Shoes on the Danube Bank has it's own history in the books. It's an amazing place and one of it's own kind. Don't know much about it's history though. People gather here to pay tributes. Mostly this place is crowded with people and presents a beautiful view of the danube river and the city.

It’s a very sobering experience. As an American, we read about WWII. We’ve seen movies, perhaps, if we were lucky, we met a holocaust survivor. But until you d stepped foot in a concentration camp, until you see shells and ruin of buildings bombed in WWII, until you look at these shoes filled with pebbles as a remembrance of a loved one, you don’t even begin to fathom the depth of pain and suffering. It’s a silent, sobering reminder that we must do everything in our power to not let hate win.

Nice location. Interesting story behind the shoes. Detailed metal work when looking at the shoes. This is a nice place to visit if you're local or a tourist. The views along the river bank are great and there is some amazing architecture! Worth a visit if you are ever in Budapest. Located right next to the parliament building.

I had no idea about the shoes, nor that Hitler had killed 600 hundred thousand Jews out of 800 thousand, that these people had to take their shoes off, then wrists bound together to each other, then the first person was shot and just dragged in the others to drown, to save bullets. I had prickles at the back of my neck. But thank goodness the people there, never lets it be forgotten

Heartbreaking- you can feel the terror and imagine the brutality. It is unimaginable how cruel and barbaric the Nazis and the eager evil Hungarian Iron Cross were, but this exhibit reminds us. Had my grandfather not left Budapest in 1921, our family would have surely been murdered as well.

It might seem like a display of shoes at first glance, but there's a sad and important story behind it. These shoes hold a connection to the Holocaust, a tragic event from history.

A very historical surreal experience. And it was lovely to walk down the whole Danube promenade where there are plenty of other statues too! There are not scripts to tell you the story behind the shoes if you don’t already know. So googling the history is advised

It could get very touching if you know the story behind this. Looking at the monuments could bring you back to the devastating moment. Along the street and river there were many nice architectural buildings, not to mention the parliament that took us in awe.

A monument for the 550.000 Hungarian Jews who lost their lives between 1944 - 1945 by arrow cross militiamen. Thousands of them were shot at the banks of Danube. Before being shot, they were ordered to leave their shoes ashore. For most of them, this was their only valuable possession. The installation was erected in their memory in April 2005.

The composition of the memorial consists of sixty pairs of iron shoes that reflect the period in which the tragedy occurred. These shoes are affixed to the stone embankment, and behind them lies a 40-meter-long stone bench, 70 cm high. Three cast iron signs are placed at different points, displaying the text in Hungarian, English, and Hebrew. The inscription reads, "To the memory of the victims shot into the Danube by Arrow Cross militiamen in 1944–45. Erected 16 April 2005."

This is the most kindly heart touching holocaust monument I could ever see in my life. It provoques a different atmosphere for the visitors: not happy, not heavy. It makes you feel “in their shoes”. I felt lots of emotions, but for sure, not a heavy atmosphere as it happens in other monuments related. Really beautiful and kind homage.

To get there you need to walk right on the edge of the river. We were there after a few days with heavy rain, which made it muddy 🤷🏻‍♀️ as there is no real pavement. Hope that in time they will build the beautiful promenade. The memorial itself was heavily decorated with candles, flowers and traditional jewish materials. It is a beautiful memorial, sad, melancholic. Would benefit from some lighting at night.

You may get emotional looking at this site. Thousands of people were killed and their bodies thrown into the river. To mark this, iron boots are placed on the river banks, and ppl pay a tribute Very easy access from the metro station Kossuth Lajos Ter. And next to the Hungarian Parliament.

Three thousand five hundred, people, eight hundred being Jews were murdered here if you are visiting this city it's an essential stop just to pay your respects for these people men women and children they were made to remove their shoes and then shot and then pushed into the Danube it makes you realise how lucky we are. Hence the shoes. as a memorial.

This memorial represents to honour the Jews who were massacred by fascist Hungarian militia belonging to the Arrow Cross Party in Budapest during the Second World War and it represents thier shoes left behind on the bank when they were shot at the edge of the water so that their bodies fell into the river and were carried away.

It's a remarkable place from the point of view of history and as a hommage to those who were murdered as a result of intolerance and antisemitism. Nevertheless I missed a text explaining in detail what happened there in 1944-45. The monument looks neglected and dirty.

