Robert Capa (born Endre ErnƑ Friedmann;(1913 –1954) was a Hungarian–American war photographer and photojournalist. He is considered by some to be the greatest combat and adventure photographer in history. He subsequently covered five wars: the Spanish Civil War, the Second Sino-Japanese War, World War II across Europe, the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, and the First Indochina War, with his photos published in major magazines and newspapers. He was killed when he stepped on a landmine in Vietnam. The world's first permanent retrospective exhibition of Robert Capa's photography, entitled 'Robert Capa, the Correspondent' opened on 13 June in Budapest, in the new 500-square-metre exhibition space of the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Centre. The unique exhibition presents some 140 photographs from the series, including many of the iconic ones. It covers the most important stages of the photographer's life, and the photos are arranged according to the themes defined by his oeuvre.

There were three exhibitions when I was there. The Nicolas Muller exhibition was really interesting and I highly recommend it. The one about André Kertész was also interesting as it gives a glimpse on lesser known chapter of his work. The Magnum 75 is a disaster. What were they thinking replacing photos with QR codes? If I want to look at photos on my phone, I can do it from anywhere, I don't need to go to a museum. It's also ridiculous that a museum dedicated to photography forbids taking pictures inside, so here is photo of the entrance...

Friendly staff, interesting pictures, not my taste, but that's no reason for deducting stars! Why I deduct: its not easy to find the entrance, some renovation is going on outside, what's on display is again not easy to decipher? The Capa part is good, some Fotos are indeed strong I really liked the sofas to sit and let the images in the project room do its thing, unfortunately thay didn, t do much for me. Lastly, no context, or some points to relate we're badly missing for me. In my opinion Budapest has better places to spend ones time, still a valuable experience...

A must go gallery while you are Budapest. Also there's a little Capa cafe next door.

Why it took me so long to recognize the importance of Robert Capa's photography and to visit the exhibition center in Budapest is unfathomable to me. I love photography and consider it the top form of art as it connects one with the important moments in time. Robert Capa is that Guy! He, fortuitously was there, where everything significant was taking place during a tumultuous period in the 20th Century. From important political moments, to the devastation of conflict of war, to the iconic people he was in touch with and photographed. Without his work of photographs the world would be at a significant loss. And the beautiful, well delivered exhibition in the historic gallery off of Andrassy Street. The exhibit didn't just make my day and make my 28th visit to Budapest special, but it confirmed my own sense of wonder, how Hungary, with its challenging 20th Century history, continued to produce such remarkable characters?

This exhibition is not very big but it was very impressive. This was a great way to learn and observe more about the culture and current events in Hungary along side some stunning photography. I know the exhibition changes often but I imagine it’s always worth seeing.

I visited the Robert Capa exhibition. It's comprehensive and carefully arranged so it never becomes boring or overwhelming. The pictures which evoke strong emotions got huge spaces so you can deal with them one by one. The best thing is that you can watch the pictures up close l, everyone can find their own way to enjoy it.

Nice Building and some good exhibitions but I absolutely don't recommend going to the hunting exhibition of Zsigmond Szenchenyi as it just glorifies hunting (now endangered animals) without disclaimers or retrospective studies.

I like the cafe here, the coffee and sandwiches are good. But the staff are so grumpy! One girl in particular looks like she’s ready to bite someone’s head off. I’ve come here many times now and never a ‘hello’ or ‘thank you’. Not even a smile. They don’t seem to enjoy their job.

Capa was a photography legend having covered so many conflicts
and some peacetime stories. His framing, his ability to capture the right moment, his sense of light is unbelievable. This exhibition hints at the personal tragedies and hardships he had to deal with. It would have been nice to find out more. There’s a touching end to the show: his last picture and some portraits of him. I’m still wondering why there’s no film about his life. The script is ready!

  • 5/5 Henry V. 9 months ago on Google
Awesome, went for the Capa exhibit and it takes you through so many emotions apart from the historical importance of his work. It's mind blowing that a single person could have witnessed so many of the 20th centuries biggest events.

