It is the largest funeral structure in Hungary, so there can be little doubt that the structure hides Hungary's most valuable dead. It occurred to me that it is like Napoleon's tomb in the case of France. The snarling lions (or rather panthers) next to the stairs leave little doubt: they will tear apart whoever dares to hurt the greatness sleeping its eternal dream. On April 1, 1894, the largest and most significant funeral in Hungary of all time took place. Lajos Kossuth was laid to rest in a temporary plot, about 70 meters to the left of his current mausoleum, along the road leading to the DeĂĄk mausoleum. Since Ferenc JĂłzsef prohibited state mourning, most people could attend the ceremony as private individuals. The funeral was organized by the capital, and Kossuth was buried as an official honorary citizen of Budapest. A tender for the design and construction of the mausoleum was announced on January 31, 1901. The winner was KĂĄlmĂĄn Gerster, who built the mausoleum in an eclectic style between 1903-1909. The statues - the genius defeating the lion, the crowned female figure, the lions by the entrance - were modeled by Alajos StrĂłbl. Lajos Kossuth's ornate sarcophagus stands in the center of the domed interior, and his family members, including two politicians' sons, rest in niches on either side. The mosaic covering the dome was made by Miksa RĂłth based on DezsƑ Kölber's cardboard.

"Lajos Kossuth's mausoleum was built by KĂĄlmĂĄn Gerster in an eclectic style between 1903-1909. Lajos Kossuth's ornate sarcophagus stands in the center of the domed interior, and his family members, including two politicians' sons, rest in niches on either side. The mosaic covering the dome was made by Miksa RĂłth based on DezsƑ Kölber's cardboard. The mausoleum was built after Kossuth was brought home, and his architect rests behind the mausoleum. According to the Kossuth cult, this is the highest mausoleum in the cemetery. The canopied stone sarcophagus between the Doric columns is symbolic, Kossuth rests in the crypt. It is also worth going into the crypt, you can enter it on the occasion of important holidays or on thematic walks organized by the cemetery.

The wonderful SĂrkert is worth a longer walk. The DeĂĄk and Kossuth Mausoleum can rarely be visited individually, on the Day of the Dead, March 15, heritage protection day, world guide day.

We visited it as part of a free walk organized by the SĂrkert. The high standard of management and the excellent condition of the Cemetery were both beyond expectations. Great experience, highly recommended category.

An impressive work, which, thanks to the renovation, has probably not been in such a wonderful condition since its construction. The fact that on the occasion of our visit we did not find a single flower or wreath here is a good indication of today's social state of mind, whereas nostalgic people bring carnations and wreaths to the grave of JĂĄnos KĂĄdĂĄr on a daily basis.
