Sounds like a cool place to visit because of its description but there really isn’t much to see. You don’t go into any tunnels or anything, just a few meters from the entrance. The only reason to go up there is the view of the bridge and the Danube.

A “must visit place”! Just on your way to “Statue of the liberty”. Starting your walk from “Liberty bridge” you have about 5-10 minutes through very nice alleys and small beautiful park. Enjoy your stay in Budapest!

GELLERT HILL CAVE The Gellert Hill Cave is part of a network of caves nestled within Gellert Hill. It's also known as Saint Ivan's Cave, named after a hermit who resided there and is said to have utilized the natural thermal water from a muddy lake beside the cave to assist the sick. Please note that the entrance to the cave is not through the charming, almost fairytale-like building along the main road, Szent Gellert rkp, parallel to the Danube. Instead, it's located on an elevated platform, guarded at the corner by the statue of Saint Stephen positioned next to his horse, just across from the Gellert Baths. Inside, the cave comprises several interconnected chambers that function as a chapel. As your exploration of the cave concludes, you'll find yourself in a hall – the only accessible part of the Pauline Monastery, perched upon the rocky hill. Conversely, the elevated monastery, visible from Szent Gellert rkp, is not open to visitors. Similarly, the cavernous chambers and the spring accessible through the entrance I mentioned earlier are not available to the public. Nevertheless, the Gellert Hill Cave remains an absolute must-see tourist attraction.

A very beautiful church that is inside of a cave! I haven’t seen anything like it and it looks absolutely amazing. Gellért Hill Cave even offers student discount on entry, which I really appreciated as it made our visit so cheap. The man at the front was really friendly and kind and gave us audio guides to take us through the history of the cave church in English. The place itself is beautiful and it’s definitely worth checking out if you’re in Budapest.

I came to this place after a long walk in the sun. I wanted a cool environment to relax my body. And I stumbled upon this perfect place. The entry fee with audio guide was just 2 Euros. In the audio guide you get to know about the history of the place and some aspects of the history of Budapest. Its like a church in a cave with depictions of special events in the form of sculptures (and also a washroom if you need one after a long walk 😅). The environmental is serene and relaxing.

THE BEST VIEW IN HUNGARY -Walk the Hill all the way up to enjoy the paths the trees and the small parks with the beautiful gardens. -At the top of the Hill enjoy the view and take some pictures -Then at the other side you will meet the Cave. A symbolic amount of money to pass the entrance. They give you a small device that describes you the cave step by step. Don’t miss the chance

May be beautiful, but we don’t know, because the staff apparently decided to go home early. Too bad we walked across town to be sure we got here with plenty of time before closing, only to find the place abandoned at 6:25 on a Monday evening.

It was very beautiful, the ticker was cheap... also if I think that you should not pay to enter in a church, but in any cases I recommend it.

One of the best bang for the buck experiences in Budapest. Entry fee is just about a couple of euros and you get an audio guide that details the history of the church as you move through it. You will be reminded of how the very first Christians had to hide in caves to escape persecution and this place served at times the exact same function Temperature inside is pleasant, it stays at around 20 degrees both in summer and winter due to the effect of the thermal waters in the hill The gift shop is quite large and has plenty of good quality items The fellow who gave me the ticket is very friendly and knowledgeable and likes to interact with visitors

(Translated by Google) 1The rock church consists of two parts: the upper, ancient cave (St. John's Cave, later Lourdes Cave) and a lower, artificially formed rock cavity system located inside the mountain. The Hungarian Pauline Order reopened the church and monastery on August 27, 1989, when the communist regimes collapsed. The papal nuncio blessed the new granite altar, designed by Győző Sikota On December 3, 2008, on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of the papal approval of the Pauline Order, Cardinal Peter Erdő, Archbishop Juliusz Janusz, Apostolic Nuncio, Izydor Matuszewski, General of the Order, University church. Historic, national, cultural, religious and natural heritage and values meet in a unique way in the rock church. It is definitely worth admiring the church on the hillside (Original) 1A sziklatemplom két részből áll: a felső, ősi barlangból (Szent Iván-barlang, majd utóbb Lourdes-i Barlang) és egy alsó, a hegy belsejében elhelyezkedő, mesterségesen kialakított sziklaüreg rendszerből. Mindenképpen érdemes megcsodálni a hegyoldalban elhelyezkedő templomot

It was a fabulous experience to go there and to know that amount of history about the place, the place is dark a little, but it's a cave so it should be. They have also gift shop that offers cards. You can sit and listen to the audio guide, and you can take as many photos as you want.

