What an amazing experience we had visiting this monument! This experience was beyond my expectations. Due to the fact that we travel often, we tend to feel like some monuments resemble each other a lot which may make the experience less exciting. But this is a monument that you just must see. I very glad I had this experience on my itinerary. Inside the monument is just as amazing as outside. They have thought of every single thing to enhance this beautiful site! Very impressive!

Beautiful history location. Salahuddin Castle, perched on Cairo's Moqattam Hills, is a historic gem. Built by Saladin in the 12th century, it echoes tales of medieval valor. The fortress offers panoramic views of Cairo, merging history with breathtaking scenery. Explore its formidable walls, witness the strategic brilliance of its design, and step into a bygone era where echoes of the past linger in every stone. A testament to Egypt's rich heritage, Salahuddin Castle stands as a timeless symbol of resilience and architectural splendor, inviting visitors to unravel the mysteries woven into its ancient stones.

Loved this place which takes considerable time to explore. This is also known as the Cairo Citadel and goes back to medieval times when it was an Islamic fortification located strategically on Mokattam Hill. They say is was built by Salah ad-Din, commonly known as Saladin, starting in 1176 but I always say that he may have ruled at the time but it was built through the brilliance of architects, engineers and a lot of poorly paid labor. It served as both a military fortress and a royal residence for the rulers of Egypt for nearly 700 years. Among many attractions it offers panoramic views of the Cairo.

Salahuddin al Ayyubi participated in the struggle to save Egypt from the threat of Crusader invasion. He brought Egypt into the unity of the Islamic world. Before the conquest of Jerusalem in 1187, he destroyed the integrated army of the Crusaders in the Battle of Hattin. He saved Jerusalem and an important part of the Eastern Mediterranean from the Crusader occupation. Although he is known in history with this symbolic victory, his greater victory was achieved against the Crusaders 3rd invasion, in which the German, French, Sicilian, Italian Crusaders and all the settled Crusaders participated.  He won against the Crusade. With this victory, he was recorded as one of the greatest leaders in history.  It dealt a great blow to the determination of European kings to come to the East.  At the same time, he initiated a major development move in Egypt and Syria.  He brought about a great scientific awakening in the Islamic world with the military structure he developed and the madrasas he founded.  He became the symbol of the great liberation and development movement in the Islamic world, which started with Nûreddin and ended with the Ottoman Empire. The Mamluks who grew up in his footsteps saved the Islamic world from the Mongol invasion. Under the guidance of the ulama educated in the madrasahs opened during the reign of Nur al-Din and Selahaddin, the Ottoman Empire kept the Islamic world at the forefront as the world's greatest power for centuries. His activities shook Catholic Europe and marked a turning point in the formation of modern Europe.  Likewise, with his and Nûreddin's activities, Ismailia came to the point of being erased from history, while Imamiye came to the fore, thus laying the groundwork for the Safavid State.  For this reason, Selâhaddîn-i Ayyubî is undoubtedly among the greatest names that changed world history.

Amazing mosque which breathes history. Made with marble and alabaster from ground to walls in the patio and inside, it is a must see if you are visiting Egypt. We purchased the tour with a guide to explain with more details but you can get an Uber and buy the ticket at the entrance. It has a beautiful view from Cairo as it is located up in the hill. If you are lucky and weather is clean, it is possible to see the great pyramids in the horizon.

Best time to be there is during winter (dec-mar) when the sky mostly clear blue and afternoon sunlight makes the color tone more exquisite.

A beautiful fortification built by the first sultan of Egypt, Saladin, to keep the crusaders out. Inside the walls there is the older original mosque and a newer one from 1820. Both are beautiful to visit. It is expected that you take off your shoes and wear long sleeved shirts to enter the mosques, of course. There is also a museum of the old jail, police force, and army. The entrance fee for everything there is 200 Egyptian pounds. I think you could still enjoy this by yourself, but it might be better to have a guide who can explain everything to you. The Coptic church is not far outside the compound, walking distance.

Very nice place. It’s like a small city with different things to see and do plus with an amazing view over cairo and you can even see the pyramids from there. I liked the mosque and different structures, the architecture is amazing there. Definitely should visit.

