I followed the rules of the museum and I did not take pictures while I was inside, but you know what, I want YOU to experience the mummies, come visit them. The museum cost is less then 50 pesos and it can be seen with in 30 minutes. They are beautiful to look at or scary to look at, it all depends on how you view them. I wish there was description of the mummies but you get nothing. There is a second museum but.. it's not worth it, it's supposed to scare you or show you methods of hurting people but there was not enough to pay for the extra. I would recommend you walking here, it's a good exercise and you get to see a better view of the city and where the locals live. People say to take an Uber because it looks rough, but that was not my experience. I talk and ask questions to some of the locals and they were all friendly and helpful. I guess it all depends on how you view people. Also, there is a guitar shop where you can. See The Famous guitar from Coco. The movie was took place around the city and the cousin of the guy who makes the guitar lives there. He is a great person to talk to and you can see the other guitars that he is making.

Less than $5 for entry. Plan on spending 30 minutes to view the entire museum. The Mummies of Guanajuato are a number of naturally mummified bodies interred during a cholera outbreak in Guanajuato in 1833. The human bodies appear to have been disinterred between 1870 and 1958. During that time, a local tax was in place requiring a fee to be paid for "perpetual" burial. Some bodies for which the tax was not paid were disinterred, and some—apparently those in the best condition—were stored in a nearby building. The climate of Guanajuato provides an environment which can lead to a type of natural mummification, although scientific studies later revealed that some bodies had been at least partially embalmed. While a bit creepy, I enjoyed learning about the history of the mummy collection (100+) and the history of the area.

The museum does not encourage the level of respect these human bodies deserve. The parents of little children should encourage them to behave appropriately. These are not haloween dolls. The coffin at the end of the exhibit for taking fun pictures with the Instagram hashtag should be removed. Otherwise, it is a once in a life experience that brings you closer to the true nature of human existence.

Exploitative. While the mummies are kept in a climate controlled environment, their preservation is suspect. These PEOPLE are being displayed as curiosities, propped upright with limbs sometimes reattached with tape (incorrectly) to be viewed. If an individual or family could not pay for burial services for the years required (a tax in place until 1958), remains were exhumed and if naturally mummified by the conditions, were added to the collection for display. Which means that there are potentially people alive today, whose relative is on display at this museum. Do not buy the full package for $120 pesos. It includes an additional room that is meant to be ‘scary.’ Here, bones are scattered and displayed as though the individual has been tortured, a so-called vampire has a stake through the heart, and a full skeleton is on display. A note for the museum, because I hope you see this. That skeleton is completely wrong. You have a cervical vertebrae in the lumbar region, the entire pelvis (the inominates and the sacrum) are upside down, one femur is upside down and they have been incorrectly sided, you have metatarsals as phalanges, and ulna and radius in place of a tibia and fibula and a fibula up with the humerus. It would take no time to fix this - and images of how to properly lay out a skeleton can be easily googled. This was a person. Have some respect.

I understand this is a very important attraction for the state of Guanajuato, but I can’t help to be disgusted by it. This is not a museum; there is no preservation, research, or education happening here. This is simply a freak show for people to take a few pictures to put on the social media for shock value. Ask yourself, “If this was my mom or grandmother, would I want her body to be seen by thousands of disrespectful people everyday taking pictures of her naked, preserved body?” If there was any sort of educational value from this, such as having exhibits about this very unique mummification process or relating to other mummies worldwide it would be a very different feeling. Maybe an effort to find the relatives of these people on display? Again, I know this is one of the states biggest moneymakers and I still encourage people to come and see how they feel about it themselves.

It's a very sad history and feels very heavy inside. Small space with no ventilation, so when there are a lot of people inside, it feels suffocating.

  • 3/5 Laurie P. 1 month ago on Google • 203 reviews New
It's ok. Small (which is fine). I'm sure it was only a few cents more to go to the second museum, but it was underwhelming. Instead of letting the bones and mummies stand on their own, they added a bunch of Halloween type stuff. Silly. I would have enjoyed it more had there been more stories or even just more descriptions of the years they were buried and exhumed. The cemetery behind is large and worth seeing if you haven't spent much time in Mexican cemeteries. Chaotic and interesting.

I was there on Tuesday morningng and there wasn't any line. As for the mummies, I don't know what to think of it. Most of the mummies aren't very old and were dug out only a couple of years after their death to make room for the new cadavers because there was no one (or wasn't able) to pay to keep the bodies in the graves.

