The Bengal Club

Club

šŸ‘ A club that dates back to 1827. If you remove the people from here, it is very classy and very English. The food is amazing here. If you are a non-vegetarian, try my favourite Prawn with Butter Garlic. I am sure you will love it. People often mention club, members, Kolkata, Club, great, Bengal, rooms, room, good, city,

This is an old and very reputed club of Calcutta. And pretty exclusive too! Most of the well known public figures of the seventies and eighties are members here and on the big days you will bump on to a celebrity or two. The property is well maintained. They have taken care to protect the old world look and feel of the club. They are conservative and expect you to be smartly dressed. One can't saunter in, in chappals etc Allegedly this was the place where "Dogs and Indians were not allowed" pre-independence. The food preparation is outstanding and the service is great. They are concerned with the guests satisfaction and they go the extra mile to make you happy. Visited as a guest so can't really comment on the prices. But can guess that this is not a cheap place. The facilities available here are great and this is the complete club.

This is the oldest club of the city, and yet so well-maintained. It has such an old world charm to it and has been taken utmost care of. The elevators are the wooden manual ones that operate at great efficiency. Lodging rooms are available for members and their guests, and even banquet booking is exclusively open for members or via their members. The banquet displays depictions of the port and paintings of great men who steered the history of the city and of Bengal at large.

What a well maintained place. I have been invited for a dinner and the moment I entered the club, I was impressed by the maintenance of the heritage. The ambiance was superlative but the moment they started serving the food my entire experience turned in to a nightmare. We ordered a lot but they serve like itā€™s 1820s, I must have spent 4 hours at this place and even 4 food dishes didnā€™t come by, it was huge amount of money got wasted. I suggest just visit the place and be satisfied with ambiance, donā€™t even think of having food here.

The Bengal Club or the Calcutta United Services Club as it was originally known was first discussed on Nov 29th 1826 in an informal meeting at the Calcutta Town Hall under the leadership of Lt.Col the Hon Finch CB who became the clubā€™s first President. He was the Military Secretary to Lord Combermere, Commander-in-Chief of the East India Companyā€™s army and also the first Patron of the Club. Lt. Col the Hon Finch CB was the son of the fourth Earl of Aylesford and his regiment was the Blues. After his service in India he was promoted to the rank of Major General and he died in 1861. The first club house premises came up in a building in Esplanade West which had been erected in 1813, a large part of the funds having been raised by the then popular method of lottery. The Oriental Club of London founded in 1824, merits special mention since its constitution served in some degree as a model for our Bengal Club. During those days membership was largely confined to senior military personnel and senior administrators along with a few medical professionals. Only six merchants and heads or directors of banks find mention in the first roster with 141 names.

This gracious club on Little Russell St just off Park St offers great accommodation as well as being superbly located. A heritage building with a gracious timeless ambiance. To stay here you need to be a member or a Members guest .. we were booked in by a member. We stayed in the Deluxe Rooms, there are Super Deluxe (larger) and Suites. The deluxe room is huge and has a huge double bed, TV, AC, lots of good lighting a seating area for 4 people, desk , cupboard and dressing table. It has a spacious bathroom with shower, an anti room with fridge, electric kettle and lots of glasses. And a lovely spacious balcony. The room has a bearer and you have to only press a button to summon him. He organised umpteen fresh line sodas and Kusum rolls. Breakfast is included in the room charges and is quite extensive. You order off a menu and it is served to you in the dining room! From porridge /cornflakes, eggs, bacon or sausage or ham, bread, luchi torkari /paratha and fruit to tea or coffee. There is a Chinese Restaurant, coastal Restaurant and a main dining room .. we didnā€™t try out any. Also a well appointed and popular bar with live music in the evenings. And a bakery The mobile network is decent indoors. Check in and check out was smooth. Thereā€™s a strict dress code .. no open footwear, no jeans, etc .. explained on check in. It is good value for money. Recommended Not sure about wheelchair accessibility

The Bengal Club is a prestigious and historic institution that has played a significant role in the social and cultural fabric of the city for over a century. Established in 1827, it has served as a meeting place for intellectuals, professionals, and distinguished personalities from various fields. The club's elegant colonial architecture and lush green surroundings provide a serene and exclusive environment for its members. With its rich heritage, the Bengal Club continues to foster a sense of camaraderie, offering a range of facilities and activities to its members, making it a cherished institution in the heart of Kolkata.

A faded jewel of the crown physically, well staffed and convenient. We came in the low season, so we had the run of the place, rooms are spacious and reasonably well-appointed, with broad terraces. I would certainly return, but would seek a more modern facility for special trips.

We stayed here on our trip to Kolkata. You have to be a member of the club or a member of any of its affiliate clubs. The rooms are very spacious and well maintained . The staff and service is excellent . There are two restaurants and a bakery within the club premises which are very good . The club is located smack in the middle of park Street . There is a dress code to visit some of the restaurants located inside the club. A general rule of thumb is to not wear slippers , jeans or tshirts.

The Bengal Club is the oldest club of the city. Despite it's old age it is a very well-maintained place. It has an old world British charm to it. The old age wooden and manual elevators operate efficiently. Lodging rooms are available for members and their guests. Banquet bookings for different occasions can be done by members. Outsiders can also book it through the members. The banquet displays paintings of the famous personalities who steered the history of Kolkata as well as Bengal. The club caters it's own food which is of great quality.

A wonderful stay in a beautiful city. Whilst not the most modern of accom the feel of old world was more than comfortable enough. Food options were fantastic, location is prime and the service was highly attentive . Rooms could do with a mild update but the charm of the place is in its heritage. Cannot recommend highly enough

The Bengal Club, established in 1827, has been at the heart of Calcuttaā€™s social and business circles for almost 200 years. Legendary Anglo-Indian and Indian menu including classics like Orange SoufflĆ©, Biryani and a brilliant cocktail menu to enjoy upstairs. If you have the chance to dine here do not miss out.

My first visit to the club to attend a wedding reception. I deeply enjoyed the lavish and authentic Bengali spread and the lovely deserts ...too good. 100 % marks.

Colonial British awra still permeates amidst the walls of this prestigious club in the first capital city of the British Raj. One is taken back in time walking down the aisles and under the high ceilings of this palatial building. They are still maintaining one of those old lifts of the yesteryear. The old paintings on the walls and the traditional furniture layouts will take you back to the pages of your history books. The food is awesome. Although the Indian cuisine is equally exquisite, the taste of the Mughlai dishes and especially the authentic Continental preparations seem actually to be coming out of the kitchens of the the pre-independence period.

Ambiance, reception, rooms are good quality. I went there to meet one guest there, who offers me tea...which quality means taste was not at all commensurate with the status and expectation. They need to look into.

This place is only for members and their guests. Beautiful place, exclusive ambience and really aristocratic gentry. The food is by far the best in town and very, very special. The staff are nice and well behaved. One of the best places in Kolkata for a genuine good atmosphere.
