Really not sure how to rate this place. The good point is the location. Right by the Danube and the bridge is on your doorstep. We had a balcony with a beautiful bridge view. The room was OK, clean enough as long as you didn't move things. Shower a bit tight but everything in the room worked. There was 1 member of staff on reception who was helpful and nice but other than that they didn't even raise the head to say hello when you come in. Don't rely on them to order taxis either. The place is quirky in layout but I actually like that. I love hotels with a bit of character and this place really could be fabulous. Clean a bit more/better and give reception staff a lesson in how to greet people.

The room was larger than I would expect for a three star hotel. Everything was provided in accordance with the star rating, and the room was light and airy. Air-con unit in room which also had large double windows. Bed comfortable. The hotel is early 20th century and a lovely building. All areas were clean and tidy. I have dropped a star in the rating because the check-in procedure took longer than it needed to have done. Coffee/tea vending machine in reception provided half a cup for €1.00 - otherwise a good overall experience.

Bad quality hotel. The stairs in the stairway are broken! The personnel Is not particularly helpful. Breakfast is on another building half a kilometer away, even though the photos on the site show a nice breakfast room on the top of the building.

Great hotel. Understated entrance. Staff great. Was amazed at how the building seemed to incorporate private apartments with hotel rooms. Apx 30m from the Danube on the edge of the old town.

Don't know why people go to a budget hotel then give a bad review if you want top rated pay for a posh hotel,my honest opinion is it is a great hotel very central really nice and helpful staff on reception.so ok the rooms are basic but so what most people on city breaks only use the hotel to sleep in and shower most of the time you should be out and about exploring.

Perfect location. Not super modern, but it is functional. Don't recommend to stay there during the winter. Heating is not working, hotel is using just air conditioning and it wasn't enough. Also we didn't have warm water (which you really need when the temperature outside is up to - 10°C). Receptionist was open to solve the situation, thankfully.

The room was specious & nice shower. Supposed to have cofee & tea maker- we had to ask so they gave us a kattle & cups Garbage in toilet was not cleared- full from f previous guest Mattresses was sunken & too soft but had a great night sleep Great Wi fi Stuff was very nice The room had windows to the street but it was noise proof. The hotel has a free luggage room All & all we really enjoyed our stay and recommend it 🙂

We visited the hotel during October, while the weather was cold outside. The room had no heating at the moment because as we were told the temperature was high enough,in order to keep it off(11°C). The room had different facilities for cooling and heating, the A/C was working (for cooling) but the radiator wasn't. Other than that the staff was polite and helpful and the room was clean.

Very good hotel. Right in the city centre and easy access to public transport. Rooms very spacious neat and clean with comfortable beds and even river danube just a few steps away. I would definitely recommend this hotel and would love to stay here again

Avoid this hotel at all costs. The rooms and hallways were dark, dingy, and smelled strongly of cigarette smoke. Mold in shower, peeling paint on walls. This is completely mislabeled as a three-star hotel, it felt like a scam.

If you want to experience an 8K horror in real life, this is the place to go. Staff was very uninterested to explain anything. Hotel is the worst I have ever seen in my entire life. Rooms smelled and it was unbearable and I didn’t sleep. Bathroom smelled. The way to our room was with an incredible scary elevator and stairs where with no lights. Did my self a favour and booked another hotel. Avoid like plague this place. Yes, the location may be nice , but it’s not worth it!

Does not deserve 3 stars. We stayed for 2 nights in 2 rooms, both rooms were without the heating. Also, there was some huge garbage pile inside the hotel yard. Although the location is good, for the price you pay - way overrated.

It’s a very basic hotel in an old building, but a very good location to explore centre. You get what you pay, price/performance is actually not bad at all. The room was large, windows were facing side street, so there was not much noise. There is a 3 hour max parking lot under the bridge just across the street, so you need to look for a parking garage (not cheap) instead.

Brilliant location in the Pest side of Budapest! However, the praise stops there. Hotel entrance and corridors very rundown. Our room was just off the courtyard which was dingy and creepy put us on edge. Rooms was basic, bed was not too bad however aircon, shower and lamps were broken. Towels and bedding was not changed over our 4 day stay. However, the hotel is cheap and if you are not planning on spending a lot of time here then it is not to bad. A 2 stars is generous however, definitely not a 3 star rating which is its official rating.

Its ever doesn’t deserve one star! The building is so old! There is bo elevator. The room is so so old، the beds are the worst thing ever! On booking it seems ok, but on reality it’s bad. I had to move to another hotel, the staff were helpful and helped me to get part of my money

Amazing location (close to the center). Pretty good prices also if you reserve it early wonderful prices. But most importantly the employees are extremely polite. We asked to leave our bags to visit the city more easily and they said no problem. Just stayed here for a night and I'm satisfied.

