Vietnam History Museum in Ho Chi Minh city is 90 years old, built by the French, with Asian and Western architecture. This is the first museum in Saigon and the whole of South Vietnam. In 1954, when the French withdrew, the museum changed its name to the National Museum and use its current name after 1975. Vietnam History Museum in Ho Chi Minh City is located at 2 Nguyen Binh Khiem Street, District 1. This is a unique architectural museum that you should visit when traveling to Saigon.

Contrary to some reviews, this museum has a very large collection of Buddhist and ancient Hindu artworks. It has good representation of Chinese, Hindu, Khmer, and Cham influences on Vietnamese art. In fact, it's odd that it's called the "Hochiminh City History" museum, since it covers the history of all areas of ancient Vietnam, says little about Saigon, and is more an art than a history museum. It has a fantastic collection of Hindu sculptures, and a small but beautiful courtyard garden. If I'd known what was here, I would have put it first on my list of worthwhile places to visit. Highly recommended if you love SE Asian art.

This is a small museum and does not have much crowd, the entrance ticket to this museum is cheap and you will be able to take a look at artifacts of Vietnam. There are quite a few things to see here and the one that I like the most would be the statues and the weapon sections. The only problem I have with this museum is the lack of English language available for foreign tourists about the artifacts and the origins. I believe that more could be done in this aspect to bring in more foreign crowd into this museum. One last thing to note is to bring portable fan as there is no air conditioning here inside.

Make sure you look up for the opening hours before even visit this museum. We went here, not even finish reading the info and get kick out because of the close hour (at 11pm for some reason). Ticket is 25-30k per person. The museum is actually quite nice. They have plenty of rooms, summarise history of Vietnam from the very beginning to recent history. They display everything quite nice and helpful. Of course there is not enough info but I think for a long history stories, this place done quite well. They have a lot of stuffs to see as well. And they organised the room based on the history timeline quite nice. We spent hours to read most of the info in here. Overall this place is a very good place to learn about Vietnam history in general. But have to make sure looking up for the opening hours before going here.

A good place to learn about ancient history of Vietnam - quite some artefacts from India, China and Cambodia on display too. Several depictions of wars between Vietnam and their neighbours explains their resolve in achieving and maintaining independence. This museum is amazingly well maintained, clean and tidy! Entrance fee of V30K is a good deal!

There where a lot sculptures, paintings, and various battle dioramas. They're are also timelines on the wall which describe each period. I wish the description of each era was more succinct and described each era with more details (geopolitical and otherwise) instead of only talking about the ruling family of that era (which is good, I just wish there was more).

By far the best museum in HCMC! I found it not too big or small, the price is right, and the depth and variety is great. Some of it is a bit old and self-congradualtory, but most of it is well framed. Loved the chronological setup, as well as the featuring of other cultures!

The story of the Vietnamese warrior in defending the country against the foreign neighbouring countries is interesting. Pretty little garden at the entrance.

This is a wonderful place to take a leisurely stroll and immerse yourself in the rich history of the city. It's adorned with an array of sculptures, paintings, and various other works of art that offer a captivating glimpse into the past. After your visit, you can find solace in an artisan tea shop nearby, providing the perfect setting to unwind and reflect on your historical journey. Overall, it's a truly worthwhile experience.

This place is quite confusing and most of the time you don’t know what you are looking or where you are supposed to go. The descriptions are like placed away from the main artefacts that you basically have to keep looking left and right, just to know what you’re looking at. Also, the descriptions almost don’t say or explain anything most of the time. They either read “sandstone, spoon, bowl etc” and that’s all to it. More can be done to improve the visitors’ experience. It is quite disappointing frankly.

This is a review about both the museum and the lovely Tea Shop in its courtyard. The museum is a must see for anyone interested in the ancient cultures of Vietnam. As to the tea shop, it is the brainchild of a Saigon native French educated economist, Dan Tranh. As I expressed interest in Jasmin tea, he invited me to have some with him, from jasmine flowers harvested by him from his own garden. We chatted about his time in France, his numerous trips in Vietnam 🇻🇳 to the various tea growing regions, where artisanal methods are still used. His knowledge of tea making is vast and precise. His shop is lovely, and very inviting. It is encounters like this that make traveling such a rewarding experience! Highly recommended!

Entrance into the museum is d30,000 for adults. I spent a few hours here learning a lot about the Vietnamese history and culture. The museum is laid out nicely for you to do a circuit through with a few souvenir shops in the central courtyard. There is even a little puppet show if you happen to come at the right time.

An interesting place to get acquainted with the history of Vietnam. Many exhibits can still be found in ordinary Vietnamese houses. I like that the Vietnamese value their culture

Really neat overview of the Vietnam area. It provides a fairly broad look with a few little in-depth segments. A great collection of artifacts and reproductions. Well worth the 20,000 VND price of admission

A small but quite decent museum which covers Vietnam's early history. Caveman tools, bronze age, early Viet dynasties, Chinese influences, Cambodian influences, etc. Very cheap too so worth a visit.

