Old Kingdom is a casual Chinese restaurant that has been serving the Surrey Hills community for over 20 years. The restaurant is known for its signature Peking duck, which is made with a special blend of spices and roasted to perfection. Other popular dishes include the stir-fried noodles, the dumplings, and the crispy pork belly. The interior of the restaurant is simple and stylish, with white walls and wooden furniture. The service is friendly and attentive, and the prices are reasonable. Overall, Old Kingdom is a great option for a casual Chinese meal in Surrey Hills. Overall, Old Kingdom is a good option for a casual Chinese meal in Surrey Hills. The food is delicious, the service is friendly, and the prices are reasonable. However, if you are looking for a quick and easy meal, Old Kingdom may not be the best choice, as the service can be slow and the restaurant can get crowded. Here are some tips for getting the most out of your meal at Old Kingdom: Make a reservation, especially if you are dining on a weekend. Order the Peking duck, as it is the restaurant's signature dish. Try other dishes, such as the stir-fried noodles, the dumplings, and the crispy pork belly. Be patient with the service, as it can be slow. Enjoy your meal in the simple and stylish interior of the restaurant. The star of the show was the Peking Duck. Got to be one of the best in Melbourne. Really good. Service was OK. It was not very responsive but passable. Overall the food wins out. Recommended.

During my recent visit to Old Kingdom in Surrey Hills Melbourne, I had a mixed experience. The restaurant boasts a convenient location and an inviting atmosphere, with warm lighting and tasteful decor. However, while the service was friendly and prompt, the food didn't quite hit the mark for me. Undoubtedly, the highlight of the meal was the Peking Duck Pancakes. These arrived freshly prepared, with crispy and flavourful duck skin alongside thin, delicate pancakes. The contrast of textures was delightful, and the self-serve approach allowed us to customize our portions and toppings. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the Peking Duck Noodles. These were rather disappointing, with soggy noodles and a lackluster flavour that failed to impress. Similarly, the Salted Vegetable and Duck Soup was too salty for our tastes, leaving us with a lingering aftertaste that detracted from the overall experience. While the service was commendable and the ambiance was pleasant, the prices were quite steep. In fact, the cost of the meal was $70 per duck, which is relatively high given the mixed experience. All things considered, I would give Old Kingdom a 3/5 rating. While the Peking Duck Pancakes were certainly a highlight, the Peking Duck Noodles and Salted Vegetable and Duck Soup left something to be desired. While Old Kingdom may be a viable option for Chinese cuisine in the area, there are likely better options available.

We had a table for 10 including 3 kids under 10. Warning: you have to pre-order the Peking ducks (1 duck per 2 adults) and you need to bring cash - no credit cards. Also, it was hard to book. That's why I knocked a star off for service. However, the meal was great, the duck excellent (though the quantity of greens was not generous) and Ivan, our waiter, was fantastic. He also made special efforts to make sure of gluten-free options where possible. Thank you. Everyone had a great time.

ORDERED: 3 course Meal: Crispy Peking Duck ($70 per duck) 🦆  1. Whole duck served with homemade pancakes, cucumber and spring onion, special homemade sauce 🍝  2. Stir fry beanshoots with shredded duck meat (add on crispy noodle/ramen for +$8 per serve) 🥣  3. Salted Vegetable and Duck Soup REVIEW: Peking duck at Old Kingdom has the CRISPIEST skin I've ever had. It's insane. It's literally a crispiness that shatters in your mouth, but the duck is still moist. It's because they cook the skin and the meat separately! Apart from that, I couldn't care for anything else. The homemade pancakes were so thin that you could only wrap them 1 meat thick. 2 meats would stretch or poke through the paper-thin wrap, making it an unwieldy experience with sauce bubbling through the cracks. Cucumber and spring onion were a bit stingy, with limited portions. The ramen/crispy noodle add-on had no flavour. Slimy and wet, I was chewing on unseasoned noodles. The crispy noodles didn't have the 'wok hay' charcoal flavour, so it was mid. Duck soup was average. Definitely prefer Old Beijing's (CBD) 3 course duck better. Their Peking Duck skin isn't as crispy, but they do me good on all the other dimensions. Service is self-serve at Old Kingdom. They're efficient at clearing, but not the water top up. Luckily, there's an abundance of water carafes at the front. In recycled alcohol bottles. You can also pre-order the duck, which really speeds up the dining experience.

Absolutely lovely and delicious Peking duck. Personally, this is one of the best around Melbourne. The price of food is fairly reasonable and most importantly customer service is good here. The boys and girls that work here are very polite and helpful. It's definitely worth a try if you haven't already done so.

Instagram: markandelly_eats This friend of mine claimed @oldkingdompekingduck does the BEST Peking Duck in town. And he was NOT wrong! We Ordered: - Peking Duck 🦆 (duh!) - Crispy Noodles with Beanshoots and Shredded Duck Meat - Tofu with Veggies - Fried Duck The absolute highlight was obviously the Pecking Duck. It was delicious and the skin was golden and crispy. It came out with their homemade pancakes, and special sauce with cucumber and spring onions. Each wrap was just golden. Perfect texture, flavourful, and juicy - just melts in your mouth. Not to mention, the crispy noodles! I am a noodles guy myself and I just couldn't resist those noodles with beanshoots & sauce mixed together. I thoroughly recommend this joint for excellent Peking Duck experience!

Only came to this one was the Richmond restaurant was closed when we wanted to attend. Unsure if they are the same franchise as the service was definitely lacking here. Our waiter didn’t speak to us at all and just kept nodding as we listed menu items then laughed and walked away. When he approached other tables, he was laughing and had a notepad and pen. Not too sure what the angle was here? Serving and prices seem a little higher as well. Duck was dry on one plate and juicy on the other. Not sure if we will be returning to this particular restaurant…

Peking duck was phenomenal. Fried rice is extremely bland, need sauce. Meat dishes were too saucy, and probably better with steamed rice. Overall, a good experience. I would come back here for the Peking duck dishes for sure.

Dependable local Peking Duck. Consistently good. --- Above was written 6 years ago. We have been back many, many times so I thought I would write a more detailed review. Duck 4/5: This duck is fried and not roasted, so it lacks the smoky flavour that you get from some other places. They used to slice the duck by the table, but these days they do it in the kitchen. They also used to take more care with the plating. Still, it is very good and reasonably priced. Duck soup 4/5: the soup is made with diced tofu and pickled mustard greens. It is peppery, slightly sour, and rich with the flavour of duck bones. It tastes amazing. What lets it down is the lack of refinement - too many floaty gristle bits. The chef should skim the soup more, or better still - strain it. Shredded duck with beansprouts and crispy noodles 4/5: the noodles used to be really crispy but lately they haven't been frying the noodles enough. Still a tasty dish. What elevates it to 5 stars (despite the 4 star food) is the reasonable price, the convenience, and the speed at which food is delivered even though they are always busy.

Delicious Peking duck!! The closest I’ve found to the duck in Beijing in Melbourne! Love how you can also get the duck with noodles - both options are delicious, and a duck broth as well! We were so full from the duck we didn’t order too many sides, but the sweet and sour fish we got was delicious!! Follow hangryhelena on Instagram for more food content 🥰