Super intense creepy yet oddly compelling. The dear little mummy babies are so moving & sad yet it's impossible not to feel fascinated. A fantastic museum.

(Translated by Google) MUSEUM OF THE MUMMIES OF GUANAJUATO, to come and live this experience is really terrifying for those of us who are sensitive to talking about death, they are naturally mummified bodies, which have been discovered after the exhumation in tombs of the Santa Paula Cemetery, Guanajuato, Currently being one of the major tourist attractions in the Mexican state of Guanajuato, the mummies are exhibited in the Museum of the Mummies of Guanajuato. At present there are more than a hundred mummies that are part of the museum's inventory, in the year 1865 when the first mummified body was exhumed from the Pantheon of Santa Paula, it is a very strong feeling to live this experience, see the stories of each one of these and the faces of Terror in them fill you with questions what is there after death, or where are we going 🙈 (Original) MUSEO DE LAS MOMIAS DE GUANAJUATO, venir a vivir esta experiencia, realmente es aterradora para quienes somos sensibles a hablar de la muerte, son cuerpos momificados naturalmente, las cuales han sido descubiertas después de la exhumación en tumbas del Cementerio de Santa Paula, Guanajuato, Siendo actualmente una de las mayores atracciones turísticas de ese estado mexicano de Guanajuato , las momias son exhibidas en el Museo de las Momias de Guanajuato. It's a good place to understand a lot of things about humans. But I think that if you have claustrophobia please don't visit this place. Lol. It's a place to visit once a lifetime.

It's a must-see when visiting Guanajuato, it gives an insight into the town's history, how bodies are naturally mummified due to the soil and weather conditions in the area, plus other factors. My only complain is with the people visiting, many kids and families go there thinking it's a spooky ride or haunted mansion, which it is not, so if you visit with kids please have some respect and let the tour guide speak instead of interrupting every time, these are real bodies, your level of respect sould be equal to when visiting a cemetery.

A must-visit museum in Guanajuato. The set up is a little weird but the exhibit is very interesting and specially amazing if you're into archeology of mummies. Each mummy has a short story and explanation as well. The price to go in is very low and you're allowed to take photos with no flash in order not to damage the mummies. A small detail though, since this is one of the biggest attractions downtown make sure that you get here early during the day, as the line to get in can be pretty long and slow.

If your in Guanajuato, don't miss going here. This museum has so much to take in with all the mummies and the history of the museum. It was really, really cool to see. O would definitely go back.

Interesting exhibit of mummies that naturally formed from the chemistry of the cementery. Some of the mummies have informational placards which provide more information. Don't recommend the extra 18 peso crypt portion. It is gimmicky with holograms and what appear to be fake legends.

The mummies are cool but without a guided tour you really don't know their personal history, how they were formed, and why certain mummies look different. The only signs they have are the first name of the mummy and a date (like museum artwork "oil on canvas, 1974"). They also charge you extra to take pictures.

Great experience to see the history of the mummies of Guanajuato..its not too big of a place but great place for a piece of history of Guanajuato...forgot how much was the entrance but its really cheap...maybe $3-4 ..as soon as you get there you will get bombarded from locals selling u some souvenirs..there just trying to make a living...just tell them you'll get something after you exit and they will leave you alone...however I do recommend to buy from them instead of the little shops because you will get a deal..I gave the man like 50 pesos which is like $2.50 in American dollars but I got like 4 very nice souvenirs..very nice well made souvenirs..the same souvenirs in the US would of cost like $25-30 dollars .. and if u want to go all out.. with $5 dollars or 100 pesos you will have souvenirs for days and you'll make their day... lastly I will highly recommend to get a tour or a guide.. save yourself a headache

Interesting museum, definitely a must do. I wish there was more information in English. Fairly small museum so it does not take long. Nice walk to get there from the center. Visited in a Sunday and it wasn't too busy.

An intensely grotesque must see experience. It's not for the feint of heart. The smallest mummy in the world, a 6 month old fetus, lies inside. I would say maybe 30-50 mummies are inside. They are well preserved with hair, skin, and nails intact. Don't miss it

It's a definite 5* if you're here during Day of the Dead, and visit the cemetery above, as well. Along with the mummies are fascinating photos of GTO past. A few of the displays have signage in English, but most are Spanish only. Tour groups with guides are numerous, but they space everyone out so you're not on top of each other. Signs all over town mark the way- 'Momias', and it's an easy walk through town. Buses also go nearby. Say momias, and they'll know what you mean. Parking is available, but not too numerous. Earlier is better than later.

