My experience at Kopan was life changing. My boyfriend and I did the 5 day Mind and Meditation training course in October 2022 and for both of us, it has fundamentally changed the way we think about ourselves, relationships, love, and life in general. This place is incredibly special, from the buildings and setting, to the monks and nuns (big shout out to Khadro, the most amazing nun that was patient, compassionate and kind with all of her teachings and guided meditations - explaining why we meditate, how we meditate and picking apart concepts such as love and death), to the people that you meet during the course. I loved not having my phone for 5 days (shocking). I loved the silence we observed from after dinner until lunch the next day. I loved the group discussions. All I can say is wow. If you show up with an open mind and an open heart, you have the potential to heal yourself in ways that you may never have thought were possible. I’ll see you again soon Kopan ❤️

I’ve spent in Kopan over a week learning about meditation and Buddhism. And it was an amazing experience! The monastery is a perfect environment to spend with no exposure to external distractions. I can highly recommended!

The information on Google isn't updated, and turned out that nobody is allowed to enter but the students only. I don't know how it used to be in past, but for me, as a person who enjoys studying different cultures and philosophies(especially Buddhism), it's strange that they're isolating themselves. Based on the comment prior, I understand that some people might have been disrespectful in this holy place, but I think other preventive methods could be applied rather than closing it off for everyone. Despite of a slightly far way, at least we could breathe some fresh air on that hill. I hope that all the religions of the world will appreciate those who want to learn more about them.

My friend and I walked for about an hour to get there at around 3.50 pm but the security guy didn't let us come in. He just used the body language and Nepali, didn't speak English so we couldn't understand the reason. A waiter of a nearby restaurants told us to come in the early to be able to get inside that was helpful to know. The view from this place was great. The road to get here also has some beautiful view point. But quite dusty and many rubbish...

I wanted to explore Kopan Monastery on the third day of travel but then cab drivers I interacted with suggested that it wouldn't be a nice idea to visit this monastery as roads were not clear. But I still wanted to visit it once before coming back to India as I read great reviews of this place and also witnessed some amazing scenery. So, on the last day in Nepal, I finally visited this monastery and clicked lots of pictures. I talked to one monk there who has been residing in the monastery for 22 years and he has been there since his childhood. I asked him 'Do you practice celibacy?" to which he replied, "Yes, I do". While walking from pillar to post in the monastery I could feel that he was living in heaven and made the right choice for this life.

Nice view from the outside and not too crowded, which make the place more attractive and beautiful. Definitely worth the visit. However, they don't allow visitors to enter inside the monastery. The place has a great atmosphere and peaceful.

Visiting Kopan Monastery was a truly surreal and enriching experience. Nestled just north of Boudhanath in the Kathmandu valley, the monastery sits atop a picturesque hill, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding terrain. Its serene ambiance, coupled with the clean, crisp air, creates an atmosphere conducive to inner reflection and spiritual growth. The monastery's architecture is a testament to Tibetan Mahayana Buddhism's rich heritage, and its design exudes a sense of tranquility that immediately puts one at ease. Upon entering, two stunning stupas greet visitors, each exuding a sense of ancient wisdom and spirituality. What struck me most about Kopan Monastery was its serene silence. It's a place where one can truly escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, allowing for deep contemplation and meditation. I spent several hours in the Kopan central library, surrounded by a vast collection of Buddhist texts and teachings. The library's ambiance was both peaceful and inspiring, making it an ideal place for self-discovery. The monks and lamas at Kopan, ranging from seven to sixty years old, are deeply committed to their spiritual journey, and their presence adds to the monastery's authenticity. As a visitor, I felt welcomed and embraced by the warmth of the Kopan community. In summary, Kopan Monastery offers a unique opportunity to connect with Tibetan Mahayana Buddhism's profound teachings in a setting of natural beauty and serenity. It's a place where the mind can find stillness, and the soul can embark on a journey of self-discovery.

It’s a bit of a walk if you don’t want to use a taxi or a motorbike, but the tranquil gardens and buildings worth the visit. Keep in mind that it is a functioning monastery. There are restricted areas, a dress code and rules to conduct yourself by.

Such a special place! Would recommend the 10-day Introduction to Buddhism course to anyone seeking to live a more fulfilling and meaningful life, to understand their own minds or just to learn a bit more about Tibetan Buddhism (see their website for schedule). The teachers were very good and the fully vegetarian meals we had were amazing, I’m already missing the peanut/almond butter :)

Buddhism is the religion of salvation, peace, mindfulness and self-control. I loved this place and I wanna say this is my top favourite place in the entire country of Nepal. It was so peaceful and relaxing with pin drop silence. It is very comfortable and safe with great food available especially in the canteen. The only thing which I didn't like was the gesture of the security guard here who didn't like us staying here for long because we were apparently "non-Buddhists".

It is fantastic place. A place where one can learn and practice Buddhism. You must follow some basic rules regarding the clothes you wear, habit of drinking and smoking etc. For the inner transformation, any one from any corner of the world can come for November course during the month of November.

