Very well taken care of. Originally was known as Plaza de la Victoria. Now, for some 70 years, this square has become the meeting point for every civil celebration. On the inaugural day of the new president, Dr Alberto Fernández, the railings that separated the square from the gobernment building, Casa Rosada, located on Balcarce 50, were taken away. This has allowed thousands and thousands of people to come and celebrate this historical day.

Definitely worth the visit. Security seemed to be on edge with the large crowd, however they remained friendly and helpful.

The Plaza de Mayo (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈplasa ðe ˈmaʝo]; English: May Square) is a city square and main foundational site of Buenos Aires, Argentina. It was formed in 1884 after the demolition of the Recova building, unifying the city's Plaza Mayor and Plaza de Armas, by that time known as Plaza de la Victoria and Plaza 25 de Mayo, respectively. The city centre of Buenos Aires, Plaza de Mayo has been the scene of the most momentous events in Argentine history, as well as the largest popular demonstrations in the country. On the occasion of the one-year anniversary of the May Revolution in 1811, the Pirámide de Mayo (English: May Pyramid) was inaugurated in the square's hub, becoming Buenos Aires' first national monument.

Amazing architecture, wide open space and historically and culturally rich. Stroll around to see workers, commuters and tourists all enjoying the weather and the view. The subway (Subte) takes you right down there (the D line stops at Cathedral station which is the end of the line) so you can't miss your stop. The locals are friendly and you can sit there with a sandwich and a drink and watch a little bit of a different world go past you...

This is definitely a place that you need to see when you come to Buenos Aires!! However, be very mindful of your surroundings and situational awareness!! Because of the high number of tourists, you will find pick pocketed in abundance! They'll often work in groups and photograph the people who stop there as part of a tour and come back later to spend more time.

The 'corazon' or heart of Argentinian Demicracy and Independance. A very special place with the Presidential Palace, Buenos Aires Cathedral and the Argentinian Central bank all overlooking this space.

Beautiful and historical location to visit and learn more about the history of this location. Seeing people repaint make it seems peoples never forget. A great place to go in the morning or evening! Take a good Cortado near the location. Beautiful place and great location!

Beautiful square in the middle of the city with tons of history and significant buildings surrounding. It’s beautiful and clean. Mind your surroundings and the pickpockets (everywhere in BA, actually), but it’s a very nice and peaceful area to spend a good amount of time. There are many local markets and events on the surrounding streets. You’re sure to experience the full culture and feel of Buenos Aires here.

Pretty safe place during the day. Police are almost at every corner. It's not place for shady activities since government workers are all around there. The big Argentine flag gets raised every morning and at dawn it comes down.

I am from the UK and are on a 6-weeks tour of South America. Plaza de Mayo is a large square with a lots of fine historical buildings which are kept in good condition. There is a President Palace in this square too with its red bricks construction. There are good transport links to the square such as underground metro as well as buses which come straight to the square from the various parts of the city. I enjoyed my stay in/around the park.👍😎🇬🇧

Plaza de Mayo, located in the heart of Buenos Aires, Argentina, is a historic and significant public square. It has played a central role in the country's history and is surrounded by important government buildings, including the Casa Rosada, the presidential palace. This square has been the site of numerous important events and protests throughout Argentina's history, including the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo demonstrations. It's a place where political and social movements have made their voices heard, making it a symbol of democracy and activism. The square itself is beautifully landscaped, with historic monuments and sculptures. It's a must-visit for anyone interested in Argentina's history and culture, and it offers a unique opportunity to understand the country's political evolution while enjoying its vibrant urban atmosphere.

This is a lively square, you have some locals performing tango as well during the evenings, surrounded by massive artistic buildings, one of the top attractions of the city

The heart of Buenos Aires. A lovely public space with a buzz. The changing of the guard at the National Mausoleum in the adjoining Cathedral is well worth seing. Every two hours, starting at 10am in wintertime and 11am in summertime.

Very neat to see. Beautiful cathedral, and interesting to see the grave with soldiers guarding. Then walk outside for a nice park, presidential palace, and the huge flag!

  • 4/5 Caleb 4 years ago on Google
Lots of cool historic buildings, statues, monuments, etc. in the area. Not nearly as crowded as some of the other touristy spots like el obelisco, so you can probably get a nice picture. Also much quieter as it isn't in the middle of a major intersection. Only reason it isn't 5 stars is because there are people selling overpriced Argentina-themed trinkets you can find much cheaper elsewhere.

  • 5/5 Tolga E. 4 years ago on Google
A must see. This is the original square of the city with Pink House (presidential house) on the east, cathedral (where current Pope Francis was a cardinal before) and national bank to the north, tax service (the ugly building) to the south and Avenida de Mayo heading out of the square to the West. If you're there at the right time you can see guards marching around the square and entering the Pink House.