Breathtaking architecture combined with centuries of history and a spectacular view of Cairo (indeed on a good day even the Giza pyramids are visible - see picture attached). Tourist satisfaction is guaranteed :) There are no official tourist guides (which I found a bit suprising) but there are plenty of people who offer informal services (for 200 EGP - negotiated down from 300 EGP - we got a tour of all attractions). Make sure that the person's English is good enough though. The entrance ticket for this gem of a monument is worth every penny!

The place is unbelievable. First of all, the castle is extremely clean and well worse toward so it’s definitely worth seeing. Second of all, the museum that’s in the castle is amazing and deserves 3 to 4 hours. also, as an Arab, I did not pay much the ticket costs me just like any other Egyptian

One of the best places you can visit in Cairo is the Citadel and Mohammed Ali Mosqu. It's in the heart of Old Cairo, and it's surrounded by many mosques, and it's 10 minutes from Coptic Cairo. Bring a hat and sun block because it's very hot during summer and fall, no cameras are allowed only phone with no flash. Totally recommended as there is a lot of history there.

One of my favorites in Cairo. A quick reminder, they only accept Visa payment for tickets. It was crowded compared to my previous visits because it's vacation season. We still had fun there taking many pictures and visiting mosques and museum.

Beautiful. Words can't quite capture the dignified magnificence of the Mosque. One of the better sites in Cairo. The Panoramic view from the top is simply breathtaking. A must view of ever you are on a trip to Cairo. The pricing at the entrance is fair. EGP180 for foreigners and 30 for Egyptians. A must see in Cairo

Definitely one of the top places to go in Cairo. It offers great view of the city from upstairs. Inside you can visit the Military Museum of Egypt and the Museum of Police. Moreover, there are two outstandingly beautiful mosques.

It is really a beautiful and historic place, majestic city walls, elegantly carved, we spent half a day in this place (we should be able to spend a day if time permits) In addition to the Ali Mosque, the Saladin big castle also has a police museum, a military museum, Suleiman. Pasha Mosque...etc

The citadel is an interesting place to visit for sure. If you come to Cairo you should definitely come have a look. The price, maintenance and organization of the place are a bit disappointing though. The ticket is 180 EGP for foreigners. There are supposed to be 4 museums inside but, when we visited in November 2020, 3 of them were closed (just the police museum was open). On top of that the level of maintenance of the place is really poor. There's trash everywhere and a lot of old buildings that are falling apart. They should really clean the place and fix the buildings, including the wooden structures in the main garden in front of the mosque that are falling to the floor. The thing that most disturbed me was that I tried to go to the toilet and I got asked for money to enter. Isn't 180 EGP enough to use the toilet??? It's just unbelievable. The mosque of Mohamed Ali is beautiful but needs some cleaning too. The alabaster is brown rather than white...

A beautiful place, and probably the best views of the city. The silver domes are beautiful and the inside is impressive. We loved our time there as part of our tour of Cairo.

Huge complex. Our guide dropped us off and told us he’d be back in an hour. An hour was NOT enough time to see everything this place has to offer. I couldn’t really see too many signs in English so I was easily sucked into the military museum. Great history and a really cool building, if that’s your thing. The mosque is open to non-Muslims, so we checked it out. The layout of the castle may be easily understood for someone who speaks Arabic, but I was without a clue. If we had had more time, I’m sure we could have figured it out. Student ID is a real thing here and a significant money saver. But be sure to have a student ID, they will check!

A lovely experience and worth the visit. Modeled after the Blue Mosque, the domes are worth pondering for an age for their majesty and beautiful. Walk outside for an overlook of Cairo that should also not be missed.

But he did not complete it in his life. But it was completed by Sultan Al-Kamil bin Al-Adel. The first person to reside in it was the full king, and he took it as a residence for the king. And it lasted so until the era of Muhammad Ali Pasha. It is a huge place so be ready to walk and take some water if you are planning on taking the kids because once you enter it is about 5k before there is a snack shop.

