Fascinating. That's it. There is a considerable collection which is just AMAZING. Worth to visit. The planning of the exhibitions and floors are good to. However, takes a lot of time to visit the whole museum at once(all floors and exhibitions) so sparing nearly half a day should be considered to have the best experience. Museum seems to be wheelchair accessible inside too.

My abiding memory of this place was the length of the queues. Twice gave up on previous day. Strongly recommend online booking, you will still join a (lengthy) queue, but it moves quicker than general admission. Enjoyed Egyptian and Roman exhibits in lower levels. Paid extra to view Matisse exhibit, still not a fan of his paintings except early self portrait. Did like some of his sculpture particularly larger scale pieces. May have missed them but no English works, Turner etc, or impressionists. Subject matter very heavy on portraits, religious scenes, some beautifully done but how many faces do you want to look at? Did not see one sea scape, battle scene unless you count George and the dragon. What did like was how the 3 main halls had been created in different architectural styles. But overall felt a little disappointed. Maybe been spoiled by National Galleries in London, Madrid, and Rome.

Visited this gorgeous museum on a Saturday morning. Went to see the Bosch exhibition and there was quite the queue, we waited about 20 minutes to get in. But it was worth it. We got tickets to see the Bosch exhibition which also included access to all the permanent exhibitions, which was great. Got the half price ticket for residents of the EU under 26 years of age. The place is wonderful and we saw lots of beautiful pieces of art. We also tried the restaurant, which had very limited options for vegetarians (rice and steamed vegetables is about as good as it gets) but it was quite nice nonetheless. Definitely a good spot for a quick, cheap lunch, a snack or a coffee and cake.

DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR MONEY. Worst museum i have ever seen. The employees don’t speak English and just repeat what they said in their own language. And worst of all the day i went they were doing an event in the space of the artworks and you couldn’t even get close to the paintings and they put barrels of beer inches away from the paintings which i assume must be dangerous for them and they had a problem with a bottle of water that was in my bag... Plus the lighting was horrible. Whoever curated the exhibition doesn’t have a clue about what they were doing..

Went to the Bosch exhibition on saturday. The line went on a medium speed, we waited around 15-20 minutes to get inside. Before entering we had to show our bags or leave them at the cloakroom. The exhibition itself was amazing, nicely planned out with great information about the painter and the history of the paintings. The ticket was about 4400 ft/adults, and very worth it Highly recommend!

Superb museum. Hundreds of amazing historical and high quality art works, mostly religious. Ground floor has an excellent Egyptian and Greek exhibition. The building is absolutely stunning. Seriously recommend this place so much. Lockers on level B1. Prepare at least 2 hours to see everything

I go to art museums when I visit new cities. I am not connected to the art world, I just happen to love it. This is an incredible art museum that houses a wide collection of spectacular art, which you can preview on the website. I especially went for the Renoir exhibition that happened to be on when I was there. It was absolutely incredible. The largest Renoir exhibition I've ever seen (personal opinion, not objective fact). The exhibit itself was wonderful because the museum have plenty of space in which to exhibit the numerous works. You did not feel like the art was hung closely together. Each piece had space in which to appreciate it. As for the non-exhibition art: wow. They've got something for everyone. I thought I wouldn't spend much time in some of the permanant collections, but I did. Highly, highly recommend you visit this museum. Wow!!

This is the second must see place in Budapest after the Parliament. The permanent collection is really big. The building is magnificent. Also if you catch Michelangelo - get the audio guide. The audio is good for the permanent but for Michelangelo is much needed and really adds to the exhibition. The museum staff are friendly and helpful. The museum cafe is really nice place. You might need a whole day to see everything.

In Budapest's Heroes' Square, the Museum of Fine Arts stands facing the Palace of Art. Built between 1900 and 1906, it holds over 100,000 artworks, spanning different European art periods. Its six departments cover Egyptian, Antique, Sculpture, Old Master Paintings, Modern, and Graphics collections. The museum underwent reconstruction and partially reopened in 2018, with added Hungarian Baroque art. The Art after 1800 collection moved to the Hungarian National Gallery.

A true gem in Central Europe! I visited during the Dutch artist exhibition of Van Dyck and Rubens. The guide was knowledgeable, welcoming, and extremely considerate with the flow. She ensured that everyone was able to hear, engage, and take their time in observing and admiring each painting. A catered event was hosted at the museum, and was highly organized. Happy to visit again soon!

