Not the best museum for tourists: -Some signs weren’t translated in English -The signs that were in English were very hard to read, the sentences didn’t get to the main point and very boringly formulated. So for me and my friend it was mostly looking at pretty things instead of learning something. We went on a national holiday so the entry tickets were free which was nice!

An excellent example of a city and national museum. Well laid out with bilingual information next to all the exhibits. It covers ancient history to modern times and its laid out in a logical manner. The building itself is absolutely gorgeous and it's fitting for a museum. There is a cafe inside which is top quality and of course lockers/cloakroom and toilets. The museum is surrounded by some nice grounds with lots of statues around. Ticket prices vary, remember to get a photography ticket if you want to snap away It's never particularly busy

The Museum itself is beautiful but the overall theme and exhibitions were lacking. I was left regretting my visit and honestly, it was not worth the visit. There are plenty of other museums in Budapest more deserving of a visit but if you are interested in the history of Hungary this museum is for you. The one interesting item in their collection was the document bringing Hungary out of the Warsaw Pact. That is a pivotal piece of history and somewhat made the trip worth it (but not entirely). Overall, if you have nothing else to do the museum will fill the day but honestly it was not worth a special trip. It is nothing to write home about.

Nice museum with some really interesting exhibits, though the staff aren’t very pleasant. I believe it was $7-$8 per person, really affordable, but they don’t tell you that you also need a “photo ticket” to be allowed to take pics of the exhibits. We absolutely would’ve paid this had we known if was necessary, and did take a few before one of the staff notified us that doing so required a specific ticket. It’d make more sense to work this additional fee into the price for general admission, as I think most people would like to take photos.

I got to enter and visit the museum for free on the occasion of one of the Hungarian national holidays. I would suggest not to do that if you really want to enjoy your visit, have a proper look at (and read) everything. In fact, it was so busy that even moving around was a challenge. The captions and panels are in English too, which was nice. However, I wasn't aware at first that to take pictures you have to buy an additional ticket, which will give you something to put on your jacket allowing the invigilators to know you're allowed. Otherwise, they'll approach you and tell you anyway, like it happened to me. The most interesting thing was the exhibition about the Seuso treasure, highly recommend!

From a person that was in a lot of museums in his life - EXTREMELY mean attitude from cashier alternative black haired girl after she asked us where we are from. Why would someone with this attitude work anywhere? Xenophobia? - mediocre museum, 2/5 exhibitions were interesting (personal preference) - Very hard to navigate where to go next - You have to pay to take photos in an national museum? Really? - Had a weird feeling that I’m watching the same thing for over and over - I really love the library section. The only section in my opinion that has attention to detail and is somehow unique - The staff from information point and people that guard the exhibition are absolutely lovely and caring

Definitely buy tickets in advance to avoid the line. Only two desks so the line goes on forever. The museum itself is cute, there are some really cool exhibitions but it's really small compared to most national museums which was surprising for me.

Very uncomfortable experience, travelling long way and been to there no later than 5 pm, but was be told by an indifferently ticket point worker that ‘we will closed after one hour and will not sell you a ticket, coming tomorrow.’ The interesting thing is, as this museum’s own introduction, the ticket point is closed at 17.30 pm.😡 We need to moderate our plan because of this kind of misleading and dishonest behaviour, disappointed. If your ticket point is closed at 17.00, please post it straightforward!

The Hungarian National Museum in Budapest, renowned for its extensive collection and rich historical exhibits, not only provides a fascinating journey through Hungary's past but also offers a warm and accommodating experience for visitors. During my visit, when I found myself without cash for the locker, the museum staff's kindness shone through as they lent me a special coin, exemplifying their dedication to ensuring a pleasant visit

We spend just over 3 hours here, enough to see a nice part of the general exhibition and the Roman part downstairs. It's a fun interesting museum with nice staff, decent opening hours, affordable entrance price (though at 2900 HUF a bit more then the train and military museums I've been to before in Budapest which were 2000), and the bilingual information everywhere is quite well done. We liked it.