So I was meeting my friend at Museo Casa Rosada! Somehow, I found myself by this beautiful pink building. I asked, is this Casa Rosada? A lady said, yes! I said to myself why is this museum so heavily guarded? Is there gold in there? Finally, my friend found me and said, this is like the White House! I said, it’s pink. What on Earth is he talking about? Then when I saw the museum was in the back to the right. I’m like okay, odd location. When I got in museum, he explained that the Pink House is the Argentina Presidential Palace!! I said, OMG!!!!! LOL 😂 🇦🇷😊❤️

Beautiful place where history is all around you. Unfortunately people don't respect monuments and efforts to keep our national treasures in top shape. It's a shame that the statue to General Belgrano is also a place for political flyers and the flower beds are routinely destroyed by protesters.

  • 5/5 Guillermo L. 4 years ago on Google
The plaza itself is nice but IT is surrounded by at leadt 3 important buildings. La Casa Rosada (their white White House) with its museum, the Cabildo (original house of government in colonial times) with museum, and the cathedral (don't miss the tomb of San Martin (their George Washington).

The Plaza de Mayo is the oldest public square in Buenos aires, and has been the scene of many of the most important events in the city's history. The square is named after the Argentine revolution, which began on May 25, 1810. Around the square are several important buildings: the Cabildo, the Metropolitan Cathedral, where Pope Francis conducted mass for 20 years, the Casa Rosada, seat of the national government, the national revenue office (AFIP), the national bank and the intelligence secretariat. As well as being the site of the May revolution, the square was also the location for Argentina's first political rally in 1890. It has remained the focal point for public gatherings.

There is a lot of history in this plaza. It is a beautiful place to walk. Go mid day for less crowds. Many locals work in this area so traffic and uber rides get a little crazy around 4 PM. Plan to spend about 1 hour here, unless you go in the museums or a Cafe - then plan longer.

The Pink House is here, which has some political and cultural significance, but the views behind the plaza are what actually make this a great spot to visit. The square itself is a really neat mix of French and Spanish building with interesting intersections as well.

This is the central plaza location for the Argentine government and many agencies. At the Northwest corner is the Metro cathedral which is a beautiful structure and free to visit. The plaza square is surrounded by government administration buildings. With the National History Museum to the west, and the blue A Metro line endpoint farthest east. I would suggest Plaza de Mayo is a "must see" during your visit to Buenos Aires, Argentina. 😎 But keep in mind that the national history museum is closed on Monday and Tuesday. ☝🏻

Plaza de Mayo is the main square in the center of Buenos Aires, Argentina, surrounded by Casa Rosada, the headquarters building of the National Bank of Argentina, the City Hall, Catedral Metropolitana de Buenos Aires, and the Argentine Ministry of Economy; The square is named in honor of the May Revolution of 1810, which started the Spanish War of Liberation in 1816. There is a flag-raising ceremony at 7:30 in the morning, and then around 9:00 you can see the scene of the Argentine president coming to work by helicopter.

In my opinion this is a must-see in Buenos Aires. It is one the most beautiful theaters in the world and the tour is very interesting even if you are not a ballet or opera fan. This building represents the prominence of Argentina at the turn of the century. It was the 10th leading economy above Italy and many other European countries. If you want to know what happened, I would refer you to the Wikipedia article entitled the economic history of Argentina which is very enlightening. English tours are given starting at 10am. Times seem to vary but they have a functional and helpful website. We just walked up at 0950 and bought tickets. I have really enjoyed my time in Argentina. The people are just wonderful.

It is a place that is always crowded with many tourists. The large Argentine flag goes very well with sky blue, so it's great for taking pictures. On the weekend, various events are held to connect to the flea market of the nearby Santelmo Market, and although it is crowded, it is worth visiting. It is very convenient to visit because the subway is located and there are many buses.

Interesting place. There are many old beautiful buildings around the square. On holidays, the square and adjacent streets are crowded, various festivals and fairs are held.

Awesome! I went on a Sunday afternoon around 13:00hrs and it was not overly crowded. I happened to go on the best day of the summer and it was only 75F in Buenos Aires. More importantly, I also walked down Defensa for the Sunday San Telmo Market. The amount of people selling things was awesome. You can expect to find everything from crafts, mate, clothing, leather goods, jewelry, and even street food. It was very crowded, but this is a part of the Sunday market. If you decide to walk all the way down to the indoor San Telmo Market, then you must understand it will be VERY crowded. It is better to go there for food during the week, if that is what you are searching for.

It was really lively to pass through Plaza de Mayo on a bike tour and see the Pride celebration (Saturday in November) and to later walk through the area after dropping off our bikes. I imagine for many large events it would be similar with tons of live music, grilled foods, and happy people. It's great to see large open spaces being used by the community and visitors.

The main square of Argentina. The Presidential Palace is located on the square. You can also see the main flag of the country - a huge flag, very beautiful, fluttering in the wind.