Very poignant and emotional — there’s quite a stark juxtaposition between the thriving Jewish culture in the city of Budapest and the reminders of how they once feared for their lives as a result of the world wars. Definitely an important place to visit with a very strong message.

This site is in a prime location (next to the parliament and on the Danube). It is definitely one of the most unique and interesting memorials I have yet to see. It has a very interesting story behind it. Definitely a must-see if you are nearby.

You often have to pass this to get to your river cruise but also if just wanting to go alongside the bank. As you can see it gives you a spectacular picture but also some history is great when visiting Budapest. A city rich in stories and moments that changed the region. Not to be missed and won’t take long.

The Shoes on the Danube memorial is such a chilling reminder of the not so distant past, and the experience of Jews in the Hungarian Capital. The irony is that shoes were expensive so they they weare asked to take off their shoes before they were exectuted. My friend had no idea when I took her, so if your on a tour of Budapest and are looking at the Jewish historial relics add this one to your trip

Sad story of the massacre of Jews during the Holocaust who fled and plunged into the cold and deep Danube river. An art installation of the victims' shoes made of iron became a tragic monument to that event on the banks of the Danube.

Sad to witness during holiday, but this was the reality of brutality not too long ago. To have learned that they still encounter bones in the river during dredging was just uneasy to hear. Let’s hope the evil doings of mankind will not repeat

This is a lovely walk fro the parliament buildings to the chain bridge. One spot is dedicated to the Jews who were shot and thrown into the Danube to be carried away during ww2 The little metal shoes are a poignant reminder of the cruelty and hatred of Jews and how they were so easily discarded and eliminated. It’s a sad sight.

A terrible genocide happened here and I must say that sign is extremely disappointing! ALL victims were Jews- killed for being Jewish in a cruel and awful way.

Nice place to visit while in Budapest, it commemorates the 3500 deaths by the fascists who were ordered to take off their shoes and then were shot. Their bodies fell into the river and shoes were left behind.

  • 5/5 Madhusudhan K. 5 years ago on Google
One site you shouldn’t miss is the ‘Shoes Over River Danube’ - a series of cast iron shoes laid out on the bank (on the Pest side just before the Parliament) commemorating the Hungarians who were shot dead by the Arrow Cross Militiamen at the very same spot during the WW II. The victims were forced to take off the shoes before firing them so the bodies fell in Danube and carried away! You can see few dozens of shoes on the bank, some torn, some mis-aligned, some just singles, all arranged haphazardly depicting the commotion and sadness when they were called upon to be shot. It is a poignant moment and certainly makes your heart go for the victims and think how evil a man can be! The torn shoes, singled ones, baby shoes and others all resemble the struggle Hungary had suffered during the second world war. It was a sad moment captured brilliantly! I highly recommend to visit this memorial! This isn’t a museum or a park or a architectural marvel, a simple yet powerful depiction of struggles of life of death!

Everybody must see this memorial place and think...

A significant and telling monument. Unfortunately people leave candles, ribbons, plants and locks all around and in the shoes. I'm sure they do this for emotional reasons, but it looks like garbage when the candles no longer burns, the ribbons get dirty and the flowers are dead. I become sad because the monument were littered, instead of thoughtful about its meaning and the history behind it. Maybe Budapest should clean up and arrange for some other way for people to express their feelings so that the shoes will be left alone.

This is an emotional experience. Think how cold the people must have been in December and January when they were forced to step out of their shoes before being shot. As a person from the USA, I find it odd that there are no railings along the walkway. It's about a 30 foot drop to the rocks below.

The “Shoes on the Danube Bank Embankment” monument honours the Jewish victims that were shot into the Danube by the Arrow Cross militiamen in Budapest, 1944-1945. This world famous composition was created by Gyula Pauer and Can Togay, is a memorial on the bank of the Danube in Budapest, which comprises 60 pairs of metal shoes set in concrete on the Danube embankment, was set up in the year 2005.

It's so sad! I can't believe someone did that. 3500 people were shot here in 1944-1945. That time, the shoes were valuable and could be stolen and resold by the militia after the massacre.

  • 4/5 Andrea N. 1 year ago on Google
A very special and very significant monument if you know the history. In fact, this monument represents the shoes of the Jews killed and thrown into the Danube one evening in the 1940s during the Second World War

Very thought provoking memorial, definitely worth a visit. We walked along the river but found access was restricted due to renovations on the bridge. So had to cross a busy road to get to the other side.