Huge place, if you are interested in history and not just prancing around it will take you a minimum of four hours to explore it all (took me six and towards the end I was trying to move as fast as I could). The museum is laid out on three floors, the lower floor hosting a lapidarium with tombstones dating from the centuries of Roman occupation of Pannonia as well as a treasure trove of coins and jewelry from all over Hungary. The ground floor hosts an archaeology museum presenting the history of Hungary since the paleolithic to the establishment of Hungary as a polity of Europe in the 10th century. Also on this floor there is an exhibition of a treasure trove (Seuso) which was the absolute highlight of the whole museum for me. There is also a library and a ceramics museum that could easily fill three medium museums if properly curated. The upper floor presents the history of Hungary from its' establishment as a state to the end of communism, the highlight here was the room on the 18th century. Overall, it's a big place with a tonne of artifacts, the price for all was 6000 HUF because I paid extra 1000 to be able to take photos. This extra charge is well worth it, I took about 700 pictures although more than half are bad because of poor lighting. Which leads me to the negatives: - as others have stated the museum is a bit chaotic... It really could improve by giving you at least a map if proper signs would seem as too burdening - the invigilators will not be able to help you, they don't speak anytime but Magyar, good people even though a bit eager to "impose the rules", you are very much on your own here, not even at the reception desk did I find much support, all the staff are despondent - the lighting is very poor in two thirds of the exhibition, in many places it's impossible to take pictures and even to read the text and get a good look at the exhibits, some of the text is white on glass, no clue why anyone thought that a good idea - there is a lot of bias and factual inaccuracies in some of the modern history rooms BUT less than I had expected Overall, I spent here six hours and soaked up a lot of history but this museum can find vast room for improvement

Centrally located museum that is easy to get to on foot or by bus. When we went there was the World Press Photos exhibitions, which you needed to pay extra for to see. One adult ticket is 3500 HUF (Hungarian Forint). You can pay by cash or card at the main desk. There is also a little museum shop on the left hand side when you enter the main doorway, and a cafe on the right hand side. I recommend buying your tickets online in advance if you can, as it will save you waiting in any queues. When we went on a Sunday, the queue was extremely long and going down the stairs and round the garden area. It was moving quite quickly but after 4.30pm it was moving very slowly. We left and came back on a Tuesday (they are closed on Mondays). There was no queue and super easy to get in. You need to go downstairs after getting your ticket, and drop of your bag. You can drop off you coat too, if you want. There are two floors, the second floor is the history exhibition. The museum is very attractive, some information is in Hungarian only. It is worth visiting and is a main attraction. When I went, however, there wasn't that much to see.

The quality of the exhibitions is outstanding. The museum has a beautiful interior, location and a great atmosphere for the events. The staff is helpful and very smiley. The current “Hungarian Bride” exhibition is excellently organized, high-quality collection and work. I was even happier when I saw my great-grandmother’s marital photo from 1941 in the digital archive!

The museum itself was nice to get an overview of the history of Hungary. The problem was that a lot of the translations were not that we'll, the chronological order wasn't that correct and it skipped some parts of the history. The employees were not that friendly so the experience could be a lot better. However, I learned a lot of new things here so it was helpful after all

This is a very good place to start your sightseeing of Budapest if you want to understand how Hungary has come through so many conflicts and wars with other countries across many centuries to become the place it is today. As well as taking you through it's history there are also some great displays of archaeological finds eg Masonry and Roman silver. The bulk of the exhibition space is on the first floor. Entrance fee is 2900 Ft, if you want to take photos you pay an extras 1000 Ft. It's strange because I didn't realise you couldn't take photos until someway into the exhibition when a staff member told me, so I returned to the ticket desk to pay and get a sticker. The museum is surrounded by a small park with children's play area and many benches where you can sit in the shade of the trees.

Really nice afternoon if you feel like learning all about Hungary’s history. Offers audio tours and tickets aren’t expensive. (Not sure if Audio tours are in multiple languages, but there are multiple languages next to each exhibit to allow for travellers)

First visit to this wonderful museum of Hungarian History. The building itself like many in Budapest is reason enough to visit. Stunning frescoes and architectural details that have been beautifully and carefully maintained. We spent about 5 hours here which was not long enough as we all enjoyed going through most of the sections in great detail. From the Hungarian Stone Age right up until the 90's the museum has interesting and well displayed artifacts with many detailed explanations. One thing I've noticed in many Hungarian museums is a lack of explanations of materials used in various items. For instance what type of wood, leather, gut, feathers etc were used in the construction of a hunting bow? Or what type of material was the mannequins peasant dress made from? Cotton, Wool, Hemp etc? I really enjoyed my visit here and will probably come again next time I'm in Budapest.

Beautiful museum detailing the history of Hungary. We didn’t find any issues with the descriptions - all were perfectly fine. Although one turn off was that they were checking our tickets incessantly even though we needed a ticket to go up the stairs to go to the exhibition rooms..

