Raoul Wallenberg was a Swedish diplomat, and humanitarian. He is remembered for saving tens of thousands of Jews in Nazi Occupied Hungary during the Holocaust from German Nazis and Hungarian Fascists during the later stages of World War II. The statue was erected in 1953 in an essentially hidden place, in front of the pharmaceutical factory in Debrecen, as a decorative statue, as a symbol of the fight against diseases. The monument became a symbol of the pharmaceutical company. At the initiative of the Wallenberg Sculpture Committee, established in 1998, a copy of the statue was erected in Szent István Park in 1999.
