BE AWARE - In June 2023 CLOSED FOR PEDESTRIANS. Unfortunatelly, like more monuments in Budapest the bridge was completely closed for pedestrians so it could make you the city tour much more complicated and you can discover it only just in front of it. The nearest bridges are quite far walking distance from there. From further distance it looks impressive but not us much as for example Charles Bridge in Prague or Tower Bridge in London.

News update on bridge reopening: "Dec 13, 2022 Budapest's landmark Chain Bridge under reconstruction will reopen to buses, taxis, motorbikes and bicycles on December 16, 2022 in the afternoon, the Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) said on Tuesday. A ban for cars to use the bridge will remain in effect, BKK said in a statement. The bridge will reopen to pedestrians once the upgrade’s last phase is completed which is expected in the autumn of 2023, BKK said, adding that the reconstruction was going according to schedule" Review: The Chain bridge across the Danube River near the Parliament Building at night when lit up is quite breathtaking with all its surrounding architecture and centuries old history. Budapest is an amazing city and one of my favorites to visit and recommend to family or friends. While being a large city Budapest offers a friendly, safe, clean, welcoming atmosphere with wonderful people who are quite proud of their Country, city and heritage. Budapest Hungary offers tremendous sights, great restaurants, nightlife and a deep rich history plus all the modern amenities and conveniences of any major city from 5 star accommodations, dining, public transportation, infrastructure to entertainment; while still maintaining it's friendly small town historic charm.

Known as "the Chain Bridge" or as the Hungarians call it - "Széchenyi Lánchíd", this structure is one of the most important and ancient symbols of Budapest. The Chain Bridge was the idea of István Széchenyi and it was also thanks to him, that the bridge was finally constructed.

An amazing sight while in Budapest. But it can only be the lowest score when it is closed for pedestrians for several months while some traffic is still allowed. That is prioritizing that I cannot understand.

My experience on Széchenyi Chain Bridge was nothing short of extraordinary. Its timeless beauty combined with its historical importance make it a must-visit attraction in Budapest. Whether you are strolling across it during daylight or admiring its illuminated splendor at night, this bridge will leave you with lasting memories and a deep appreciation for human ingenuity. First and foremost, the bridge's design is truly breathtaking. The grandeur of its stone lions guarding each end and the intricate iron chains that hold it together are a testament to the skilled craftsmanship of its creators. Walking across this bridge feels like stepping back in time to an era when attention to detail and beauty were paramount

The Széchenyi Chain Bridge is a chain bridge that spans the River Danube between Buda and Pest, the western and eastern sides of Budapest, the capital of Hungary. Designed by English engineer William Tierney Clark and built by Scottish engineer Adam Clark, it was the first permanent bridge across the Danube in Hungary. It was opened in 1849. It is anchored on the Pest side of the river to Széchenyi (formerly Roosevelt) Square, adjacent to the Gresham Palace and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and on the Buda side to Adam Clark Square, near the Zero Kilometre Stone and the lower end of the Castle Hill Funicular, leading to Buda Castle. Zero Kilometre Stone Budapest's first kilometre zero landmarks were emblematically placed on the threshold of the royal palace but were moved to its current location after the Chain Bridge was completed in 1849.

One of The Hungarian Danube’s signature when visiting this uniquely beautiful city. The bridge connects two sides of this capital city and we can see colossally picturesque river view. What a joyful moment and walk along during spring time!

Beautiful old style bridge, originally built in 1849 and rebuilt in 1949, using chains at the ends of the bridge to anchor the structure. (Suspension bridge) Great place to cross the Duna since it has tourist attractions on both sides of it. Gorgeous place to take pictures and take in the sights of all the old wonderful buildings that the center of the city and the riverfront has to offer. Scenic area that's definitely worth it to visit if you're in the area.

This bridge has a very good presence connecting between two important pieces of land with its lions guarding its entrance and exit reflecting the power of good art that may take you to another level of amazement. I enjoyed the place but I think it needs a small area of chairs with sun protection to better spend time at this amazing spot. You can see the parliament building and the fisherman castle from this location.

The chain bridge gives the city its character and soul. It is a splendid landmark of the 19th century and it can be best viewed from the Buda Castle, Fisherman Bastion or by taking a Danube River tour. You can’t cross the bridge by foot but it is still worth it to view it from afar be it during the daytime or at night.

The chain bridge is built on the Danube river which connects the Buda & Pest side. The eastern & western side of Budapest. Overall construction of the bridge is fantastic. Shall have been great if this bridge was only for pedestrians. To give it more charm. With today several vehicles commuting on the bridge. It becomes difficult to take a stroll and is quite tiny to walk on the sides It's ok to visit one time. But not again 😔

Absolutely magnificent! The lions, the views from it, the views it is in it, the walk on it, Great bridge. The only thing that could be better is if there are no vehicles and it's just pedestrian. But even now it's awesome. And the lights at night make it glow and shine in gold.