The museum was informative, however, it did not manage to capture my interest. The collection covered, for instance, artefacts from the medieval ages, as well as objects of archaeological importance. I would enjoy visiting the place if I was passionate about such topics. It took me 40 minutes to visit everything, but 2 hours are recommended.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with some of the less positive reviews. One cannot say threat Hungarian history is boring, or that there isn't a lot tons how and talk about, and it is to get this general framing of the history of a State and the people who inhabit it that someone wants to visit a National Museum. Unfortunately, Budapest still has a long way to go before getting it straight on cult aural tourism. The ticket, even a student one, could be less expensive. The 20 rooms along which the exposition is articulated are often accompanied by texts in Hungarian without any translation, which is unnerving. Personally I really enjoyed the last part about Horthy and real socislism, but too small of a a space was dedicated it that.

As a Turkish visitor to this fascinating museum, my experience was nothing short of complex and intriguing. The museum itself added an intriguing layer to my feelings, as it even sold books suggesting that Magyars had Turkic origins. This left me in a state of ambivalence, torn between my Hungarian and Turkish identities. It's a testament to the rich tapestry of history and identity that exists in this part of the world. What struck me most was the incredible diversity and integration of Turkic nations throughout history, adapting and evolving within the context of different civilizations. The museum's timeline spans from the 11th century right up to the 21st century, encompassing pivotal events like both World Wars, the Cold War, the conflicts between the Ottoman and Hapsburg empires, and even the Kipchak and Tatar Wars. As I wandered through the museum's halls, I was captivated by the intricate ornaments, grand paintings, and displays that showcased the evolution of money, scientific advancements, and artistic achievements. It's a journey through time that makes you feel like you're bearing witness to the history of one of Europe's most distinguished and noble nations. I hold a deep respect for the Magyars and their rich heritage, and I salute them with all my heart. This museum serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of cultures and the way in which Turkic nations have played a vital role in shaping the history and identity of the places they have called home. It's a testament to the enduring spirit of adaptation, resilience, and growth that defines the Turkic people throughout history.

My second stop at the Museum and there will need to be a third! So much to see. We'll worth the visit. Some items in English, a translator would have been good as I do not speak Hungarian.

Two in one - a modern and historical museum. I liked the description of the expositions. There are a lot of expositions that are available in both languages Hungarian and in English, which is very commendable. The exhibition of photographs with their history was remembered most of all. Thank you for keeping the museum clean, tidy and interesting.

It was the first visit to me for a wonderful museum in Budapest. We spent about 3 hours here which was not long enough as we all enjoyed going through most of the sections in great detail. You will need part of the day to discover all the history of Hungary and more interesting exhibits. Lots on Hungary's history and culture, stories, formal dresses, weapons, and heroes participate in the revolution Hungary in 1848. Most written information is also available in English. will leave you to enjoy some photos of the amazing museum.

(Translated by Google) Unfortunately, the Hungarian National Museum (as opposed to the Museum of Fine Arts, which acts more carefully in this respect) does not properly inform its visitors about the closure due to the epidemic. Google information still shows that the museum is open and closes at 6 pm :-( (Original) Sajnos a Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum (szemben az ebben a tekintetben gondosabban eljáró Szépművészeti Múzeummal) nem tájékoztatja megfelelően látogatóit a járvány miatti bezárásról. Great place to visit at least once in a lifetime. Especially recommend during national celebration days because it's for free. Lots of people on 15 March but worth to stand in a crowded lines. Some of the exhibitions need a refreshment because they look just old and boring, some pieces seem to be there just to collect the dust. Nevertheless it's a must-go for a trip.

This is a Grand museum. The building itself is one of the exhibits. We bought the full access tickets and spent more than 3 hours exploring the exhibits and didn't see everything. The exhibits go from pre-history through the communists period. There is a cafeteria which is good for taking a break and a coffee bar in the main entrance.

Excellent museum with bilingual information for foreign guests. The layout of the museum leads from pre-settlement though Hungary present. Well worth a visit. So many fascinating artifacts from prehistoric times. Just a great museum and wish I had more time to visit.

Beautiful building with lovely gardens surrounding it. We visited a few weekends ago to go and see the World Press Photo exhibition, which shows the best journalistic photographs taken over the last year. The photos were taken in several different countries all around the globe and gave a fascinating insight into the cultural landscapes and socioeconomic plights faced by people in countries I knew very little about. The information that accompanied the photos was detailed and was really helpful in providing context for the images. A fascinating exhibition. We had a great day out and after we’d seen the photos, we enjoyed our lunch in the gardens as the weather was lovely.