Buddhist Monastery. Tourist Not allowed. Nestled amidst the serene hills of Kathmandu, the Kopan Monastery stands as a beacon of tranquility and spiritual enlightenment. My visit to this sacred place was a transformative experience that left a lasting impression on my soul. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted by a sense of serenity that permeated the air. The monastery's peaceful ambiance, coupled with the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, immediately put me at ease. The meticulously maintained gardens and traditional architecture added to the ethereal atmosphere, creating an environment that is truly conducive to introspection and inner peace. The teachings and practices offered at the Kopan Monastery are deeply enriching. The resident monks and nuns, known for their wisdom and compassion, imparted profound insights on Buddhist philosophy and meditation. Through their gentle guidance, I was able to delve deeper into my spiritual journey and gain a renewed perspective on life. The daily meditation sessions provided a much-needed respite from the chaos of everyday life, allowing me to find solace and clarity within. The vegetarian meals served at the monastery's dining hall were not only delicious but also nourishing for the body and mind. The mindful preparation and the emphasis on simplicity and gratitude were evident in every bite, making each meal a meditative experience in itself. Beyond the teachings and practices, the Kopan Monastery offers a variety of retreat programs and workshops that cater to individuals at different stages of their spiritual path. Whether you are a novice seeking an introduction to Buddhist philosophy or an experienced practitioner looking to deepen your understanding, there is something for everyone. In addition to the spiritual aspects, the monastery also engages in philanthropic initiatives, supporting local communities and educational projects. Witnessing the positive impact they have on the surrounding area further reinforced my admiration for this remarkable institution. My time at the Kopan Monastery was truly a journey of self-discovery and spiritual growth. I left with a sense of profound peace and a renewed commitment to living a more mindful and compassionate life. If you are seeking solace, wisdom, and a deeper connection with yourself, I wholeheartedly recommend a visit to the Kopan Monastery in Kathmandu.

Great place to study Buddhism. Great staff and overall good place to be at. My room had great views and was light and clean. All the teachers are well educated within the lineage educational system. The monks are humorous and clever and the people I met during the courses were kind and great people to be around. I had one of the best Buddhist experiences.

Very special place where westerners have the opportunity to take courses on Buddhism in a functioning monastary. Perched on the top of a hill, overlooking the Kathmandu Valley, the setting is so well suited for retreats. You have a little distance from the whiz and whir of Kathmandu whilst also never loosing sight. I took 3 short courses over a month and enjoyed each and every one. Teachers are very knowledgeable, the content is scheduled well, meals are varied and delicious and the accommodation is also very comfortable. Highly recommended.

I had a really nice 'private stay' at Kopan for 4 nights. The monastery and compound is beautiful, overlooking Kathmandu. Hearing the monks' pujas at night was incredible. The optional spiritual program was good; some of the monks dont have great English; the young German guy leading the meditation sessions was excellent. Great library. Good cafe. A wonderful place for learning, self reflection and peace.

An aerial and vertical view of Kathmandu, Kapan Gumba supplies you the real air flow of original Kathmandu. Stand on the edge, see the Kathmandu view and feel the air, it narrates you the Kathmandu anecdote and brings you closer to self.

Kopan Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery near Boudhanath, on the outskirts of Kathmandu, Nepal. It is a member of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition, an international network of Gelugpa dharma centers, and once served as its headquarters.

So serene and calming. The view next to the cafe is breath taking as you can see Kathmandu. It's a perfect place to do meditation, learn dharma via their classes or participate in the pujas (prayers). You can also do Kora (circumenvulate) at their lovely stupas to create more merits. In short a must go if you are a Buddhist practitioner and a must try for general people.

Went kopan monastry and nunnery with husband and friends. We drove there though road were bad.Managed to gave 160sets of toothpaste, brush and towel to the the monks and nuns. The head monk of the monastry brought us around showing us stupa of great master and a garden exhibit that depicts Buddha's life. We were warmly invited into the nunnery although it was during lunch time. The nunnery were making incense powder and stick from their very own 'factory'.We bought 10kg of incense powder from the nunnery. The nuns were so welcoming & also helpful to pack the incense powder for us. All these happenings despite their lunch break. Felt so blessed for that wonderful moment. The money from the sale is used for the running of the nunnery. It was a beautiful monastry with holy statues. Will strongly recommend to anyone seeking the Tibetan Buddhist way. Om Mani Padme Hum.

Great place for Buddhism study & retreat! Visit Kopan library for in-depth knowledge & understanding. Do visit early to avoid disappointment. Kopan store has an amazing variety of stuffs from tibetan table brocade, door brocade, singing bowls, Buddhism books, mala etc. All are carefully chosen & prepared by the Geshes (Monks) hence these are of the best quality.

Situated at the top of a hill. Slightly bad roads as you climb on top . Our car driver not able to reach the entrance and has to enquire from locals and finally reached the monastery. The timings are up to 5 pm however visitors are allowed only up to 4 pm. We reached around 0350 pm and were lucky to be allowed inside by the security guard with condition that we will return in 15 min. What a lovely place !!! As you get inside the prayer room one can experience the power of silence as the place inside is peaceful and silent. It’s advisable to sit inside closing your eyes for atleast 10 min to experience the power of meditation which is induced by the silent atmosphere prevailing there. From outside you can have a nice panoramic view of the city of Kathmandu which is lovely site. They have a small cafeteria there and washrooms are also available A must place to visit for all tourists