One of the iconic bridges in Europe, opened in November 1949. It is a chain suspension bridge and a monument that evokes Hungarian nationalist feeling of the mid-19th century and to Hungary's recovery from the destruction of the Second World War. A landmark, easily recognizable both day and night

(Translated by Google) The Bridge Association was founded in 1832 under the leadership of Count István Széchenyi, the aim of which was to build the first permanent bridge between Buda and Pest. This was the first permanent bridge on the Hungarian section of the Danube. After Count Széchenyi's study trip to England, William Tierny Clark proposed a plan for a three-span, stone-pillar reinforced-permanent suspension bridge. Construction began in 1839, with Adam Clark as the construction manager. The foundation stone was laid in 1842, in the Danube riverbed, at the Pest pillar. Construction was also hampered by an accident and the war of independence, and the Austrians repeatedly tried to blow it up - unsuccessfully. The bridge was handed over to traffic in 1849, and since 1852 four proud lions have adorned the bridgeheads. There was also an omnibus on the bridge. The first major renovation and conversion works became necessary in 1914, when the official name of the bridge was Széchenyi Chain Bridge. The destruction of World War II did not spare the bridges in Budapest either: the Chain Bridge was blown up on January 18, 1945 by retreating German troops. Reconstruction began in 1947, and efforts were made to use the rescued chains during the works. Slightly altered to the original plans, the track used by the cars and the gate of the pylons were widened during the renovation. The rebuilt bridge was handed over to traffic on November 20, 1949, the 100th anniversary of the opening of the original bridge. A hidat 1849-ben adták át a forgalomnak, 1852 óta négy büszke oroszlán díszíti a hídfőket. A hídon omnibusz is közlekedett. évfordulóján adták át a forgalomnak.

(Translated by Google) Széchenyi lánchíd. Chain Bridge, which we had the opportunity to see during a trip in 2018. Another sightseeing point in Budapest. The Chain Bridge can be said to be one of the most important monuments of Budapest, additionally located in the center, close to other important attractions of the Hungarian capital. This particular bridge is one of the most recognizable in Budapest, and as a technical monument, it also has a great cognitive and historical value. At the time when it was built, it must have been considered a true miracle of technology, and even now it makes a great impression. The bridge was erected in the years 1839-1849, according to the design of the English engineer William Tierney Clark, and its name comes from the name of a Hungarian politician - István Széchenyi. (all information can be found on the internet). This beautiful Chain Bridge connects two parts of the city. It is located in a central location close to the main attractions. It gives many opportunities to take great photos during the day and at night. I recommend! (Original) Széchenyi lánchíd. Most Łańcuchowy, który mieliśmy okazję zobaczyć podczas wycieczki w 2018 roku. Ten właśnie most jest jednym z najbardziej rozpoznawalnym w Budapeszcie, a jako zabytek techniki ma dodatkowo duży walor poznawczy i historyczny. The Széchenyi Chain Bridge (Hungarian: Széchenyi lánchíd) is the first permanent bridge across the Danube river. Now it's closed for reconstruction.

This famous landmark in Budapest is a true masterpiece of engineering that captures the essence of the city. The Chain Bridge is an iconic attraction that is a must-see for anyone visiting Budapest. As you cross the bridge, the views of the Danube River and the city skyline are simply breathtaking. The Chain Bridge is well-maintained, and its structure is impressive. The service provided by the staff is commendable, as they are always available to provide information and assistance. The ambiance is serene, and the sound of the river flowing beneath the bridge is soothing. One aspect that makes the Chain Bridge special is its historical significance. It was the first permanent bridge to connect Buda and Pest, two parts of the city that were once separate. This bridge played a pivotal role in the development of Budapest as a modern city. However, the only reason why I didn't give the Chain Bridge a full 5-star rating is because it can get overcrowded at times, especially during peak tourist season. This can make it difficult to fully appreciate the bridge's beauty and take in the stunning views of the city. To improve this, I suggest limiting the number of visitors allowed on the bridge at any given time to avoid overcrowding. In conclusion, I highly recommend the Chain Bridge to anyone visiting Budapest. It is a historical gem that offers stunning views and an unforgettable experience. I left the bridge feeling amazed and inspired. I would definitely come back to see it again and appreciate its beauty all over again. Thank you to the staff and owners for maintaining such a remarkable attraction.

OPEN! The renovation is over in the end of 2022. This year you can cross by taxi and public transport and by car as well, if soldiers doesn't stop you. Dear Mr Google please this cross needs a freshening update.

