Great history surrounding this building. If you happen to be visiting Guanajuato you have to ensure this museum is on your visit list. Plaza on west side of building often has events.

Wow, this museum took me 3 hours to fully experience. Yes, I had to read slowly and translate the Spanish into English pero, there is just a lot to see if you really want to take your time to explore. The building is huge, historic and beautiful in some aspects despite the bloodshed and misery that has occurred here in the past. A must see when in Guanajuato City. If you have the time you have to experience this museum.

Not enough lines to describe what this place represents in Mexican history. Closed on Mondays. On a Tuesday, ask for the guided explanation from the only certified historian. A tip: he will ask what is the meaning of the word "Mexico" in nahuatl. Enjoy!

Your experience here will really depend on your interest in Mexican history. This is, after all, the site of the first battle and the first victory in the war for Mexican independence. Surprisingly not the whole museum is dedicated to the battle, or even to Mexican independence war. Half of the building is dedicated to local archeological finds and pre-Hispanic cultures that inhabited the area. the downstairs portion is more or less about the war for independence and Mexican history thereafter. A few interesting frescoes adorn the entrance halls, the artifacts are mostly small and will not knock your socks off, everything is in Spanish.

Beautiful museum covering the entire Mexican revolution, pre-spanish history, and contemporary exhibits. There are guides available, but we opted to go solo. Entrance is on the Positos road side. Use of cell phones to take pictures is free.

Very detailed account of México's colorful history. The museum is 2 floors with a courtyard in the middle. The history portion begins at the top and goes by different periods in different rooms until you reach modern times. The museum is well lit, with wonderful information and helpful guides. Really a treat to visit. Highly recommended.

Built between 1798 and 1808 as a grain storage, the Alhondiga became a fortress in 1810 when 300 Spanish troops and loyalist leaders barricaded themselves inside after rebels led by Miguel Hidalgo attempted to take Guanajuato. On September 28, 1810, a young miner nicknamed El Pipila tied a stone slab to his back and protected from Spanish bullets, set the entrance ablaze. The rebels moved in and killed everyone inside. An important place in the History of Mexican Independence.

If you like history and colonial architecture this is the place to visit ( Guanajuato , Mexico ) is a fantastic place to visit with buildings from days gone by , originally settled by Spanish conquistadors in the 1500's , winding cobble stone streets and ally ways , beautiful zocalos surrounded by restaurants and lots of shops with local goods ( its a feast for the senses ), take a a city tour to the mummy museum, walking tour and listen to the local stories ( great ) , visit the "callejon del beso" with that special someone , finally the food always a treat and great tasting .... be sure to take a light jacket and very comfortable shoes 😊

The place itself is very important to Mexican history. BUT I feel like the museum itself didn't showcase the importance of this building. Instead they have pictures of wealthy Mexicans and residents of Guanajuato, which I didn't find interesting. Some parts were relevant. I would say don't worry about going in if you don't have time.

While in the mountain city of Guanajuato, MX, I attended two events during the Cervantino Festival at this location. The events were spectacular and the venue was very nice. The events were actually held outside the building but the location was great.

Super nice and clean with bathrooms. There was a presentation with a great story teller and actor, it was perfect for kids and adults. Great murals, beautiful arquitecture and it's a very important place for Mexican Independence. It also has a great collection of ancient pottery, seals, paintings, photos, history timeliness, etc, etc, etc. It's a must see museum!

Great historic building with several salons representing different areas in local history. From pre-Hispanic civilizations, including artifacts and cultural differences through the colonial period, mining history, independence movement and continues on to the present. I am a low intermediate Spanish speaker so the information panels served as great educational devices for improving my Spanish. Some really cool murals inside as well.

Nice walk to museum. No English translations on any exhibit or tour. Kids enjoying lessons. After gray GDL it is nice to see pink and green stone. Wonderful murals but why does one scene have men in KKK hoods?

Nice place to know about history of Guanajuato, a lot of prehispánica pieces here, some about Mexican Independence War, an many other things about Guanajuato. They have suddenly English tours, but also they have some cards in every room in English and some other lenguages. You will spend here 1 to 2 hours.

If you care at all about the history of Mexico and it's story of independence, then you must go here. I cannot tell you how large a contribution this small piece of history makes for the story of a beautiful state in Mexico. There is so much to take in, but it's best with the tour guide.