In short, yes. You should visit it. Salah Al Din Citadel is one of the most slept on tourist spots in Cairo. It’s full of history, has great stories, and is a great way to spend an hour or two. Aside from the history of the citadel, the beautiful Muhammad Ali pasha mosque is the highlight. Note: The citadel is located on a hill, so if you’re unfit or have any difficulties walking, you may have trouble reaching and moving up some uneven stairways. 5/5 stars For more food and reviews, follow me on Instagram @yamisohungry (food!) and @yamisosleepy (life!)

If you are going to Cairo, Egypt, you must visit here, but take care of the time so that you arrive at that time so that you can see everything until four o'clock. From here you can see a large part of Cairo and you can also glimpse the pyramids. The Muhammad Ali Mosque is also on the same side, which has an Ottoman style architecture.

Very beautiful and historical place, situated on high hill overlooking the whole city of Cairo, the place is a historical complex containing the remains of Salahuddin Ayyubi castle, the national military and police museums, historical mosque of Nasser Mohammad Kawloun and most notably the mosque of Mohammad Ali Pasha, the ticket is super cheap, it’s only 2.5$(1.3$ if you’re student in Egypt) for all of the activities above and it’s so worth it, probably the nicest spot you can go to in the whole of Cairo, and Rifai mosque is within walking distance, i highly recommend it.

Cairo’s magnificent citadel, there’s nothing quite like it! On top of the Mokattam, it houses historical mosques, museums, palaces and even a small prison. Different buildings around the place are from different eras, the walls date back a millennium! The Muhammad Ali Mosque is simply breathtaking, and the panoramic view of all of Cairo is phenomenal. If you look to the northeast, you will find Remeila (or Salah ElDeen) Square, around which you will see the Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hassan, the Rifa’i Mosque, and a few other places. This scene is one of the most recognizable images of Cairo, an absolute must-see! I should note, last time I visited there were no cafeterias up there so bring your water bottles and maybe some snacks.

Paid it a visit on Friday the 8th of Dec 2023. Fee was 430 LE. It was quite busy given it was a Friday afternoon, but you could walk around easily and visit all the places without waiting. The big mosque has two entrances, one for women and one for men. The funny thing is that the entrances are directly opposite to each other and inside you mingle because there are no separate spaces. There were a few vendors on the site but were not pushy and went away when I told them I didn’t want to buy anything. Since there were many families and only very few westerners, I was approached and asked for selfies many, many times. It felt like being a superstar. There’s a plateau from where you have some great views over Cairo and next to it is the small police museum. Didn’t go into the larger military museum because I thought it would be boring like the police one. Make sure you visit the prison. It’s a bit hidden on the side. Apparently you can get married on the site. There were preparations and I saw the groom and bride and her maids walking around.

To begin with the fact that I'm lucky to be an Egyptian lady, I'm really fond of Egyptian ancient history and everything about my country. Sightseeing historic places warm my heart and make me feel really elated and excited. The place there is amazing, you can see the whole Cairo city from up there, I even saw the pyramids from up there which are in Giza ! and it's not even that high as a building. Undoubtedly, the structure of the building was planned by a clever engineer. The citadelle is in the same place as the Masjid AKA "mosque" of Muhammad Ali and the military museum ,which gives you an opportunity to visit the three of them. It was an awesome experience and I actually went there more than once because everything about the place is remarkable. You will need at least 4 hours to roam the whole 3 places ,enjoy sightseeing and take pictures of yourself and certain sights because the camera is not permitted in all areas.

The Citadel of Cairo or Citadel of Saladin (Arabic: قلعة صلاح الدين‎ Qalaʿat Salāḥ ad-Dīn) is a medieval Islamic-era fortification in Cairo, Egypt, built by Salah ad-Din (Saladin) and further developed by subsequent Egyptian rulers. It was the seat of government in Egypt and the residence of its rulers for nearly 700 years from the 13th to the 19th centuries. Its location on a promontory of the Mokattam hills near the center of Cairo commands a strategic position overlooking the city and dominating its skyline. At the time of its construction, it was among the most impressive and ambitious military fortification projects of its time.It is now a preserved historic site, including mosques and museums.

One of the most beautiful places you'll visit on a trip to Cairo, Egypt. It has Amazing architecture and its pretty well looked after for the most part. Its quite a large place so be prepared to walk around a fair bit and bring with you some snacks and water as there isn't too many options inside. Take plenty of photos and don't be shy to ask for a guide and bombard them with questions. I visited this place 3 times in my visits to Cairo.

