This would probably be an amazing place, yet I give one star only, as they don't tell you on their web site and elsewhere that the villa is practically closed, as it is open to groups only. We came for nothing.

If you want to feel like a Cold War spy, this is the place to go. The staff are probably very nice, but need to learn how to follow people around a little less ostentatiously, lest the guests feel like criminals. Although we loved the feeling of having our own personal security, it was a bit wearing to be silently tailed around the whole museum, especially as each room has security cameras and most exhibits are behind glass. The temptation to actually steal something (a sensation I’d not had before) became increasingly strong throughout our visit, if only to give the poor attendants something meaningful to do. Aside from that, the place is lovely. Gorgeous art nouveau furniture, ceramics and decor. In fact, it was so beautiful we just *had* to take a few pieces with us. Must recommend.

(Translated by Google) When I went to college, I lived there in the neighborhood of the Museum of Applied Arts, but I never went there. Now it is under renovation and closed. But on the website I discovered and visited the open-air exhibition of Ráth György Villa. This building has a very special atmosphere. This can be felt in the garden, but if we go up the stairs from the cashier and enter the hall, the atmosphere of the turn of the century and the air are different. I think it comes from beautiful antique masterpieces. Anyone who loves the world of Jugendstil / Art nouveau / Art Nouveau / Art Deco is definitely here. Breathtakingly beautiful objects are on display here. And one Saturday afternoon there was hardly any visitor. I could hardly fill the vision. Interestingly, the two have nothing to do with each other, but this house, with its energy and atmosphere, reminds me of Jim Thompson House in Bangkok. The link between the two is, I think, that both buildings are permeated by the spirit of the former owner, and this can be felt even after decades, because somewhere both are somehow "there". And one thing in common is that they are both "hidden gem" / "Geheimtapp". They are not among the top attractions in the world. So here I can only say: if you are in Budapest, but you have no time, HERE, by all means come. Aki szereti a Jugendstil/Art nouveau/Szecesszió/Art deco világát, annak egyértelműen itt a helye. Lélegzetállítóan gyönyörű tárgyak vannak itt kiállítva. S egy szombat délután alig volt látogató. Én alig tudtam betellni a látvánnyal.

György Rath was the first director of the Museum of Applied Arts, and here in this Villa which was his home you can see highlights of the Art Nouveau collection held by the Museum which is undergoing reconstruction. Some of the pieces are organised on the first floor room by Country e.g France, Austria and Britain. Then you have an Art Nouveau Dining Room and Sitting Room. You also have Rath's collection of pictures and some interesting oriental pieces on the upper floor.

They had a very interesting and well exhibited collection of Art Nouveau articles with explanations in both Hungarian and English. The staff were both unobtrusive and helpful in one! It was a really good experience for both my wife and myself. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in a quality experience.

Beautifully curated items in each room. I especially enjoyed the porcelain. The room attendants try their best to not hover while maintaining security; a challenging task. A couple attendants pointed out where I could find English explanations of each item in their catalog, which was very helpful as there weren't item labels.

The staff was super kind and helpful. The collection of furnitures is amazing however it would be useful to have detailed information about them(since there is nothing). I missed a bit to see rugs in the interiors, however i do understand it would be difficult to walk around in the rooms. The one that is actually exhibited is a really nice piece.

Very nice and small museum, about the secession in Hungary. It is two floors with ten rooms, all about glass and small items and furniture of the turn of the century. A couple of interesting chandeliers are also worth noting. There are no information about the items on display - you will get a booklet that describes all and you give it back to the cashier after your visit. No museum shop. The garden is also small and nice to sit for a couple of minutes after the visit. Ticket price is about 9 EUR, a bit on the expensive side compared to other museums in Hungary - still, an afternoon hour well spent.

Beautiful Museum I enjoyed particularly. Very well presented outstanding pieces . Sadly there were 3 visitors with me and it's a pity. The guardians were very helpful, though we had some problems to understand each other (they were mostly speaking hungarian and a bit of english, which I completely understand ).Highly recommended and in a beautiful area in Budapest.