We are lovers of art and we are happy to visit museums all over the world. So we could hardly wait to visit the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest. We were fortunate because it was an exhibition of Leonarda da Vinci's scientific works and sketches from 1504 to 1508. With the famous sculpture Horse and Rider. We were delighted with the beauty and precision of sketches and statues. In the second part of the museum are permanent exhibitions of ancient Egyptian art and rich collection of 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th century European paintings. So here we can enjoy watching the masterpieces by Italian masters Raphael, Giorgione, Titian, Jacopo Tintoretto, and Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, then Dutch masters Anthony van Dyck, Jacob van Ruisdael, and Jacob Jordaens. The department preserves one of Europe's most prominent Spanish collections, including paintings by Diego Velázquez, El Greco, Francisco Goya, and Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. The German and Central European parts of the collection are also remarkable both in regard to the number and quality of the works, including pictures by Albrecht Dürer, Hans Holbein the Elder, Lucas Cranach, Franz Anton Maulbertsch, and Jan Kupeczky. The history of collecting paintings is extremely interesting and therefore the visit to the museum is even more interesting. We were delighted with the richness of paintings and the wonderful ambience of the museum. Definitely worth a visit. We enjoyed each step.

Fabulous museum. The building itself is worth a visit. Everything is written in Hungarian and English and the presentation is great. At the entrance there is a huge multimedia screen where you can get "tempted" and learn more about the highlights of the museum. Very interesting solution! Lovely café as well. Another reason to go to Budapest

I have been to the Museum of Fine Arts a few times in my life. Since 2018, the museum has been renovated so út is worth visiting again. There are permanently and temporary exhibitions, too, and you can find artworks from the ancient times until the 19th century. I love the Museum Shop, too.

A beautiful museum FILLED with art, it’s 3 stories and a basement and it will take you a few hours to get through, they’ll ask you to put your belongings into a locker if you have anything with you bigger than a small purse❗️ but overall it’s amazing and it’s a must visit!

MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS The Museum of Fine Arts is situated beside Heroes' Square, with a view towards the Palace of Art. Constructed between 1900 and 1906 in an eclectic-neoclassical architectural style, it stands as a truly remarkable building. To be candid, despite my passion for art, we didn't explore its interior, as I have become somewhat weary of such museums, and my curiosity was primarily centered on the building itself.

The Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest is a cultural gem. Its impressive collection of art and exhibits is a testament to the rich history of Hungary. The museum's architecture and presentation are outstanding. It's a must-visit for art enthusiasts, offering a profound and enlightening experience.

I like to visit this museum occasionally. Some exhibitions are great and some are not, but that's normal. This time we saw the Renoir exhibition. His fans will say that it's great, and since I'm not a huge fan of Renoir, I can say that it was a pleasant afternoon spent with friends. The cafe in the basement is cozy and the staff is friendly. Otherwise, the museum itself is excellent. A ticket bought online turns out to be slightly more expensive than one bought on the spot. It wasn't too crowded, so we didn't need to buy tickets in advance.

This impressive Hungarian art museum was built by the plans of Albert Schickedanz and Fülöp Herzog in an eclectic-neoclassical style, between 1900 and 1906. The museum's collection is made up of international art (other than Hungarian), including all periods of European art, and comprises more than 100,000 pieces. The Museum's collection is made up of six departments: Egyptian, Antique, Old sculpture gallery, Old master paintings gallery, Modern collection and Graphics collection. Definitely recommended! I suggest though to take your time, as it is quite a vast museum and there’s a lot of different things worth dwelling on. For a proper tour at the museum, I would recommend at list two and a half hours. Enjoy!

Warning!!! DO NOT VISIT this museum on Mondays. Although the information is on their website, it is easy to miss the ‘smallprint’ stating that you will pay exactly the same price to see ONLY the temporary exhibition as the permanent exhibition is CLOSED. The desk staff WILL NOT inform you of this as you buy your ticket as you are expected to be already aware of this caveat. Having seen that the Museum of Fine Arts was open on Mondays, l decided that that would be a good day to visit, seeing as most other venues in Budapest are closed on that day. Unfortunately, l had not noticed the ‘smallprint’ when buying my ticket - that the FULL price was only for the temporary (Rubens) exhibition and that the permanent exhibition was still closed on Mondays. I learned the hard way and did not discover this until l had finished visiting the temporary exhibition and tried to access the other galleries, only to be told they are closed. I accept that this was my mistake, but the staff, right up to the senior admissions manager, made no effort to try to resolve this error. Under the circumstances, they could have offered me a ticket to return the following day to visit the permanent exhibition, but refused to. Like a secondhand car salesman, once they’ve got your money, that’s where customer service and satisfaction comes to an end. It has been my experience over the years that certain Hungarian institutions have still not learned the lesson that it is more important to have your visitors leaving feeling happy, rather than feeling they’ve been in some way cheated. Otherwise, they will neither return nor recommend your place to others. There financial loss will be far greater than mine over time.