Great museum to study about history in Vietnam in general and Saigon especially. This place is known for a mummy found in Saigon decades ago.

It is a place worth visiting ! It relates the history of Vietnam. It is a little bit warm in the museum as it is not air conditioned, only fans. We managed to watch an half hour of Water Puppet Show at the museum too! Although we could not understand what the show is about as it is in Vietnamese, nevertheless, we enjoyed their performance!

A small but charming museum that showcases a snapshot of the history of Vietnam. How it was geologically created, invaded, conquered, and gained independence. Good range of Buddhist artifacts displaying the region's history. Worth a visit - ticket price 30k

Layout was slightly confusing as it didn't seem to match the provided map, but it's easy enough to make your way through. The artifacts are absolutely stunning, and a lot of them are in great shape considering their age. There's a lot of info/descriptions for the items, including dates, so you get a good sense of when they were created and the history behind them. Also, the details in some of the pieces are just incredible, such incredibly talented people that must have spent so much time chiseling out the statues and deities. I had read online that the cost of entry was 15,000 dong, but in fact it's 30,000 dong. Highly recommend paying this museum a visit.

This place is only worth a visit if you have time to spare, otherwise I would say skip it! There’s nothing particular there to see or explain about the city, apparently is more of a place we’re people go to take pictures... saw a bride having her wedding pictures taken.

Entrance fee 30k dong. Mostly statues and pictures, just like other museum. Most statues about Hindu and Buddha. I came here around 9 am, not really many people visit at that time. Some area, strict for using a camera.

A nice place to visit if you're interested in Vietnamese history. Nicely organized and executed. Only one disappointment... Many items on display appeared to be recreations rather than originals, which may simply be due to a lack of availability of original items. Wonderful courtyard area to sit and relax.

Good enough musuem housed in a beautiful colonial building. This is not a huge musuem. Not a lot of artefacts on exhibits, and some are replicas. You can find wide range of things from the regions (not only Vietnam) and a lot of war scene models depicting Vietnamese insurgents to Chinese empires. Sadly, it's typical for a museum in these developing countries around the region...it's is not in a good shape. You can find broken lights, run-down facilities, deserted dusty corners, etc. everywhere. I went there around 9AM on weekday and it's literally empty... no visitors and some sleepy security guards... that's all! However... it's definitely worth a visit if you are in town... plus it's cheap to enter, only VND30,000. Let's help to maintain it!

Really nice museum without ac. But it goes through different ages in Vietnam. There are like 12 exhibitions. Ok Saturday and Sunday there is also a water puppet show.

  • 5/5 F. E. U. 9 months ago on Google
Informative exhibits with plenty of artifacts . The chronological flow of exhibits helps visitors who wish to delve into the complexity and richness of ancient Vietnamese history. Personally I much prefer this museum rather than the Ho Chi Minh City Museum as one could tell the exhibits and narratives here were put together by learned experts, while the other museum lacked the richness of meaningful artefacts.

Interesting collection of historic statuary, mostly religious, illustrating the successive cultures of Vietnam. Many dioramas and explanations of the battles that Vietnam has fought over time. Thankfully, the history of the horrors of the 20th century invasion by USA and others is preserved at the different war memorial museum.

So beautiful place. I spent there 2 hours and it wasn’t enough as there is so much information for those who want to know everything about history of Vietnam , and how it was affected by their neighbor countries. Price is 30,000 vnd

Very good museum for historical artifacts and records. It looks a little run down but overall it is good. Don’t forget to drop by the puppet show on water. Highly recommended for tourists

  • 3/5 Trang D. 4 years ago on Google
The QR code which advertised is an audio guide doesn't work. The staff seems not to care and doesn't help. We just walk on our own! The museum has great content, but I guess 30 mins is enough for everything! The most impressive and worth to try is the water puppet! I enjoyed it sooo much. You have to pay 50k extra to see the show though (museum ticket is 30k) The show is around 20 mins only and it starts at 9am 10am 11am 2pm 3pm 4pm

Pretty good museum, but it is tiny, so don't expect to spend too much time here.

  • 4/5 Angela Lucy S. 4 years ago on Google
Small history museum found to the left inside the gated to the zoo. It opened at 1pm in the afternoon instead of 1.30pm as advertised on Google. Small entrance fee. Really lovely walk through Vietnamese history from bronze age through ro rhe present. Lots of details about dynasties and reigns, wars and antiques. All in English. Unique exhibition showing a mummy. Section of antiques which were collected by several families and donated to the museum as a collection to show. Saw that they have a water puppet show but this was closed. On other reviews people had said this only happens when there are lots of visitors. Only negative would be that there is no aircon only fans.

  • 5/5 Paulina 1 year ago on Google
One of the best museums I have ever visited. The collections are not vast but they tell a colorful story of many nationalities that comprise the cultural quilt of Vietnam. They also had a special exhibition of Buddhas from the neighboring countries and Vietnam so you could compare the depictions. This museum is very informative. Allow yourself an hour to wonder through and read the exhibit descriptions in English.