Small, but interesting. Lovely walks and views in the area, and cheap to get in (which is good, because unless you're religious you'll only be spending 20 or so minutes in it). Worth visiting as a rest stop on your way up Gellert Hill.

(Translated by Google) The chapel in the cave is extremely impressive. You can watch it on your own with Audiogide. Unfortunately, it does not contain information about everything. Each information point on the wall is hard to spot! You can check it for an entrance fee, the cleaner's loud vacuum cleaner was a bit confusing, I couldn't get around during the shooting. About 20 years ago I visited here several times at Mass, then it had a different atmosphere. Currently, 5 Pauline monks live in the monastery. (Original) Rendkívül impozáns a barlangban kialakított kápolna. Audiogide-dal önállóan végig lehet nézni. Sajnos nem mindenről van benne információ. Az egyes tájékoztatási pontokat a falon nehéz észrevenni! Belépődíj ellenében lehet megnézni, kicsit zavaró volt a takarító hangos porszívója, a fényképezés során se tudtam kikerülni. Kb.20 évvel ezelőtt többször jártam itt misén, akkor más hangulata volt.Jelenleg 5 pálos szerzetes él a kolostorban.

Great story well worth the visit. Audio guides could be more succinct. Well maintained location - fee entry. Will not take more than 30- 45 mins to visit depending on how involved you get with the narrative. Conveniently opposite Budapest's 19th Century bridge across the Danube. Also immediately opposite baths.

The Chapel in the caves is so beautiful and full of history! We really enjoyed the very well priced self-guided audio tour (was about 550 HUF per person). It was informative and took about 30 minutes. The man working the ticket desk was very kind and we asked him any questions we had and he was able to provide more facts and with great enthusiasm! Recommended to visit if you are in town for a visit.

My visit to Sziklatemplom in Budapest was a journey through time and a captivating exploration of history. This unique underground church, nestled within the Buda Castle Hill complex, is an architectural marvel with a rich and fascinating past. As I descended into the rock-carved chambers, I couldn't help but be awed by the serenity and beauty of this place. Sziklatemplom, also known as the Cave Church, has a history dating back to the 13th century, and it served as a refuge during World War II and the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. The church's interior is adorned with stunning frescoes and religious icons, creating an atmosphere of quiet contemplation. The underground setting adds a layer of mystique, making it a truly unique spiritual sanctuary. My visit was a blend of historical immersion and a moment of quiet reflection, and I left with a deeper appreciation for Budapest's rich and complex history. Sziklatemplom is a hidden gem that shouldn't be missed for both its historical significance and its serene beauty.

What a wonderful place this is I believe it is very sacred to the Hungarian people to . Budapest in my humble opinion is a fantastic city. A city fuĺ of contrast rich to poor religious to atheist strong to weak . But this has to be my favourite place here . So peaceful and beautiful . I have never been the brightest spark in the world but there must be something special about this place there just must be . St Paul's cave in Malta and here have helped me for one find peace, Walsingham, too . Thank you Hungary for letting me visit . The UK in my opinion could learn a lot from you . No litter clean streets polite people and a feeling of safety . A city I would love to live in , if only I could understand what you were saying . Joke don't arrest me . I have learnt that St Stephen wasn't only the first Catholic Saint but also the first king of hungary. A bit drunk and rambling but I thoughraly enjoyed my visit to your capital . I have a hungarian friend in the uk who is really cool , I can now see why . Thank you again for a great holiday.

