This great mosque was established by Sultan Al-Malik Al-Muayyad Abu Al-Nasr Saif Al-Din Sheikh Al-Mahmoudi Al-Jaraksi Bin Abdullah Al-Mahmoudi Al-Dhaheri, the fourth of the Circassian Sultans, during the period between the years "818-824" Hijri and "1415-1421" AD. For the people of knowledge and his reverence for the judges, and he was inclined to leave and present them, and his actions were in many aspects of righteousness, and he was fond of architecture, so he established a lighthouse in Al-Azhar, and renewed the Al-Muqiyas Mosque, as well as establishing several mosques, sabils, offices and other buildings in Egypt and the Levant. The site of the mosque before its construction was a heinous prison for crime lords, called the "prison" of Shamail, in addition to two Qaysariyyas, one of which is by Sanqur al-Ashqar, and the other by Baha al-Din Arslan, and al-Muayad was imprisoned in this treasury days when Prince Mantash defeated and arrested the apparent Mamluks So the supporter suffered in it from the horrors that made him warn that he could get out of this prison, and the king authorized him to demolish it and build in its place a mosque for God and a school for the people of knowledge. On the fifth of Rabi` al-Awal, 818 AH, 1415 AD, the construction of the mosque began, and it was completed after five years, that is, the year 823 AH, 1421 AD. Egypt suffered a major economic calamity during the construction of the Al-Moayad Sheikh Mosque, which affected the construction movement, so the dome and Sufi houses were not constructed, and historical sources indicate that when Sultan Al-Muayyad died on the ninth of Muharram 824 AH 1421 AD, he was carried from the castle to his mosque, and was buried in The eastern dome was before the era, and the dome had not been constructed yet, so its architecture began until it was completed in the month of Dhu al-Hijjah of the same year. “The Whole Mosque of Mahasin Al-Bunyan is a witness to the splendor of its pillars and the enormity of its structure, and that its originator is the master of the kings of time. 1517 AD, he said that this is the building of Kings, However, the sit-in of some tyrants and outlaws in the mosque in 1665 AD, that is, during the rule of the Ottoman governor Umar Pasha, and his compulsion to attack them and force them to surrender, had the greatest impact on the damage and demolition of the mosque, until Ahmad Pasha, the governor, realized it in 1690 and repaired it, and he In the year 1874 AD, the walls of the mosque were demolished, with the exception of the qibla wall, by order of Khedive Ismail, and they were rebuilt completely in their original form. The southeast façade is the main façade of the mosque, and it overlooks Al-Muizz Li Din Allah Al-Qibli Street, and it includes the entrance block at the eastern end, followed by the dome's façade on the south side and the dome above it, then the façade of the qibla canopy. The first overlooks the eastern dome, then the four entrances that overlook the southeast canopy, and these incomes are occupied from the bottom by a row of window openings overlaid with metal grilles, topped by simple lanterns, and above the entrance to the qibla mihrab is a round lunar canopy. A row of folios in the form of a vegetable leaf. The dome is decorated on the outside with delicate "zigzag" figures, which is one of the verses of artistic creativity. The entrance is located at the eastern end of the main façade, and it consists of a deep entrance “entrance stone”, on either side of which are two “mastaba” sits crowned with a medallion arch, and the archways are filled with floral motifs, and in the middle of the entrance is the entrance door opening and crowned with a straight lintel decorated with leafy “arabesque” floral motifs With the opening of the door, a decorative "wrap" strip that includes colorful intertwining geometric motifs. A wooden door of two doors clad in bronze closes on the door opening, which was transported by Sultan Al-Moayad from the school of Sultan Hassan. The entrance door opening leads to a square arcade with a marble floor covered by a fan vault in the middle of which is a crossed shape dotted with famous stone. On both sides of the gazebo are two doors knotted with civil arches, the right leading to a corridor with a marble floor and at its end a door opening leading to the courtyard of the mosque, and the left leading to the dome and from there to Southeast canopy. The courtyard of the mosque occupies a square area, in the center of which is an octagonal marble fountain, surmounted by a wooden dome with a flap mounted on eight (Original) "المؤيد شيخ".. Sultan Al-Moayad Sheikh Mosque or Al-Moayad Mosque or Al-Muayyad Mosque is one of the famous archaeological mosques in Cairo, and is described as the pride of the mosques of the Circassian Mamluk era. Its construction began in 818 AH / 1415 AD by order of Sultan Al-Moayad Abu Al-Nasr Saif Al-Din Sheikh bin Abdullah Al-Mahmudi Al-Dhahiri, one of the rulers of the Mamluk state during the Circassian Mamluk era. The dome of the mosque was still under construction, and it was completed in Ramadan 824 AH / 1421 AD, and until that time many of the mosque’s annexes had not begun to be built as planned, such as the tribal dome and Sufi houses in Khanaqah. In the mosque there are two mausoleums under the dome, one for Sultan Al-Mu'ayyad Sheikh, and the other for his sons Al-Sarmi Ibrahim, Al-Muzaffar Ahmad and Abu Al-Fath Musa.