Its expansive views and incredible colors are simply breathtaking. The Széchenyi Chain Bridge, also known as Chain Bridge, is a historic suspension bridge that spans the Danube River in Budapest, Hungary. It was the first permanent bridge to connect the two sides of the city, Buda and Pest, and was opened in 1849. The bridge was designed by the English engineer William Tierney Clark and was a major engineering feat at the time. The bridge has become an iconic symbol of Budapest and is one of the most popular landmarks in the city.

Pedestrian access to the Chain Bridge (Széchenyi Lánchíd) was closed during my visit to Budapest in early March 2023. I was able to enjoy great views of the bridge and river Danube from the trail along the Danube and Buda Castle Hill.

Not recommend this place. Firstly, it’s very dirty and overpriced . At 10 a.m. there were already a lot of people . Take slippers with you , other way you’ll pay ~10$ for them. Personal is very rude, they can scream at you just because they can 😑 Thermal pool is nice but very very dirty, there is a possibility to have some mushrooms or virus. Cabin without light. Part of saunas don’t work. This place for sure needs renovation!

Beautifull place, great architecture and atmosphere, usually crowded and one of main tourist gathering place as it is surrounded by lots of sightseeings, bars & restaurants and shopping area

  • 3/5 Michela B. 11 months ago on Google
Very nice bridge to see from afar but due to renovation you cannot walk on it and from the Buda side you either need to walk along the road for cars ( not good) or go back quite a bit until you can get in the road above it. Very nice in pictures though

Closed both ways for pedestrians, no signs or warnings until you’re at the bridge - in the red-hot heat, great job guys!

The most famous bridge in Budapest, also a tourist attraction.

  • 4/5 Julia S. 9 months ago on Google
The bridge is beautiful and in a great location. However, beware that as of July 2023, no pedestrian crossing is available. Only buses, taxis/Bolt, food service vehicles may cross without a fine (looked like bicycles were okay possibly). Very easy to grab the bus or a Bolt and get across the bridge. Once it reopens, it will be great!

Not the most spectacular bridge I have seen and would personally rank it as number 2/3 in Budapest. All that said it offers a very beautiful view. Best is to sit close on one of the boat bars/restaurants and look towards the castle at night. It makes for a very memorable evening.

CHAIN BRIDGE The Szechenyi Chain Bridge, adorned with ornate cast iron decorations, spans the Danube River, linking the Buda and Pest sides of Budapest. It holds the distinction of being Hungary's first permanent Danube bridge, inaugurated in 1849. From the Pest side, it originates near Szechenyi Square and the Gresham Palace, while on the Buda side, it commences from Adam Clark Square, adjacent to the Zero Kilometre Stone and the lower station of the Castle Hill Funicular ascending to Buda Castle. Named after its supporter Istvan Szechenyi, it's commonly known as the Chain Bridge. Funding was significantly contributed by Greek merchant Georgios Sinas, whose name is inscribed on the bridge's southwestern foundation on the Buda side. In the turmoil of World War II, retreating German forces destroyed the bridge on January 18, 1945, leaving only its towers standing. However, it was meticulously reconstructed and reopened in 1949. As of March 2021, the bridge has been temporarily closed for vehicular traffic due to renovation. During our visit to Budapest, though vehicle movement was permitted, pedestrian access remained restricted. Local police informed us that, coincidentally, the bridge was set to fully reopen just a few days after our departure.

For me this is the most beautiful bridge I have ever seen. I’ve seen it by day and by night and I can say it was well taken care of it. I think the paint on the metalic parts was recently renewed. The sculptures on it are nice, the lions that guard it at both ends are also giving a nice vibe. Also, when you go by boat under it is an interesting sensation. A very nice landmark I could say.

Massive bridge on the Dunabe river. Engineering marvel. Just soaked into its beauty at the night time when the lights lit up. It can be viewed from the buda castle, cruise with the panoranic view.

The Széchenyi Chain Bridge is a captivating sight with its array of sculptures, notably the majestic lions at each end. The intricate metalwork throughout the bridge is a testament to craftsmanship, showcasing impressive details. Stunning bridge, architecture and design. Especially at night if you want to walk alongside the river or probably take a boat cruise in the evening. Windy area and might want to wear gloves, especially during winter/Autumn. You can see the bridge from the funicular ride as well.

One of the most impressive bridges I can remember of. Splendid. It competes with the Parliament for the title of greatest city landmark. It is a bridge of a certain era, still with massive stone pillars but already going for iron and being suspended even if not at a great height. By the time of its construction (mid XIX century) the span was one of the longest in the world. Very decorated as it was then mandatory for a royal capital, with big sculpted lions similar to those of London's Trafalgar Square.