I had a wonderful time at the museum, where I learned a lot about art nouveau and its history. The museum has a rich collection of paintings, sculptures, furniture, jewelry, and other objects that showcase the diversity and creativity of this artistic movement. The guide was a passionate young woman who had a deep knowledge and appreciation of art nouveau. She explained the background and context of each piece with enthusiasm and clarity, and she was also really discreet and nice. She answered all my questions and made us feel welcome and comfortable. I highly recommend this museum to anyone who loves art and wants to discover more about art nouveau. It was a truly enjoyable and memorable experience. Highly recommend, thanks a lot. Cédric & Kata

If you like Art Nouveau then this place is a MUST! Wonderful collection of pieces from that period, some are exquisite. We managed to look round in about an hour and a quarter (as it was closing) but could have done with longer.

Very nice villa with a very diverse collection. Nice and competent employees, who are pointing out the techniques being used, and explaining the life-cycle of the Jugendstil style in a historical- and cultural perspective. The front garden is being renovated. It will take you around 1,5...2 hours to wander around.

I was there today the boxing day. Contrary to many other museums in Budapest, it was open. I could enjoy the whole building almost to myself. It's a rather small villa but with massive collection of art nouveau artifacts. Huge collection of furniture, ceramics and also tiles. There are no name plates for each item, but there are booklet with all the information. Also the attendant of the museum, obviously very passionate about art nouveau can explain about items. The huhe window next to the staircase is not to miss. It really is a beautiful place.

Beautiful villa-museum associated with the Museum of Applied Arts. A must-visit for fans of Hungarian and pan-European Secessionist and Art Nouveau genres. Bálint, the museum’s guide, is very knowledgeable and keen to share interesting craftsmanship details and historical anecdotes. The Ráth György Villa also includes an exhibition space for contemporary applied artists and industrial designers. The current show featuring Kalmyk-Russian industrial designer Buliash Todaeva is outstanding!

Small jewelry boxes in the heart of cities, just like it is in Budapest. It is worth visiting for those who are receptive to the Art Nouveau artworks and equipment of the turn of the century (1900). My mother and I were celebrating her 60th birthday on the 28th of January. We have planned a visit at this beautiful villa in Budapest. She already had seen it, she just wanted to show me, that even Budapest has country house museum, not just London. I was so excited, as I work in a museum too, in the UK. The receptionist lady, short blond hair, with glasses, - did not say anything when I mentioned that this is my mother's birthday. They organize events also for special occasion's, just like a birthday,- that is the reason why I said it. Her answer was simply, 'you have to order that in advance',- even if I was just joking. Again, she never said 'happy birthday'. But that was fine, she is not a relative. After we paid, she insisted me to have their guidebook, even if I did not want to buy it, she gave it to me on loan. I said 'thank you very much, I really do not think, I need it, as I just want to enjoy my visit, take some pictures, and if I'm really interested in something, I'll ask someone.' She was literally angry, and she said 'but, nothing has any explanation up there in the museum..' She was so pushy, I had to say yes. On the first floor, I gave that book immediately to one of her colleagues. I wanted to take pictures, talk to my mother, and that's it. But, anyway, why should I have to explain myself to anyone in this kind of place? I get rid of the book, and I loved the house. Small, but nicely run and it has million artifacts in it. Beautiful, absolutely magnificent. We came down and I saw the receptionist sitting and watching YouTube at the front desk. When she saw me, she was demeaning her book back from me. I said to her 'your colleague has it on the first floor'. This was too much for her. 'You should have given the guide book back to me!!!' said angrily, and she went up to deal with it. I could not believe it. She put me a very uncomfortable situation. I felt so bad, even if I did not do anything wrong. It was obvious, that she had already problems in her life, who did not ever had a bad day,- but that does not mean that she could leave her professionalism behind. Absolutely terrible person! As I work in the same environment in London, I know, how hard could be to work in a museum,- or (let's face it) sometimes how boring. But we are always kind and nice to the visitors. There is no way, that I should be this angry or moody to a person. Costumers are not always right, that is fine, - but this sudden reaction was something unexpected, and absolutely unacceptable behavior. She made our visit, definitely unforgettable! I am a Hungarian citizen too, but after living in the United Kingdom, I forgot how Hungarian staff could be rude in shops, restaurants or museums like this. in London, this would have never happened!
