Cool place to check out. Only gave it a 4-star rating because there isn't a whole lot to see here and you have to pay to get in, then they have a guide who will ask you for more money if you take more pictures. We had a guide so he told them to leave us alone (haha). Interesting place though and if you like the Nile it's a must see.

The ticket for Nilometer & Manasterly Palace is Le20 for foreign student. The Nilometer is to measure the depth of Nile River. We will know if there is any flood but it isn't function anymore. It looks like Batman movie: Dark Knight Rises.

This part of Roda island is a nice peaceful and quiet place to relax and pack a lunch. But the Nilometer itself is very much worth the visit. Amazing piece of history and engineering. The staff are so professional and helpful. Highly recommended and not to be missed when in Cairo.

The palace is closed and the museum is an additional fee so you are visiting only the nilometer for 40ep. But it was a unique place to see after all the museums and palaces. You can leave you bag with the reception for a small fee.

The portions of the Nile that run through Egypt would burst their banks and flood the neighbouring flood plain between July and November. When the floodwaters receded in September or October, they left a rich alluvial deposit of extremely fertile black silt over the croplands. The akhet, or Inundation Season, was one of the three seasons that the ancient Egyptians divided their year into. For Egyptian civilization, the annual flood was extremely important. A moderate inundation was necessary for the agricultural cycle to work; however, a lighter inundation than usual would result in starvation, and too much flood water would be as disastrous, destroying much of the infrastructure built on the flood plain. According to records from AD 622 to 999, 28 percent of the years saw an inundation that fell short of forecasts. The Ancient Egyptian priesthood's mystique included the ability to foretell the volume of the impending flood. The quality of the year's flood was used to decide the levels of tax to be paid, therefore the same talent was utilised in politics and administration. The nilometer was invented for this purpose.

(Translated by Google) Quick information about the Nilometer 10 information about the Nile River Scale in Cairo Governorate Since ancient times, Egyptians knew the construction of scales throughout the country, in order to get to know the height of the Nile due to its close relationship with the irrigation of lands and the collection of excretions, i.e. taxes or state funds in the next agricultural year. In the Abbasid era. The current scale on Rawda Island is the second of the Islamic monuments in advance after the remains that do not remain in the Mosque of Amr ibn al-Aas, it is also attributed to the Abbasid era, and the whole scale remained in good condition thanks to the maintenance and repair work carried out by the government 1- The scale is an antique, which is a stepped marble column with an octagonal sector topped by a Roman capital 19 cubits long, with measurement marks engraved on it. 2- Stages of work: Accurate organization and timing have been set for them, as well as from the start of digging the well and the tunnels connected to it, until the completion of the work on building the well, its walls and tunnels and the column that was placed completely in the axis of the well. 3- The hole that was established to build the well was square, its side not less than ten meters, and its height not less than 12 meters, so the matter required digging at least 1200 cubic meters of soil and mud, and to that depth. 4- In the middle of the column is a square well constructed with refined stones that was taken into account in its construction to increase its thickness as the depth increased, and on this the well was constructed from three layers "the lower in the form of a circle, topped by a square layer whose side is greater than the diameter of the circle, and the upper and last square has a side greater than the middle square." . 5- The thickness of the walls and its gradation in this way, indicates that the Muslims were aware of the engineering theory of the increase in the horizontal pressure of the soil as the depth increased to the bottom. 6- The central pillar rests on a base of sycamore wood because it is the only one that is not affected by water to fix it from below, and is fixed from the top by any tie beam, and it has an inscription in kufic for a Quranic verse. 7- The scale is connected to the Nile by three tunnels that pour their water into the well through three openings on the eastern side, so that the water remains static in the well, as the movement of water in the Nile is from south to north and therefore there is no direction of movement of water in the eastern and western sides. 8- A staircase is running around the walls of the well from the inside, reaching the bottom. 9- The openings are topped by pointed arches resting on columns built into the walls, with capitals and bell bases. 10- The archaeological inscriptions and writings on the scale, on the north and east side are archaeological inscriptions in kufic script, and on the south and west sides are inscriptions dating back to the days of Ahmad ibn Tulun in the year 259 AH. I found this place by chance while I was just wondering around with no place to go, I found it while I was scrolling around my location, this museum is in a very strategic and a beautiful spot, at the corner of Manyal island with a stunning view, yet, its not easily accessible. The place it self is beautiful, its like a scene from harry potter movie, and its usage is very rare, you can hardly find an ancient place to measure the level of a water surface in the world, especially when it has islamic writings on the wall. Beautiful!, must see !

(Translated by Google) He was one of seven others, to keep the "Rawda Scale" a witness to the interest of the Egyptians since ancient times in the Nile River, as it is considered one of the oldest Islamic monuments after the Mosque of Amr Ibn Al-Aas. Al-Farghani, whose statue tops its entrance. The Nilometer ... that effect that has attracted the interest of the Egyptians for 1,100 years, and although it was determining the fate of all Egyptians throughout these centuries by determining the agricultural area and the taxes imposed, it is now suffering from neglect and neglect, especially after the work on it stopped since the construction of the High Dam , And it turned into a tourist attraction visited by foreign tourists only "2 pounds only" ... is the price of the entry ticket for any Egyptian visitor to the Nilometer, 2 pounds or up to 6 pounds that a foreign tourist pays is not sufficient at all to be a budget for the maintenance and attention to that oldest impact in the Egyptian Islamic history, and after we obtained the entry ticket We ran into the first Islamic monument, a granite statue, the Uzbek mathematician Ahmed Al-Farghani, the builder of the Nilometer. "Inner scene of scale" A square hall with sides length of 8 meters, in the center of which is a square well constructed with stones 6 meters long and 12 meters deep. A drought occurs in cubits that destroys the crop and reduces production, so the tax is forbidden in this year, and if it exceeds 16 cubits, a flood occurs that destroys the crop, so tax is forbidden. The well is composed of three different levels and needs 37 steps of ladder to go down to the bottom, and each level has a special opening that connects the well with the Nile water, meaning that the well has 3 holes above each other, and in the first level there are four pointed arches that resemble windows, and it is one of the oldest arches that were built. In Egypt, which are wall loads whose function is to absorb the shock of the water rushing to the scale, as we noticed some inscriptions on the longitudinal stone of this square written on it Verse No. 32 of Surat Ibrahim, in which the Almighty said: “God created the heavens and the earth and descended from the sky. With it from the fruits you have sustenance And the ark has been leveraged for you to run on the sea at His command And the rivers mocked you. And in the second level, which began to narrow in space, and there is the second hole in it, which is almost the same as the first in terms of breadth, but there are no arches around it, then after it the third circular and smaller level needs 8 small steps to go down to it and there is the base made of sycamore trees. The base was different as an architectural structure from the rest of the scale, as it takes a circular shape, and it was created in this way because the engineering designer discovered that when the river’s water entered the scale, it was forcefully pushed that might lead to the breakage of the column or affect the walls, and the circular shape was best suited to absorb these Power. At the bottom, I looked at the top of the well, and I saw the conical dome, decorated with bright drawings and colors, designed in the Ottoman style. And on the walls of the scale outside the well there are four panels hung on the wall, written on them the same verse as on the stones and the same line Kuf (Original)

The Nilometer in Rawda is considered one of the Abbasid installations.