Sultan al-Muayyad Shaykh was a Burgi or Circassian Mamluk who served as sultan between 1412 and 1421. Al-Maqrizi relates that during the reign of Farag ibn Barquq, al-Mu'ayyad, a great intriguer during a time of great intrigues, was captured and thrown into the prison on this site. He suffered terribly from the lice and the fleas, and vowed then that if he ever came to power he would transform the infested prison into a "saintly place for the education of scholars." Once he became sultan, he soon fulfilled his promise, spending some 40,000 dinars on its construction. "Marble was taken from everywhere", relates the 15th century historian al-Taghribirdi, "even from (private) houses and palaces ... The prize of marble in Egypt soon rose to astronomical height for the vast demand and the big dimensions of the mosque. Thus, what regards decoration and the use of marbles, this mosque became the most beautiful ever to be built in Cairo". Numerous donkeys were occupied for days carrying away loads of bones of the dead found in the prison. Due to the Sultan's lavish endowments, the madrasa became one of the most prominent academic institutions of the 15th century. A large library was collected, and the most eminent scholars of the day filled professorial chairs. the most famous specialist in Quranic exegesis in Egypt, Ibn Hagar al-'Asqalani, was installed as lecturer in Shafi'i jurisprudence. Finally, there was a great ceremony for its opening, when al-Mu'ayyad and his Mamluk entourage came down from the Citadel. According to reports, the water basin in the middle of the vast courtyard was filled with liquefied sugar and sweets were offered, along with lectures and much ceremony.

This is the first mosque on the left, after passing through Bab Zuwayla gate. As one looks north through the arched opening of Bab Zuwayla, the massive façade ending in the portal and the majestic dome of the mosque fills the vista. The elevated portal, with its red and turquoise frame around the door, carved arabesque patterns and Kufic script are particularly beautiful. The magnificent bronze door originally belonged to Sultan Hassan Mosque. The patterns of the ceiling decoration, above the men’s praying area, are of a spectacular richness, looking like suspended carpets. However, the ceiling above the women praying area has no decoration. This majestic mosque was built on the place of a notorious prison, where al-Mu’ayyad himself was once confined. He suffered terribly from the lice and fleas and vowed that if he would ever came to power he would transform the infested jail into “a holly place for the education of scholars”. Which he actually did, as he became the Mameluke Sultan al-Mu’ayyad Shaykh, ruling from 1412 to 1421. Despite of its beauty, visiting this mosque requires foreign visitors to pay some attention. There’s a guy hanging around and pretending that he’s a guide. He asks money from foreign tourists for a “mosque guided tour”. This is a hoax, as visiting the mosque is free of charge.

The Mosque of Sultan al-Mu'ayyad is a Mosque in Cairo, Egypt next to Bab Zuwayla built under the rule of sultan Al-Mu'ayyad Sayf ad-Din Shaykh and it’s often described as the pride of the Mamluk architecture during the Circassian Mamluks’ era. Construction began in 1415 and the mosque was completed in 1421. The complex included a Friday mosque and a madrasa. It replaced a prison which originally stood next to Bab Zuwayla. Its architecture is very beautiful and the interior decorations are extremely beautiful as well.

Ended up here one evening just as the last prayer of the day was called. We were invited inside and taken up to the rooftop for an enchanting view of the area from the rooftop. Talk to the guardian of the building and you may be in luck.

Visited here in March, 2018. I happened to arrive at this historical mosque while I was strolling on the street without a specific destination. This place is pretty huge and kind of sacred atmosphere was coming out of here, so I guess it made me interested in the inside of this mosque. The inside here is somehow very quiet even in this hectic metropolis. Also I don't know if it is because the time I visited was not for pray or gathering here, but just only a few guys were walking there. One of them spoke to me and even asked me for an entrance fee, but actually I couldn't recognize him as an official staff there, so I didn't pay after all. Was it correct ? If this info is wrong, excuse me. Anyway the views from the minaret top is awesome as well as of course worth visiting. Pyramids are the symbol of Egypt which everyone knows, but personally as for this mosque, it shows more real life in Cairo including its cityscape with curious architecture. I love it.

