The Ben Ezra Synagogue in Cairo is located behind the Hanging Church and was once a church itself. Ben Ezra is quite easily accessible from anywhere in Cairo, with the Metro being the most convenient Mar Girgis Station. The Ben Ezra Synagogue was originally a Christian church, which the Coptic Christians of Cairo had to sell to the Jews in 882 A.D in order to pay the annual taxes imposed by the Muslim rulers of the time. The church was purchased by Abraham Ben Ezra, who came from Jerusalem during the reign of Ahmed Ibn Tulun, for 20,000 dinars. The synagogue was a place of pilgrimage for North African Jews and the site of major festival celebrations. The famous medieval rabbi Moses Maimonides worshipped at Ben Ezra synagogue when he lived in Cairo. Numerous restorations and renovations were made over the centuries, and the present building dates from 1892. It is a faithful reconstruction of the original, which had collapsed. During the reconstruction, a medieval Geniza (a hiding place for sacred books and worn-out Torah scrolls) was discovered, revealing thousands of original documents from the Middle Ages. The Synagogue of Ben Ezra has a basilica-style plan and two floors, the lower one for men and the upper one for women. The main floor is divided into three parts by steel bars, and in the center is an octagonal marble bima (platform for Torah reading). The synagogue is decorated with geometric and floral patterns in the Turkish style. Tradition marks this as the spot where the prophet Jeremiah gathered the Jews in the 6th century after Nebuchadnezzar destroyed the Jerusalem temple. The adjacent spring behind the building (not accessible now but can be seen from the outside through the grill) is supposed to mark the place where the pharaoh’s daughter found Moses in the reeds, and also where Mary drew water to wash Jesus. Today Ben Ezra Synagogue is a historical monument and the most-visited Jewish site in Cairo. Be prepared to pass through security in order to enter the synagogue.

The Ben Ezra Synagogue is the most beautiful and oldest Synagogue in Cairo / Egypt . There is so much beautiful history about this place back to Mosses and Rambam time . Another important thing about the BenEzra that the Cairo Genizah was discovered there in the 2nd floor, sadly it's all taken to the UK . Over all its an amazing place worth visiting .

Ben Ezra Synagogue is a synagogue that more of a tourist attraction in Coptic Cairo more than a place of worship due to the few Jews still in Egypt. The building doesn’t look like much, but the inside has been attractively restored and certainly looks pretty. Pity no photos are allowed though.

So good to have this in the Coptic Christian area. It was great to see. Pushy for donations. Roped off sections ruin the experience a bit. However, a good place to pray. No pictures or video allowed.

Interesting site with a lot of history attached to it. Only 1 room though and we are not permitted to take photos! On the day I went (erev Pesach and shabbat) it was full of tours and guides and extremely noisy and crowded. Perhaps this was unusual. It is next to some extremely old churches and a huge curio shop is close by too. All in all an interesting if somewhat crowded visit. Where else can you see the place where baby Moses was found?

This was the synagogue whose geniza or store room was found in the 19th century to contain a treasure of abandoned Hebrew, Aramaic and Judeo-Arabic secular and sacred manuscripts. The collection, known as the Cairo Geniza, was brought to the University of Cambridge in Cambridge, England at the instigation of Solomon Schechter. It is now divided between several academic libraries, with the majority being kept at the Cambridge University Library.

Disappointed. The place have been shut for 10 months now and somehow marked as open on the Google site. How difficult is it to change it ? But the rest of the Coptic area is fantastic.

(Translated by Google) Interesting place that is easily accessible (you arrive by subway). Location where the Farahon's daughter found Moises. It is a place where no entrance fee is paid, so pay attention to that, listen to the receptionists to tell a group of tourists that they should pay to visit it. (Translated by Google) Very interesting, it is not the most impressive in the city, but it is worth passing. At peak moments of prayer, tourists are not allowed out of respect. Remember to remove your shoes and avoid alms, it's exaggerated. Look closely at the exterior floors and interior ceilings. Recuerda descalzarte y evita las limosnas, es exagerado. Fíjate bien en los suelos exteriores y en los techos interiores.

The waterfront where Moses was extracted attracted early Christians to build a church. Phenomenal data detected, a sacred site selected. In the ninth century, Abraham Ben-Ezra, the rabbi of Jerusalem purchased the church, hence the name, the Ben Ezra Synagogue. The synagogue tells a tale of two arks. Inside the oldest synagogue in Egypt, there is a symbolic Ark of the Covenant where the stone tablets inscribed with the Ten Commandments would have been placed. The community that lived in harmony with the commandments received the divine grace. Listen to the third commandment of the Ten Commandments: You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain. This is the story of how the word of God made a medieval archive survive the ravages of time and man. In the late 19th century, scholars made a stunning discovery as they stumbled upon a Geniza, a storage room, in the attic of the synagogue. This treasure trove sheds a flood of light on the lost and found world of Cairo in the middle ages.

(Translated by Google) Egyptian Hebrew temple monument filled with quietude It is said that the prophet Moses was found at this place by Nfr Try daughter of Pharaoh Seti I, at the time the level of the Nile was higher about 3200 years ago. Surmount that this place erected in old Cairo where are the churches at the moment is the first mosque Egypt and the witness of an old religious history. Do not forget that Saint Joseph, the Virgin Mary, El MESSIAH during their flight to Egypt in year 0 and year 2. It must be known that Jesus spent part of his childhood with the Egyptians. The synagogue is a work of art as a whole. Respect at all times by the Egyptian people as a place of prayer. It is for this reason that it was well preserved by the grace of God, is not the demonstration of the spiritual tolerance given to the Egyptian people who despite the vagaries of time and follies of men knew how to respect the coronation and the faith men. Hoping that in Israel there is this same grandeur of soul. Congratulations again to the Egyptian people for this hope that you know how to share with the world and which is reflected in your actions always leaning towards good and not by the force of the Bombs. Good is indestructible, it travels in the hearts of men. Bravo of this fantastic victory has the reality of the world.
