bar and restaurant with real authentic local Hungarian dishes served with a smile and in style. Well organized and professionally run bar and kitchen with super motivated staff. All dishes look really great. I can recommend the Alföldi gulyásleves / Hungarian Goulash soup 'Alföldi' Style paired with a Pilsener Urquell, Zwack Unicum as a digestive followed with a sweet dessert to round up your full experience with the Hungarian cuisine. I will come and dine in again for sure….

We had a lemonade and an ice tea to start us off, both were much needed on such a hot day. Luckily they came it large tumblers so we could cool ourselves down. We had a Hungarian Goulash starter which was nice, before moving onto a mains, which were a steak and beef stew. I had the stew and major food envy and the steak looked and tasted fantastic and I would highly recommend it. The beef stew was good, but a little too salty and heavy for me. The staff were generally quite pleasant.

The restaurant is in a very nice location, and the atmosphere is lovely. Lots of food options, vegan dishes available as well. The menu contained detailed information about allergens as well. We got the pickle selection and the hungarian pancakes (highly recommend!) for starters, and mushroom paprikas and knuckle stew, and palinkas lemonade; everything was delicious! Portion size is quite big, and the prices are decent. Overall very nice experience.

Thumbs up for serving creativity, but the goulash was simply average. I could see that some of the beef portions had been cooked for far longer than others. The dumplings accompanying the veal paprikash were quite bland. Aside from that, the experience was rather pleasant; the personnel were exceptionally kind and helpful, and the decor of the establishment was modern and appealing.

Wow. Just simply wow. How did this place come in at 4.4?! It should be a 5 at least. The food was the most amazing eaten the entire trip. The staff was super warm and friendly. You could tell they enjoyed being at work and joked around. The goulash was the best I had eaten over three days of eating it. If you can eat in only ONE place in all of Budapest, this needs to be it.

2023: Highly rated and hearty Hungarian meals. It seems booking is a smart move and a necessity for groups. The Beef Stew in Red Wine with Homemade Egg Barley is a great meal to fill the stomach with, perfectly cooked tender beef, balanced with barley to soak up the sauces. There's a 12% service fee that should be addressed, but it's still one of the more affordable value meals to be had in the city.

Gettó Gulyás pays attention to the big picture as well as the details. From the moment I walked in, I was delighted by the cozy yet airy atmosphere that felt contemporary chic with a hint of tradition. The kitchen and wait staff are very attentive; the service felt personal. And the food? Delectable. I haven’t had stuffed cabbage since a Hungarian family reunion years ago and this dish elevated that memory to fine cuisine. Juicy, nicely spiced, and very well presented, the stuffed cabbage with sour cream and fresh sourdough bread was a delight to consume. I look forward to trying more of the menu.

Here you'll get delicious food for pretty little money. If you want to try some traditional Hungarian food, this is the place to be. Strong recommendations are the Gulyás Soup and the Chicken Paprika. The atmosphere is also very cozy and welcoming. The staff and drinks were also amazing. If you want to have a table here in the evening you definitely should book a table in advance.

Right in the heart of jewish quarter of Budapest is this great spot for traditional food. We came here for dinner and we instantly liked the look of this place. Although it was just at the edge of the evening, the restaurant was quite crowded, so I would recommend a reservation. The staff was very nice and we got some delicious bread as an appetizer. The food we ordered was really, really yummy, and after a long cold day of touring the city we enjoyed this hearty meal very much!

What a wonderful lunch we had yesterday for our group of 8 people from Spain. The waiter who served us did an amazing job. We came here as a recommendation from our Airbnb host, who told us she recommends it because of the warm hospitality, kindness, and the delicious homey style cooking which was evident when we dined in. The place is cozy and you will need a reservation. But overall, we will definitely come back again whenever we visit Budapest.

Not good. Being Hungarian I grow up on this food. Service is rather average. My Italian friends in town said food in Budapest is amazing everywhere but here. No card payment possible. It's simple a tourist place shame

Overrated goulash, not the best in the city for sure. However, paprikash and desserts were decent. A bit expensive, very tightly in the evenings, better to book in advance.

Tasty roast bone marrow on toast to start, which I'd never had before, and lamb paprikas with butter noodles for the delicious main. So much flavour, and cubes of lamb that simply pulled apart with a fork. Lucky to get a table without a reservation around 8pm on Wednesday, as it was very busy, which might explain why the staff seemed a bit harassed.

What a great dinner we had at Gettó Gulyás! Superb starters (we tried the mushroom based crèpe and some other bits), and even better mains (we went for lamb and beef paprikash). All combined with a local, very smooth white wine (Irsai Oliver). All staff were very friendly and attentive. They recommended us a sponge cake for dessert, which really impressed us. All in all totally recommended!

Cozy little restaurant in the Jewish quarter. The food is delicious and very tasty. We had the sturgeon and the veal paprikash both were great, for starter we had the bone marrow which was a nice experience on its own. For dessert we had the curd cheese dumplings. Reservations should be made at least one day in advance as there is no way of getting a table on the same day. Should not be missed on a visit to Budapest!

