Óbudai Múzeum

Tourist attraction Museum

👍 Cute museum in a cosy little neighborhood of Óbuda. The toy exhibition is cool and sadly only one with an English explanation. People often mention museum, exhibitions, history, exhibition, staff, interesting, toys, floor, free, visit,

Great exhibitions can be seen on site. The permanent exhibition of retro toys on the first floor is, in my opinion, definitely world-class and should definitely be seen by visitors over 50 years old. On the ground floor, there is an ancient, medieval and modern presentation of local history, and there are temporary exhibitions as well. By the way, it's also great to see mockups. The floor is for retro games. I would like to highlight e.g. the table where you can sit down to socialize, on old scanned boards with real puppets and dice. The objects on display are in excellent condition and the lighting is excellent. I couldn't even list them, I have so many favorites, but e.g. the old USSR horse-pedal-bridle vehicle is an outstanding piece of the collection. Thank you for the great experience! You can't go upstairs with a wheelchair, I'm not sure if there is an elevator... There is a cloakroom/toilet, parking is possible in the surrounding streets, but not easily. Entry is free for Óbuda residents!

Last Sunday the 17th of September I went especially to the museum to visit it, in the context of the European Cultural Heritage Days. The museum is in fact listed as a location, here is the link to the official event page: http://oroksegnapok.gov.hu/helyszin/1284. According to the rules and principles of the event, all buildings and locations participating in the days shall provide free entry. I have been going to museums/archives/buildings and so on for 10 years, and the visit to listed places has always been free of charge. Sometimes, I have seen myself that some tours or entry to specific exhibitions were still requiring an entry ticket, BUT this was very well specified on the page of the site and was only applying to a part of the venue. This is not the case with this museum, which is listed on the portal of the event with no mention of an entry ticket. However, upon my arrival at the museum on Sunday afternoon, I was not greeted or welcomed. I asked if there was a cloakroom I could use and if I was allowed to enter the museum and exhibitions with my bag, and staff at the desk did not speak to me! After that, puzzled, I walked towards the exhibition space  and only then a member of staff basically shouted at me saying "this is not a free building, you can't walk there, you have to buy a ticket". The staff was really rude and the interaction deeply unpleasant. I decided to show on my phone the page of the European Cultural Heritage Days, which I mentioned to them, where the museum was listed, but I was not listened to and instead staff just kept saying "you have to buy the ticket". At that point, I decided to just leave, disappointed and offended, since after having been treated in such a manner, I lost the enthusiasm to actually visit the space. Staff should make the visitors feel welcomed and explain things in a totally different manner! Not to mention that I remain convinced that the visit to the museum should have been free of charge.

The toy museum offers more to adults than to children. I really liked the local history exhibition

It's a very creative place to tell the story of different games. The toy exhibition is very well done. I can recommend.

Well-managed local history museum of one of the most historical parts of Budapest, district three. They even made it with cobblestone : ) many of this nice, ancient parts of this district are destroyed decades ago for the sake of modern, soviet-type blockhouses. Here you still can find many memories of the classic era of Óbuda ("Ancient Buda", as they call it). In the another wing of Zichy Castle there is a quite professional collection of toys from different times too.

I have been here several times, the temporary and permanent exhibitions are always very interesting. I really like the museum, the "hospitality" of the workers here is also outstanding. Special thanks for the fact that dogs can also visit the exhibitions :) This is an example to follow, I hope that other institutions will catch up with this attitude. In any case, I advertise this opportunity among my friends with dogs.

Wonderful exhibits of the history of Obuda (there is a book with English but the exhibit is in Hungarian. I was loaned the book). The button exhibit was fabulous with great footage of manufacturing and the toy exhibit was really interesting. Loved it especially on a hot day. The staff members were helpful

I really enjoyed my time in this museum. Ground floors was about the history of life in Hungary, starting with the roman times. And the upper floor about children's toys. However with the information they gave, they almost never wrote the years things happened. Which really was missing. And the ground floor had absolutely no explanation in English. I would still suggest to visit it while you're in Obuda. Also when I went there the entry was free for the day and they had toys for children to play with on the upper floor, next to the toy exhibit

The place offers rich exhibitions with plenty of new information and a new way of looking at life! :) The museum has several exhibits about toys, games and contemporary art and 19th century literature as well as Trading and Hotel history :) Different exhibits are in different buildings though adjacent to each other. ✅👍🏻😎

Small, but friendly district museum, very helpful for studying local history, it is free to visit on the first Saturday of each month

This place is a little magic box there with very enthusiastic people (curators) who know interesting facts behind the exhibitions. We saw porcelains from a long closed factory that made very nice products from plates, cups, vases to little sculptures. If you like arts, like things that are a bit different from the ordinary museums with old pictures, that'll be your place! On the 1st floor now there is an exhibition of childrens' toys from a couple of years back.

Interesting to learn of Obuda's history through the ages and how it was once very different to how it appears now with massive socialist housing estates. Descriptions were in Hungarian only but the museum staff kindly lent me an English language guide book. Also a surprisingly interesting temporary exhibit of historic toys and games from East and West.

The Victor Vasarely museum has just (late June 2017) opened after a lengthy reconstraction. The collection is a gem, and the building itself is extraordinary (an old monastery?).
