Fascinating. Excellent collection of Hungarian Art. Best six hours spent in Budapest. Worth every penny! Didn't get a student discount (unfortunately). Would recommend it for art lovers. If you can spend hours looking at a painting, go right ahead. I wish someone had told us to have a big, hearty breakfast before going though. Hehe.

If you love art then don't plan anything else for the day when visiting this place. I started with the Special Exhibition of Art Deco which is seperate to the Permanent Exhibition in the Main part of the building. I loved all the posters in this exhibition, encompassing a whole range of artistic styles but all alluringly exotic and colourful, portraying exaggeration and sensationalism. The Permanent Exhibition across three floors is full of great art works, don't miss classics by Monet, Gauguin and Pissarro. The collection of Late Gothic Altarpieces is magnificent. I can't do justice to all the Art works here so have just mention a selection. Finally, for a great view across Pest and to the West, don't miss the viewpoint at the top of the Dome accessible via small stairs.

Yes, pricey to enter but IMO worth it. I really enjoyed the pre-Gothic and early Gothic art, sculptures and stands. The other half of the perm collection is devoted to 19th century and some 20th century art which is not my thing for the most part. Spent a couple hours in here. Photos allowed. Great views from the dome.

A great gallery, with some fantastic collections. I happened to be there to visit the Friday Kahlo exhibit, and it was stunning. Some paintings I had never seen of hers, and her story was well laid out for understanding. I loved the way there was a progression throughout her life in the way the pieces were set. All in all I would love to visit again and see everything more thoroughly. I would suggest 2-3hrs to see everything, and 3-4hrs if you want to take your time.

The Gerhard Richter exhibition was excellent. It's only on until November 28 so get your skates on if you want to see an interesting cross section of his work. Coffee and donuts in the museum cafe was a good start as is the view of the city from the museum's cupola.

Full of interesting historical and modern art. It took me 6 hours to walk it all and my legs were hurting like crazy and I was starving. There were places to sit and portable chairs, but no good place to get food. Only one coffee place, that was in honesty, pathetic. This place lacks a vending machine. That would make it perfect (or an actual good coffee place/backery/restaurant).

HUNGARIAN NATIONAL GALLERY The Hungarian National Gallery is situated within Buda Castle. Its entrance is located on the facade of the castle, on Savoyai Terrace with the Monument of Prince Eugene of Savoy on horseback, in the central wing with the dome. In essence, almost the entire massive Castle building, facing the Danube, is occupied by this specific museum. As a result, it's a fairly extensive museum with no predetermined path for visitors. The museum's collections encompass Hungarian art in all genres, including the works of numerous 19th- and 20th-century Hungarian artists. It houses Medieval, Renaissance, Gothic, and Baroque Hungarian art, including wood altars from the 15th century. Don't miss the opportunity to climb the stairs to the upper levels and catch a glimpse of the renowned Castle dome from the inside. Essentially, the dome is a modern concrete construction, as the entire Castle is a reconstructed version of what was destroyed during World War II and the subsequent events.

Fantastic museum with amazing displays of Hungarian art from ancient to contemporary times. If possible, check out the dome balconies which offer nice views to all sides of the castle.

It's a great center to observe and study different art pieces from some of Hungary's best artists from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The top floor covers some modern art pieces which didn't really appeal to me. The ground floor is the best with some beautiful examples of realism.

Very impressive collection of arts and well described explanation made it pretty easy for those who have zero knowledge in arts e.g. us to spend a good 3hrs here. Aside from permanent exhibitions, they have other 2-3 temporary exhibitions in different wings. Overall well organized and we enjoyed our time here.

Definitely a good stop when in Budapest! The art here was so pretty, and the paintings had such emotion, I could have looked at them for a while. Very beautiful landscape paintings, as well. Admission is free with the Budapest Card, but it's still a very reasonable cost without it. It was cool to see art that was specifically Hungarian, and see its national identity through art. There's also some works by famous artists there, like Monet!

Located at the top of the Buda castle hill, the national gallery holds a beautiful collection of Hungarian and global art, with three levels of galleries. We especially enjoyed the Hungarian collection dating back to the mid 15th century. Cost was reasonable, be wary of evening specialty hours that require additional tickets.

This museum has a good collection, but if I had to choose one, I would recommend the Budapest Art Museum. I regretted the attitude of the staff at the Hungarian National Gallery, who even had a racist streak. When I was buying my ticket, one of the female staff asked me where you were from. Then I replied that I was from France. This was because I had lived in France for many years and had legal residence status. But she interrupted me very, very sternly and looked at me with a critical eye because I had an Asian face. She said to me, "You, just only study in France; and you, are, from, China." Such an attitude made me feel very uncomfortable. Why did she interrupt me with such urgency and correct my identity? She wanted to make a clear distinction between me and Europe, especially France, where I had lived for a long time, in order to gain her sense of superiority as a real white European woman.

