It
is
the
largest
funeral
structure
in
Hungary,
so
there
can
be
little
doubt
that
the
structure
hides
Hungary's
most
valuable
dead.
It
occurred
to
me
that
it
is
like
Napoleon's
tomb
in
the
case
of
France.
The
snarling
lions
(or
rather
panthers)
next
to
the
stairs
leave
little
doubt:
they
will
tear
apart
whoever
dares
to
hurt
the
greatness
sleeping
its
eternal
dream.
On
April
1,
1894,
the
largest
and
most
significant
funeral
in
Hungary
of
all
time
took
place.
Lajos
Kossuth
was
laid
to
rest
in
a
temporary
plot,
about
70
meters
to
the
left
of
his
current
mausoleum,
along
the
road
leading
to
the
DeĂĄk
mausoleum.
Since
Ferenc
JĂłzsef
prohibited
state
mourning,
most
people
could
attend
the
ceremony
as
private
individuals.
The
funeral
was
organized
by
the
capital,
and
Kossuth
was
buried
as
an
official
honorary
citizen
of
Budapest.
A
tender
for
the
design
and
construction
of
the
mausoleum
was
announced
on
January
31,
1901.
The
winner
was
KĂĄlmĂĄn
Gerster,
who
built
the
mausoleum
in
an
eclectic
style
between
1903-1909.
The
statues
-
the
genius
defeating
the
lion,
the
crowned
female
figure,
the
lions
by
the
entrance
-
were
modeled
by
Alajos
StrĂłbl.
Lajos
Kossuth's
ornate
sarcophagus
stands
in
the
center
of
the
domed
interior,
and
his
family
members,
including
two
politicians'
sons,
rest
in
niches
on
either
side.
The
mosaic
covering
the
dome
was
made
by
Miksa
RĂłth
based
on
DezsĆ
Kölber's
cardboard.