Great central location. Rooms on the basic side, especially mattress, but plows great and nothing too uncomfortable. Shower tim a bit rusty but overall clean. Simply cannot complain for the price I paid. Reception staff friendly and helpful. Great for a 2-day stay.

having read all the reviews - After we have booked !! we carried on - it is something that has been left in the communist era- so yes it’s clean(ish) in the room we were given but basically a standard double bed - want to make tea you can rent a kettle, lino floors, no soap or anything in the bathroom- we left and found a nicer hotel! i think hostel would be better desctiption- if you want Budapest in a great location on a budget then it’s perfect but if you want more from your hotel then look around - it’s an old building based on galleries but could with clearing up from the pigeons!!!

The room was clean and warm, the hotel is located very good and the price to value is great. Keep in mind this is a 3-star hotel and overall I think it deserves a 5 stars review if you’re looking for a cheap stay in Budapest.

The location is amazing right next to the white bridge. Rooms are very basic, no kettle in the room. Beds are hard and low to the ground. Didn't have much of a view from the room, no balcony. Staff are friendly didn't have much interaction with them. Only stayed a couple of nights as was exploring the city. Suitable for budget travellers.

Very good location and nice old building, but be prepared that rooms are not the cleanest (dust under bed) and some things might not be working. The price is good, so if you are not too demanding and you go there just to spend the night, it is a good place for a short stay.

Location is the main attraction for this hotel. Rooms are extremely basic. Small fridge in room. No hair dryer. Air conditioning hap hazard, no hot water for part of our stay. When we arrived room was very clean but at no stage during our 4 day stay was room cleaned or towels changed. However, when we requested clean towels, reception did provide them. As a place to put your head down after exploring the beautiful city of Budapest the hotel is tolerable. On the positive, it is located near the bars and restaurants. The staff are friendly. Would I stay here again. No. A couple of extra euro will get you better accommodation.

Horrible, horrible, stay away from this hotel!! The room was filthy and it smelled like someone has been smoking for a week straight, and it looked veryyy creepy! Staff very unpleasant and rude. I will not recommend at all.

To start on a high - the location of the hotel is fantastic, right near the Danube, attractions and public transport. On the downside... Our bathroom roof and the filter in the air fan was covered in black mould.... like COVERED. The curtains on both windows did not cover the windows, fellow guests could see right in, one of the curtains was almost completely detached from it's railing. Would you like some dry or clean towels or room cleaning after a few days? - sure! But only for a fee! The funniest part was reading the guest directory in the room, "There is a buffet breakfast available for a fee" & "The hotel receptionist will provide you with the wifi details on check in" I called the receptionist once I'd arrived in the room to enquire about these and was told "No buffet! Come down to the reception - the wifi password to too long to read over the phone!" Down the hallway, through the pigeon nest/trash bag courtyard, down the elevator, down some more stairs and through another hallway to the reception... the password was the name of the hotel as one word. Not so much annoying as hilarious. Alas City Hotel Matyas has fallen far from it's time as "2011 Tripadvisor recommended hotel", the faded sticker proudly displayed on the reception door has unfortunately lost it's relevancy.

The location was the only thing great about this hotel. One of the beds was very uncomfortable, small and looked like improvised. Air conditioner was very weak. Neither the room or bathroom didn't have any slippers.

First time experiences that kind of elevator, if only the room heater works, I would give a much better ratings

The best part about this hotel is it's location, but the rooms were smelly and bathroom is extremely small. The staff of the hotel at the reception were not kind, we had to ask a thing or favour in a begging type of way.

Top location, but I recommend choosing a room with a view to the bridge. The rooms are cheap, but dont have extras and look old-fashioned.

Great location on the center of everything. Simple, nice rooms, kind staff. Not something exceptional but, overall, great for its price.

The hotel is perfectly located, it is old historical building and these are the main advantages of the place. Everything that can be necessary is around. The hotel is old and need more renovation, but generally it is good for tourists: rooms are ok for 3 stars, price is normal, staff is very friendly and helpful. I like it and wish your property only good times and prosperity!) Hello from Odesa, Ukraine!

Great location, nice concierges, cheap prices, only one con is that the housekeeping didn't vacuum well during our stay, and we stayed there for 7 nights. The woman at the reception desk was very helpful and nice. Good quality and price match.

We have reserved a room for two days for a month ago but there had been a delay for our flight so we arrived Hotel the second day. the person's behaviour at the reception desk was so bad. When we arrived at the desk he put a list on the desk and told us to find and mark our names on the list. We could not find our names and he told us to call booking com, because it is not his problem. We asked him second time to check again and he said he can't. The saddest thing is that he didn't ask our names and didn t check our passports. My Sister Got angry and then he checked the lists and found our names. That's why I gave one star. The Hotel is in the centre of Budapest. Everything was good with the Hotel.

This is a very central hotel right in the heart of the old town. Be aware that there are 79 stairs to the reception desk and no lift.. Not for the frail. Room was good sized no air con or fridge which was a shame. Staff were very friendly and helpful Room was quiet even with the busy streets near by. The location forgives the tiredness of the decor

One star hotel portraying as three stars. No room cleaning service available, person at front desk told to put the dustbins outside the room and someone will take care of it. Asked me to bring the dirty towels at the reception and he will change them. Bed mattress is in such condition that you lay in the bed for a while and you can feel the coils. Furniture is all worn out. Lamp is in front of the tv, need to turn off the lamp to watch tv else you will see the reflection of the lamp. This is just disgusting.

