A very beautiful church very beautiful architecture, it’s a Greek Orthodox church from the 10th century that’s located within the fortress of Babylon in Coptic cairo, i would highly recommend visiting it along all the other churches next to it.

The church dates back to the 5th century, although the current building only dates back to the early 2000s after it was largely destroyed 1975. The interior of the church has a very distinctive oval design and typical Orthodox style sanctum sanctorum. Beautiful frescos adorn the walls and the ceiling. Worth visiting this church if in Coptic Cairo.

Greater appreciation for St George, the patron saint of England, who slayed the dragon which symbolises his conquests over evil. Eventually he was tortured by the Romans for not converting away from his Christian faith, and for this I have much respect to anyone who will face death to stand by their beliefs. Of Greek descent, this Church shows some of the ways he was tortured, and you can even put the same chain around your neck which was used to deny his freedom. People light candles, write notes asking for blessings, and give monies in his honour.

The Church of St. George in Coptic Cairo is the principal Greek Orthodox church of Egypt. It is built atop an old Roman tower and adjoins the Monastery of St. George. The Church of St. George was built in the 10th century, but a fire destroyed the original structure. The present church dates only from 1904. St. George is the only round church in Egypt, but unlike the original Church of the Holy Sepulchre and its many imitators (such as Rome's Santa Stefano Rotondo and London's Temple Church), this is only for practical reasons - it is built atop the foundations of a Roman round tower. Inside, the dark interior is heavy with incense and pierced by sunbeams that filter through its stained glass windows. A (closed) flight of steps leads down into the old Roman tower, once believed to be "peopled by devils." Next door, the Monastery of St. George is now the seat of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria. The monastery rarely admits tourists. Confusingly, just down the road is another Church of St. George and a Convent of St. George, the latter of which opens its chapel to visitors (daily 9-4) and has some English-speaking nuns. Both of these institutions are Coptic Orthodox. St. George's celebration of the Moulid of Mari Girgis (St. George's Day) on April 23 is one of the largest Coptic festivals in Cairo - despite the fact that the church is Greek, not Coptic.

Coming early in the morning will ensure a quite visit before the bustling crowds. The most important historic coptic church in Cairo, beautifully and richly decorated as it withstood the testament of time. Unfortunately wondering around isn't allowed only from the entrance side one can glimpse the beauty inside. And right around the corner the beautifully other coptic churches and the local cemetery and adjacent to it the amazing coptic museum. The best way to reach the place is by metro for a tiny 30 Egyptian pound for each way or hy renting a local cab.

One of the main things to see in Coptic Cairo, with a nice interior, but nothing to extraordinary compared to other Coptic churches. That statement will go against most things written in guidebooks, but I can say the truth because I'm not looking to sell books.

Amazing & Is the only round church in Egypt. It was built in the 10th century on the top of the Roman tower by the fortress of Babylon.

Beautiful church. Small not ostentatious. Beautiful icons. Very old. Well worth the visit of this church, the Hanging Garden, the synagogue and also the Coptic museum next door. An area with serious religious history, some of it questionable.

Beautiful Orthodox church, located next to Coptic Museum. For those who visited Greece, this church might be not so impressive, but considering that it stands in the middle of a Muslim city, the perspective changes. It's actually a brand new construction (21st century) built on the place of the former prison where Saint George was tortured, according to the local myths and legends. The church is actually located right in the center of an old Christian quarter, it is surrounded by three Coptic churches, a Coptic monastery and a Coptic cemetery.

Apparently this is a Greek Orthodox Church. It’s located in this religious, beautiful and historic Coptic quarter of old Cairo, and surrounded by several significant Coptic churches. It’s interior is typical Greek church deco style.

Nice to visit but unfortunately nothing much to do inside as it is forbidden to wander around inside the church itself to take picture so it was only allowed from the side and in the outside of coarse.

The Church of St. George (Greek: Εκκλησία Αγίου Γεωργίου; Arabic: كنيسة القديس جورج) is a Greek Orthodox church within the Babylon Fortress in Coptic Cairo.[1][2] It is part of the Holy Patriarchal Monastery of St George under the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and all Africa.[1] The church dates back to the 10th century (or earlier). The current structure was rebuilt following a 1904 fire,[3] construction was finished in 1909.[4] Since 2009, the monastery's hegumen has had the rank of bishop with title Bishop Babylonos