A nice museum with a lot of different artifacts that cover the history of Hungary since humans evolved. I felt it was lacking info in the last 200 years and I also felt like it did not tell the whole story of Hungarys willing participation in the world wars. It was also quite confusing with the info since there were a lot of small info plates where some of them carried crucial info and some were meaningless

If you like history and museum, this is a reasonably priced museum, plenty periods to explore and variety of subject from prehistoric to modern communist era in Hungary, i would block out 2-3 hrs for this one. OH, If you want to take pictures, you can pay extra for that

It's in a grand Neoclassical building built 1837-1847 to be the national museum. It has a large interesting collection with many striking artifacts and informative signs. By the way, the free admission for those over 70 and the half price for seniors less than 70 is only for EU residents. If you aren't from there you pay full price [2900 Ft= $8.60 USD].

Very beautiful exhibitions with explanations into small details. Today we visited the Hungarian archeology (ancient history), the Seuzo Treasure and the 2 parts of Hungarian History I.-II. . Bravo!!!! History and archeology fans can be overly happy! I wanted however give one star because of the "photo ticket" lady who barged into our idyllic family-friend gathering and deep conversation and asked for an EXTRA photo ticket beside that we already paid for 4 people more money than the average daily Hungarian salary. Just because we took randomly 1-2 pics. We don't use flash. We don't take away your artifacts with our made photos. We bought after the trip 3 books from your store!!!! Keep calm! / Give still 5 stars because it deserves at least double-triple so much for the nice exhibitions on one place.

Much to see and to read about the history and rising of Hungary. I didn't enjoy the parts with pieces of "millions of years" ago, though. It's a good museum, but the material didn't really attract me. Perhaps they should have added a story line.

Pretty good National Museum.. tons of rich cultural artifacts and medieval items. Then it brings it up to the World War days and influences from Russia. Special exhibition going on as well. For the price it is definitely worth spending some time. Two good hours pushing but you can spend easily up to 3, didn't get to everything even at that.

An excellent 👌 introduction of the history of Hungary. National treasures, artifacts are beautifully displayed. Entry fee is very reasonable. There is an indoor Cafe with beverages and light desserts as well. If you'd like to take pictures inside, you NEED to purchase an extra ticket (1 000 Ft).

A really great museum, it was very interesting. Every room tells you about a different period of history. Also, if you need to spend some time somewhere, this is a great spot, as you can store the luggage for free in the museum as a visitor. We visited the The World Press Exhibition some days ago on a weekday. We arrived at 5pm and we expected that we have an hour to explore until closing. While purchasing the tickets no one said a word about leaving the exhibition at 17:45 is a must because the museum closes at 6 pm as we learnt from one of the grumpy museum staff. It was hard to find the exhibition entrance too without clear signs, losing the precious time in the process. The staff should have stopped to feel irritated by the visitors, we are not their enemy... all in all, it was a bad museum experience, do not recommend it.

The Hungarian National Museum is a cultural treasure in Budapest. Its impressive architecture and vast collection of historical artifacts make it a must-visit for anyone interested in Hungarian history. The exhibitions are well-curated, offering a comprehensive journey through the nation's past, from ancient times to more recent events. The museum provides valuable insights into Hungary's rich heritage, and the interactive displays and informative signage enhance the visitor's experience. Whether you're a history buff or simply looking to learn more about Hungary, this museum is a fantastic destination. However, it can get quite crowded during peak tourist seasons, so plan your visit accordingly.

My visit to the National Museum of Hungary was a journey through the rich tapestry of the country's history and culture. From the moment I stepped inside, I was greeted by an atmosphere of reverence and curiosity. The museum's architecture is a testament to the grandeur of the past, and the exhibitions are a treasure trove of artifacts, art, and historical documents that provide a profound insight into Hungary's heritage. Wandering through the galleries, I was struck by the comprehensive collection that spans from ancient times to the present. It's a compelling narrative of Hungary's evolution, from its prehistoric origins to its role in shaping European history. The staff were knowledgeable and eager to assist, adding to the educational experience. Whether you're a history enthusiast or simply seeking a deeper understanding of Hungary, the National Museum is a cultural gem that promises a fascinating and enriching visit. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in delving into the heart of this captivating country's story.

The Hungarian National Museum was founded in 1802 and is the national museum for the history, art, and archaeology of Hungary, including areas not within Hungary's modern borders, such as Transylvania; it is not to be confused with the collection of international art in the Hungarian National Gallery.