  • 5/5 Gergely F. 8 months ago on Google
Well presented collected works with quirky, intersting, and detail-rich side-exhibits to Capa's early life, the nature and emergence of photo reporting, some technical history, anecdotes from his life. In English and hungarian. A small space, yet to fully explore you'll need an hour and a half.

Robert Capa is amazing! The curator and the team are perfect. You need to stay here at least 2 hours for enjoying the exhibitions.

  • 5/5 Johanna 6 months ago on Google
Robert Capa's photos were incredibly good. They captured the moment perfectly. So they were full of emotions and sometimes with a lot of brutality. Through his photos you were in another world, in the past when they were taken. What's particularly impressive is that he was there for such historic moments and even captured them on camera. He took photographs of both sides that faced each other in the war. Incredibly impressive! I would definitely go again.

Opened in 2023, this permanent exhibition aims to show Capa's life's work. Focus is on the war and crisis photo journalist, from the Spanish civil war through WW II and conflicts in Israel.

Fantastic museum about the best war photographer who ever lived, and died too soon. Everyone involved in setting up and running this exhibition should be praised - comprehensive, detailed and balanced. Not to be missed. Such helpful and knowledgeable staff. Thank you very much. Worth a trip from London for me just on its own.

  • 5/5 Flo K. 7 months ago on Google
One of the most beautiful, intelligently designed museums I've ever visited. Worth a visit. If you don't have enough time, they can stamp your ticket and you go back the day after. And Capa is definitely one of the greatest photoreporters in the world. The museum does give him justice.

Situated in the tallest building at the moment it was raised, the place hosts a collection of impressive photos by and with war photographer and journalist Robert Capa. It is also a great place for temporary exhibitions and artists working daily (painters, photographers). If in Budapest, pay a visit, it will be worth it :)

(Translated by Google) Tidy, few visitors, clean, as it has always been for years. This year's exhibition material creates a very bad mood unfortunately. This brutal realism does not give the everyday visitor the strength to break out of the depressive framework. (Original) Rendezett, kevĂ©s lĂĄtogatĂł, tiszta, ahogy Ă©vek Ăłta mindig. (Translated by Google) I am a returning visitor, the exhibitions are very high quality, although sometimes crowded (little space). Last time I couldn’t go through the rooms due to the noisy visitors, not even the sound of the continuous video projections could be understood. It was completely unenjoyable. No one spoke to anyone, no one bothered - even in a public nightclub .... I was in company and we turned out in frustration, talking at the checkout about the unpleasant experience. To get a ticket price back - there was no question of that, they just "regretted" the situation with their arms outstretched and shrugged. It was a guided tour earlier - as we learned - and the company of acquaintances felt very familiar and at home on the spot afterwards :( A shower made us wait in the doorway (for lack of ☔), luckily. One of the employees showed up and kindly offered to go back to the museum at a later date with the same ticket, on weekdays when there is peace - and he wrote that on our tickets. Thus, the experience remained very pleasant even without an enjoyable viewing of the photos, because it was considered / considered important that no one should go disappointed, annoyed, or the guests would be happy to return to another great exhibition later :) (Original) VisszatĂ©rƑ lĂĄtogatĂł vagyok, a kiĂĄllĂtĂĄsok nagyon szĂnvonalasak, bĂĄr nĂ©ha zsĂșfoltak (kevĂ©s a tĂ©r). TĂĄrsasĂĄgban voltam Ă©s csalĂłdottan fordultunk ki, a pĂ©nztĂĄrnĂĄl szĂłvĂĄ tĂ©ve a kellemetlen megtapasztalĂĄst. JegyĂĄrat visszakapni - errƑl szĂł sem lehetett, csupĂĄn szĂ©ttĂĄrt karral, vĂĄllvonogatĂĄssal "sajnĂĄltĂĄk" a helyzetet.

Personally, I very much enjoyed my visit to this museum. You have to read a bit of the backstory to know how the pictures all come together. The subjects presented are relevant and interesting. The atmosphere is refreshing and makes you think and consider things from a different perspective you might not have known before. Technique of course is flawless. Keep in mind, photography is not allowed but it only adds to the experience as you get to study the work with your own eyes instead of the camera or the phone screen.