Fantastic collection! Wanted to go there for three hours but spend 6,5 and still couldn't see everything I wanted to. You should plan an entire day when you are interested in art. The audio guide in German was good, informative, but obviously a little old. Some of the paintings in the guide are now in the archive and the order is different. They have free English tours at 2 pm every day to different topics.

(Translated by Google) Wonderful collection. Everyone should see this! Three floors of visual culture, divided into epochs, await those wishing to watch. A beautiful panorama awaits those who venture to the dome. Definitely worth a look! There is also an elevator. The buffet is reopened, which awaits its visitors with pepper prices, but with a very clean and washroom. Nice card accepting place and, if I remember correctly, you can visit the permanent exhibition for free on the 3rd Saturday of every month. (Original) Csodálatos gyűjtemény. Ezt látnia kell mindenkinek! Három emelet vizuális kultúra korszakokra bontva várja a nézelődni vágyókat. Gyönyörű panoráma várja a kupoláig merészkedőket.

What a great showcase of Hungarian artists that have not received the attention they deserve. Benches throughout to sit while taking in the art and there is also a few rooms with comfortable seating if waiting for your group or needing a break. The only thing we saw that could use improvement is with the lighting. There were some pictures that no matter how we moved, closer, far away, left, right, it didn’t matter-there would be part of the painting we could not see from any angle due to the bad lighting. It was only with a few paintings though and did not take away from the overall enjoyment.

This is a really beautiful gallery. I’ve been to Budapest a couple times but only made the trip inside this time. My favourite section is actually the modern art on the top floor. Unfortunately the statues section was closed on the first floor the day I went, but I guess it’s a good reason to return! Helpful staff and a cheap entry price considering how great the art is. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

A lot of 19th century art, nothing really outstanding. A little bit of modern hungarian art but overall rather boring. All the art is exhibited in a very classical way. Not much creativity and invention. This museum has some potential but it calls for younger generation curator.

Great museum to go and see some Hungarian art pieces. At the time I visited the collection was 18th century and onward. I think it is best to start from the first floor (the earliest pieces) and continue your way up to the top floor where there is contemporary art.

Great moment at the archer exposition ! The rest was... Nice but not marvellous, the visit of the museum is not really interactive and a bit... Boring... They should do something about it and take the example of the archer exposition on the whole museum ! Big up for the guards in the museum, really really nice !

I love the Hungarian National Gallery because this museum is located in the beautiful castle district and is actually part of the castle. I think the area itself is worth to discover, not to talk about the gallery itself. They organize many temporary exhibitions such as Picasso, Frida, Mofigliani. Its a Great whole day programme walking around the area and enjoying the gallery.

If you're thinking of skipping it because there's so much else to do and see, DON'T. It's so incredibly well curated. Also there was a live choral and piano music performance just in the middle of it?! Incredible experience.

Not really visitor friendly. There are few descriptions of art pieces exposed, just a title most of the time, a short description would have been appreciated. Otherwise the place is beautiful, and the staff really kind.

Lovely museum in the castle district. The permanent exhibition has great pieces curated in a logical, interesting way. The temporary exhibit on turned out to be our favourite bit! The views from the dome overlooking the nearby buildings and over Pest are marvelous. Worth a visit!

Huge art museum with a wide and thorough selection of local art. I was lured in by the temporary Gerhard Richter exhibition (which was great!) and decided to check out the rest of the building as well. It was a great chance to see the Buda castle building from inside and even though it looks quite modernistic, it was still a nice experience. Even the entrance to the dome is included in the museum ticket price! The museum is a bit difficult to navigate at times and to really look at everything you’d need at least 2 hours.

Really nice gallery, 3 or 4 floors and lifts so accessible to everybody. A definite must see when in Budapest! The only downfall to this place is that the staff are very linger-y, which is a bit off putting when a solo traveller

It has old paintings to modern art. There are many statues. Paintings take you on a journey, they are like photographs. We spent two and a half hours in there. If you go to Budapest it is a place I recommend!!! it is located in the castle of the Buda.

We went there for the first time now. We will definitely revisit as the gallery is huge and can even be a full day activity. We stayed about 3 hours and only went through one and a half levels while about the same amount was left unchecked. We relaxed frequently at some pieces and just enjoyed the view, hence the long stay. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to walk around a peaceful place full of great and mind-blowing art.

  • 5/5 Diana P. 4 months ago on Google
I loved it, probably the gallery that was most worth a visit. I learnt about Hungarian artists (which were mostly unknown to me earlier) and got the chance to see the temporary exposition about Budapest's Golden Age. Do spend a few extra florins and visit it, you'll be amazed by the vintage postcards and before-afters of the city!

  • 5/5 Luiza 3 months ago on Google New
The building is superbe from the outside, not to mention the views! We went in the morning and the entrance was fast but later on there were queues. There are a few levels and different rooms, all deserve to be visited. I do not quite recommend the 20th century exposition/the last floor, a tad too bizarre for my taste. On the last floor there is a set of stairs that allows you to climb even higher and get a 360 view of the city through some windows.