(Translated by Google) The rock church is beautiful. Definitely a must watch. "Based on its natural and cultural-historical values, it has been a highly protected cave since 1982. On the south-eastern side of Gellért Hill, about 25 m above the Danube level, on the border of the Eocene abrasion breccia on the Triassic dolomite, the cave entrance two natural cabins joined in. The current flight system was created artificially during the construction of the rock chapel. The cave is probably named after Pest (Slavic origin, meaning cave or kiln). The entrance hall and the hut built at the mouth of the cave were inhabited by poor families until the turn of the 20th century. cave on the model of Lourdesi, on the proposal of Minister Gyula Pfeiffert, Kálmán Lux and based on the artist's artistic plans, it was converted into a church in 1925-26, creating new passages by blasting. The rock chapel maintained by the Pauline order. For decades, the bones of the poet Benedek Virág rested here. On Easter 1951, the furnishings of the cave, in connection with the Grősz trial, were destroyed in a single night, and its entrance was walled up for security reasons. In 1961, at the suggestion of Hubert Kessler, the Institute for Water Management Research established a karst monitoring station in the cave, and after its termination, the area was used as a warehouse. After the change of regime, the church got the cave back for utilization as early as 1989. After the re-establishment of the rock chapel, it was consecrated in 1992. In addition to the design of the interior, the concrete wall closing and disfiguring the entrance was replaced by an artificial wrought iron gate, making the side of the hill facing Gellért Square spectacular. Office: K. Székely (2003): Highly protected caves in Hungary. " (Original) Gyönyörű a sziklatemplom. Mindenképp meg kell nézni. "Természeti és kultúrtörténeti értékei alapján 1982 óta fokozottan védett barlang. A Gellért-hegy délkeleti oldalában kb. 25 m-rel a Duna szintje felett, a triász dolomitra települt eocén abráziós breccsa határán, hévizek oldó hatására kialakult, hatalmas szádával nyíló barlang öblös bejárati teremhez két természetes eredetű fülke csatlakozott. A jelenlegi járatrendszert mesterségesen, a sziklakápolna kiépítésekor hozták létre. A barlang valószínűleg Pest (szláv eredetű, jelentése barlang vagy kemence) névadója. A monda szerint a barlangban egy jóságos remete, Iván élt, s a hozzá zarándokló betegeket a barlang előtt fakadó forrás vizével gyógyította, ezért gyakran Iván, vagy Szent Iván barlangként is említik. Bejárati termét és a barlang szájába épített kunyhót a XX. sz. fordulójáig szegény családok lakták. Előterét a Duna szabályozása és a Szabadság-híd építése során teljesen megváltoztatták. A barlangot a Lourdesi mintájára, Pfeiffert Gyula miniszteri biztos javaslatára, Lux Kálmán építész művészi tervei alapján 1925-26-ban templommá alakították, robbantással új járatokat létesítve. A sziklakápolnát, melyet a pálos rend tartott fenn.

Beautiful chapel with gorgeous interior. The man who works there as a staff was really kind. We could listen to some audio in English about the history of the chapel. I can recommend going here 🙂

Arrived at 18:15 and there was a board saying ‘no more visits’ (their website states it’s opened until 7:30). I really wanted to visit so it was a major disappointment.

Friendly staff and cheap visit (600HUF), perfect getaway from the heat. An audioguide is included with the visit, it's far from perfect (A bit slow and too talkative) but interesting nonetheless.

(Translated by Google) A great place. The hosts are very friendly, they live on the first floor but as if they were not there. Large apartment in a modern design, parking space, three bedrooms, large living room with TV, fully equipped kitchen with a dining table for 6 people, two bathrooms, one with bathtub, washbasin, second with shower and toilet, and a second separate toilet. The swimming pool is large only for us, clean and hot water, large terrace, barbecue or cauldron place. To the nearest Lidl shop 200 m, to Lake Balaton 800 m (the owners provide bicycles). When there is an opportunity, we will definitely return there. We recommend 100 percent. (Original) Super miejsce. Gospodarze bardzo życzliwi, mieszkają na piętrze ale jakby ich nie było. Basen duży tylko dla nas czysta i ciepła woda, duży taras, miejsce do grillowania lub robienia kociołka. Do najbliższego sklepu Lidl 200 m ,do jeziora Balaton 800m (właściciele udostępniają rowery). We don't have to deal with them! (Original) Nagyon szeretem Pal Csaba atyàt!Nem tudom ki ès mièrt tàmadjàk,de vannak mindig ès mindenhol negativ ,rosszindulatù ès ràèrős emberek!