Really nicely put exhibitions. The wait can be long so we visit just before closing. They offered a guide for a tip. That now I think is encouraged if you would want to know about every mummies. I would say that almost the majority of them have some brief description. Once inside it could be around 20 to 30 minutes. Remember to ask for the photo permit at the window since it's at an additional cost.

It's pretty incredible how a museum can tell the story of individuals, especially individuals whom have long since passed yet because of a perfect set of conditions their bodies are preserved so as to be included with that story. There are some exhibits here that some people might not be prepared for so go with that understanding. I won't dare spoil it by telling you here.

I really don't understand how this is a popular tourist attraction. At just over $90 pesos it really feels overpriced. It feels like you are seeing the same 3 mummies over and over again with little information or context. I was bored after 2 minutes and finished after 10 minutes. Don't waste your time and money unless you really really are interested. Also don't expect anything but shrivelled up bodies. There is no embalming or interesting coffins.

Is ok if you like this kind of thing. If you go know that they charge for everything. Ticket to get in, tickets to take pictures, etc. Also you need to go in twice. Once to take pictures and again to follow the group and hear the stories. The tour guy goes so fast that you really don't have a chance to do both.

Ugly lights inside and gross. Not because the mums, the place by itself feels like a public bathroom and the ticket were expensive. And you're not allowed to take photos unless you pay an extra supposedly but nobody cares about it inside so if you paid before getting in, you just wasted your money. 🙃

I went back to visit this place after 30 years. I always like to see the mummy's and the stories behind the events. I recommend this place. It's better than Egypt. The whole city is amazing and lots of culture and all the tunnels and hills are breath taking scenery.

Very cool place! Learn so much about the history of Mexico. While tours are not available in English, the Spanish tour guide was very detailed and would be happy to answer any questions. The guide was free in Spanish. Cool place and really gets you thinking of the history the city has.

I have visited the Museum of the Mummies of Guanajuato many times and have always had a great experience. The museum is home to a collection of naturally mummified bodies that were discovered after being exhumed from graves in the Santa Paula Cemetery in Guanajuato, Mexico. The mummies are one of the biggest tourist attractions in the state and are displayed in the museum for visitors to see. Every time I visit the museum, I am amazed by the history and preservation of the mummies. The museum has over a hundred mummies in its inventory, each with its own unique story. The origin of the mummies dates back to 1865 when the first mummified body was exhumed from the Santa Paula Cemetery. This body belonged to the French doctor Dr. Remigio Leroy. From then until 1958, more mummified bodies were discovered due to the special conditions of the subsoil of the place, combined with the presence of nitrates and alum. I have taken many friends from all over the world to visit the Museum of the Mummies of Guanajuato and they have all been fascinated by the collection. The museum is located on the esplanade of the Santa Paula cemetery and its origin dates back to the discovery of the first mummies in 1865. In its early days, the discovered mummies were stored in the catacombs of the cemetery, which could be visited accompanied by the gravedigger. If you are interested in visiting the Museum of the Mummies of Guanajuato, you can check their hours, prices, and routes to get to the museum on their official website. Don’t miss this interesting collection!

I tried going to the museum but once I arrived at the parking lot, I saw hundreds of people liked up to get in and line was not moving at all. May be it was right after the Christmas that everyone was having a holiday, but I decided not to stand in the line this time. It is better to come when not many is likely to come. Avoid long holidays!

Getting here is a bit difficult. Streets are steep and narrow. There was a group of people who stopped my car to park in a dirt parking lot before reaching the museum (not museum staff just randoms trying to make a buck), dont stop and keep going. The museum offers free parking on asphalt. The museum itself is in good shape and priced accessibly and counts with 6 viewing rooms. You have the option of visiting a torture exhibition as well.

This museum was open as of our visit on 08/25. Very unique museum filled with many mummified bodies. Do a quick bit of research before you go. My girlfriend loved this museum, but it is not for the faint of heart. Also, not in the best area of Guanajuato City, so take an Uber. General Admission was $33 Mexican Pesos per person. There was another part of the museum we did not explore.