(Translated by Google) It would be difficult to classify anything other than five. When I was a teenager, my window was on the side of the building, I wore a lot of stairs, just because I missed it, and sometimes because there was something special in it. We are still happy to visit these temporary exhibitions, although I already live at the far end of Buda. I was last here at Texture 2020 and it was great to roam the house again. In addition, the building, full of actors and small separate performances, now provided even more experiences. It is a pity that the epidemic also limits the visit to all meaningful and good places. Ráadásul a színészekkel, kis külön performanszokkal telehintett épület most még plusz élményeket is nyújtott. Kár, hogy a járvány korlátozza minden értelmes és jó hely látogatását is.

The museum is large and contains many unusual exhibits, including paintings and sculptures. Art enthusiasts will really be delighted with this place. The gallery is located in a nice park, which I also recommend visiting. There are many attractions, incl. sculpture of the first president of the United States - George Washington. The castle and the Palace of Arts are another of the many pleasures. After visiting the museum, you can stop at one of the restaurants and eat something delicious. Galeria jest położona w ładnym parku, który także polecam zwiedzić. Znajduje się w nim wiele atrakcji m.in. rzeźba pierwszego prezydenta Stanów Zjednoczonych – George'a Washingtona. It worths!! It can be visited when you go to see Heroes' Square. You need to go there is you have enough time cause it is huge :) There are many different areas such as ancient egypt, european art, some pieces came from Italy, and my favorite one Renaissance Hall, you should see the Jacopo Zabolino' paintings. Now, until 01.10.2021, there is Dürer-German Renaissance exhibition. It is free on national holidays but you need to go early cause there'd be a long queue. Just a reminder it closed on Monday and Thursday. Enjoy!

Love the latest exhibition. Beautiful historical building evoques different time periods. Love it.

Both currently running temporary exhibitions are top notch. The building is magnificent inside and outside. There are some treasures to be discovered in the permanent exhibition, too.

Huge and impressive building with lot of exhibitions. Quite big lines with people before entry, waited about half hour for entrance.

Stunning museum with amazing collections, permanent and temporary. Had the chance to see some of the most beautiful and famous paintings from Cézanne, art from Etruscan period and Greek and Roman. Renascimental paintings from Raffaello and major painters from Italy. Such a great experience. Also the building is really beautiful, well kept and clean, there is also a lovely cafè/bistro.

Great interactive equipments, shame almost 1/3 of the permanent exhibition are closed when I visited. superb gift shop, postcards are so nice, and cheaper than those souvenirs shops. Great ceiling arts for relatively new built buildings. If you pay attention you can see the star signs!

The Hungarian art hall on 3rd floor was inaccessible when I came here and there wasn't any information regarding it that I could find on the website or at the museum. Some of the artworks and descriptions in Bosch exhibition was difficult to see in low lightning and specified viewing distance, even more so when it was crowded. Great Renaissance art collections otherwise.

Locals consider it the world's best second-tier museum. I visited the Hieronymus Bosch exhibition in June 2022. That was well-organized and indeed included many originals by Bosch. I subtracted one star, because I believe that any national museum of fine arts should have its tickets set at a price range accessible to the country's lower-income households. In my opinion, this is not the case of the Szépmüvészeti.

Everything about this museum is just amazing! The building and interior are beautiful, and big collection of European Art. Went to the temporary exhibition of Henri Matisse and it was really great! Definitely worth visiting!

I visited the museum with my seven year old daughter. We enjoyed the interactive display of all the pieces of art, the Ancient Egypt exhibit, and the highest floor sculpture exhibit. We also had an afternoon refreshment in the cafe, and it was satisfying. I recommend a visit to this museum.

There are some works of artists I am interested in; and overall exhibition is well organized. So we wasn't disappointed. Considering the fact that not long before that I visited museums and galleries in Vienna I would say that this museum is good. Unfortunately we didn't have possibility to see temporary exhibition.

The Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest is located right across the Heroes Square. Since we went here in the evening the museum was closed, so cannot comment on the insides. The exterior is amazing in a Greek architecture style. Would love to come back and visit the museum sometime soon.

Beautiful place to spend cloudy afternoon in ! Reserve yourself at least 2,5 hours to go through everything because not only architecture is impressive, but the art pieces are fabulous as well. Everyone can find their style here. Egyptian sculpturing, Renaissance or local Hungarian art, it’s all here. Worth visiting ! 👏

Been there now couple of times. I would strongly suggest to visit this museum when in Budapest. Mostly people gather at the arhitectual halls which leaves a lot of space for those who enjoy paintings more. The only thing I would point out is that the staff does not really speak English. I guess that is not a surprise tho.

About £10 entry at the main entrance from friendly staff, cloak room downstairs for bags which should be €1 coin however the lady at the counter was kind enough to give us a coin piece to use for free. Took us about 2-3 hours to make it around 65% of the pieces, highlights for myself were Francis Bacon and the ancient Egyptian items in the lower level. The building is immense and a joy to explore, there were classes and tours for local schools going on and the staff were showing us to extra exhibits which were behind side doors which was really helpful. There’s English descriptions on each piece and audio guides to book if desired. For the price it’s a do activity if your in the area.