The museum is a great showcase of the cultural heritage and history of Hungary in an accessible form. Everyone should at least stroll once on a visit here I don't necessarily dig the additional payment to make pictures... But otherwise it should definitely be on the scope of anyone visiting Budapest The architectural structure of the building alone is enough to visit in my opinion

Good museum with nice structure in regards to going chronologically through the different periods of history. Alot of information was not translated to english though, which was rather sad as an international. Also, a downside is that you have to buy a “photo pass” to take pictures… come on?

Visited the world press photo exhibit in this museum and after getting a coat back from coat check all of the change in the pockets had been stolen. A lot of Forint and a couple 2€ and £2 coins, when asked the coat check worker denied anything even though the door had been locked and we had to wait for him to come back and open it. When we asked for help at reception we were waved away with "I don't think my college would do that" and a dismissive hand wave when we said how much money we had lost. This felt like a huge invasion of our personal items and a complete uncaring attitude from staff.

WORLD PRESS PHOTO REVIEW Waited 20 mins to buy the tickets (you can also buy online but for a ridiculous extra “online convenience fee” added per ticket). Then queued 30 more minutes to enter. This is a joke Fix the online ticket system so that 1) it’s same price as buying at museum 2) sell tickets to dedicated time-slots to avoid this extreme queuing

Amazing collection of roman silver, be aware if you intend on taking photos of the exhibits, you need to purchase a ticket specifically for that.

It turns out that it is necessary to get a tag, for the purpose of photography ... Besides, comprehensive and rich information.

Really surprising location. Was afraid it had no content - there were no people anywhere! It was however a lot bigger than anticipated, had english text descriptions & a cool set of expositions. Would not recommend the garden, doesn't add anything interesting, besides sitting in the grass.

There are some really insightful exhibitions here. Most of the time you have English translations. The museum is quite large, and unfortunately I couldn't visit all of it as it was closing at 17h30. It's a great place to learn about Hungarian history. Not extremely interactive, but very informative.

Very cool to visit, giving you a well-structured and fun tour through Hungarian history all the way from the stone age. Great for children too with lots of lifesize exhibits. Don't expect an art museum though...this is dedicated to the Hungarian history. Texts are in Hungarian and English, staff is friendly. Paying extra to see the temporary exhibitions isn't worth it in my opinion unless the specific topic interests you.

It was a lot of fun. Lot of things to see and a beautiful building with an park. Don't forget to stop by at Geraldine to eat some pastries with some coffee and ice cream.

(Translated by Google) One day you could wander there, there is so much that is worth watching, reading, listening to ... It is worth coming back, just because of the temporary exhibitions. (Original) Egy napot el lehetne bolyongani ott, annyi minden van, amit érdemes lenne megnézni alaposan, elolvasni, meghallgatni... Érdemes visszajárni, már csak az időszakos kiállítások miatt is.

Fascinating artifacts, organized by rooms. Beware, it will take several hours to fully explore! 1000% worth the admission price if you have any interest for history - ancient, modern, or anything in between!

Definitely goes into the to do list in Budapest. museum is very informative and has a lot of items not just from Hungarian history but gone back all the way to Austria-Hungary. Hospitality from staffs are so nice and helpful. Only draw back are stairs. If you are on wheel chair or baby stroller. Forget about the lift and there are a lot of stairs. staffs will do everything to help but it's not the most convenient place to visit if you have any of those above.

I came here in November 2021. The museum itself contains very good pieces of art and history. It's very badly organized, it's difficult to find the right directions and most staff there can't speak English. Me and other 10 people were kicked out 20/30 minutes before closing time from some of the rooms.

Amazing museum about Hungarian history from ancient times until the fall of communism. It's well organized and well maintained. But a negative aspect is that we received a map in hungarian. Only at the end of the tour we discovered there was also an english version. I don't understand why the employee did that. Also, there was a second exhibit which we weren't told, which is purchased separately. I recommend more attention from the staff.

History was never my favorite subject but I found this museum to be very interesting. It explained parts of the Hungarian history that I never would've learnt elsewhere. I wish I had more time to spend there. Note that photography is an extra fee here but is well worth it. Museum is worth a visit both for children and adults.

A small museum devoted to Hungarian history. It is dated but quite informative and interesting at times. It could use some refreshing though. Its also quite expensive for its small size

I didn't feel so crazy about the exhibitions in the museum - especially modern history was very condensed with very little explanations. But the park around is magnificent! You're allowed to lay on the grass, run around, play football,... do whatever. it's very much kid-friendly, there's even this lovely new playground that made me want to be 5 again.