(Translated by Google) Much seller outside, a little more history is missing. It was the one I liked the least but it's worth it (Original) Mucho vendedor afuera, falta un poco mas de historia. Fue el que menos me gusto pero vale la pena

(Translated by Google) It is a good place, I just don't think it is necessary to have a guide inside the museum, there should also be a single cost to enter all the rooms, since they are divided at the end of the tour (Original) Es un bien lugar, solo que no creo necesario tener un guía dentro del museo, también debe haber un solo costo para entrar a todas las salas, ya que están divididas al final del recorrido

It was a great experience to see the mummies in person as pictures don't reflect the sensations you feel as you examine each one.

This place has evolved to a modern atmosphere. So clean, people keeping their distance but it is a long wait to get in.

As soon as we got in there was a tour guide free of charge, they only work for tips. Well explained, took around 25mins to walk through the museum with the guide. Museum is not expensive and they are following health safety guidelines. Mummies are well kept and they are easy to observe.

Very intense experience, lots of mummies. free guided tour explaining the whole thing very well and with dignity. There are quiet disturbing mummies there aswell, not for the light hearted. Price around 100mxn seems fair. Stayed for 30-40 mins.

Interesting museum, quite small. Visited in 30 min max.

Nice experience to witness. Would have been nice to have a background story of each body in display but there wasn't any. We were not asked/forced to wear masks so that was a plus.

A different kind of experience, it not only shows the mummies, but it gives a background on why they were preserved and it gives also the history behind some of them A must if you travel to Guanajuato.

The place is a bit small but it has enough mummies to see. We followed and listened to a guide that works on tips at the museum. The museum guide was very informative and made a better experience of our visit.

Easy to visit. Just catch a local bus 8mxn fee, a small walk to the museum. I waited in line to buy a ticket less than 5 mins. Nice place to know another story of this city!

We found this to be confronting but also a very meaningful experience especially as we visited during Day Of The Dead. Not for the faint hearted and we deleted any photos we took as respect. Well worth the long trek uphill from Centro if you feel like a walk. Best to get there early as the queue can get quite long.

I paid extra for taking photos, but no one checked.. everybody was taking photos and videos without paying any extra money. I spent inside 30 minutes maximum and that because it was crowded. It's a small museum.

First of all the parking is awful, they let you get in and they don't have availability you need to park your car in second line until someone decides to leave the museum. There is a place that is called the death salon and they have a mommy there that doesn't have the enough requirements about the preservation and it smells bad, don't pay 15 pesos more for that area it doesn't worth it.

It's a good experience. Stuff you should know about humanity and death, they explain very well. You can take pictures. It's not expensive and overall a good trip. The vendors outside the museum are nice but are a little too pushy

I would have never thought to leave a negative review. Maybe, I have expected too much. Once you see the first mummy, you know how all the others will be. Very repetitive. At the museum they sell for extra price, the visit at the second room with, according to them, should show lights, holograms and effects. Nothing at all, a few quids thrown away. But the standard entry only, if you have too.

The cashier gave us incorrect change and insisting that it was correct. We lost $300 pesos to her and my Spanish wasn’t strong enough to dispute it. Once walking through, there was little that eased you into it. Once passing through the door you are suddenly faced with dead bodies. We found it gross and vulgar. Beware of the pregnant and baby mummies.

To preface, I'm not a big museum guy. But this is absolutely worth the hour of your time that it will take to see the whole museum. The mummies are incredibly well-preserved, and the lighting does well to add to the creepy ambience. Most of the exhibits can be read in both Spanish and English which is appreciated. Note: you have to pay a bit extra to take photos or videos with your phone, be aware of this.

What an experience! The four of us enjoyed the mummy museum and found it very interesting. A few "Wow" factors! One thing is the map search from our hotel said "fairly flat" walk. Not quite accurate. Pretty steep incline to walk. We did it, but not without quite a few steps for a few of our asthmatics. Cab it or bus it? The museum is a must see. At least once.

Its small museum.... our guide was 5 min telling the story the girl at the door said just go in with your guide I was first I didn't seen anyone guiding so I jump in this big crowd as for national Mexican prices are too high 101 pesos which for USD IS LIKE 5 to 7 dollars and for video 35 pesos which I don't know why pay if everyone is taking pictures and video what of waste of money there is no Ticketmaster on this 😀 have to buy in door which they do accept credit/debit... if you have credit use that its the smarts way if cash