Good service. Modern environment to try some Hungarian food. Service was good, waiter spoke great English. I went around 11:30 — somewhat busy, but was able to be seated immediately. If you do have to wait though, the restaurant allows you to sit at the bar until the table is ready. Would recommend. Portions and food were great. Reasonable prices. Roughly $25 for a large beer, starter, and main dish. Recommend trying the bone marrow starter! Something different, but surprisingly tasty.

Our favorite place to eat in Budapest. I came 3 days in a row. Delicious food and friendly atmosphere. I loved it. Thank you guys for your kind service. I will come back soon for sure.

This is a lively place. I wish I could spend more time here. Their stews were very tasty. I also had my best goulash at this place. Don't miss out their pavlova!

Although it is a very famous restaurant the plates are just bland. It’s ok to eat here if you are hungry but most probably you will enjoy more a Burger King dish. Nothing special. Don’t even try it

Amazing Goulash. Staff is very professional and polite. The restaurant is located in a nice old neighborhood. Packed with guests.

  • 1/5 G. W. 2 years ago on Google
Unfortunately very poor, boring and even cold food. This goes for the main courses as well for side dishes. Hard to understand why - because the location is nice. Pálinka seems to be chosen from the low price quality of discounter shops. Prices for such bad quality are much to high…annoying!

Friendly staff, great food and nice ambiance. We tried to go to this restaurant every night for the weekend, and it was always fully booked... and with good reason! Finally went for lunch and we were not disappointed. Server was very friendly and recommended great wine, we got an amuse bouche that was full of flavour. Entrées were amazing, kudos for the hungarian pancake! Very big servings, so be ready for it. Definetely a must try while in Budapest :)

Everything we had was great, goulash, pancakes with mushrooms, and especially the main course (chicken with goat cheese). Also we got a little starter on the house, which was a nice gesture. The staff speaks english well, and they were friendly. I reccomend making a reservation!

It îs not a fancy restaurant but the food is onest, traditional hungarian... and plenty of it. Not to mention the taste. Being more like a neighbourhood, family run, restaurant it is saught by The turists despite his non central location but more for it's delicious range of gulyases, deserts and flavoured palinka as well for the cozy athmosphere. The stuff is nice, attentive and good English speakers. Good for them!

The food, service and ambiance was all really good at this place. Had gulyas soup and veil stew as well as homemade cheeseballs for dessert all were delicious. Definitely recommend.

Usually i don’t give 5 stars. But in this case everything was almost perfect. Very Good and welcoming. We didn’t wait long for nothing. Even for the dessert, they asked us if we can wait bc it needs time for preparation. Prices also very acceptable. If you are in Budapest you absolutely need to come here.

First time trying a Hungarian cuisine. So don’t have a frame of reference. But the food was not really something special. Not bad at all but no wow like food. Staff was so welcoming and the place was filled with tourists. So popular apparently. You better to reserve a table before your visit if planing to go on a weekend.

  • 4/5 Aline K. 1 year ago on Google
The first Hungarian place I tried. It’s good, but not the best. Everything was nice, but I didn’t go crazy over them. The gulyas was ordinary, I really liked the stroganoff which had pickles in it and the beef stew with the side of the pasta that looks like cabbage. The staff was friendly and they offered complimentary appetizers. There were many tourists in the restaurant and no locals. Overall good.

  • 4/5 Steve T. 1 year ago on Google
Went here for dinner. Two bottles of wine and the 3 appetizers and three mains was about 45USD per person. It was a good experience the staff was nice and the food was good. I will say it was slightly more expensive than I found other food in Budapest

Very nice place with very good food. I would definitely recommend reserving a table as the first night we went there, they were completely booked and we couldn’t get a table and when we tried to get a reservation for the next day, there was only very a limited amount of tables left to reserve for like 6.30 PM - so DEFINITELY make a reservation and do it ahead of time, the place is popular and they deserve it! The food was really good and the staff was very nice. They have a couple of vegetarian options as well. Had a very pleasant dinner there!

I enjoyed my time in this popular place. I was lucky to get a place without waiting (one of the last ones at the bar) and I was very well taken care of by the staff. The waitress was very polite and recommend me a good wine for my lamb paprikash. The food was mild but tasty. Portion big enough for my taste. Atmosphere was relax despite the full place.

  • 5/5 Andrea N. 1 year ago on Google
Beautiful place to try local dishes. A few vegetarian options available including a potato soup, a stuffed bell peppers dish (photo) and a warm beetroot salad with Greece cheese (photo). Nice environment and great service. It gets crowded at lunchtime.

It’s an amazing place and atmosphere. Elegant but also cozy and friendly environment. The dishes were amazing but a minor note for the venison, it was a bit dry and not juicy while the sauce a bit too thick. However, it was an amazing experience and very typical food! Highly recommend! We would definitely come back. PS: We spent 50€ in 2 and we took a goulash to share, 2 main dishes, pickles, and 2 lemonades of 500ml.