Egypt is not only about pyramids. The Citadel is a fortress built by Saladin, one of the most important people in islamic history (and in world history, you may know him from the movie Kingdom of Heaven). A guide will tell you many stories about Saladin, his fortress and Islam (you may find out things you didn't imagine). There is a beautiful panorama of Cairo from the fortress - we were told on some days you could see the pyramids from there but we weren't that lucky.

This is a historical place that you must visit in Cairo.such a great mosq and citadel wz lots of nice colors and old patterns. The working hours from 9-5 , I recommend that you got a comfortable shoes and bring yr water wz you. You MUST MUST make sure to go to WC before this visit as no clean place or WC there. Wear your hat and sunglasses and enjoy. What I also discovered that in night there is a lot of parties might happen thier and even private events like weddings however wz special authority approvals.

As I have a love for the history of this region I had to go and see the Citadel that Saladin had built this imposing structure looming over old Cairo. It has been improved and added to as control of Cairo Egypt has changed hands over the Centuries. I was particularly interested to see the site where the Mamluk massacre took place but unfortunately that are is closed. The Egypt military museum is closed you can walk around the out side which has a collection of old Amoured vehicles, Planes, SAM batterys & Radar. Tucked away in the corner is a Diorama of the Egyptian Engineers using water cannons to break down the Sand wall along the Suez cannal. We'll played. I must admit it is run down and many areas a closed it is still worth going and having a look at. Even if it's only for the view of Cairo.

The Citadel of Saladin is basically a huge castle located in what is now central Cairo on a hill that overlooks the city. Within the walls of the citadel you'll find four large mosques, five useums a theater and a park. All very impressive. You can spend the whole day just touring the Citadel itself. I would recommend not skipping it, but at the same time pick the places that you really wanna visit.

Such a beautiful mosque! One of my favorite areas in Old Cairo and around the citadel. They do not do daily prayers here, however there is a small area where you can perform your salat if needed. I had the pleasure of visiting Saladin Citadel in Cairo and it was truly a memorable experience. The Citadel is a magnificent fortress that offers breathtaking views of the city and is steeped in history. The Saladin Citadel was built by the Muslim ruler Saladin to defend the Sultanate of Egypt and Syria. As soon as I entered the Citadel, I was transported back in time. The architecture and design of the fortress are simply awe-inspiring, and the attention to detail is impressive. One of the highlights of my visit was the Mohammed Ali mosque and the stunning view of Cairo from the Citadel that provides a panoramic view. Overall, my experience at Saladin Citadel was unforgettable. The Citadel is a must-visit destination in Cairo, offering visitors a glimpse into the rich history and culture of Egypt. The beautiful architecture, stunning views, and informative exhibitions make it a truly exceptional attraction.

One of the best places I have been to, it oversees the whole country. It is a great place to spend the day till sunset and it is like a complex with series of mosques and museums to vist so it's better to be there early.

Very cool and interesting islamic architecture by Saladin. During the height of the crusades. You can see how fortified and how grand the structure is with marble.

Very cool place to visit in Cairo, the military museum is absolutely stunning, big collection and the palace itself it also terrific. The mosque is beautiful and in general the whole citadel is worth the price to enter. Make sure to reserve 2-3 hours to visit properly. You can buy tickets at the entrance - adults (foreigners) is 200 egp. Try to avoid going on Fridays (many kids/school trips asking for pictures)

Amazing place with beautiful view of the city from the citadel grounds. Muhammad Ali Mosque looks amazing both from outside and the inside. I liked Qalawun mosque better which is right next to Muhammad Ali mosque. It is can easy to tell the difference in the two eras by just looking at the architecture of the two buildings (mosques)

A huge citadel, and other than the citadel itself are several other places to visit such as the museum of national defense where many heavy artillery are on display. One can buy tickets on-site, and there is a good amount of walking inside here. Do not expect restrooms everywhere inside here, not to mention the cleanliness of them. You can also get a panoramic view of Cairo at one of the corners of this place.