Large National Art Gallery. Good place to spend a few hours if you really take time to view the art. Many different periods and mostly paintings, sculptures, and some wood carvings. Great place during cold, raining or extremely hot days. Can’t take your bag in but the do have free lockers for your bag if it fits and one is available.

  • 5/5 Venu J. 8 months ago on Google
Well appointed museum in a beautiful multi story building with great views, art and sculptures. Good place to visit if you’re interested in hungarian history, hungarian art history, and art history overall. Friendly for english speakers. The cafe is tiny and has barely any items but there just about the only minor issue. I wouldn’t recommend the audio guide as there are barely any art that has it and needs it. There are english descriptions next to most items. Art across centuries with a particular emphasis on hungarian art. It’s called the Hungarian National Gallery for a reason. It’s not the Louvre. But you won’t be disappointed.

First 2 floors are filled with exceptional art of the great paintors of the time. 3rd floor, is filled with minecraft blocks for the kids to enjoy. 4th floor is the surprise scenery. One thing I regret is that I didn't have enough battery to take more photos of the great art posted there.

Great museum. A lot of paintings of a hungarien painter and others. Very nice. Lots of tourists. Interior looks great. You have to leave your jackets and bags, rucksacks in the cloakroom where you get a number and there is no charge for that. You have souvenir shop and bar where you can refresh after or before exibition.

Very big museum, you need at least 5 hours, wish we had more time to see everything. The first floor had an amazing exhbition dedicated to Hunagrian artists (Karoly Ferenczy, Csok Istvàn,Mednyánszky) it was very interesting reading about their life and how it influenced ther artistic journey. Very nicely showcased, without overcrowding the paintings. "The Painter-Poet. Gyula Tichy, the Master of Hungarian Symbolism" is one of the most interesting exhbitions, so happy to see it DON'T MISS IT. Also very nice Impressionism Paintings and Christian Pieces that were very well preserved! The building is very astonishingly beautiful. The museum is one of the few we visited that allowed pictures! It has an EU under 25 discount.

This museum is a vibe! From the grandeur of the exterior to the attention to detail on the inside, everything about it is impressive. The line for tickets was not long, but it might be a good idea to buy them in advance, we arrived a few minutes after opening and it got crowded fast (understandable since it is one of the most popular museums in Budapest) It is a must see!

  • 5/5 Davide Z. 1 year ago on Google
Wonderful. The paintings are a pleasure to see and the general organization of the gallery is well made. The floors are divided based on the styles of the paintings. Here you can also find beautiful sculptures. You can visit it for free with the Budapest card. Closed on Mondays.

Situated at the top of the hill of Buda Castle, the most prominent architectural feature of the Hungarian National Gallery is the large dome that you can see from far away. Its collection is a must see for visitors who want to learn about Hungarian art and artists. Starting with medieval art collected from Hungarian churches and extending all the way to current times, the permanent collection gives visitors a comprehensive look at Hungarian art.

I did not know much about Hungarian art, so I visited without much expectation. But I had a great joy through sightseeing. The works of Hungarian artists based on the world art trend were mainly exhibited. Although it is not famous artists who are generally known, some works impressed even more. There are works related to Hungarian history as well as some works such as Gauguin and Monet. It will be a good experience if you take time to look around.

I visited this venue for the very first time in my life and I was impressed, how huge it is and how reach this exhibition/collection is, indeed. Especially the grandiose halls and paintings are those, which I felt in love with immediately, but the altars with wings from many centuries ago were also magnificent. It's totally overwhelming to walk through halls, in which kings were crowned only hundred years earlier... An amazing addition to the visit of the Gallery was the opportunity to enter into the dome over the entire palace in Buda. Sadly, on some places in the building were remains of the communistic/socialistic architecture seeable...

(Translated by Google) Spacious, magnificent roof-top with a panorama of Budapest, some paintings by French painters. The museum shop is very stocked with various souvenirs, the bar-restaurant offers little choice of food, moreover, the blonde barmaid is very unpleasant.

While traveling through Europe, I've come to many underrated bastions of art and culture. This museum is certainly one of them. The Hungarian styles and paints are unique and very much deserving to be cherished. Their usage of folklore and the nation's highly dramatic 19th century as inspiration has led to some of my favourite pieces that I have ever seen. Truly, this museum is worth every penny. I was saddened, however, that one section - the period between two world wars - was closed for technical difficulties. If dear reader, it is open. I ask you to enjoy it twice as much!

(Translated by Google) The artistic heritage of our bloodthirsty past from the early Gothic to the present day, and the best of everything, has been left by the storm of history. (Original) A vérzivataros múltunk képzőművészeti öröksége a kora gótikától napjainkig bezárólag, és mindenből a legjava, már amennyit a történelem vihara meghagyott.Amit mindenkinek látnia kellene hogy milyen csodákat alkottunk a középkor óta , amiből ilyen kevés megmaradhatott, természetesen az ország legszebb helyén az ország legszebb panorámájával.

There is no 'wow' effect if you have been to Saint-Petersburg's or Moscow's galleries. It's not necessary to spent time there.