Very beautiful and impressive museum. The architecture alone deserves a visit. Within the museum is an incredible collection of art and artifacts. There are five floors to explore. We managed to explore only 3 floors in 4 hours at a fast pace. A minimum of one or two days are needed for a thorough viewing. This collection rivals the Vatican in my opinion. From Egyptian paintings to Renaissance to modern art. Most impressive for me was the 16th century masterpieces, very impressive. Highly recommended.

I was there about two weeks ago and I saw El Greco exhibition.. amazing, just amazing. Also, there’s a good amount of Antique art and Egyptian history as well! And some mummies too!! Worth to see, go check it!

If you are contemplating between visiting this museum or the National Gallery, I would reccomend you check out the latter if you are interested in hungarian art, but if you prefer temporary exhibitions, go here instead. The most interesting part here is the egyptian exhibition in the basement. The museum in my opinion is too big, and there are a lot of unknown artists' paintings and sculptures, which in my opinion are not as interesting as they are in other museums. The staff can be rather rude.

For history, art and architecture lovers, you can easily spend 3-4 hours with just the permanent exhibition. (We didn’t see the temporary works) In the permanent exhibition, it’s a lot of Christian themed renaissance paintings but also includes Hungarian, Ancient Roman and Egyptian work.

Fantastic museum and a must visit in Budapest. We started off ambitious wanting to cover a few museums in a day but started with this one. One museum was enough to drain us mentally. There were so much details in the art displayed in one exhibition alone, and it was definitely worth it. Museum closes at 5pm so do allocate more time to comfortably explore all the exhibitions. Tickets available on site.

It was surprisingly great! So interesting and beautiful! Pay attention: this is like a shelter from the heat outside - it has cooling in most of the halls. It was like being in heaven after 34 degrees outside.

  • 4/5 Phil B. 8 months ago on Google
Wonderful architecture but the art was very ‘same’y, we get it - Jesus was born, then died - that’s 90% of the paintings here.

Truly magnificent work of art from early century. Linking Hungary to Europe and the struggle and challenges of the nation. Work of arts covering, religion, history, life of the people, cultural exchanges, trade, people of influence,. The basement has mainly artifacts of Rome, Greece and other things of beauty. Magnificent building to house such historic value. The museum is in immaculate condition.

Museum of fine arts is a fine collection of ancient Egypt (mummies are also there), classic antiques, European art and sculpture and art in Hungary. About 2 hours is enough to visit the museum and the best time is the before the lunch when the crowded is thin.

The elevator didn’t work and there are no Comfortable benches, but the WC are clean The museum itself is good with great collections that I didn’t expect to see Don’t miss the Egyptian part and if you like European art start your visit from the highest floor

It is a very nice museum. It is a little bit expensive (4800) and the permant exhibition requires 2-3 hours. Avoid visiting after 4 pm, because you must leave the museum at 5:30 pm.

An unbelievably great place! So many artworks from different times in the history. Definitely a top destination for art lover tourists visiting Budapest.

Every art lover should visit this museum. We went to the Matisse exhibition. The queue was huge! But it was worth it 🥰 The museum had a shop with goods in the style of Matisse. These were puzzles, books, souvenir bags and much more. You can buy yourself something for memory. The museum often updates its collections, so there is always something new to look at.

We visited the museum to see the temporary exhibition of Reiner, and couldn't resist walking around the huge building to discover other exhibitions too. Free entry on the third Sundays each month. You shall find the entry to the Egyptian exhibition downstairs after the cloakroom in case you don't want to miss it. Professionally maintained rooms, interesting collection of fine arts from all around the world and from all times and ages.

One of best museums in Europe, with fantastic permanent and incredibly interesting and wide scale temporary exhibitions. To name a few grandiose exhibitions: From Cézanne to Malevich; Hirenymous Bosch; Matisse; El Greco etc. We love this museum, it is very close to us and we go there regularly.

A wonderful museum! You can currently view paintings by the artist P.A.Renoir. In addition, you can view the permanent exhibition, which includes Hungarian painters, Egyptian art, as well as many European artists. the museum has 5 floors and you need a minimum of 3 hours to see everything.

I love art museums, and this an absolute must see in Budapest, the art selection was so divine. The pieces were beautiful and also take your time strolling on each floor. The gift shop had a very nice selection, for those looking for some mementos. I went on a Sunday and it was not really crowded, and sort wait times to get your tickets.

Renoir exhibit is a must see event! It will be open until January 21. 2024! One will gain a wonderful glimpse at the artist's impressionist paintings and the history of his background and style of painting. Enjoyed it a lot! Purchasing the ticket ahead of time (online) will save you from standing in a long line. It's a wonderful organized exhibit.