  • 5/5 Cynthia P. 9 months ago on Google
Amazing restaurant. I got the recommendation from a local in Budapest. The lamb paprikash is amazing, and it comes with egg noodles(?). The waiters are also really friendly and nice. I also tried the "Jewish" eggs and lemonade. Both tastes great as well. Highly recommended.

I had an amazing experience at Gettó Gulyás! The server was super funny and pleasant, and even managed to get me and my wife in without a reservation. The food was absolutely delicious - we tried several dishes and each one was better than the last. And of course, we couldn't leave without trying the Palinka - it was the perfect way to end the meal. The atmosphere of the restaurant was also great - it had a cozy and welcoming vibe that made us feel right at home. Overall, I would highly recommend Gettó Gulyás to anyone looking for a great meal in the Jewish quarter of Budapest. I would definitely return in a heartbeat!

Best food in town. In cosy and unpretentious atmosphere. Order, eat, and relish. Homemade gorgeous food. Eastern European taste of 120 years ago. Lovey, delicious 😋, a must-go.

What a SUPERB dinner, the goulash was okay, nothing amazing, but was yummier with the chilly sauce. The bone marrow toast was delish, so rich, loved the confit garlic addition, made it that much more delicious. The chicken paprikash was fresh, a little under seasoned but nothing their homemade chilly couldn’t fix, the pork knuckle and potatoes was also very umami, very prominent pork flavor notes with depths of flavor. The wine was delicious, a little dessert wine, first time I tried the a palinka and that was very strong!! Their fruit brandy ain’t messing around. We had two lemonades that were massive but also got the sparkling water purely for the gimmick of the water dispenser! We loved our experience and our waiter, he was the best!!! So kind, so welcoming and warm, hospitality at its finest

We really wanted to try some traditional Hungarian food which is why we decided to visit this restaurant. We ordered some homemade juices; peach and cherry, which were very tasty. We had Goulash and Hungarian pancakes for starters. The Goulash was simply delicious and we enjoyed the bread that came with it but I have to say that we were really surprised by the pancakes that we found delectable. The filling was incredibly good and well-seasoned. Both dishes really opened up our appetite. We only ordered one main dish which was the Beef stew with egg barley. The meat was really tender but the sauce was too salty for us. It was our first time trying egg barley and unfortunately, we were not too fond of it.

The location was classy, but very informal. Candles, plants, wooden tables and industrial furnishing really worked well together. The chicken breast with the potato dumpling was really tasty and tender. Some 20 mins passed between the moment of the order and the serving of the food, but the service lived up to the expectations of the place.

Overall a nice experience. The service was great, but it was very hot inside even though it was quite a cool night outside. The bone marrow starter was delicious. The beef stew was OK but the beef was not as soft as it should have been and there was very little gravy so it was a bit dry. The portions are big, we had two starters, one stew and pickles to share between two people and we still couldn't finish it.

Popular with great reviews for a reason. Lovely modern restaurant serving authentic local dishes and quite reasonably priced! A great variety of Hungarian wines to enjoy and they pair well with the food options. If the weather is nice, the tables along the sidewalk are great. Hard to go wrong here with any food/drink choices. Definitely stop by when in the Jewish Quarter/District Seven.

We had been meaning to reserve a table here for a while and considered not bothering as I thought it might be a bit over-touristy. I was completely wrong. Excellent stews. Excellent service. Excellent prices. Excellent venue. Everything was perfect. Just be sure to reserve a table for an evening sitting. Lots of people turned away at the door in the 5 minutes I was hanging around outside. Will definitely return.

We were here after 20 o’clock when the restaurant was still very busy. Appreciated that we got seated even without reservation. The music was unfortunately too loud and the staff were super busy so sometimes their notice could be limited. The food was tasty. Soup was nice and my main dish, the stewed beef, was very tender and had a gentle touch of very subtle spicy flavoring, which i loved it. I tried my first floating island here and had a great impression on it. The toilets is simply divided from metal walls, which was a bit disturbing to me.

Nice restaurant located in the Jewish quarter that serves hungarian dishes for a reasonable price. Everything tasted good, I recommend going here for dinner for the cozy atmosphere. Definitely make a reservation before coming even when you're alone because it's always full

Very nice restaurant with a great atmosphere! I got the Chicken Paprikash (my first time eating Hungarian food), and I was definitely expecting the egg noodles to be a bit more noodle-y and a bit less scrambled eggs. Nonetheless, the chicken was very well prepared and the sauce tasted delicious. Just bear in mind that if you want noodles you should try getting something else. It is also listed under stews but I wouldn’t call it a stew. However, the menu is extensive so don’t worry! Vegetarian options also available.

Great spot for traditional Hungarian food in Budapest. It's very popular, so make a reservation if you can, otherwise arrive early or be prepared to wait. Service was excellent - our server was friendly and helpful, and recommended great dishes.