The site of the mosque was in the old days a prison known as "Khazana Shamail". It is located in Al-Sukkariyyah, in the Al-Darb Al-Ahmar area of the Central Cairo neighborhood. The mosque has four borders. Its southeastern border overlooks Al-Muizz Li Din Allah Street and has the main façade and entrance, and its northeastern border overlooks Al-Sharqiya Street, the northwestern unit contains the ablution and student residences, and the southwestern unit overlooks a street under the Quarter, currently Ahmad Maher Street, while The southern corner of the mosque is intertwined with the western tower of Bab Zuweila. (Translated by Google) The site of the mosque in the past was a prison known as the "Treasury of Shamael". Al-Moayad Sheikh was imprisoned for a period of time when he was a prince for reasons that historians disagreed about, and he suffered in it from many adversities. Wali, the king of Egypt, fulfilled his vow and began building the mosque, so he bought Caesarea Prince Sanqur al-Ashqar and several houses and lanes adjacent to the prison and demolished all of them, and on 4 Jumada al-Akhirah 818 AH / 1415 CE he began digging foundations. The Sultan assured himself that he stood this mosque for God Almighty, and several places in Egypt and the Levant supported it. In Shaaban 819 AH, the great door of the copper was transferred from the school of Sultan Hassan with the Tannour al-Nahas, and the price of them was paid 500 dinars. That stopped the school of Sultan Hassan, the village of Qaha in Qalyubia. To the month of Dhu al-Hijjah 819 AH / 1417 CE, the expenses amounted to forty thousand dinars and the mosque has not yet finished, and a large library that was in the castle was transferred to it, as well as five hundred volumes donated to him by the clerk of the clerk Nasir al-Din Muhammad al-Barzi and opened in Muharram 820 AH / 1417 CE, and on 2 Jumada al-Ula 820 AH / 1417 CE was established It contains the Friday prayer, and only the qiblah iwan is complete. On Ramadan 5 820 AH / 1417 CE, the necessary places for the construction of the ablution in the sub-quarter street were demolished, and their construction was completed in Shawwal 820 AH / 1417 CE, and the expenses until the end of Ramadan 820 AH / 1417 CE were about seventy thousand dinars. While Sultan Al-Muayyad appointed teachers for the mosque in Jumada Al-Ula 822 AH / 1419 CE to teach the four schools of thought, hadith, readings and medicine, while the architecture is still continuing in the mosque. On Shawwal 21, 822 AH / 1419 CE, he celebrated the opening of the mosque, and the construction of the domes was not yet complete at that time. The Sultan ordered Al-Mu'ayyad to prepare a great tablecloth and to fill the watery dish with sugar, and he blessed the preacher and teachers in the presence of senior statesmen and his son Al-Sarmi Ibrahim. When Al-Sarmi Ibrahim died on Jumada Al-Akhirah 22 823 AH / 1420 AD, he was buried in the Bahariya Dome while it was under construction. His father, Sultan Al-Muayyad, joined him on 8 Muharram 824 AH / 1421 AD and was also buried in the Bahari dome before it was completed. Work continued in that dome until it was completed in Ramadan 824 AH / 1421 AD, and until At that time, many of the mosque's annexes had not begun to be built as planned, such as the tribal dome and the Sufi houses in the Khanqah (Original)

In the year 824 AH / 1421 CE, Sultan Al-Muayyad died after his illness became severe and was buried next to his son in the Bahariya Dome of the mosque, after he ruled for eight years Sultan Al-Muayyad was characterized by courage and boldness, his love for the people of knowledge and his reverence for the judges, and he was inclined to leave and present them, and his actions were many in the faces of righteousness, and he was fond of architecture, so he established a lighthouse in Al-Azhar, renewed the Al-Muqyas Mosque and established Al-Khanqah Al-Kharoubia, as well as established several mosques, sablas, offices and other buildings in Egypt and the Levant, none of which remained. Except for the remains of the Sabil and Chapel in the Citadel, the Bimaristan in the Quarry, the bathhouse in the sub-quarter Street and the Muaydi Mosque, but it was also described as miserliness and some misfortunes (Original)

(Translated by Google) The Sultan Al-Muayyad Mosque or the Al-Muayyad Mosque or Al-Muayyid Mosque is one of the famous archeological mosques in Cairo, and it is described as the pride of the mosques of the Circassian Mamluks. Its construction began in the year 818 AH / 1415AD by order of Sultan Al-Muayyad Abu Al-Nasr Saif Al-Din Sheikh Bin Abdullah Al-Mahmoud Al-Dhahiri, one of the rulers of the Mamluk state during the era of the Circassian Mamluks. The dome of the mosque was still under construction, and work was completed in Ramadan 824 AH / 1421 AD, and up to that time many of the mosque's annexes had not yet begun to be built as planned, such as the tribal dome and Sufi houses of Khanqah. In the mosque there are two shrines under the dome, one for Sultan al-Muayyad Sheikh, and the other for his strict sons Ibrahim and al-Muzaffar Ahmed and Abu al-Fath Musa. The site of the mosque was previously a prison known as the "Treasury of Shamail", and it is currently located in Al-Askariah, in the Al-Darb Al-Ahmar area of the central Cairo neighborhood. The mosque has four boundaries, its southeastern border overlooks Al-Mu'izz Street for the religion of God and has the main facade and entrance, and the northeastern boundary overlooks Al-Sharqiya Street, the northwestern unit has lighting and student residences, and the southwestern unit overlooks a street below the quarter, "Ahmed Maher Street is currently", while The southern corner of the mosque is intertwined with the western tower of Bab Zuweila. Adjacent to the mosque are several other ancient mosques, such as Al-Saleh Talaea Mosque, and Zawiyat Al-Nasir Faraj bin Barquq He ordered the establishment of the mosque, Sultan al-Malik al-Muayyad Abu al-Nasr Saif al-Din Shaykh ibn Abdullah al-Mahmudi al-Dhahri Circassian origin.