Horrible!!!! Stakkars away! Awfull old trashy hotel, broken beds, bad food, blææ... noway!

  • 2/5 Lesley S. 4 years ago on Google
Very cramped in the bathroom area, shower would be great if your 5 years old, no where to put shampoo or shower gel etc. The pictures on the internet are not right, the dining area did not exist, the court yard was full of rubbish bags, and as for breakfast, we ate out... would only recomend if your on a tight budget and not bothered about clean towels or sheets, as these were not changed in the 4 days we were there.I and my travel agent asked about tea and coffe facilities, we were both assured kettle etc was in the room, it was not....we asked at reception and they denied ever saying there was kettles etc, but upon showing him my e.mail, he then blamed booking staff...he reluctantly gave us a kettle that leaked everywhere, so we patched it up with elastoplast. Overall very disatisfied with this wannabe hotel.

  • 3/5 Frances K. 4 years ago on Google
Great location. Staff friendly and helpful. However, standard of room was poor. Curtain didn’t cover window fully, shower curtain didn’t pull across hence soaking wet floor, no tea/coffee in room and had to ask for a hairdryer. That was after we asked to move rooms due to the sewage smell in original room.

  • 1/5 Moritz S. 1 year ago on Google
First the (only) positive: the hotel has a perfect location to explore the city! Unfortunately that’s it… The Staff is very unfriendly! They gave us the wrong room at first, then had a big discussion about getting the room we booked. in the end we got a double room that was very dirty, smelled bad (like smoke) had disgusting stains on the carpet as well as mold all over the shower. We even got greeted by a cockroach the first night we came back. very little equipment in the bathroom, no nice soap or shampoo and changing towels or bedsheets costs extra, which I’ve never seen before. We stayed 5 nights and our room didn’t get cleaned once. After the cockroach we where able to switch rooms which was a little better but still not very clean and lots of mold in the bathroom. Also the water in the shower doesn’t really get warm By far the worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in, I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone!

We stayed here for 3 nights. For the price we paid it is a really nice hotel. Clean rooms and nice location.

The location is great but the hotel needs a good renovation, although the price for the room was reasonable.

  • 5/5 Levente I. 1 year ago on Google
Hotel with a great location for good prices. The rooms are nothing special but they are spacious (3m tall rooms) and they are clean. The house is an old 19th century house like most in Budapest city center. The hotel offers many services. I can only recommend this hotel for people that want to stay in the city center for a small budget.

  • 2/5 M N. 1 year ago on Google
Very poor hotel. Very dated, tatty, gloomy and smells of mould. Worst part there is no coffee/cafe at the hotel, and to make it worse the rooms have no kettle, cups, coffee ect. You get more from the premier inn and travelodge. You have to find a cafe bar for your morning tea/coffee, although not very far its bloody inconvient!. Hotel is in a good location though loads near by. I would'nt return to this hotel it has nothing at all

Upon arriving I found dirty underware from a previous occupier behind the fridge , when I took this to reception they just looked at me and didn’t really say anything 🤢, then tried to turn in the tv to find there was no power cable , although this was rectified quickly it shouldn’t be an issue if the room has been cleaned and checked properly , the bathroom was dire , shower was too small to move and wash in, and the radiator looked like it had been collected from a scrap yard, pro tip if you require more than one shower when you stay take extra funds to pay for a clean towel 🤦‍♂️, second night we had an unruly guest next door to us , after 2 hours I rang reception to be told that there wasn’t anything they could do, then I went down to reception to be told that they would move me rooms at 3am 🤷🏻 I asked why they other person wasn’t being dealt with or moved out of the hotel and was told he was a paying guest, erm yeah so am I and I’m not disturbing anyone. The hotel wasn’t very clean the entrance is lined with cages full dirty linen and towels , definitely not a pleasant stay and I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone else, the location of the hotel is the only saving factor

Excellent location, 50m from vaci utca, very kind staff ( rare for Hungary ), safe boxes and baggage keeping for free, also they offered to us hard copies of our boarding passes. Double windows and good air-conditioning. Negatives : bathrooms need renovation absolutely, cleaning especially at the common places need improvement.

  • 1/5 G S. 1 year ago on Google
Location is great! However, it is not helping to rate this hotel higher. Staff is rude and not supportive. I messaged properly about the late check-in (at 2am) my plane was late and we came only at 4am. Receptionist greeted us with sarcastic speech: why we came one day late and in the same manner informed us about check-out at 10am! When I asked at what time is restaurants open (it’s mentioned online, that they have nice restaurant), he also laughed and said that they don’t have any restaurants around

  • 4/5 Ian T. 1 year ago on Google
Much better than I was expecting... Room is fine, it's clean and a reasonable size for 1 person. Staff are very helpful and their service was good. The location is great, everything is walking distance, including metro station and airport bus.
